How to Ask Useful Questions1 Person Million Dollar BusinessesBe like the BeatlesFree Virtual HackathonHow to self promote on RedditBusy? Overwhelmed? The Psychology Of  MoneyFast and SmallDisaster Girl just made $473,000Momentos, Finance Report, Etc.How to Ask Useful Questions

This article by Josh Kaufman is the most important thing you’ll read today.

Especially if you’re struggling with making money online and need to ask for help.

I get emails every day asking things like:

“Hello! [Insert life story.] What should I do?”
“I’m thinking about [action]. What do you think?”

Those are bad questions, and I’ve given up responding to them. (Though now I might start responding with just a link to Josh’s article 😜 )

Josh provides templates and guidelines for asking better questions, based on the 5 different types of information you might be seeking.

Ask better questions, get better answers.

1 Person Million Dollar Businesses

Noah Kagan profiles three of them in this 12-minute video and pulls out some nice takeaways from each.

The three businesses:

AmmoniaSport – $80k per month smelling salts ecom, built and run by a 25-year-oldSociety Service – $200k/month high-end escort service in the NetherlandsLingoci – $120k/month online language platform, started with Swedish

As Noah says in the video, the people building and running these businesses aren’t much different to you. They don’t have anything you don’t have or can’t learn 😎

Be like the Beatles

Without spending a dollar, Alex Garcia apparently built his Twitter following From 1k to 40k in 50 days, and his email list from 0 to 7k in 2 months.

He shares his 9 secrets for building an audience fast, including…

Seth Godin says, “The Beatles did not invent teenagers. They merely decided to lead them.”

You’re no different. Find an audience that already exists. Decide to lead them.

You do this by becoming a reliable source of value.

Free Virtual Hackathon

ProductHunt has this going on until June 18th.

🌎 The theme is Green Earth, so the goal is to quickly build and launch a product or service that helps the environment.

Maker Festival is open to people of all trades (developers, designers, writers, you name it) from all around the world.

They’ve got some good prizes up for grabs as well, see here 🎁

How to self promote on Reddit

Reddit is notoriously tough on self-promoters, with many mods deleting posts that hint at self promotion.

YesPromo put together a list of 100+ examples of successful self promotion posts on Reddit, so you can see what works and try to emulate.

Click here to jump straight to the list 👈

Three favorites:

Turning a Small App Into a $20,000/mo BusinessTurned a joke into a business.. and I just made my first sale! Created an SEO tool to solve a problem I was having – would love some feedbackBusy? Overwhelmed?

The following two articles might help 👇

The first, by Scott Young, shows how biased we are towards adding new tasks and responsibilities, even though subtracting them can often bring better results. That article also provides a handy alternative to saying “no” to everything.

Second is an old blog post from Tim Ferriss that I think about often: The Art of Letting Bad Things Happen

Key quote from that…

It’s not that I go out of my way to irritate people — not at all — but I recognize one critical fact: oftentimes, in order to do the big things, you have to let the small bad things happen. This is a skill we want to cultivate.

The Psychology Of  Money

I’ve linked before to this great article that became an excellent book.

The author, Morgan Housel, was recently a guest on the We Study Billionaires podcast 🎙 and covered many of the same points there.

Fast and Small

Some nice inspiration in this list of “people quickly accomplishing ambitious things together.”

Complement with this list of “impressive things accomplished by small teams.”

One from the latter is BuiltWith.com, which apparently pulls in $14 million a year with a single employee 💰

Disaster Girl just made $473,000

Disaster Girl is a famous meme (see it here), showing a 5-year-old Zoë Roth smiling knowingly in front of a house fire in 2005 🔥

The BBC reports that Zoë – now a college senior – recently auctioned off the original copy of the meme as an NFT for $473,000 worth of crypto.

BuzzFeed has a short video of Zoë telling her story, and a whole playlist called I Accidentally Became A Meme featuring Success Kid, Overly Attached Girlfriend, and a bunch of other famous meme stars.

Momentos, Finance Report, Etc.

My latest Momentos are here.

Check out my May finance report to see how much my business earned and spent last month (hint: new high for income) 🥳

And here’s an update on our progress collecting student reviews for online business courses.

Creative Link Building

Some great examples of creative link building in this Authority Hacker video 📹

If I was to go back to freelancing, I’d do something like that, creating link-magnet content for clients, similar to the non-spammy examples shown in the video.

If you’ve got some dev skills, you could make calculator tools for sites like you see in the Healthy Eater example, package that with an outreach service to help them build links.

(Here’s a good primer on link building if you’re new to the concept.)

42 ways to earn your first $1 online

Blake Emal has the list on Twitter, might give you some ideas 💡

One from Blake:

Sell access to a Google Sheet or Airtable

Create a database of valuable info, creators, or tools. Organize the info neatly in a spreadsheet. Sell access to view and duplicate the sheet.

An example of this is Community List, an Airtable list of “hundreds of communities to promote your product.”

The creator reports that he has earned $2000 with that one week after launch.

Up to 75% off SiteGround hosting

SiteGround is one of only three web hosts I regularly recommend, and my host of choice if I were starting over from scratch.

Right now they’re running a seasonal sale with heavy discounts, from 63% to 75% off 😍

More info hereSee all deals this weekAmazon sellers ain’t happy

And they haven’t been for a while.

Here’s a good write-up of how things have gotten worse over the years for people selling products on Amazon.

The article is from 2018, but as you can see when you visit the Amazon seller forums today, many of the top posts speak to sellers leaving or expressing frustration 🤬

For his new book (Amazon Unbound) Brad Stone reached out to several Amazon sellers “who had previously lobbied for Amazon or spoken out on its behalf.” He found that many of them had since changed their tune.

A telling quote from one such seller who has seen his business increasingly struggle on Amazon…

“I’m all for competition, but I did not start my business and go sell on Amazon so that I could eventually become fertilizer for Amazon’s growth as I am buried and destroyed. It’s apparent this is happening to a lot of sellers, and I don’t believe it’s right. What Amazon does is analogous to being invited over for Thanksgiving dinner, then finding out as you sit down to dine that you’re the turkey.”

HubSpot Academy (Free Courses)

I’ve been browsing the free courses offered by HubSpot and they look good, nice and concise. Some even offer certifications 🎓

Courses that caught my eye:

BloggingEmail Marketing (with certification)Facebook MarketingGoogle AdsHow To Make A Web AppInstagram AdvertisingSEO (with certification)WordPress TrainingYouTube Marketing

Don’t expect much depth from any of those courses, as most are 3 hours or less. But you can use them to get a feel for different topics and specializations, see what resonates with you before diving deeper.

$50K/month one-man design service

That’s DesignJoy by Brett Williams.

I’ve mentioned it here a couple of times before. It was at $15k/month about a year ago. Then $25k/month back in January.

The latest update is that Brett has hit $50-60K in monthly revenue with less than $200 in monthly expenses and working 50-60 hours per week 💪

Weird Goes Mainstream

Marie Dollé argues that in today’s world, “weirdness is no longer feared but leveraged.”

She gives many examples of weird trends and businesses that have found success, such as:

Dirty Rotten Flowers: sold 300-400 rotten bouquets for Valentine’s DayScam Rappers: getting noticed with lyrics about credit card fraudBranded Fruit: printing logos on fruit and veg, $120K/year in revenueMaskalike: $30 facemasks that look like your face

Marie offers a theory as to why now is a great time to let your freak flag fly…

This is where we are in 2021. With the exterior constrained and pallid, interior eccentricity is gaining ground. As cyberpunk-infused essayist Douglas Rushkoff reminded us, in a world run by algorithms, weirdness is our best weapon: the inner punks have taken over, and more importantly, they’re taking revenge on the algorithms.

“In a middle school where social media likes are the metric of popularity, the spoilsport is the kid who deletes the app or chooses not to own a phone at all. The spoilsport takes actions that make no sense within the logic of the game. Such abnormal behavior challenges convention, breaks the conspiracy of conformity, and stumps the algorithms. A.I.s and other enforcers of social control can’t follow what they can’t categorize. Weirdness is power, dissolving false binaries and celebrating the full spectrum of possibilities. Eccentricity opens the gray area where mutations develop and innovations are born.”

Here’s a weird website that actually ties in with the creative link building mentioned earlier: aaa.aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.com

The site is a URL lengthener service, as opposed to URL shortener services like bitly. It’s just a joke, but according to Ahrefs it has picked up 1600+ backlinks in just a few weeks 🤯

What weird or contrarian ideas could you take a swing at?

See where you can travel to

If you need to scratch that digital nomad itch, Airheart Explorer is a handy tool that shows where you can travel and what’s required (quarantine, vaccine, etc).

Related: United Airlines is running a sweepstakes for a year of free flights 🛩

Capterra for online business courses

That’s what we’re aiming to build at eBiz Facts.

(Capterra is a site with 1.5 million validated user reviews of software products.)

I wrote more about the idea and our approach here 👈

The secret to building a $39k/mo businessYouTube to pay $100M for short videosThe Most Interesting Marketer in the WorldFree review of your Amazon listingRoast My Landing PageHow to find the next big thingDon’t buy stuff, buy cash flowThe Einstein of Computer ScienceComplete SEO Course for Beginners (Free)MomentosThe secret to building a $39k/mo business

Jordan O’Connor launched an automation tool for Poshmark about 5 years ago.

Now it’s pulling $39,000 in monthly revenue 💰

He recently revealed the secret to his success:

if I just told you about my product’s revenue growth – it would be a wild story. Starting from “nothing” and growing it to where it is now. What a dream.

What’s not told, is the years and years of learning valuable skills required to pull something like that off.

Any real success takes a lot of time, and chances are, if you’re not what you consider “successful” you may not have been doing it long enough.

YouTube to pay $100M for short videos

Announced last week.

YouTube Shorts is YouTube’s version of TikTok. Videos are 60 seconds or less. See examples on this page.

YouTube pouring millions into this is similar to Snapchat pouring millions into their Spotlight feature last year. As reported in the newsletter a few months back, some people were earning big money via Spotlight, including one woman banking $500,000 for a video of her sister deep frying a turkey 🍗

So if you’re looking for a way to break into YouTube, Shorts might be the ticket.

The Most Interesting Marketer in the World

According to one YouTube video, his name is Gabe Whaley, and he’s the founder of MSCHF.

Some of the viral products MSCHF has come out with:

Jesus Shoes, with holy water in the soleCussCollar, translates dog barks into cursesFinger on the App, $20k prize to touch a screen for 70 hours

Back in 2019, Gabe discussed his creative process on the Prehype podcast. Worth a listen 🎧 to get your own marketing juices flowing.

Brainiac also has a good case study on MSCHF (use promo code EBIZFACTS for a 25% discount).

Free review of your Amazon listing

If you’re selling a product on Amazon, Amazing at Home offers a free review of your listing to help boost sales.

Heard about it on this episode of the eCom Exits podcast 🎙

The host of that podcast – Nate Ginsburg – built and sold a $1 million Amazon business, and shared his story here.

Roast My Landing Page

Amazing at Home uses the free offer mentioned above as a lead gen for their $99/month Mastermind Membership.

Roast My Landing Page skips the free offer and charges £149 ($210) for a 20-minute video analysis of your SaaS landing page.

Oliver Meakings, the guy behind RMLP, writes that he’s been offering that productized service for a year, and it’s gone pretty well:

I generated about £20,000 in roast revenue, and another £50,000 of freelance marketing work from clients who discovered me through being roasted.

That works out to $99,000 total revenue, and he reports about $14,000 in expenses 🤑

Oliver’s write-up is worth a read if you’re considering offering a productized service – pay special attention to how much he tweaked his offer and marketing to find what worked best – or if you want to improve your landing page conversions.

How to find the next big thing

Steph Smith from Trends (reviewed here) breaks down her clever research process in this thread 👈

An example of an opportunity she spotted recently:

Hard kombucha.

In grocery stores in California, there’s an entire section for it. In Florida, I can’t find it if I try. That won’t be the case in 5 years.

And for the rest of the world? There’s almost no search volume. So much room to capitalize.

If you’re already focused on a niche or industry, you could use Steph’s research process to spot emerging trends and/or find topics to cover on your blog/podcast/whatever.

Don’t buy stuff, buy cash flow

This article is a good reminder to think twice before spending money on stuff that generates ongoing expenses, like a car or a house 🏡

Better to spend money on stuff that generates cash flow, like an established business or a nice rental property.

When you purchase future cash flow you become wealthy. When you purchase future debt, you become poor.

Of course it’s not always as simple as that, but you get the idea.

The Einstein of Computer Science

A recent episode of Cautionary Tales told the story of Claude Shannon, the so-called Einstein of computer science and the inventor of the world’s first wearable computer, which he used to cheat at roulette in a Vegas casino back in 1961.

The episode describes how Shannon never stayed focused on one thing for long. Maybe he would have made more significant contributions to the world if he had been less scattered… or maybe his lack of focus is what made him so brilliant in the first place 🤔

Indeed, there is evidence that having serious hobbies is correlated with greater career success…

Compared to other scientists, Nobel laureates are at least twenty-two times more likely to partake as an amateur actor, dancer, magician, or other type of performer.

Nationally recognized scientists are much more likely than other scientists to be musicians, sculptors, painters, printmakers, woodworkers, mechanics, electronics tinkerers, glassblowers, poets, or writers, of both fiction and nonfiction. (source)

It’s easy to believe the Elon Musk narrative that  you need to work 80 hours per week to change the world. But there’s a good argument to be made that you’ll deliver better results with less work and more “distraction.”

Just be sure to choose your distractions wisely 😉

Complete SEO Course for Beginners (Free)

Ahrefs just dropped a free 2-hour SEO course on YouTube 😍

You’ll need access to the premium Ahrefs tool to make the most of it. They offer a 7-day trial for $7.

Go through that course and play around with the tool for a week, and I bet you could provide valuable insights to many a business with an online presence. At that point, it wouldn’t be too hard to start charging $20+/hour for your expertise.

Follow this 3-step process to find your first clients.

$1500 for 30 days of nappingThe Far Side of ComplexityDeal of the Week: 25% off BrainiacThe most liked online post everHow 7-Figure Newsletters Make MoneyLearn digital marketing via Acadium$450,000 freelance writing on FiverrLow-rated apps people pay forHow would you grow this?$1500 for 30 days of napping

Quite literally a dream job that Eachnight are hiring for right now.

You basically need to run napping experiments 😴 every day for 30 days and report your findings. They’re only hiring five people but you can apply from anywhere in the world.

(Added this to our list of weird ways to make money online.)

The Far Side of Complexity

This 20-minute video by James Jani serves as a sober overview of Bitcoin. Check it out for a simple explanation of how the technology works, and how a single coin went from being worth $0 in 2009 to about $50,000 today 📈

His explainer video on the stock market and investing is also worth a look.

As you’ll see from those videos, James does a great job of breaking down complex topics so they’re easy to understand. Someone who does the same in written form is Tim Urban of Wait But Why.

With the world growing increasingly complex, we need more people like James and Tim.

Is there a complex topic you know a lot about, or could learn a lot about? And then explain that topic in simple terms to other people?

James and Tim have shown that you can make a good living doing just that 💰

James earns an estimated $7756 in ad revenue from each video he puts out, an additional $1600/month via Patreon, and likely much more from sponsorships. And it looks like Tim is earning about $10,000 a month via Patreon alone.

Deal of the Week: 25% off Brainiac

Brainiac is the cheat code marketing professionals have been waiting for: a science-backed online database of 150 cognitive biases, principles and models that influence your customer’s decisions.

Use it to sell more, sell smarter, and sell faster.

I bought it at full price myself, but you can use promo code EBIZFACTS at checkout to get a 25% discount 😎

Click through for a 1-minute video demo of Brainiac and see why it was voted #1 Product of the Week on Product Hunt.

All deals this weekDepositphotos: last week’s popular lifetime deal is still availableThe most liked online post ever

It’s this photo of an egg on Instagram, with over 55 million likes 👍

Heard about it via a case study in Brainiac, where it’s included as an example of the Von Restorff Effect, which basically says that things that go against the norm tend to attract lots of attention.

Mimicry comes at a cost. What might seem like a safe choice in a boardroom will most likely be a waste of money. Advertising that feels safe or familiar is actually quite risky.

Everyone else on Instagram was posting flashy lifestyle photos. That was the zig. A simple photo of an egg was the zag, something completely different and therefore remarkable 😲

Take a look at what your competitors are doing. Could you do something completely different that would help you stand out?

(More info about the egg on Wikipedia)

How 7-Figure Newsletters Make Money

Ethan Brooks breaks it down here 👈

He notes that there are 3 main ways to make money from a newsletter:

1. Free subscriptions (monetized via ads)
2. Low-price subscriptions
3. High-price subscriptions

Alone, each can be a multi-million dollar biz. But together they’re better…

Via that thread I found this list of the highest earning Substack newsletters, including one about China ($648k+ per year) and another about the climate crisis ($216k+ per year). And here’s a free newsletter for young professional women that earned $1.1 million last September 🤑

Learn digital marketing via Acadium

Acadium is a platform that connects mentors and apprentices, especially in the digital marketing space.

As an apprentice you don’t get paid, but it sounds like a great way to gain real-world digital marketing experience and set yourself up for well-paid work down the road.

They also have a bunch of free courses for learning digital marketing.

I heard about Acadium via an interview with the founder on Mixergy 🎙

$450,000 freelance writing on Fiverr

That’s Carrie French, a former music teacher who started on Fiverr back in 2013.

According to Forbes:

French became a full-time Fiverr seller, offering gigs such as writing product descriptions and SEO website content as well as offering her own copywriting ecourse. To date, she’s earned nearly $450,000 and typically works two to three hours a day, seven days a week.

See Carrie’s Fiverr profile here. Side Hustle School also featured her in an episode 🎧

Low-rated apps people pay for

If you’re looking to build a money-making app, check out this website for ideas.

How would you grow this?

Here at eBiz Facts we’re transitioning from in-depth reviews of online business courses (like this), to more of a user-generated review model (like this).

Any course that promises to help you make money online… we’re aiming to collect, validate and display reviews from real students.

Ultimately that should help our readers find the legit courses 😇 and avoid the crappy ones 😈

Our goal is to publish 200+ student reviews in the next 2 months, and the niche we’re starting with is Amazon FBA.

There are many smart entrepreneurial people on this mailing list, so I’m wondering if you might have some creative ideas for generating user reviews?

That’s the estimated annual revenue from David Perell’s course, Write of Passage ✍

Actually, it’s likely much higher than that. David shared in December that they have 600-700 students a year, charging $3000 to $5000 per student.

One key to David’s success has been building an audience on Twitter.

From his article entitled Audience-First Products:

I launched the course with a built-in audience of 10,000 email subscribers and 20,000 Twitter followers. Since I had organic reach, I didn’t have to pay for marketing.

He launched the course in April 2019 and the first two cohorts pulled in more than $200,000 profit 💰

(I came across this framework while listening to Lenny Rachitsky on the Creator Lab podcast, a new addition to my list of best business podcasts.)

$1500/month for studying full-time

Computer engineering student James Scholz has a YouTube channel where he live streams his marathon study sessions, with occasional appearances by his cat 🙀

Recently he put out a video about how he studied 12 hours a day for a year (excluding weekends).

His channel now has 279k subscribers and recently he’s been getting up to 600,000 views per video 📈

Once calculator estimates that he earns an average of $138 in ad revenue from each video, which works out to $690 per month. Looks like he’s also earning at least that much every month via Patreon. And he has Amazon affiliate links in each video description.

I’d estimate that he’s earning minimum $1500/month from everything, though of course it’s taken him a year of live streaming to get to that point.

A few other live streamers profiled in this article:

$20k/mo affiliate site in a weird niche

The specific site is undisclosed in this interview, but apparently the niche was heat press machines.

As in, machines that print designs on t-shirts 👕

Dan and Naomi Morris started the site in 2015 and built it up to $5k/month within about 18 months. They sold it last year for six figures, by which point it was pulling in almost $20k a month.

What I like most about their story is that they had no knowledge of the niche before getting into it, but through researching and creating content consistently they became an authority on the topic.

That’s Ness Labs, “a community of curious humans who want to achieve more without sacrificing their mental health.”

Anne-Laure Le Cunff started it in March 2020 and it’s now up to $9,272 in monthly recurring revenue, and has earned $109k total so far 🤑

The community grew out of a free weekly newsletter Anne-Laure started in 2019.

In a recent AMA she explained how she’d grow the business if she had to start over from scratch:

Start by building an audience, which I did on Twitter and with my newsletter. Once you reach a decent number of followers/subscribers, launch a community so they can connect together (the exact number of followers/subscribers you need depends on the type of community you want to build, for example a small mastermind of 10 community members may only require a newsletter with 100-200 subscribers)

Being poor is an advantage

I highlighted almost every one of Kevin Kelly’s 99 bits of unsolicited advice.

Sharing two with you:

Money is overrated. Truly new things rarely need an abundance of money. If that was so, billionaires would have a monopoly on inventing new things, and they don’t. Instead almost all breakthroughs are made by those who lack money, because they are forced to rely on their passion, persistence and ingenuity to figure out new ways. Being poor is an advantage in innovation.

This is the best time ever to make something. None of the greatest, coolest creations 20 years from now have been invented yet. You are not late.

Let’s get to work 🛠
