$0 to $20K in 2 months (tactics that worked)

David BresslerDavid BresslerFounder of excelformulabot.com $20,000 in 2 months
Published November 21, 2022 by Niall Doherty

David Bressler writes how he built excelformulabot.com from nothing to $20,000 in revenue in a couple of months while working a full-time job.

The site lets you write text instructions for Excel and transforms them into formulas. Users can try it for free and then it’s $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year.

David lists 6 growth hacks that have worked well for him, four of them related to social media. Combined they helped him generate 671,000 visits to his site last month 🚀

Number one on his list…

Take advantage of the fact that social influencers LOVE promoting free tools to their audience. TikTok and Twitter are full of “productivity hackers” that freely promote websites that can help people be more productive.

My website has been shared by several hundred influencers/big time personalities, oftentimes included in posts like “It should be illegal to know about these websites” or “Top 5 websites that you can’t believe are free”.

If you have a free version of your product or service, the same approach might work well for you.

$50,105 In Sales Within 2 Weeks

Danny PostmaDanny PostmaSerial Entrepreneur $1,000,000+ from sale of Headlime
Published November 17, 2022 by Niall Doherty

Danny Postma reports that he earned $50,000+ in two weeks with ProfilePicture.AI

That site lets you upload a few images of yourself – or your pet – and then generates a bunch of new profile photos via artificial intelligence.

IMO the most interesting part of Danny’s story is that he’s launched 10 other products in the last 18 months alone 😵‍💫

Some of them have done pretty well – eg. Landingfolio.com earns 4 figures a month – while others have been big flops.

Danny considers ProfilePicture.AI his biggest win in 11 tries, but it’s not his first big win. He previously built an AI writing tool called Headlime which sold for 7 figures after 8 months 🤯

I believe Danny is only 28 years old, but he’d been a designer since the age of 16, launched a handful of projects prior to Headlime, and had built up a solid base income as a freelancer.

So don’t be fooled: every overnight success takes a ton of work.

Danny’s mantra seems to be…

Build fast, kill faster.

In other words, don’t get too attached to any one project. Launch lots of things, see what works, kill the losers and double down on the winners.

As the name suggests, the course sells itself as being mainly for beginners.

As stated on the sales page…

A proven method to help new writers fast-track their way to success with freelance writing – no experience needed.

Having seen inside the course, I found this description accurate: nearly all of the content provided indeed seems to be intended for people new to earning a living from their writing.

70+ ways how to make money online (including easy options)Does Elna Cain have a good reputation?

Yes.

During my research I found far more praise than criticism for this training and its creator.

It seems Elna created the course years ago, as I’ve seen some pretty old testimonials. She has also built up a decent following and seems to have a significant number of successful students.

You can see many legit success stories from Elna’s students on the course sales page.

Are Write Your Way to Your First $1k students getting results?

I found a fair amount of Write Your Way to Your First $1k students reporting impressive results.

For example…

write your way to your first 1k review student resultswrite your way to your first 1k review student testimonialswrite your way to your first 1k review student reviews

Write Your Way to Your First $1k has many more testimonials like the above. Better yet, most of them mention specifics such as the amount of money earned from following the training.

The only thing that gives me pause is that many of the testimonials for the training seem to be quite old. This made me wonder if newer students were still getting good results from the training 😕

Having seen inside the training however, I’m happy that the material is still solid and effective. If you put in the work and follow what Elna teaches, you can expect to see positive results.

How much does Write Your Way to Your First $1k cost?

For access to the Write Your Way to Your First $1k training, there are two payment options:

The latter adds up to a total price of $225.

You get lifetime access with either option.

Keep in mind that you may want to put extra money aside for hosting and a domain name for your website. (Within the training, Elna recommends setting up your own writer website.)

Elna has kindly provided readers of this review with a 10% discount 🥳

Refund Policy

The sales page for Write Your Way to Your First $1k specifies a 30-day money-back guarantee…

I can’t guarantee you success or income; I can just teach you what I’ve learned along the way. But I stand behind this course with a full 30-day, 100% money-back guarantee.

I haven’t seen anyone reporting issues getting a refund on their purchase, so you can rest easy with this guarantee.

How is Write Your Way to Your First $1k structured?

Here’s what the training looks like once you’re logged in…

write your way to your first 1k review training page

The core training is broken up into 13 modules and almost 100 lessons! Nearly all of the lessons are in text format, but there’s an occasional video lesson thrown in.

I found Write Your Way to $1k incredibly comprehensive for beginner training. It doesn’t seem to rush anything, taking the time to teach you the basics first, and then move on to things like clients and pitching.

There are also plenty of bonuses. Some lessons have downloadable checklists and templates included, and there are also extra materials such as:

The Pitching BundleLevel Up Your Freelance Writing Biz eBookGet on the Right Track BundleProfitable Niche WorkbookBook Clients in 30 Days ChallengePersonalized Pitch Review

In addition to these, you get access to a private Facebook group. It’s not the most active community I’ve seen, but all questions seem to get answered quickly, either from Elna herself or other students.

Overall, I find the community to be a nice value-add to the course.

Bootstrapping a SaaS from $0 to $10K MRR in a year

Julien NahumJulien NahumFounder of NotionForms $10,000 per month
Published November 14, 2022 by Niall Doherty

Julien Nahum writes about his journey building NotionForms from zero to $10,000 monthly recurring revenue in one year 🚀

Notion is a popular productivity tool – with apparently more than 30 million users – and Julien’s software allows you to “create beautiful forms to fill your Notion tables.”

What impresses me most about Julien’s success is that he started with barely any audience and seemingly did a lot of things “wrong” when starting out…

Many people online explain that the hardest part is always to sell the product. They recommend you start selling it (via landing pages for instance), even before you build it. I agree with this, but unfortunately, I’m an engineer. I love to build stuff and therefore started by building the product.

He spent a few days coding up his MVP, then announced it to almost nobody on Twitter…

As soon as I had something visual to show, I tweeted about it. This tweet was retweeted 4 times and got 11 likes. I had around 70 (inactive) followers back then, so this was huge for me!

Julien had more success getting the word out via Notion-related subreddits and Facebook groups.

Which surprised me, since those places often balk at any kind of self promotion 😡

I think the key for Julien was that he offered NotionForms for free in the beginning. So while promoting it he came across as simply sharing a useful free tool he created.

Anyway, those efforts, combined with some networking on Twitter and someone submitting the project to ProductHunt, landed Julien his first 100 free users in only six days.

Then he got to work adding more features and building a premium version.

Julien goes into lots more detail here about his journey. Highlights include:

How his freemium viral loop worksGetting influencers to promote his softwareAdding a second paid planDealing with copycatsRelaunching on ProductHuntReceiving an acquisition offer of $350,000 😱

Closing words from Julien…

With my old Macbook in France, I created a product used by 330k people, all around the world! SaaS is beautiful.

Hey, I’m Niall Doherty.

I quit my last 9-to-5 job back in 2010.

Since then, I’ve earned my living online in various ways. Last year (2021) I earned $208,536 from my laptop.

I’m on a mission to accurately rate and review all the best online business courses. My team and I are spending many hours investigating these courses and getting feedback from real students.

All that to say: we know a thing or two about such courses and making money online.

The Best Freelance Course?

We’re on a mission to find the best freelance course, based on our own extensive research plus feedback from real students.

Creative Class is a solid course but not quite the best we’ve seen…

How does Creative Class help you make money?

Creative Class aims to help you become a PRO freelancer.

The official word…

The goal of Creative Class is to help you become a PRO freelancer. Why? Because you won’t magically start enjoying your freelance work unless you make some changes and adopt the PRO freelancer mentality to doing business.

According to CC, a PRO freelancer is somebody who works on their own terms while still providing the best possible return on investment for their clients.

It is also implied that PRO freelancers line up lots of client projects in advance and “consistently earn 5 figures per month.”

As a freelancer you would be running your own business. Clients would hire you to work on various projects.

Learn more about freelancingWho is Creative Class for?

Creative Class sells itself primarily as a course for novice creative freelancers.

As stated on the sales page…

Who is this program for? Freelancers, obviously, but more specifically, people who use their creative skills to attract and serve clients online. Think web designers, developers, software creators, writers and more. To clarify further: New freelancers or freelancers who’ve been at it for a few years but haven’t yet seen the results they want.

Having seen inside the course, I tend to agree: Creative Class is an ideal course for new to intermediate freelancers who want to get better at managing their work and their clients.

Unfortunately, you cannot join the course at any time.

As they informed me via email…

The course is only open for enrollment ~4 weeks of the year: two weeks in Spring/Summer; two weeks in Autumn/Winter.

70+ ways how to make money online (including easy options)Do the course creators have a good reputation?

Elise Dopson and Michael Keenan have been the owners of Creative Class since 2022.

They don’t seem to have a huge audience yet, but I think that’s only a matter of time.

I’ve watched interviews with both of them. They seem like genuine people who have worked hard to achieve success in the world of freelance writing.

Now they’re sharing what they’ve learned via the Peak Freelance website. Having acquired the training from Paul Jarvis and Kaleigh Moore in 2022, this now includes Creative Class.

Note that all the lessons within Creative Class are still taught by Paul Jarvis, who also seems to have a solid reputation online.

Below is an interview with Elise and Michael so you can get a feel for their style…

And here’s an interview with Paul Jarvis…

Are Creative Class students getting results?

It’s hard to tell.

I did find several testimonials on the Creative Class website.

For example…

creative class review student results

A handful of those testimonials are impressive – such as Michael Suen increasing his income by 250% in eight months – while others simply offer generic praise rather than speaking to specific results achieved.

I also failed to find any testimonials for the training elsewhere on the web.

Apparently 2400+ students have gone through Creative Class over the years. Given that, I would have expected to see far more success stories during my research.

My guess is that the CC website simply hasn’t been updated in recent years to feature new testimonials from students.

How much does Creative Class cost?

Lifetime access for Creative Class will cost you $269.

I didn’t find any info on additional costs required to fully implement the training, which leads me to believe that you don’t need to put any extra money aside.

Creative Class Discount?

I did find a discount for Creative Class via the Peak Freelance blog.

Enter the coupon code PEAKFREELANCE at checkout and you’ll get a $30 discount.

My guess is that if Elise and Michael offer another discount or promotion, they’ll do so on some of the social media accounts for Peak Freelance.

Refund Policy

It’s hard to find, but there is indeed a refund policy for Creative Class.

They will basically give you a refund for the training if you apply for one within 30 days.

More info on this page.

How is Creative Class structured?

Here’s what the training looks like once you log in and open one of the lessons…

creative class review training page

CC’s core training is split into four modules:

MindsetManagementConnectionProcess

Each module consists mainly of video lessons. The core training is quite short. There are only 15 video lessons that have a total length of ~2.5 hours.

Each lesson seems to last no longer than 15 minutes. They all have handy add-ins like transcripts, automated video subtitles, and even downloadable audio lessons.

Despite the brevity, I found Creative Class to be fairly comprehensive for beginner training.

Developing soft skills for creative freelancers seems like a rather specific niche, but I’d say that the course manages to cover all of the essentials. The lessons are short but concise.

They even give you assignments at the end of each lesson, as well as templates to help you send the perfect message to clients and leads.

Unfortunately, Creative Class doesn’t have a community solely for its students. While Peak Freelance has a free community on Slack, I found it to be limited to some rather basic threads.

If you value community highly, I’d advise that you opt for a Peak Freelance membership.

Green Lights 🟢

Some positive points for Creative Class…

Reasonable price.Fairly comprehensive core training.Text, audio, and video versions of lessons.Clear instructions, easy to follow, and step-by-step.The founders and owners seem to be the real deal.No overhyped promises or shady marketing.Red Flags 🚩

Some knocks on Creative Class…

Lack of significant success stories from students.Mostly suitable for beginner freelance creatives. No community solely for students (though Peak Freelance has a free community)No search functionality; makes it harder to find your way around.Only open for enrollment twice per year.Other things you should knowYou’ll find lots of handy downloads within the training, including checklists, templates, spreadsheets, etc.Although Elise Dopson and Michael Keenan acquired CC in 2022, the video lessons still feature Paul Jarvis. That leads me to believe that they haven’t added their own touch to the training yet.Creative Class seems to be one of many training products offered by Peak Freelance. There is also the Peak Freelance membership, as well as Freelance Writing Essentials.Creative Class is only open for enrollment twice per year. Usually you can join during a two-week period in Spring/Summer, and another two-week period in Autumn/Winter.👇 Subscribe to eBiz Daily 👇

Should you join Creative Class?

If you belong to the exact audience that Creative Class targets – ie. freelance creatives who haven’t reached their full potential yet – you’ll likely find lots of valuable tips here.

Even though the training is quite short, I found it rather comprehensive and reasonably priced. Most of the content seems evergreen, but I’m still hoping that the new owners will add some updates in due time.

Just keep in mind that Creative Class does not have a dedicated community, but the free Peak Freelance community on Slack or its paid membership may fill that gap for you.

Crypto Newsletter Earning $30K/Month

Dillon NewmanDillon NewmanCo-Founder of CoinSnacks $30,000 per month newsletter revenue
Published November 11, 2022 by Niall Doherty

Dillon Newman is the co-founder of CoinSnacks, a newsletter that delivers “digestible crypto news” once a week to 70,000+ subscribers.

According to a recent interview, the newsletter is now earning $30,000 per month and on pace for $360,000 in total revenue in 2022 💰

They mainly monetize by selling sponsorship spots in the newsletter. A recent edition I saw had almost 900 words of content, with about 50 words promoting a sponsor.

Dillon and a friend came up with the idea for CoinSnacks back in 2017 after Dillon lost his job at a financial research company…

we were reading a few crypto-focused newsletters to become more knowledgeable in the space. Although they were all good, we quickly realized that they were speaking to an intermediate to an advanced audience.

So it dawned on us: What if we wrote a newsletter focused on bringing people with no crypto knowledge to a beginner’s level? That’s when CoinSnacks was born.

A key takeaway from this is you don’t need to be an expert on a topic to start and grow a newsletter…

Through this process, I have learned that it is okay to build your knowledge of the industry as you build your product. I didn’t have to be an expert on day one. You can always hire experts or spend your time learning an industry inside and out. But if there is no competition in a market, even subpar information will win. Just start.

Also noteworthy: a big part of the CoinSnacks growth strategy has been acquiring other newsletters in the same space 🤝

For example, they bought…

A 25,000-subscriber newsletter for $15,000A 2,000-subscriber newsletter for $600

Apparently that has been a much cheaper way for them to add subscribers compared to something like Facebook ads.

Dillon recommends reaching out to newsletters manually to discuss an acquisition; he figures you can cut much better deals that way.

But if you prefer browsing a marketplace of newsletters for sale, check out Duuce.

$583,064 One-Woman WordPress Plugin

Laura ElizabethCreator of Client Portal WordPress Plugin $145,000 per year
Published November 10, 2022 by Niall Doherty

Laura Elizabeth sells a plugin called Client Portal, self-described as…

… a super simple, lightweight WordPress plugin that you can use on your website today (no developer needed!) to allow your clients to keep track of the project and give them access to all files at any time.

Pricing starts at $199 for a single site license.

Laura launched the plugin in 2016, but it didn’t seem to take off until she offered a lifetime deal (LTD) for it via the AppSumo marketplace a couple of years later.

Laura’s husband Brennan Dunn recently shared some info about the business in his Create & Sell newsletter

My wife, Laura Elizabeth (follow her, she’s awesome), had her first big break thanks to AppSumo. She sold her product, Client Portal, on AppSumo and a few thousand people bought. After AppSumo got their cut, her take per sale was peanuts – but the momentum that LTD brought has gone on to yield $583,064 in sales for her solo business over the last few years. Not too shabby!

By my calculations, that’s $583,064 in about 4 years, or roughly $145,000 per year.

Laura has written about how Client Portal came to be. Basically, she was a freelancer with multiple clients and wanted a simple way to “to organise my projects both for myself and my clients.”

So she built Client Portal for her own freelance business initially, then started selling it as a WordPress plugin for anyone to use.

$100K/Month Lead Gen Agency

Andre Haykal JrKnowledgeX Co-Founder & CEO $100,600 in one month
Published November 9, 2022 by Niall Doherty

Andre Haykal Jr tweeted about a year ago that he’d grown his “lead generation agency to $46k/mo in just 6 months.”

More recently he shared that the same agency pulled in $100,600 in revenue in August 🤑

The agency is called KnowledgeX, and it positions itself as a lead generation service for agency owners.

Andre notes that his clients come from three main acquisition channels…

– Inbound leads from Twitter
– Cold outreach
– Referrals

Cold outreach has always been a consistent source from us, but leads from referrals and Twitter have been insane…

This goes to show how important it is to build a brand online!

He has a thread here on his 4-step process for cold outreach.

Andre is a good example of turning one successful business into multiple 😎

Once he got his agency humming along, he built a productized service to help with cold outreach and a course teaching people how to build an agency.

He shared monthly revenue numbers from all three businesses back in March…

KnowledgeX (B2B lead gen agency): $63k
Client Ascension (coaching program): $104.6k
@ListKitio (list building service): ~$8k

That amounted to $175,567 in total revenue in a single month. Apparently Andre “posted a $789 loss” from his business the same month a year before.

He writes…

if I can go from losing $789 in a month to generating nearly $200k in a month…

So can you 👊

Here’s how:

We treat all income claims we find online with skepticism. We don’t report incomes that seem especially controversial or unrealistic. We cite our sources and/or share our calculations so you can see where the numbers come from.If there are uncertainties about an income claim or estimate, we tell you what those are.

If you see an income claim or estimate that seems off, please tell us so we can fix it.
