Blog Tour: Fighting Redemption by Kate McCarthy

We are VERY excited to be part of the Blog Tour for Fighting Redemption by Kate McCarthy.  This is one of Tami's favourite books for the year.  It is an incredibly powerful read and we would encourage you to go and grab a copy - you won't be disappointed!

Title: Fighting RedemptionAuthor: Kate McCarthyGenre: Contemporary RomanceRelease Date: December 2, 2013

Ryan Kendall is broken. He understands pain. He knows the hand of violence and the ache of loss. He knows what it means to fail those who need you. Being broken doesn’t stop him wanting the one thing he can’t have; Finlay Tanner. Her smile is sweet and her future bright. She’s the girl he grew up with, the girl he loves, the girl he protects from the world, and from himself.

At nineteen, Ryan leaves to join the Australian Army. After years of training he becomes an elite SAS soldier and deploys to the Afghanistan war. His patrol undertakes the most dangerous missions a soldier can face. But no matter how far he runs, or how hard he fights, his need for Finlay won’t let go.

Returning home after six years, one look is all it takes to know he can’t live without her. But sometimes love isn’t enough to heal what hurts. Sometimes people like him can’t be fixed, and sometimes people like Finlay deserve more than what’s left.

This is a story about war and the cost of sacrifice. Where bonds are formed, and friendships found. Where those who are strong, fall hard. Where love is let go, heartache is born, and heroes are made. Where one man learns that the hardest fight of all, is the fight to save himself.

Later that morning after their workout and shower, Jake fell asleep on the couch. Feeling at a loss with nothing but time on his hands, Ryan wandered down the hall towards Fin’s room. She was sitting at a little study nook in the corner, laptop open with one foot resting on her chair. She was wearing a tank top and a little pair of shorts. Leaning up against the doorframe, he couldn’t tear his eyes away from those long, delectable legs.

As though sensing his presence, she turned in her chair. He forced his eyes upwards, catching a sexy flush fill her cheeks at his blatant perusal.

“Morning, Ryan.” She took off her black framed reading glasses and tossed them on the desk.

“Morning, Fin,” he replied.

Against his better judgment, Ryan pushed away from the door and walked farther into the room. Fin hadn’t changed at all and neither had his desire for her. His heart kicked over when she met his eyes. He knew everything he was feeling right now was written all over him, but he couldn’t seem to shut it off.

Her eyelids fluttered closed and she whispered, “Why now?”

Ryan took a deep breath. “I don’t know,” he replied honestly.

He shouldn’t still be feeling this way after so many years. Why was he doing this to her, and to himself? It was better for everyone if he stayed away like he was supposed to.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come. I’ll go stay at the barracks.” He turned to leave.

“Ryan!” she called out. Scrambling out of the chair, she grabbed his arm as he was halfway out the door.

“Fin,” he warned, looking down at her hand pointedly.

She took a step closer and he breathed her in, her scent like jasmine on a hot summer’s day. He was surprised when he looked into her eyes and saw anger burning hotly in their depths.

“Six years, Ryan. Do you know how hurt I was, each day passing by and getting nothing—not even a note or an email? I didn’t just lose you. I lost my brother too. Both of you left me, and I was okay with that. I understood that this was what you needed to do, so I moved on. I built a life that doesn’t include you. That was what I had to do.” She paused and raised a shaky hand to cup his cheek. “I’d have given you my entire heart if you’d only asked, but it’s not yours now. It’s not yours.”

Ryan closed his eyes, agony for losing what was never his rose in his chest until he felt strangled by it. He placed his hand over hers, holding it there until she tugged it away.

“You’re right,” Fin told him. “You should stay on the barracks … but I don’t want you to. Damn you, Ryan,” she whispered fiercely. “I don’t want you to.”

Ryan used his bulk to crowd her against the wall until there was no room for her to move. Leaning one hand against the wall, he grabbed her hip with the other. Her breathing rose rapidly and he leaned in, ducking his head until their mouths hovered a mere breath apart.

“Why can’t I force myself to leave?” He rested his forehead against hers and closed his eyes. “I hurt too. For six years I fought every day not to think of you, and I lost, because every day you were all I could see. You were the best thing in my life—so sweet and innocent, and so goddamn tempting.” His hand strayed from her hip and slid down to grip her ass. He swallowed the groan. “I stayed away so you could move on.”

I’ve just finished reading Fighting Redemption and I feel like I’ve had my heart ripped out, sewn back in and then ripped out all over again.  It is an incredible roller coaster of emotion to read and so powerful in its story telling.  Congratulations Kate McCarthy - this was pure awesome.
Before I touch on the story I want to acknowledge all of the wonderful people that choose a life in the armed forces.  Reading Fighting Redemption I felt so incredibly proud and immensely grateful for the freedoms they ensure.  Fighting Redemption was an absolute celebration of those that serve to protect our country and I am so humbled by what they sacrifice.  Simply telling their story in such an accessible way and hopefully helping more people to understand exactly what they do give, makes Fighting Redemption worthy of five stars in my mind, let alone how wonderful the love story is that surrounds Ryan and Fin.
Ryan was a wonderful character.  So strong and purposeful.  Driven by his one ‘failure’ to protect others.  He deserved so much and yet felt that he deserved nothing.  His connection with Fin was so much a part of both of them that to deny it was like denying a part of himself and yet he fought and fought against his feelings because he didn’t believe he was enough for her.
“Don’t let anyone stop you from being who you need to be, okay?”
I loved Fin too.  Smart, quirky, clumsy and feisty enough to hold her own with the boys.  Her love for Ryan was something she didn’t fully understand and watching her battle him as much as herself dragged me through every emotion possible.  Sometimes I wanted to crack their heads together and tell them to sort their shit out, and yet that was exactly what they were doing, despite how painful it was to watch.  Even with the challenges they faced, one thing that always shone through was the depth and intensity of their love – the challenge was for them to find their way through their own personal mine fields.
The brotherly bond between Ryan and Jake, Fin’s brother was amazing and the strength of their commitment to serve their country simply radiated off the pages.  They both knew without doubt that they had each other’s backs.  Fin was left to wait for both of them to come home from their tours in Afghanistan and how on earth she survived those waits I will never know.
This story was one of the most heartbreaking, love filled stories I have read in a while.  As an Australian I felt connected to the people and places in way that made it all seem incredibly real.  I could relate the characters to people I know and the heartbreak and sadness I felt at times was overwhelming.  So much so that I had to put my kindle down, despite desperately wanting to know what was going to happen I needed the reprieve just in case it went really badly.
There is an amazing cast of characters in Fighting Redemption that will stay with me - Ryan, Fin, Jake, Kyle, Rachael - and even though there could be more story told, there doesn’t need to be.  Fighting Redemption is impeccably written.  Not only does it tell a beautiful love story, but it celebrates the many nameless/faceless soldiers that give us the freedoms that we take for granted on a daily basis.  At the end I sat there, with a quiet tear, so thankful for what I have and for the gentle reminder to make the most of every moment and treasure those dear to me.  The ending, along with the rest of the story, was perfect - thank you Kate McCarthy for this brilliant book.

The following is an excerpt of More With You…a New Adult romance by Kaylee Ryan releasing early 2014.

Unedited and subject to change prior to publication.
Aiden’s POV

Liam and Allison turn to head towards the house. I know that I should follow them, but damn it I’m holding her and I don’t want to let go. She stands still in my arms not trying to break our connection. My right arm is still draped across her waist holding her tight against my chest. I gently grip her left hip and turn her to face me. She’s staring straight at my chest, not meeting my eyes. I gently lift her chin with my index finger. Fuck she is so beautiful. What if something would have happened to her today? I can feel the anger trying to resurface. I take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Hailey is silently watching me now. I lean down and rest my forehead against hers and close my eyes. Both of my hands find her hips. I’m going to take every advantage to touch her that I can.

“I was worried about you, angel.” I tell her honestly. Well as honest as I can be.

“Aiden, we were fine. Those guys were just being friendly.”

“You don’t know them. Hell, they could have taken you both and did god only knows what to you.” I swallow back the emotion of just the thought of her being hurt.

“I’m not yours to worry about.” She whispers.

And there it is the knife that is twisting in my chest. She’s right, I know it and she knows it, but fuck if I like it.

I pull back and bring both of my hands to her cheeks. “Angel, I care about you. You may not be mine, but I will never let anything happen to you. Do you understand that?” I ask her. I really need her to know how special she is.

“One big brother is enough, Aiden. You don’t have to feel obligated to protect me.”

“Who said I wanted to be your big brother?” I ask trying to keep my voice calm. This is truly a daunting feat with all of the rage boiling inside me. She thinks I want to be her big brother? Fuck that!

“Don’t you? Why else would you go all alpha Aiden and try to keep me from them?” she asks me.

I watch her closely as she waits for my answer. This beautiful girl has no idea the war I have fought these past few months. She has no idea how she affects me, how much I want her. This is killing me. Wanting something this much, something that I can’t have. She licks her lips and now all I can think about is tasting her. I don’t even realize that I’m going to do it until our lips meet and I’m consumed with her sweetness. Lips of an angel, I tell you.

I move one hand behind her neck and the other is holding her cheek. I angle her head back and deepen the kiss. Hailey opens her mouth and I take full advantage to slide my tongue in and hers immediately duals with mine. She moans and my desire is fueled. I can’t get her close enough, can’t get enough period. Hailey slows the kiss and pulls her lips from mine. I tug her into a tight embrace.

“I need for you to always be safe. Not because I feel like your older brother, but because you are important to me. I couldn’t handle it if something happened to you.”

I feel her nod against my chest. “Let’s go, they’re going to wonder where we are.” I whisper in her ear.

She slowly pulls away from me. “Thank you, Aiden.” With that she turns and heads back to the beach house.

I stand there and watch my heart walk away from me. I place my hand over my heart and rub the ache that is throbbing in my chest. No girl will ever mean to me what Hailey MacCoy does.

Blog Tour: Out of Time by Jen McLaughlin

Out of Time by Jen McLaughlinDecember 2013

Desperate to keep him...

I've finally gotten everything I ever wanted: love, freedom, happiness, and, most importantly, Finn. Our love is everything I expected it to be and more. We've finally found each other, but the world seems determined to tear us apart. We thought my father was the only obstacle between us, but now it's the military. With Finn’s departure looming, we’re squeezing in every moment together before we run out of time.

Trying to make every moment count…

Being Carrie’s bodyguard was one thing. Being her boyfriend is another. Every day she’s mine is a day the sun shines in my life. Yet our time together is running out. Her father will never think a tattooed Marine will be good enough, so I’ll do whatever it takes to be worthy of her love. But the road will take me away from the girl who makes me feel alive--the girl I can't live without.

Time only gets us so far...

I tugged harder. “Hello? Earth to Finn.”

Finn finally looked down at me, his hot eyes searing into mine. He seemed to shake off whatever he’d been thinking. “Yeah. I’m here.”

“Good.” I smiled at him, my heart skipping a beat when he placed his hand on the small of my back. His hard chest pressed against mine, making me want to press closer and rub up against him like a stripper doing a lap dance. “You ready?”

“Hell yeah,” Finn said, leading me toward his bike. He glanced over his shoulder, his brow furrowed, and his eyes on where Cory probably still stood. “That took a lot more self-control than I thought I had, I’ll have you know.”

“Why?”

“I don’t like him.”

“I know, but he’s harmless enough.”

“Yeah.” Finn snorted. “As harmless as a sniper.”

I looked back at Cory. He wore a lavender shirt, was going to school to become a doctor, and had manicured nails. He turned and walked away, his stride slow and laid-back, just like he was. Call me crazy, but that didn’t exactly scream dangerous thug to me. “I just don’t see what you see.”

“It’s simple, really. He likes you. I don’t like him,’” Finn said, grabbing my helmet off the bike. “Need I say more?”

He stuck my helmet under the crook of his elbow and smoothed my hair from my face. With his hands on either side of my head, he leaned down and pressed his mouth to mine, stealing my breath away with a simple kiss. My stomach twisted in knots, and my heart thudded in my ears.

When he pulled back, he ran his thumb over my lower lip and gave me a small smile. The way my body reacted to the simple touch, he might as well have stripped naked in the street. His blue eyes skimmed over my body, making me tense with anticipation. “Were you a good girl today?”

“Of course I was,” I answered instantly. “When am I not?”

“If you got down on your knees with my cock in your mouth,” he said, his gaze fastened on my mouth. “You’d be pretty damned bad then.”

“Finn.”

My cheeks heated and so did other parts of my body. Namely, in between my legs. I’d be lucky if I made it home before jumping his bones. And man, I wanted to do what he described now that he’d put the image in my head.

I wanted to kneel at his feet and taste him with my tongue, sucking him in deeper and deeper until he came in my—

“Hello?” He waved his hand in front of my face, his lips curved into a smile. “Did I break you?”

I licked my lips and he watched me hungrily, his gaze flashing as he read my expression. “Nope, not broken. I want to go home and do exactly what you just said, so hurry the heck up, will you?”

Title: In the Middle of NowhereAuthor: Julie Ann KnudsenGenre: Contemporary YAPublication Date: April 2012Event organized by: Into the Night Reviews

A teenage girl. A broken heart. And a boy who tries to mend it.

Butterflies. Little, fluttering butterflies. That’s what fifteen-year-old Willow Flynn feels in the pit of her stomach every time the mysterious boy is near. But Willow has other things to contend with as she deals with the tragic loss of her father, as well as her emotionally preoccupied mother, while being uprooted to a new house, a new school, a new life, far away, on an island, in the middle of nowhere.

At the beginning of the school year, the sickly, but cute Michael sends Willow the first of many cryptic notes during homeroom. He stares at Willow and gives her the creeps. Michael never returns to school after that, but Willow ends up connecting with the poetic boy on-line where they strike up an unusual friendship.

As Willow attempts to fit in and find her niche in the ever-cliquey high school world, she is further confused by Michael who strives to win her over and mend her broken heart. But will he be able to, especially when his own existence remains so uncertain?

It was some time ago that I read In the Middle of Nowhere when I won a free copy of the book as part of an author interview and giveaway on Goodreads. It was really different to a lot of the books I've read and something about it has stayed with me. I was thrilled when Julie Ann and I started chatting about the prospect of a blog tour.
In the Middle of Nowhere tells the story of Willow who, along with her Mother and Brother James, moves to Pike’s Island, a small island in the Gulf of Maine’s Casco Bay. Willow’s father died unexpectedly five years earlier and Willow and her family are forced to move when her mother loses her job, and has to rely on the generosity of her brother for a roof over their heads – hence the move.

Willow tends to keep to herself and endures the freezing cold ferry ride to school each day. As the new girl in school she catches the eye of Michael, a ‘mysterious’ fellow student who seems to spend more time out of school than in it. She also forms a loose friendship with Tessa, and In the Middle of Nowhere tells the story about the development of these relationships as well as Willow’s life at home.

To be honest, I really didn’t warm to Willow. She made some incredibly poor choices and was extremely selfish a lot of the time – of course, she’s a 15-16 year old, so in that sense she was a great character. The first couple of ‘mistakes’ she made I cut her some slack, but after that I was kind of amazed that she would continue to make really silly choices.

Tessa was an interesting character who I actually felt quite sorry for. She was clearly lonely and looking for the attention that she wasn’t getting from her parents.

The relationship between Michael and Willow was quite sweet, but I would have liked to have had more direct ‘contact’ with Michael. He was a little bit absent for big chunks of the story, which for me, made the relationship aspect with Willow a little bit vague. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy and I would have liked to have learned a lot more about him.

I liked the ending and felt that Willow had actually grown a little bit, particularly in the relationship with her mother. It will be interesting to see what direction the next book in the series takes as there are plenty of opportunities for a great story from where it finished. Overall, In the Middle of Nowhere is an easy, sweet read.

3 out of 5 stars

Blog Tour: A Long Time Coming by Heather Van Fleet

Abigail Orson has a problem. A love problem to be exact. And she has absolutely no idea how to go about fixing it.

For years now, she’s been chasing her best friend’s brother, demanding things from him that he’s never wanted to give. For one? A real relationship that stems well beyond that dreaded ‘just friend’s’ zone. You see, David Anderson is her perfection to a T. The one and only guy that’s ever had the ability to make her heart beat faster, make her toes curl with the simple blink of his long, girly lashes. But David is also a recovering amputee, and the only thing he really wants out of Abigail, is to be left alone. Abigail’s a fighter though, and losing the one guy who has ruined her for every other man is no longer an option.

He’s a waste of space. A guy with one leg who has lost his motivation to live, to love, to be a man in general. If only the beautiful girl, of his unattainable dreams, would get that through her perfect, blonde, stubborn head! He’s not the right guy for Abigail. He’ll never be worthy of what she deserves. But staying away is almost impossible, especially when he’s just as in love with her as she is him. But Abigail has a life ahead of her, one that’s definitely livable without a nineteen year old gimp like him holding her down. What makes her want to stick around is beyond questionable anymore.

Choices will be made. Lines will be drawn. And the two of them will face challenges that nobody saw coming. David and Abigail may have had thirteen years to fall in love, but the thing is, timing and love have never exactly worked in their favor either...

I currently reside in northern Illinois, with my three little ladies, and my fabulous hubby (and high school sweetheart) Chris. I'm a stay at home mom by day, and an avid and completely obsessive
writer and reader by night.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for books, so of course I've been creating my own little stories since the age of seven. To be honest though, I never really had the confidence or the time to actually sit down and really do something about it until my youngest daugther Isabella was born just two years ago.Bella, as well as her older sisters Kelsey and Emma, are and always will be, my
greatest inspirations.
Resisting Fate, book one in the Pre-Determined trilogy, is my young adult, paranormal baby! It’s packed full of wolves…witches…and one sassy little red-headed teenage girl! I had an absolute blast writing it, and can’t wait to share it with the world! Resisting Fate will be released February 8th, 2013 through Midnight Hour Publishing.

Once again, she wonders if she will ever be enough for Max. Jeanella is forced to make a decision; stay and fight for her man or leave him for good.

As Matthew’s feelings for Becky grow, he’s torn between guilt and heartache over his deceased fiancée. Can Becky break through his wall and help him heal?

When he probed with more questions about what I looked for in query letters, I told him I liked romance novels and I basically looked for potential book boyfriends.

“Book boyfriends?” He chuckled out loud. As I watched, his chest moved to the rhythm of his laugh. “Really?” He took his last bite and chugged his coffee.

“Yes…really.” I had already finished my plate since I was too nervous to talk.

“Is that like for people who can’t get one in real life?” He was totally amused by this notion.

“No…silly,” I giggled. “Readers read books to help them escape from the daily routine of life. Many of these romance books have a swoon-worthy, gorgeous guy with really nice abs and a six pack, who can deliver wild, hot sex.” Just the thought alone made me turn red and I froze when he gave me a heated look. Then, his eyes concentrated on my lips, shifted to my breasts, then back up to my eyes when I said ‘wild, hot sex.’ I just described him and what he could potentially do.

Gravitating toward me, his eyes locked lustfully on mine. His lips were just inches away as they parted to speak and I didn’t know how he got so close to me. “I would like to be your book boyfriend,” he said with the hottest sound that could sing out of his lustrous, lick-able mouth. The puff of his breath on my lips sizzled way down to my sex. He reached out to my face, his thumb sensually sliding, feather light to touch my bottom lip with one long, slow stroke. As I watched his tongue glide over his bottom lip at the same time, I quivered beyond control.

Completely dumbfounded, I sat there staring at him and in my mind, I had already taken off my clothes for him. Blinking because that was all I could do, I wanted to say yes, but my pride and my head knew better and stopped me.

Suddenly, he broke his gaze and it felt like he had just dumped ice water over my head. “Is that what a book boyfriend would say and do?” he chuckled as he picked up our plates and took them to the kitchen.

What just happened? I was almost certain my face was deep red, because I felt it down to my toes.

New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy concludes her sexy Billionaire Bachelors Club series with a fiery romance that refuses to be left at the office…
Bryn James can’t take much more. Smart, sexy Matthew DeLuca is everything she wants in a man, but he’s also her boss—the youngest, hottest vineyard owner in the Napa Valley—and he doesn’t see her as anything more than his shy assistant. That’s all about to change. Armed with a hot new look and an attitude to match, Bryn is determined to catch Matt’s eye… professionalism be damned.

With his winery’s grand reopening approaching, Matt is trying to stay focused, but Bryn is suddenly making it very difficult. He’s always thought her prim demeanor effortlessly sexy, but Matt can’t deny that her transformation is jaw-dropping …and going to make it very difficult to keep his hands to himself.

But when one thing leads to another and suddenly Matt is stripping Bryn bare, he’ll be faced with the biggest risk of his career—and his heart. Can he convince her—and himself—that this might just be more than a no-strings office affair?

“Don’t be so cranky. It’s okay to admit you have a thing for Bryn.” Ivy leans forward in her chair, a secretive smile curling her lips. “I have a feeling she has a thing for you too, you know.”

I do know. And I can’t act on it. Bryn James works for me. She’s my assistant. She’s by my side constantly; we spend more time with each other than probably anyone else in our lives, especially lately what with the winery’s grand reopening approaching. She’s a representative of my business. If I were to fuck around with the help and the relationship fell apart, I’d be in huge trouble. She could screw me over financially every which way by suing me for sexual harassment and I’d be left with a limp dick in my hand and a ruined business.

Yeah. Not going to take the chance. Saw it happen with my father. Not going to let it happen to me.

“It doesn’t matter. Nothing can happen.” I send Ivy a stern look. “And this conversation can never leave this office.” Glancing over her shoulder, I try to see if Bryn is at her desk but the chair is empty.

Thank Christ.

Ivy’s expression goes solemn and she holds up three fingers. “This conversation stays here. Scout’s honor.”

“You were never a scout,” I mutter, afraid she’s making a promise on an untruth. She’ll probably just blab to everyone. Or specifically Archer and Gage. I don’t need to hear their shit.

And I am worrying way too much over this.

She laughs again. “I won’t say a word, I promise. But I need to tell you something, Matt.” She leans in close, her voice dropping. “She’s got a major crush on you. You might not see it but it’s there—sounding in her voice, shining in her eyes, every time she looks at you, talks about you. The way her body turns into yours every time the two of you are together . . . it’s pretty obvious. A body language expert would have a field day with you two.”

Body language expert? What the hell is Ivy talking about? “I have no idea what you’re referring to, but office crushes are just that. Crushes. Harmless attractions no one ever acts on. Period. End of story.”

This is what I keep telling myself. I can’t pursue anything with Bryn, no matter how much I’m tempted to. Not only would it be wildly inappropriate, dating my assistant, but we come from two different worlds. She seems nice and normal, quiet and unobtrusive, and I am anything but. My life has been a circus sideshow for years.

“I get it. You’re trying to do the right thing, and I admire that. So, of course you don’t see anything beyond an efficient assistant in Miss James.”

Well. Ivy’s not too far off the mark. When I first met Bryn, she hardly said two words, kept her head bent when I spoke to her and offered lots of yes-sir and no-sir answers. She had this way of almost blending in with the walls, like she didn’t want anyone to notice her.

So I didn’t.

As we got comfortable working together though, something happened. I’m thinking Ivy had a hand in Bryn’s slow transformation. She actually makes eye contact when she speaks to me, and she’s become somewhat animated. Started to wear bolder colors as well, drawing my attention to her chest though I keep my eyes averted as best I can.

These subtle changes made me notice all of the little things—like the color of her eyes (blue), how her hair looks (like silk and I want to touch it), and the tempting fullness of her lips (they’re spectacular).

Her gaze lingers when she looks at me and sometimes so does mine. Her smile softens, her voice drops lower when she speaks, sparking my imagination. Would she sound like that right before I kissed her? Took off her clothes? Took her to my bed?

Yeah. All of those are dangerous thoughts. I almost prefer the old Miss James. The one who was like the wallpaper—boring and nondescript. Mean to say, but hell, the last thing I need is a distraction.

And she’s become the biggest distraction I’m currently facing. The very last one I need.
