The Ethics Of Podcast Editing (And How To Be A Better Host)

The previous episode of Build A Big Podcast with Pedro Pena got me thinking about the ethics of podcast editing. I've done hundreds of podcast and radio interviews over the years and that episode was the first one where my guest hasn't been edited.

There was a reason for it, obviously, but it still felt a bit weird to go through the raw tape from the interview and only focus on myself.

That got me thinking about the benefits (and ethics) of self-editing, so I also attached a few things for you to look for when reviewing your audio that will help you improve your podcast dramatically.

The Stuttering Podcaster

When Pedro Pena was five-years-old, he was attacked by a German Shepherd while walking home from school. After the dog attack, his speech deteriorated to 0% fluency due to shock/trauma.

Today, he hosts a podcast called My Stuttering Life

I met Pedro when he sent me a message on Twitter about my book on podcasting. When I saw "My Stuttering Life" as the name, I was immediately curious about him.

I love what he's doing, so I'm bringing him on this podcast to talk more about his experience as a podcaster and the impact his podcast has had in the year since he launched.

NOTE THAT THIS EPISODE IS UNEDITED. Due to the subject of this episode, I have not edited Pedro's part of the interview. The only edits I made to myself were taking out a few pauses between questions – standard stuff to make me sound better than I really am. I will have more thoughts on this in an upcoming episode, which I hope to release in the next day or two. Subscribe to make sure you don't miss it.

MENTIONED: Franky Banky

Speaking Opportunity For Podcasters

You may have heard the hype around "Podcaster's Kit." This is a package put together by Dan Morris of Tracing The Path (among other things) with "everything a podcaster needs to grow, improve, monetize, and gain confidence."

Dan is launching Podcaster's Kit with a 19-hour livestream and is currently looking for podcasters to interview, panelists, and those who wish to give presentations on podcasting and marketing podcasts.

A Message For The Ladies

A lot has been written about podcasting diversity. And now that podcasters are better connected to each other than ever, and it's easier than ever to discover podcasts, we're finding that podcasting is more diverse than many originally thought.

We're seeing this diversity in the events being organized around podcasting. Many are local, regional, or very specific in their topics.

One of those events is ShePodcasts, a podcasting event for women that's coming to Atlanta.

International Podcast Day

Depending on where you are in the world "today" is International Podcast Day.

But isn't that every day, you ask? Yeah, for podcasters like us it is. Believe it or not though, there are still a lot of people who don't know about podcasting.

What can you do about that? I talk about just that topic on this episode.

There's some cool stuff happening at InternationalPodcast.com, including 30+ hours of live podcast training to help you better spread your message.

A "Google Trick" For Podcasters

The film/TV business has IMDB. The music business has AllMusic. And the podcasting business now has Podchaser.

If you want more traffic from Google, you (and your podcast) need to be listed on Podchaser. These "database" are consistently in the top search results.

You also can benefit by signing up for Podchaser's "feed" option, which is similar to the timeline on Facebook or Twitter. The feature is currently not available to the general public, but you can get early access by using "bigpodcast" as the access key.

Top 10 Mics For Podcasters

Get on a forum for podcasters, ask which microphone is best, and you'll get a lot of options (and arguments).

In the end, it's my belief that the best microphone for podcasting is the one you use, but WhatPods has released a list of top podcasting microphones based on responses from members in their community.

In this episode, I talk about the "Top 10" microphones mentioned on this list and share my experiences with them.

Mentions: My main podcasting microphone, BP40 by Audio-Technica, didn't make the list. The microphone I use on the radio, RE-20 by Electro-Voice, did.

Your Permanent Record

I've talked about "cancel culture" before. I get why it's a thing, but also feel that it's dangerous for free-thought and podcasting due to how quickly people jump on things, oftentimes without having the entire story.

I get wanting to be liked, I get not wanting to offend people, and I get wanting to be sensitive to different cultures and situations. But I also get that people make mistakes and the problems that come from such high pressure to be "perfect."

How is this affecting your podcast (and your message)? More thoughts on this episode...

Podcasting Advice From A Gay Politician

This episode was recorded on the brand new, 3rd Gen Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. The reason why is I'm currently in the middle of recording the audio version of a big ass book on podcasting and I've flipped everything over to that setup (for reasons I explain in this episode).

Also in this episode:

A new podcast file format – think about it Podcasting advice form a gay politician Are you gay? Remember this. Christian? Do this. Atheist? I've got something for you too.

How To Make Your Podcast Sound Better - Part 2

Chris Curran is back with Part Two of this series (here is Part One) on how to make your podcast sound better.

Chris is an audio engineer who, like me, started in the music business. He runs Podcast Engineering School and can be heard of his own podcast about podcasting, Podcast Engineering Show.

On this episode, we focus on equipment. And how to spend $100 (if that's all you've got) or $1000 (if you want to spend more).
