Dru uses a freemium business model, putting out a free version of his newsletter each week, and offering a premium version for paid subscribers.
Wes Kimbell has a breakdown and insights from Dru’s business success here, estimating that trends.vc pulls in as much as $300,000 per year, despite only launching 18 months ago
One of the key insights there should sound familiar to my regular readers:
Nothing Else MattersDru urges anyone starting a product today should focus on building the audience first. Build your audience and solidify trust with them before you go paid.
Dan Norris has been an entrepreneur for 13 years. During that time he started tons of businesses but has “only done 2 things that have ever worked.”
One was an unlimited WordPress support service – which got acquired by GoDaddy – and the other a brewery
The reason your business is not taking off is because your product is not good enough. Period.
It’s not interesting enough, or it’s not cheap enough (yes this obsession with raising prices is a huge pitfall), it’s not different enough, it’s not useful enough, it doesn’t solve a big enough problem for enough people (niching down is another huge mistake), it’s just not good enough.
Is your product or service good enough? If not, how can you make it significantly better?
Related: they figured out a way to deliver a product that was “10x better and 5x cheaper”… and grew the company to $350 million
Anushka Rathod reveals how she did it.
Check her Instagram here, and you’ll see that many of her videos are in Hindi
One of Anushka’s tips for success on Instagram:
Pick a niche. Something that hasn’t been done before. Create your own style, the accounts that have grown the fastest have had a first mover advantage in their niche.
Notice how Anushka’s advice contradicts Dan Norris saying that “niching down is another huge mistake.”
Thing is, they’re probably both right. Sometimes niching down is the right thing to do, and sometimes it’s not. There’s no magic formula that works for everyone. Test things out and see what works best for you
The Sleep Judge surveyed over 1000 people about their morning routines and published their findings here.

$15k/month Affirmation AppIt’s called Mantra, available for iOS and Android.
The creator – Efe Helvacı from Turkey
– tells the story of the app via Indie Hackers.
In short:

Keep an eye out for subpar products and services in your everyday life, and brainstorm how you might improve upon them.
Crazy ways to make a lot of moneyCodie Sanchez asked for examples on Twitter and got lots of great responses
One of my favorites is this guy buying and selling pennies, enough to pay for 2+ years of living expenses and an MBA. Some clever examples of entrepreneurial thinking in there, like getting a part-time job at FedEx to avail of the 40% employee discount so he could ship pennies more cheaply.
One response to Codie’s thread points out a common theme from the examples:
Momentos + Interviewbought an asset cheap, maybe did something to it, but definitely let some amount of time pass, and sold the asset.
My latest batch of personal ramblings are here
And you might like a recent interview I did with Letterlist, about how I grew this newsletter to 16,000+ subscribers.
Thank you for being a part of that growth, btw. You’re awesome
Two investors start with $100,000 each

So every two years, they would both seem to average out to a 20% gain.
But fast-forward 50 years, and their returns look like this:
Investor A: $11.7 millionInvestor B: $5.1 millionThe takeaway: you don’t need big flashy wins to achieve outstanding results. Just rack up small wins consistently and let time do the rest.
What small win can you rack up today?

The basic premise is to do digital marketing for local businesses. Charge them a retainer and deliver a steady stream of leads every month.
Samuel gives the example of dessert shops
and describes how to go from $0 to $10k/month in 60 days or less
It will likely take longer if you don’t already have some digital marketing or sales skills, but the process sounds solid. Worst case scenario, you’d learn a ton from trying this.

Jane Austen’s Frequent DistractionsJane Austen died more than 200 years ago at age 41 but is still renowned for writing such novels as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma
According to a profile on her work habits in Daily Rituals – fantastic book, btw – Austen did much of her writing on scraps of paper between frequent interruptions in the family sitting room. The house received a steady stream of visitors, often unannounced, but only close family and friends ever knew of Austen’s sneaky writing habit (she published under a pseudonym).
Of course it’s best to set yourself up somewhere sans distractions to do your work. But when that’s not possible, try to channel your inner Jane Austen and do awesome work anyway
A few AI-powered writing tools have come out since the dawn of GPT-3 last year
One of them is copy.ai, and there are some impressive demos for it on YouTube.
Here’s a copywriter running through 6 ways he uses the tool to generate ideas and speed up his work process. And here’s someone using the tool to quickly generate promotional copy for a live online training event.
I reckon it won’t be long before an AI assistant is part of every copywriter’s toolkit, like spellcheck and autocomplete but better.
copy.ai have a free 7-day free trial if you want play around with it yourself.
Chimp Essentials is an online course teaching people how to use Mailchimp’s email marketing software.
It sells for $269 a pop and creator Paul Jarvis reveals that the course earns him $200,000 a year with a 99.5% profit margin
Reminds me of Nat Eliason’s course teaching people how to use Roam Research. Nat launched his course at the start of 2020 and by the end of the year it had earned him about $500,000.
From those stories you might think it’s easy to create and sell a course teaching people how to use popular software. But before you go down that path, definitely think about how you would market it. Paul and Nat have done well with their courses largely because they launched them to big audiences they had taken the time to build
Nat has a 10-minute video detailing how he built an audience for his first 5-figure course launch back in 2015.
Piggyback Software#8 in my list of ways to come up with a business idea: piggybacking
Find big a thriving business and look for ways to piggyback on their success.
Paul and Nat both did that by creating training courses for popular software products.
You can also try to build software that piggybacks on other software.
For example, super.so lets you build a website off the back of Notion, a popular workspace software with more than 4 million users. The founder of super.so says he hit $30k MRR in only a year
Two weeks ago I listed several examples of successful apps built for Shopify. Same piggyback principle at work there.
8 (Realistic) Passive Income IdeasNoah Kagan lays out 8 passive income ideas in this 14-minute video.
He earns passive income in all 8 ways himself, amounting to about $40,000 per week
I like what Noah says about active vs passive income:
Significant wealth comes from active income. Conserving and maintaining your wealth comes from passive income. A lot of people are completely delusional. They’re like, “I’m gonna do one thing one time and be rich forever.” It doesn’t work that way.
In other words, it’s pretty much impossible to generate consistent passive income before you’ve figured out how to generate consistent active income.
Gotta crawl before you can walk and all that.
(Btw, if you’re reading this early on Friday, you might still be able to pick up some software deals from AppSumo’s first annual Sumo Day. AppSumo is Noah’s company, mentioned in the above video.)
$1 Million Selling SlimeJacob Karram tells his story via CNBC Make It on YouTube.
He started the business at age 17 with $100, and now sells 4000 jars of slime online each week. Took him years to get to that point though, and apparently he still works 65 hours per week

Acquired recently put out an episode about Ethereum and its founder Vitalik Buterin:
If you thought Mark Zuckerberg IPO-ing Facebook at $100B by age 27 was something, just wait until you hear the story of this high school junior creating $500B (!!) of market cap by the same age…
It’s a crazy story, but what especially struck me was how Vitalik got into crypto in the first place: as a freelance writer at the age of 17.
The first article he wrote about Bitcoin earned him the equivalent of $3.50.
Through his writing and research, Vitalik learned a ton about crypto, networked with key people, and built up a big following… all of which helped him go on to create Ethereum.
Coincidentally, How I Built This recently did an episode on how Mailchimp grew to $800 million in annual revenue
Ben Chestnut and his co-founders actually started out as freelance web designers in the early 2000’s. It was a few years before email marketing software became their main thing.

$150,000 in 12 days6-figure side-hustleForget About Goals$50k/month in 5 hours/weekThink about your heroHow to build Instagram, Shopify, Reddit100+ remote jobs at ShopifyRandom PizzaMomentos + Finance ReportHeads up for Tuesday$150,000 in 12 daysI don’t often mention Kickstarter projects in this newsletter because it’s mostly physical products on there and IMO that’s a very advanced type of online business (Level 5).
But there are lots of great takeaways from this portable blackout curtain that raised $120,000 in only 12 days
The two founders – Mark and Hannah – quit their 9-to-5 jobs in February and shared their story on Reddit a few days ago.
Three things that stood out to me:
First, they did a TON of work before actually launching the product, a good reminder that success is largely determined by what you do when nobody’s watching.
Second, before getting too deep they “spoke to so many helpful Kickstarter entrepreneurs who’ve been through this before.”
Before diving into a project yourself, find people who have already done it and ask what they’d do differently if they were starting over. Learn from their mistakes to avoid making your own.
Third, Mark and Hannah hired quite a bit of help:
A firm to build out the Kickstarter page and project manageA video production company for the Kickstarter videoA social media managerMore than 500,000 projects have been launched on Kickstarter and many of them hire help. You could earn a decent income providing one of the above services or similar.
6-figure side-hustleAn article about Steph Smith: Create 6-figures and 3,000 customers by NOT quitting your job
Steph works for The Hustle and has leveraged her day job to build a big audience and successful side-business of her own
That’s a great example of how the right job – especially the right remote job – can be a shortcut to entrepreneurial success.
Another example: say you want to start an ecommerce store. Which path is more likely to lead to success…
Spend loads of time and money starting your own store from scratch and hope to figure everything out as you go.Land a job working for an established store, get paid to learn the ropes, then go start your own ecomm biz.
If you struggle to reach your goals, have a read of this article from James Clear.
It’s an excerpt from his excellent book, Atomic Habits.

$50k/month in 5 hours/weekCheck out LeadCookie.com.
You sign up for their service and they do outreach on your behalf to generate leads for your business.
Here’s an interview with Jake Jorgovan, the founder of the company, who says he started it “for virtually no costs” and runs the whole thing using no-code tools (Airtable, Zapier, etc.)
Now it generates $40-60k in revenue each month while he spends 4-6 hours per week on the business
Here’s how he found his first customers:
I reached out to a ton of people i knew and sold 15 customers in the first two weeks by going to people in my network.
Are there people in your network who might pay for your product or service? Or might they know someone who would?
Think about your heroFrom the book Mindset by Carol Dweck:
Think about your hero. Do you think of this person as someone with extraordinary abilities who achieved with little effort? Now go find out the truth. Find out the tremendous effort that went into their accomplishment—and admire them more.

How to build Instagram, Shopify, RedditNo-code tool Bubble has a series of articles showing how you can use their app to build clones of successful startups.
Reminded me of Jesus Vargas, who started a low-code development agency in March 2020 and earned $150,000 his first year
And here are 7 more ways to find a remote job.
Random PizzaBack to no-code for a minute, here’s a fascinating no-code business called Random Pizza
It’s a subscription service where you pay $20/month and…
You set your preferences on what times we can deliver and where, whether that be home, work, or your mom’s basement. Any given month 2 pizzas delivered, you guessed it, randomly.
Checking a couple of interviews with the founder, it doesn’t sound like Random Pizza is financially successful – financial success isn’t exactly the point of his projects – but I love the concept of “Serendipity as a Service.”
What else could you do this with?
Flowers, notes of appreciation, maybe a barbershop quartet?
My latest batch of personal ramblings are on Patreon.
And here’s how much my business earned and spent last month
AppSumo is a software deals website that always proves popular when I mention their deals in this newsletter.
I’ve grabbed a few ridiculous deals on there myself over the years, including one for $49 lifetime that replaced a $21/month software I was using. So far that one deal has saved me almost $500
From Tuesday to Friday next week (July 13-16) AppSumo are having their first annual Sumo Day.
Keep an eye out for lots of great deals during those 72 hours.

23-year-old Anthony Baroud started a channel about dental hygiene last September. A month later he tweeted that he’d hit 100 subscribers. Now he has 3.6 million subscribers and Social Blade estimates he’s earning at least $78k per month in ad revenue (and possibly more than $1 million per month)
According to The Publish Press:
It wasn’t until March of this year that his channel really started taking off thanks to YouTube Shorts. Anthony’s first short-form video amassed 22 million views. Now, Digest Dental has signed with the same management as creators like MrBeast and ZHC.
Two takeaways from Anthony’s success:
There’s plenty of money to be made in “boring” nichesIt’s worth experimenting with new platform features (like #shorts on YouTube)Related: 22 video thumbnails to increase video views (Anthony uses many of these)
Tokenized himself for $20,000That’s 23-year old Frenchman Alex Masmej
Audience FirstLast year I “tokenized” myself, meaning I created a tradeable cryptocurrency whose ticker, utility, and goal centered on me. I raised $20,000 in just four days… $ALEX was funded by patrons who would receive 15 percent of my income over the next three years
Whenever I hear a story like the one above, I say to myself… hmm, I bet he’d previously built up some significant social capital.
And sure enough, Alex had
He had been active in the Ethereum community, amassed more than 17,000 followers on Twitter, and was a speaker at an Ethereum conference in Paris (where he first announced his private token).
A recent tweet that sums up the importance of building an audience:
4 kinds of side business
When you have already built a product, it is TOUGH to find the right audience.
When you have already built an audience, it is EASY to figure out the right product.
Experienced entrepreneur Justin Mares lays them out:
buy an existing assetlaunch a product on a marketplace with existing demandlaunch a unique, one of a kind product in a new space where you can buy demand (adwords, facebook, etc.)arbitrage (craigslist, airbnb, trading, uber)
He goes through each in detail and refers to the first as “probably the easiest, and (annoyingly) requires the most money to pull off.”
But here’s a new site where you can buy small web based projects for less than $5000.
Complement Justin’s framework with my 19 types and 6 levels of online business.
Shopify app developers rejoice……because Shopify just announced that they’re reducing revenue share on apps to 0% for the first $1 million earned each year, down from 20%.
That amounts to as much as $200,000 annually back in the pockets of each Shopify app developer
App Radar has a good overview of fees charged by app stores, and it seems to me that Shopify’s announcement makes every other store look bad.
For inspiration, here are some successful Shopify apps listed on Indie Hackers:
$5k/month Shopify dropshipping app$29k/month Whatsapp chat button$25k/month bundling app$16k/month split testing app$6.5k/month analytics appAnd here’s a 14-minute video that gives a good overview of Shopify app development and how it compares to freelance Shopify development (hint: the latter is easier).
Journey to $10k per monthJessica Pereira is a freelance writer documenting her journey to earning $10k/month at Freelance to Fortune.
She started 18 months ago and just had her best month, earning $4919.93 in June
Sean Ogle will tell you that freelance writing is one of the best ways to start earning online, and I tend to agree.
I love how Jessica is documenting her progress and sharing the journey. Doing that, she’s building an audience and attracting clients.
It’s a good reminder that you don’t need to be an established expert to start a blog / YouTube channel / whatever. You can instead be a curious student, learning as you go and sharing what you learn.
Another example of this: a 15 year old on Reddit sharing how he’s earning £500/month doing video and podcast editing, and what he’s learned so far. I bet he got a few job offers in his DMs afterwards.
The way it works for most peopleJane Friedman writing about how much authors earn:
This is the way it works for most people. You don’t earn that much at first, but you keep at it. If you can stay in the game longer than others dropping away from discouragement and disillusionment, it’s possible to see results.
Along the same lines, Sam Parr did a great podcast
this week on why most startups take longer than you think, with insights from companies like Pandora and bigwigs like Marc Cuban.

Zero to 7 Figure Exit in 8 MonthsAbout a year ago Danny Postma started building Headlime, an AI tool for writing marketing copy.
This week he announced – at age 27 – that he had sold the company for more than $1 million
Sounds like a contradiction to the point above, but there’s an interesting nugget buried in Danny’s AMA on Indie Hackers:
I got lucky my 4th startup was the big winner. For some it takes more than 10 to find the perfect one.
Danny also notes that he’d been a designer since the age of 16, had previously launched a project related to Headlime, had been learning to code for 2.5 years, and had built up a solid base income as a freelancer.
So don’t be fooled: every overnight success takes a ton of work.
Million-Dollar Ecommerce StoresStarter Story has 145 of them listed here for your inspiration
Three that caught my eye:
$7.8M/year back shavers$4.8M/year origami folding kayaks$3M/year weighted blanketsJust remember that physical product businesses are usually the most complex / difficult / expensive to build, according to this framework.
IMO, doing freelance work or getting a remote job are still the easiest ways for most people to start earning online.

$1500/Month Passive IncomeHow To Promote Your BlogRank and Rent SEODeal of the Week: $100 Trends discountHack to Read Paywalled ContentYoung brothers earning $200k onlineTop 1% of all PodcastsThe Advantage Of PainBuying Facebook GroupsLiking these emails?$1500/Month Passive IncomeThis is a great and nuanced piece about what it takes to earn passive income online.
The woman who wrote it – Julia Horvath – is 29 years old and from
Hungary. Her business is teaching people how to speak Hungarian, proving that no niche is too small to provide a decent income.
I like how Julia emphasizes that generating passive income takes a lot of hard work:
don’t assume you can generate income within a few months. It took me over a year of hard work and zero cash flow to figure it all out. In the beginning, there’s too much you don’t know. No matter how good you are, you’ll inevitably make mistakes, all of which take time.
Another great takeaway from Julia is that you don’t need to be an expert to share useful info and make money doing it. She is not a qualified linguist or language teacher, yet earns money teaching Hungarian online.
And, as reported on Reddit, sharing what she’s learned about business in the above article earned her $5000 through the Medium partner program
Backlinko has 23 strategies for doing just that.
If you don’t have your own blog, you could probably turn many of those strategies into a service that established bloggers would pay for.
For example:
LinkedIn SyndicationTurn Blog Content Into YouTube VideosCreate Cool Visuals, Charts, and ImagesPlay around with those ideas, create some samples, then reach out to your favorite blogs and pitch them on your service, noting that Backlinko recommends the strategy you’re offering to implement for them
Related: 11 jobs every creator needs help with (and would be willing to pay for)
Rank and Rent SEOThis is where you build a local services website – eg. landscaping services in Baton Rouge – get it ranking in Google, then sell the leads to local service providers
Side Hustle Nation recently interviewed someone who hit 6-figures after doing this for a year.
Matt Diggity also put out a nice video and article on the topic recently, listing four reasons why “the Rank and Rent model is so awesome”…
Deal of the Week: $100 Trends discount
First, because it’s easy as hell. You’re gonna be targeting local keywords rather than national ones. You’re not gonna be ranking for dentists, you are ranking for Dentists Chicago, or even easier Dentists North Park which would be a neighborhood in San Diego.
This makes a Rank and Rent model awesome for beginner SEOs.
You may know it as Trends.co, Sam Parr’s premium newsletter, or the private community sometimes mentioned on the popular My First Million podcast.
Sign up and you get premium market insights (like this one) and a high-level private community for entrepreneurs (members include big names from the startup world). I’ve been in there for about a year now and it’s easily worth the price of admission.
You can do a $1 trial for your first week, then it’s $299 for the year, but you can knock $100 off that price with this link
(A bunch more deals you might be interested in on this page, including a $49 lifetime deal on WP Reset, and a 73% discount on popular VPN software.)
Hack to Read Paywalled ContentAnnoyed by websites that paywall their content?
Here’s a 1-minute video showing you an easy way to view such content using Google Chrome.
(That said, if you read a lot of content on a paywalled site, do consider paying them a little each month to help keep the lights on. The above hack is best used for sites you rarely visit.)
Young brothers earning $200k onlineBack in 2019, 21-year-old Ch Daniel and his 15-year-old brother started legitcheck.app.
It’s a service where you pay $20 or more and they tell you if your sneakers/handbag/whatever are authentic or fake.
In the past 12 months the business has earned them more than $200,000
Even more impressive when you consider that English isn’t their first language and their main deliverable is a custom-written note to each customer.
I especially love the part where Ch breaks down where they got lucky
and how they capitalized on that luck.
A fascinating read from Jake McNeill on Reddit, where he breaks down what it takes to create a top 1% podcast
There are 2 million podcasts.
90% of podcasts don’t get past episode 3. That’s 1.8 million who quit. Of the 200,000 left, 90% will quit after 20 episodes. That’s another 180,000 gone. To be in the top 1% of podcasts in the world you only need to publish 21 episodes of your podcast.
Your competition is not the 2 million podcasts. It’s the 20,000 podcasters who didn’t quit.
Similar story for becoming a top 1% blogger, YouTuber, whatever. Stick with it longer than most people consider reasonable, and there’s a good chance you’ll be able to make a living from it.
Also check out Jake’s post for the WOOP mental model, which is like positive visualization but better
Jon Morrow has spent his life in a wheelchair and can only move his face. He has also earned millions writing online
Whenever you feel like giving up, read this article Jon wrote: 7 Life Lessons from a Guy Who Can’t Move Anything but His Face
A taste:
Buying Facebook GroupsThe degree of success you achieve in life is directly proportional to the amount of pain you can tolerate. If you ever want to accomplish big things like building a successful business, becoming the best in your field, or changing the world in some way, you need to start training yourself to endure the pain all those things require.
Mushfiq from The Website Flip experimented with this recently, buying two Facebook groups to drive traffic to his niche sites and increase their valuations
He shares insights on a 54,000 member group he purchased for $2,500. He had some success driving traffic and was able to recoup his investment selling multiple brand shoutouts for $500 a pop.
I’m surprised FB groups can be bought at such a low price. You can likely leverage this for many types of online business.
Liking these emails? If so, please click through to my Facebook page, look for “do you recommend eBiz Facts,” then click yes and write something nice

How much does Just One Dime cost?
Just One Dime Amazon Arbitrage Mastery costs $997 USD per year and includes training videos, tutorials, and weekly live Q&A workshops.
Just One Dime Amazon FBA Mastery doesn’t have a publicly advertised price and they require you to apply first to see if you qualify.
Keep in mind that you’ll also need some money to buy inventory and possibly spend on advertising. The total amount you need depends on the strategy you’re using for selling on Amazon (Arbitrage/ Private Label/ Wholesale/ etc.) and the product you’re planning to sell. But generally speaking, you’ll need at least a few thousand dollars extra.

$1 million a year cloning PhotoshopPassive income makes no senseDeal of the Week: SkillshareHow much money do Skillshare teachers make?Bonus Deal: BC StackIs this course worth $4997?This site earns $8000 per monthWorkspace Inspiration$10k/month selling printables on EtsyAffiliate marketing on InstagramMomentos$1 million a year cloning PhotoshopThis is one of the most fascinating solo-entrepreneur stories I’ve seen in a while.
Seven years ago, Ivan Kuckir started building Photopea, a free web-based version of Adobe Photoshop, coded mostly in JavaScript.
He started monetizing it four years ago and reports that he’s earned “almost $1 million in the last 12 months, 90% from ads”
Ivan remains the only person working on the project and his hosting costs amount to less than $100 per year.
He’s quite the advocate for entrepreneurship:
Passive income makes no senseWhen you start your own project, you never know, if it will ever make $250k a year. But if you get hired, you can be quite sure, that you will never make more than $250k a year.
From a book called The Road Less Stupid (our latest read in the FBB book club)…
Passive income makes about as much sense as passive health or passive relationships. You would scoff at the idea of a passive weight loss technique or a passive gold medal in the Olympics or a passive marriage. But financial shamans write hundreds of these books every year counting on you to lurch to the door marked “Something for Nothing.”
Next time you see someone selling a course that promises to get you quickly earning $10,000 a month starting from scratch, apply the same claim to sports and see how ridiculous it sounds: “This course will teach you how to become a pro tennis player in 6 weeks, even if you’ve never picked up a racket before!”
Related: the truth about passive income
Deal of the Week: SkillshareSkillshare is one of the biggest and best places to learn new skills that will help you build and grow an online business
Right now you can get a full month of free access to Skillshare Premium. Sign up and take as many courses as you like.
Popular course categories:
Digital MarketingFreelance & EntrepreneurshipFreelance WritingVideo ProductionWeb DevelopmentHow much money do Skillshare teachers make? You can sign up to Skillshare as a teacher and earn money for every minute someone watches one of your classes.
Here are a few income reports I found from Skillshare teachers on YouTube, all within the past year:
$43,086 in six years teaching design and drawing$20,706 in first year teaching social media marketing$849 in first year teaching content marketing$3,831 in two years teaching singing$477 in three months teaching social media marketing$515,000 in one year teaching productivityThat last video is from Ali Abdaal, a 26-year-old junior doctor who earned about $31,000 from his day job last year, and another $1.3 million from his various online business ventures
(Somewhat related: you can earn up to $25/hour as a community English tutor on iTalki, and up to $44/hour if you have a qualification to teach English.)
Bonus Deal: BC StackThe BC Stack is a bundle of 65+ internet marketing courses and products available for only $47 until about midnight on Saturday, June 26th.
I’m not familiar with any of the products in the bundle but I stumbled across it this week and it sounded too good not to share
It’s an Amazon FBA course called Amazing Selling Machine and we’ve reviewed it here.
One student calls it a “horrible course,” another calls it “a great course but a tough industry,” and one big-time influencer made so many misleading claims about it that I responded with a big rant on Twitter
It’s OwnTheYard.com, a site about backyards and gardening
Spencer Haws is the owner of the site and reported in a recent tweet that it’s on pace to earn $4000 in June from display ads, and up to another $4000 from the Amazon affiliate program.
Added to my list of affiliate marketing website examples
Maker Stations has lots of ideas and inspiration for your home office.
$10k/month selling printables on EtsyEtsy is best known as a marketplace where people buy and sell arts and crafts.
But here’s an Etsy store that sells printables for businesses – eg. intake forms, consent forms, price lists, etc – and earns $10,000 per month
The owner of that store, Rachel Jones, was interviewed on Side Hustle Nation recently. My key takeaway from the interview is how many times Rachel failed before finding a winning product. She tried and failed to sell budgeting templates and wall art on Etsy before she got into printables.
Most people would give up after the first or second failure. But Rachel kept going and used what she learned to eventually succeed
Persist and experiment. Do those two things consistently, and only a fool would bet against you.
Affiliate marketing on InstagramInstagram says this will soon be possible…
In the coming months, we’ll begin testing a native affiliate tool that will allow creators to discover new products available on checkout, share them with their followers and earn commissions for the purchases they drive — all within the Instagram app.
I suspect this will be especially lucrative for fashion
or lifestyle accounts with big followings.

5-Figures a Month via OnlyFans50,000 YouTube SubscribersHow to become a digital nomadShe launched multiple 6-figure courses7 ways to lose moneyHow to get good clientsI happily paid $200 for thisBought for $16k, sold for $625kHow to earn $75k affiliate marketingTaken any of these?5-Figures a Month via OnlyFansFascinating interview on the Indie Hackers pod with two OnlyFans creators who consistently earn 5-figures a month.
If you’re not familiar with OnlyFans, it’s basically Patreon but for adult content
The two creators interviewed – Savannah Solo and Aella – are apparently in the top 1% of earners on the platform, and Savannah has earned as much as $105,000 on there in a single month.
Give it a listen and you’ll hear about the hacks they’ve used to grow their audience, including tips for TikTok and how comedic content affected revenue.
50,000 YouTube SubscribersJanet Newenham surpassed that mark on her YouTube travel channel last week
What does it take to reach that level?
Janet wrote on Facebook a few days ago…
Well, it only took 2 full years of working my absolute butt off on YouTube (posting almost daily videos, and often not taking a day off for months at a time) to FINALLY crack the algorithm and skyrocket my growth.
Today I’m celebrating 2 million views on YouTube in the past 28 days. TWO MILLION. Thanks for your support over the years in helping me turn my passion for video into a “real job”.
x
Despite all the hard work and recent growth, Janet says the advertising revenue she gets from her channel is “still pathetic.” Social Blade estimates that she’s at max $8.2k per month, but I suspect the real number is around $2k.
Just goes to show that success on YouTube is a tough grind
Long-time digital nomad Neville Mehra .
You might remember Neville from our interview with him a while back, where he shared how he has earned more than $1 million online.
Hint: it has something to do with alarm clocks
Lauren Valdez writes that she’s helped launched multiple 6-figure courses, and gives three pieces of advice for launching your own
I can’t emphasize the first enough: build an audience before building your course.
Lauren is especially bullish on building an audience in the form of an email list…
The critical breaking point is about 5,000 email subscribers. We worked with a creator who had never sold a single product to his audience with an email list of 6,000. He priced his first course at $1,000 and did a 6-figure launch on his first try. People don’t see that he spent more than three years building up that audience by consistently creating valuable content.
Related:
Lauren also has some good insights on how to actually build your audience New Trends.vc report covering online courses7 ways to lose moneyTongue-in-cheek Andrew Tye shares seven anti-wealth tactics you can use to lose money fast
He goes on to share five tips for actually making money.
The last is “think for yourself”…
I happily paid $200 for thisYou can find so many guides for how to make money online or how to get rich quick or how to make money from home. The guides themselves make more money online for people working at home than any of the methods they promote. Don’t get carried away with unsubstantiated sales copy. Use your brain and do some research.
I recently hired this person to help me submit a trademark application for eBiz Facts.
She offers this as a productized service on Upwork. (Upwork added the productized service feature recently, similar to gigs on Fiverr.)
She charges $200 minimum for the service and I’d say it took her less than 2 hours to do everything. Her work and communication were excellent and she saved me lots of time/hassle, so I’m a happy client
Zooming out, I reckon there are lots of productized services like this that people – especially business people – would pay for. You just need to find something that’s a pain in the ass for people to figure out and do themselves, become proficient at it, then offer to do it for them.
Probably many opportunities for this kind of thing when it comes to business admin, research, legal filings, insurance claims, etc.
Next time you encounter a process that’s a pain in the ass for you, think about how much you’d pay someone to take care of it for you. And don’t just think about how much you’d pay at your current income level. Assume you were earning $100k/year or more. How much would you pay then?
You might remember Tom Hirst from a previous newsletter, noting that he’d earned £500K+ from freelancing in 4 years
Tom shares in this thread how to get good clients and avoid bad ones.
Definitely check it out if you’re on the freelance path, lots of great advice in there.
This one got the most likes:
The lowest paying clients are the hardest to please.
Tom also has a free ebook about freelancing
SEO pro Matt Diggity details in a new video how he bought a website 2.5 years ago for $15,811 and recently sold it for $625,591.
In total, he invested $57,905 into buying and growing the site. It earned less than $100 in affiliate commissions the first month he owned it, but over the 2.5 years it earned $282,513 and was at about $20k/month when sold.
Total earnings from the site in 2.5 years: $908,104.
Almost a 16x return on investment
Matt drops a lot of great info and insight in the video.
He also mentions in there his affiliate marketing course called The Affiliate Lab. We recently collected 20+ reviews of that and found that students rate it very highly overall. ($200 discount for the course via this link.)
How to earn $75k affiliate marketingKhris Steven writes about how he started promoting ClickFunnels as an affiliate back in 2018, and went on to earn over $75,000 in commissions in the last ~2.5 years
He breaks down several SEO strategies he used to achieve that result, many of which you can apply to other affiliate programs and/or niches.
Note also how Khris’ article naturally includes affiliate links to several other products… nicely done.

Overwhelmed? The Psychology Of MoneyFast and SmallDisaster Girl just made $473,000Momentos, Finance Report, Etc.How to Ask Useful QuestionsThis article by Josh Kaufman is the most important thing you’ll read today.
Especially if you’re struggling with making money online and need to ask for help.
I get emails every day asking things like:
“Hello! [Insert life story.] What should I do?”
“I’m thinking about [action]. What do you think?”
Those are bad questions, and I’ve given up responding to them. (Though now I might start responding with just a link to Josh’s article
)
Josh provides templates and guidelines for asking better questions, based on the 5 different types of information you might be seeking.
Ask better questions, get better answers.
1 Person Million Dollar BusinessesNoah Kagan profiles three of them in this 12-minute video and pulls out some nice takeaways from each.
The three businesses:
AmmoniaSport – $80k per month smelling salts ecom, built and run by a 25-year-oldSociety Service – $200k/month high-end escort service in the NetherlandsLingoci – $120k/month online language platform, started with SwedishAs Noah says in the video, the people building and running these businesses aren’t much different to you. They don’t have anything you don’t have or can’t learn
Without spending a dollar, Alex Garcia apparently built his Twitter following From 1k to 40k in 50 days, and his email list from 0 to 7k in 2 months.
He shares his 9 secrets for building an audience fast, including…
Free Virtual Hackathon
Seth Godin says, “The Beatles did not invent teenagers. They merely decided to lead them.”
You’re no different. Find an audience that already exists. Decide to lead them.
You do this by becoming a reliable source of value.
ProductHunt has this going on until June 18th.
The theme is Green Earth, so the goal is to quickly build and launch a product or service that helps the environment.
Maker Festival is open to people of all trades (developers, designers, writers, you name it) from all around the world.
They’ve got some good prizes up for grabs as well, see here
Reddit is notoriously tough on self-promoters, with many mods deleting posts that hint at self promotion.

Three favorites:
Turning a Small App Into a $20,000/mo BusinessTurned a joke into a business.. and I just made my first sale! Created an SEO tool to solve a problem I was having – would love some feedbackBusy? Overwhelmed? The following two articles might help
The first, by Scott Young, shows how biased we are towards adding new tasks and responsibilities, even though subtracting them can often bring better results. That article also provides a handy alternative to saying “no” to everything.
Second is an old blog post from Tim Ferriss that I think about often: The Art of Letting Bad Things Happen
Key quote from that…
The Psychology Of MoneyIt’s not that I go out of my way to irritate people — not at all — but I recognize one critical fact: oftentimes, in order to do the big things, you have to let the small bad things happen. This is a skill we want to cultivate.
I’ve linked before to this great article that became an excellent book.
The author, Morgan Housel, was recently a guest on the We Study Billionaires podcast
and covered many of the same points there.
Some nice inspiration in this list of “people quickly accomplishing ambitious things together.”
Complement with this list of “impressive things accomplished by small teams.”
One from the latter is BuiltWith.com, which apparently pulls in $14 million a year with a single employee
Disaster Girl is a famous meme (see it here), showing a 5-year-old Zoë Roth smiling knowingly in front of a house fire in 2005
The BBC reports that Zoë – now a college senior – recently auctioned off the original copy of the meme as an NFT for $473,000 worth of crypto.
BuzzFeed has a short video of Zoë telling her story, and a whole playlist called I Accidentally Became A Meme featuring Success Kid, Overly Attached Girlfriend, and a bunch of other famous meme stars.

Creative Link BuildingSome great examples of creative link building in this Authority Hacker video
If I was to go back to freelancing, I’d do something like that, creating link-magnet content for clients, similar to the non-spammy examples shown in the video.
If you’ve got some dev skills, you could make calculator tools for sites like you see in the Healthy Eater example, package that with an outreach service to help them build links.
(Here’s a good primer on link building if you’re new to the concept.)
42 ways to earn your first $1 onlineBlake Emal has the list on Twitter, might give you some ideas
One from Blake:
Sell access to a Google Sheet or Airtable
Create a database of valuable info, creators, or tools. Organize the info neatly in a spreadsheet. Sell access to view and duplicate the sheet.
An example of this is Community List, an Airtable list of “hundreds of communities to promote your product.”
The creator reports that he has earned $2000 with that one week after launch.
Up to 75% off SiteGround hostingSiteGround is one of only three web hosts I regularly recommend, and my host of choice if I were starting over from scratch.
Right now they’re running a seasonal sale with heavy discounts, from 63% to 75% off
And they haven’t been for a while.
Here’s a good write-up of how things have gotten worse over the years for people selling products on Amazon.
The article is from 2018, but as you can see when you visit the Amazon seller forums today, many of the top posts speak to sellers leaving or expressing frustration
For his new book (Amazon Unbound) Brad Stone reached out to several Amazon sellers “who had previously lobbied for Amazon or spoken out on its behalf.” He found that many of them had since changed their tune.
A telling quote from one such seller who has seen his business increasingly struggle on Amazon…
HubSpot Academy (Free Courses)“I’m all for competition, but I did not start my business and go sell on Amazon so that I could eventually become fertilizer for Amazon’s growth as I am buried and destroyed. It’s apparent this is happening to a lot of sellers, and I don’t believe it’s right. What Amazon does is analogous to being invited over for Thanksgiving dinner, then finding out as you sit down to dine that you’re the turkey.”
I’ve been browsing the free courses offered by HubSpot and they look good, nice and concise. Some even offer certifications
Courses that caught my eye:
BloggingEmail Marketing (with certification)Facebook MarketingGoogle AdsHow To Make A Web AppInstagram AdvertisingSEO (with certification)WordPress TrainingYouTube MarketingDon’t expect much depth from any of those courses, as most are 3 hours or less. But you can use them to get a feel for different topics and specializations, see what resonates with you before diving deeper.
$50K/month one-man design serviceThat’s DesignJoy by Brett Williams.
I’ve mentioned it here a couple of times before. It was at $15k/month about a year ago. Then $25k/month back in January.
The latest update is that Brett has hit $50-60K in monthly revenue with less than $200 in monthly expenses and working 50-60 hours per week
Marie Dollé argues that in today’s world, “weirdness is no longer feared but leveraged.”
She gives many examples of weird trends and businesses that have found success, such as:
Dirty Rotten Flowers: sold 300-400 rotten bouquets for Valentine’s DayScam Rappers: getting noticed with lyrics about credit card fraudBranded Fruit: printing logos on fruit and veg, $120K/year in revenueMaskalike: $30 facemasks that look like your faceMarie offers a theory as to why now is a great time to let your freak flag fly…
This is where we are in 2021. With the exterior constrained and pallid, interior eccentricity is gaining ground. As cyberpunk-infused essayist Douglas Rushkoff reminded us, in a world run by algorithms, weirdness is our best weapon: the inner punks have taken over, and more importantly, they’re taking revenge on the algorithms.
“In a middle school where social media likes are the metric of popularity, the spoilsport is the kid who deletes the app or chooses not to own a phone at all. The spoilsport takes actions that make no sense within the logic of the game. Such abnormal behavior challenges convention, breaks the conspiracy of conformity, and stumps the algorithms. A.I.s and other enforcers of social control can’t follow what they can’t categorize. Weirdness is power, dissolving false binaries and celebrating the full spectrum of possibilities. Eccentricity opens the gray area where mutations develop and innovations are born.”
Here’s a weird website that actually ties in with the creative link building mentioned earlier: aaa.aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.com
The site is a URL lengthener service, as opposed to URL shortener services like bitly. It’s just a joke, but according to Ahrefs it has picked up 1600+ backlinks in just a few weeks
What weird or contrarian ideas could you take a swing at?
See where you can travel toIf you need to scratch that digital nomad itch, Airheart Explorer is a handy tool that shows where you can travel and what’s required (quarantine, vaccine, etc).
