Descendants #71: Yellow (CynQuest Part 2) Chp 4

This entry is part 26 of 26 in the series CurrentIf Cyn squinted, she could see the yellow flashes outlining the second protection spell, five miles distant. Callie had taken Lisa across with the intention that while Laurel maintained the shield around the, Lisa could raise a second one to receive everyone as they were carried across.

Things had been going well. Callie had gotten almost everyone to the safety of Lisa’s shield, set up on the lee of a rock ridge a stone’s throw from the tower. N...

My 5 Favorite Comics Characters (Villain Edition)

Not long ago, I promised I’d post about my favorite characters in comics. It just makes sense for me to do so given the nature of my writing, but the more I thought of it, the more I realized that: 1) I have a lot of favorites and 2) they’re from a diverse assortment of types. I have favorite heroes, villains, support characters, one-offs, etc, so to be fair to them all, I’m splitting them up.

And, because everyone loves a villain, I’m doing those guys first. So here’s a list of my favorite bi...

The Spider’s Seven #22 – The Set-up 3

This entry is part 22 of 22 in the series The Spider's SevenWendell heard Terrell’s reaction on the comm, but being the seasoned con man he was, he kept his expression professional yet caring as it had been since he entered the center. By the time he’d heard it, the orderly had showed him and Coyote to the latter’s room and left them to get settled.

He scanned the place a second time, having already done so the moment he stepped inside. Its was an eight-foot cube with white tile on the floor a...

Descendants #71: Yellow (CynQuest Part 2) Chp 3

This entry is part 25 of 25 in the series CurrentCyn didn’t remember her birth parents. Her earliest memory though, had been of Laurel taking her from the arms of one of her ladies-in-waiting and sitting her on the saddle n front of her. From that day onward, Cyn had loved riding.

She had never thought of horses as anything scary. That was changing.

By the dying light of the camp fire, she saw movement in her peripheral vision: another packhorse she hadn’t seen earlier. For the first time she r...

Dear Aspiring Writers… Do These Things

It’s been a while since I talked about writing on here, so I figure it’s time for another entry into my ‘Dear Aspiring Writers…’ series. In the interest in keeping the general positive vibe I’ve been on for the past few weeks, talking about my favorite super-couples and then favorite superpowers, I’m not going to talk about what not to do this time, but what you should be doing to get more awesome at writing.

Again, I’d like to stress that I’m by no means the old master on the mountain here. I...

The 5 Best Superpowers

You know what’s weird? I’ve been doing this blog thing for about two years now and despite writing a series about superheros and while I’ve talked about writing conventions, fights, and romance more often than anyone might expect, but I basically haven’t said a peep about superpowers.

Seriously, not word one about super powers in over one hundred blog posts! What the hell is wrong with me?

Therefore, I’m taking time this week to remedy that and talk about my favorite superpowers. Now, note that...

Cowboy King: Chapter 0 – The Black Carriage

The moon rose over the land, looking like nothing more than a silver dollar from some far off land. Its most prominent crater was sharply defined that night, looking like the eye of a great, predatory bird scanning the parched landscape for prey.

There was prey out and running that night, but it wasn’t the moon that was hunting it.

Dressed in a care-worn tweed suit and Sunday go-to-meeting shoes that had no business out on the prairie, a man topped one hill and half leapt, half slid down it, st...

Descendants #71: Yellow (CynQuest Part 2) Chp 1

This entry is part 23 of 23 in the series CurrentAn ill wind swept across the hill below the healing house as five women stood in silence, staring at the bones of a giant trapped in a forest of quartz spars. The bones had just been a whole being, shouting threats or possibly dark promises about his master. In the span of moment however, the giant had withered away, disintegrating into yellow motes of dust and his still-standing bones.

The bones weren’t fresh either: they were mottled and brown...
