$250,000/year Online Trivia Business

Collin Waldoch started Water Cooler Trivia back in 2018 and has grown it to more than $20,000/month in recurring revenue 📈

As Collin explained in a recent podcast interview, the business is pretty simple. He started out emailing weekly trivia questions to colleagues at his old 9-to-5, then did it via Mailchimp for his friends’ workplaces. He partnered with a developer to build the current version of it, and reckons the business could grow another 10-20x as is.

Companies like Nike, Lyft and Amazon avail of the service, using it for “asynchronous team building.”

I like that concept: team building exercises that don’t require everyone to be in one place or on a scheduled call. Ideal for a remote working world 🌎

How else could you help companies practice asynchronous team building?

Start a Bridge Business

Here’s something that took me years to figure out. If I had known this earlier, I would have saved a ton of time and earned way more money in my early years of working online.

👉  It’s generally a BAD idea for your first online business to be something like affiliate marketing, ecommerce, or SaaS.

Those types of businesses are pretty complex and usually take months or years of effort before they become profitable.

(For example, it took me 20 months working full-time on my affiliate marketing business before I had my first $10,000 month. And that was with 8 years of prior experience working online.)

A better way to start earning online is with a bridge business: something that gives you a decent income relatively quick, while also letting you develop skills and know-how that you can leverage later.

Say you want to get into ecommerce. It’s tempting to spend a few thousand dollars on a fancy Amazon FBA course and believe you’ll be earning $20k/month by November.

But that almost never happens 😭

More likely, you end up spending $10k on the course + inventory + ads… and a year later you’ve barely earned anything back.

If you really want to get into ecommerce, a better way to do it is via a bridge business. That’s where you try find freelance work or a remote job helping out an established ecommerce business. Maybe you learn some copywriting and offer to beef up their ad copy. Way easier and faster to earn a living that way than trying to build an entire ecommerce business from scratch.

Working with an established business also gives you valuable insight. You get a good sense of what skills and resources you’ll need to build something similar. You gain an appreciation for how much time and effort goes into it, and what the day-to-day of a successful business looks like. And you can develop valuable contacts and maybe even find a mentor or two.

Check out this article for a breakdown of the different types of online business, and how they compare to each other. Understanding that framework will save you a lot of time, money, and frustration 😎

$100,000 ebook sales in 8 months

That’s Steph Smith’s book, Doing Content Right.

Lots of great insight in Steph’s recent AMA on Indie Hackers.

My favorite part is her response to a question about how she managed to write the book while holding down a full-time job:

I always like to remind people that the book was actually 5+ years in the making (learning and distilling the expertise) when I answer this question. I think I originally heard of the Jack Kerouac’s book written in three weeks and an interview where he’s asked “How long did it take you to write ‘On The Road’”, to which Jack replies, “Three weeks”. But when Allen asks, “How long were you on the road for?”, Jack says, “Seven years”. In other words, Kerouac spent seven years and three weeks writing that book.

90-Minute Reminder

A few weeks back I shared this free challenge that gives you several 2-minute movement routines that you can do every 90 minutes during your work day.

It’s great for preventing issues that can result from sitting at your laptop all day. (Eg. back or neck pain.)

My only issue was remembering to take a break every 90 minutes 😕

Problem solved with this free Mac app. And here’s an alternative that works on Window and Mac.

He turned $300k into $2 billion

Garry Tan invested $300k in Coinbase back in 2012.

When the company went public earlier this month, his stake was worth $2 billion 💰

(And yeah, not everyone has $300k sitting around to invest. But even a $1000 investment back then would have resulted in a $6.7 million return.)

Garry tells the story in this YouTube video, explaining why he said yes to the “crazy idea” of Coinbase when so many others said no.

But that video exists mainly to grab your attention. This one will give you the practical info on how to get rich.

This stat blew my mind

Apparently more than 40% of the money the USA has ever printed was printed last year 🤯

With all that money floating around, it’s no surprise that more than 10 million brokerage accounts were opened in the US in 2020 (a new record).

So it seems an unprecedented number of people are eager to invest these days.

Now might be a good time to remember the words of one of the most successful investors of all-time:

“Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.” – Warren Buffett

Elbow Grease and Darts

This is a concept from the aforementioned interview with Collin Waldoch (the trivia guy).

He boils success down to two things: elbow grease 🛠  and darts 🎯

Elbow grease is getting your hands dirty, putting in the work consistently.

Combine that with regularly throwing darts – ie. trying different things, seeing what hits the mark – and success becomes inevitable.

Are you putting enough elbow grease into your business? Are you throwing enough darts? What course do you want to review?

Lastly, remember to leave your honest review of an online business course on eBiz Facts, and I’ll send you a $10 reward if we publish it. (Same goes for your friends; spread the word!)

Right now you can review any of the courses listed on this page 👈

And if you want to review a course that’s not listed there, please fill out this form and we’ll try get it listed ASAP.

And here are 40+ more ways to come up with business ideas.

$225k a year Salesforce Consultant

Check this interview with Brad Rice, who earned $225,000 last year working only 18 hours per week as a Salesforce consultant 💰

(Salesforce is big fancy CRM software used by 85% of Fortune 100 companies.)

According to Brad, with only a few months of learning Salesforce part-time and becoming certified, earning $60,000 a year is very doable right out of the gate.

Side Hustle Nation calls this the “SWAS” strategy: Software with a Service. You learn the ins and outs of a popular software product, then get paid to help companies make the most of that software.

The cool thing about Salesforce in particular is that there seems to be a severe shortage of qualified consultants, so there’s lots of opportunity there if you’re willing to study up for a couple of months.

Alternatively, if you’re already familiar with some other popular software, you could hang out your shingle for that right away. For example, I see several Airtable freelancers charging $100-200 per hour on Upwork 🤑

Deal of the Week: Keyword Hero

Keyword Hero is an SEO tool that lets you see all of your organic keywords and their specific performance metrics inside Google Analytics.

It has solid reviews and at only $49 for lifetime access, it’s a steal compared to major keyword tools like SEMrush and Ahrefs.

Terrifically Tedious

I absolutely ❤ this article from Jacob Kaplan-Moss.

He starts off explaining how the best magic tricks work, and shows how the same principle applies in pretty much any field.

In short: what often appears to be magic or genius is usually the result of putting more time and effort into something than most people would consider reasonable.

Facebook ads vs YouTube ads

Over at UAC, Darko reports that YouTube’s social media market share has grown from 73% to 81% in the last two years, while Facebook’s share has remained flat at 69%.

Opportunity: There’s an obvious supply/demand gap between YouTube and Facebook. Go to Google and type “Facebook ads”. Now do the same for “Youtube ads”. The ecosystem around small businesses advertising on Facebook is HUGE. YouTube? Not so much.

2021 might have created a gap in supply/demand that you can exploit if you can find how to use YouTube ads in an efficient way.

I did a little more digging and Facebook collected about 4x more advertising revenue than YouTube in 2020 Q4, and it looks like ad spend is still trending upwards on both platforms 📈

So you can do well offering ad services on either, but there’s still a lot more money being pumped into Facebook ads right now.

Weapons for Rebels

A famous quote from the CEO of Shopify:

“Amazon is trying to build an empire. Shopify is trying to arm the rebels.”

The rebels are the Shopify store owners. And developers are earning an increasing amount of money selling them weapons (aka apps).

“Our app partner earnings for 2020 reached a record height of $233.7M – that’s more than 2018 and 2019 combined!” – @ShopifyDevs

Do go chasing waterfalls

Paraphrasing from Shaan Puri’s newsletter

You can try to find water in a dessert. Or you can go to a waterfall and get wet.

Choosing what to work on is way more important than how good you are at it.

You can try to be a hero, trying to create demand in a dry market. But it’s better to just go where there’s a ton of demand and offer something (anything) to them. Walk near a waterfall, and just get wet.

The Affiliate Lab Review

Matt Diggity's Affiliate Lab

This is a stub review of Matt Diggity’s Affiliate Lab.

The Affiliate Lab is an affiliate marketing course, created by Matt Diggity and launched in 2017.

(Have you taken this course? Add your review.)

I expect the course is excellent.

Matt is a well-respected SEO and successful affiliate marketer in his own right, and his students look to be getting solid results. Two students even told me they prefer The Lab to Authority Hacker’s TASS (reviewed here).

👉 That’s the story of Tom Hirst, a freelance WordPress developer.

(£500K = $687K, so about $170K per year.)

Some key takeaways from Tom’s thread:

95% profit7 years in business before his first £100K yearBig on niching down3-4 hours per day of focused work is plenty

And my favorite part:

Doing free work on the promise of paid work rarely works out.

Work for free for yourself to build enough reputation so that “clients” never ask you.

How to work for free for yourself:

– Self-initiate projects that prove the results of the service you want to sell
– Write articles and tutorials that make your expertise obvious
– Build an audience of connections that see you as an authority by helping people

A Gold Mine of Newsletter Opportunities

That would be Reddit, according to Keevin at brainstorms.io.

Each community, or subreddit, is 1) organized around a topic, 2) has engaged members, 3) consume written content.

👆 These are the necessary ingredients of a successful newsletter.

Keevin shares examples and includes a break down of the income opportunities for free vs paid newsletters.

Ryan Sneddon’s insightful tips for creating a great newsletterSubstack Local: apply to receive up to $100,000 to create a local newsletterHow to Get a Great Remote Job

Jump ahead to the 27-minute mark of the latest episode of the Tropical MBA Podcast 🎧

You’ll hear an entrepreneur who has hired 100s of people and reviewed 10,000 resumes talk about how you can stand out when applying for a remote job.

My key takeaways:

Keep your resume short, ideally one page. Employers are busy. Save them time.Emphasize experience over skills. Employers care more about what you’ve actually done than what you say you can do.Tailor your resume to each job you’re applying for.Don’t just say where you worked and when. Say what you accomplished, what results you achieved for previous employers.Include a smiling headshot (use photofeeler to find your best photo)Absolutely do not write formal crap like dear sir, dear madam, to whom it may concern, etc.

Great advice from host Dan Andrews on that podcast as well:

How do I get a job if I don’t have 3-5 years of experience? Well, you do something that is equivalent to 3-5 years of experience, and then you explain why that’s a better value proposition for the potential employer.

For example, if you’re a newbie copywriter, you could try rewriting the sales page of the hiring company (this free tool will help). If they’re impressed with that, they won’t care how new you are.

Deal of the Week: Uppbeat Music Library

Uppbeat is a music platform and library for creators, where you can download unlimited tracks for use on your YouTube channel, podcast, TikTok videos, etc 🎶

The Uppbeat Premium plan usually costs $6.99/month, but this lifetime deal costs only $59. (That amount would usually only get you 9 months of access.)

See all deals this week 😎

$60k her 1st year low-content publishing

Low-content publishing is selling books that don’t have much content. Think journals, diaries, notebooks, etc 📚

Rachel Harrison-Sund reports that she earned $60,000 creating and selling these kinds of books online back in 2017, while only working on the business part time.

She then went on to earn $140k in 2018 🤑

In a recent video, Rachel says that competition in this space has increased dramatically in recent years, but it sounds like there’s still opportunity there if you’re skilled and committed.

Also see this 2019 interview with Rachel and two other successful low-content publishers.

$4885/month for sharing wifi

Here’s something from the premium Trends newsletter (reviewed here with $100 discount offer)…

It’s basically a wireless router you can buy, and then give other people access to. You earn cryptocurrency as you share the access.

From the Helium website …

By deploying a simple device in your home or office, you can provide your city with miles of low-power network coverage for billions of devices and earn a new cryptocurrency, HNT.

Here’s an example of a Helium device in Austin, Texas 👈

Click the rewards tab on that page and you can see that the device has earned 315.60 HNT over the past 30 days, which works out to about $4885 at the current price of HNT.

The device itself costs about $400 and there are ~26,000 in service already, most of them in North America and Europe.

From the Trends report:

If you have multiple properties in the same town, a Helium hot spot in each could offset the cost of the mortgages. If you don’t own property, partner with local business owners or Airbnb hosts, setting up Helium rigs in their buildings in exchange for a portion of the monthly output.

One of these for every remote skill

Aleksandr Volodarsky is the Ukrainian 🇺🇦 cofounder of Lemon.io, “a marketplace of vetted offshore engineers.”

He’s aiming to grow the company from $2.7 million to $10 million in GMV this year, and is tracking his progress on Twitter.

In a recent interview with Andrew Warner on Mixergy, Aleksandr talked about other opportunities for marketplace businesses, such as marketplaces for no-code developers, Notion experts, Salesforce experts, etc.

Paraphrasing Andrew:

For every remote skill, there should be a managed marketplace like Lemon.io.

Aleksandr’s advice is to build a very niche marketplace, easier to get traction that way.

An example is Funnel Rolodex, a marketplace for freelancers who offer services related to building and optimizing funnels. That business does $58k in monthly revenue.

$4,104 in March from 3.7k subscribers

That’s a YouTube channel called Your Friend Andy, started 10 months ago.

Only four videos on the channel have more than 10k views 👀

So how the hell did it earn $4,104 in March alone?

Andy himself explain in this Twitter thread.

Worth reading the whole thing but here are his key takeaways:

1) Pick a profitable niche
2) Commit at least 6 months
3) Focus on creating content that gets into search results
4) Start using affiliate links early
5) Constantly improve your video quality
6) If you do these things, the algorithm will eventually reward you

Learn Skills, Earn Crypto

1729 is a newsletter that “offers $1000 in crypto per day for completing tasks & tutorials.”

I’ve been keeping an eye on it for a few weeks. They don’t actually post a new task every day – only 3 posted in April so far – and $100 in Bitcoin seems to be the most one person can earn per task.

But it’s still pretty interesting 🤔

You can see all the tasks here.

The latest requires you to read an essay on quantum computing, answer a few questions about it, then keep up with subsequent emails.

High-level authority site training

Authority Hacker’s pro training is available again from this Sunday (April 18th) at 1pm EST.

The doors will be open for about a week.

Be aware that the training is NOT for beginners – see their TASS program for that – but if you’re already earning $1000’s per month from your website it’s well worth checking out 👍

Small efforts, day in and day out

A quote I came across this week, attributed to Robert Collier:

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”
