Call-Out Culture And Podcasting
I released a Gay Pride Episode a couple of weeks ago with a mistake I knew might make me seem like a jerk. And it did...maybe.
It wasn't a big mistake, just a single comment, but it was enough that I got a couple of messages about it. And it was enough that I caught it when editing. But I thought, "I think the context of this episode clears everything up."
This episode (hopefully) clears things up as well as talks about how we can move beyond a related topic that all podcasters face sooner or later, "call-out culture."

How Podcast Hosts Make Money
There's a report, or survey, or some other "lies, damn lies, and statistics" thing making its way around podcasting circles that talks about how "podcast hosts" make less money than anybody in podcasting. And that's probably true, when you consider how most podcasts are hobbies and most "podcasters" don't put a lot of time into them.
But it's not true for podcast hosts who understand that we're more than just technicians.

Can $5 Stop Plosives?
I have a cheap "mobile phone" podcast setup that's great for when I'm on the road. The only downside is my mobile mic of choice, a Shure SM58 knockoff by GLS, has a plosive problem.
Maybe it's me. I'm used to broadcast mics like the BP40 and RE20 and am probably too close.
Or maybe it's that the gain on my mobile setup is jacked. Or jacked plus one – there's not a lot of subtlety to it.
Regardless, I was excited to find out about the Popper Blocker, an internal "pop filter" that fits ball-style mics like the GLS 58, I ordered one.
This episode is my "unboxing" and initial review.

Gay Pride (And Your Podcast)
Gay Pride hit Nashville this weekend. Aside from the usual "street preachers" who protest everything that comes to town (even Billy Graham), everybody seemed to have a great time and didn't think a thing about it.
That wasn't always the case. Just a few years ago, events like this were a lot more controversial.
As a podcaster, you can help change culture. And like a Pride parade, you can also let people know they're not alone.

PodX Review
This is a "recap episode" of my experience at PodX. I've been to dozens of podcasting events and this one was unique. In this episode, I talk about why and the lessons you can learn from PodX to bring to your podcast.
While at PodX, I recorded an episode on podcasting with podcasters Jeff Sanders and Mike Stewart. To make sure you don't miss it, subscribe to Build A Big Podcast here.

Throat Relief For Podcasters
I attended PodX in Nashville today and most of my time there was spent having conversations. As you can imagine, this kind of situation can stress your throat, affect your voice, and cause vocal strain.
One of the first people I met at PodX was a rep from Vocal Eze, a spray designed to help keep your throat lubricated and hydrated. Is it a good solution for when you've overused your voice? I test it live on this episode.
I'll have one more PodX-related episode with a full recap of the event on the next episode. To make sure you don't miss it, subscribe to Build A Big Podcast here.

PodX In Nashville - Initial Thoughts
A new podcasting conference is in Nashville this week. It's called PodX and, according to the websites, has been "created for podcast fans, aspiring podcasters, and industry pros."
Is it a good conference for podcasters?
I didn't go today. I did get a message from a friend in the podcasting industry about his experience there, which I share with you on this episode.
I'm going tomorrow to see PodX for myself and will report back with firsthand experience. To make sure you don't miss that episode, subscribe to Build A Big Podcast here.
