A $15 Mic Boom?

This mic boom by Rode is nice. It's around $100 and is sturdy enough to hold "heavy" broadcast mics, such as the RE20. If you want a boom that will last, I recommend it or something by OC White.

But if you're using a "handheld" mic, such as an SM58 or ATR2100 (the mic I used to record this episode), there's a $15 option that may work well for you.

Listed as "NEEWER Adjustable Microphone Suspension Boom Scissor Arm Stand, Max Load 1 KG Compact Mic Stand Made of Durable Steel for Radio Broadcasting Studio, Voice-Over Sound Studio, Stages, and TV Stations" on Amazon, this isn't a bad boom. It's cheap, it's small, and it's not something that will last long with hard use, but if you're gentle with your stuff and don't need it for daily use, it's a good option to consider.

As podcasters, I think it's important that we embrace podcasting and how it's different from radio. And one of the ways that it's different is we can do something great for not a lot of money. For under $100, you can get an ATR2100 with the Neewer boom and, assuming you have a computer to record with, be good to go.

Podcasting Lessons From A Porn Star

If you're wondering if you're going to be offended by this episode, skip it. But if you're open to new ideas about podcasting from unlikely people and places, I have a valuable lesson to share with you.

It's a sad fact that most porn actors would be better at podcasting than "podcasters." Why? Because porn actors understand the power of media and the risks you take when you say something (or do something) that's recorded and distributed worldwide.

I did talk about swingers though, so on second thought, maybe you should skip the book too. But they were "Christian swingers." Maybe that cancels out the offensive part?

Bitter Old Men Of Podcasting

It's really easy to look at somebody who seems to be having more success than you are and get frustrated by this. And it's really easy to completely miss the work and effort that others put into their podcasts (or other creations – like a book), because we only see the finished product, not the work involved.

The is an episode about your work, the work of others, and how we all benefit from what others create, even when some of those creations aren't up to our standards.

A "Mistake" That Adds Humanity To Your Podcasting ... Maybe

The podcast book has me in full-on "promo mode" right now and I'm doing a lot of interviews on other people's podcasts.

One of the things that recently happened was a technical issue with my equipment that I remedied by switching from my studio to my office. Not a big deal, except my office isn't soundproof – and I'm next to a fire station! 

Obviously, it sucks to be doing an interview on somebody else's podcast and have a firetruck go by with sirens blaring. Or does it?

The answer is, it sucks sometimes. Other times, it can actually be helpful.
