FULL-BODIED ENTITY Vanishes After Smiling & Waving (PERSONAL ENCOUNTER)

I'll admit, that a lot of strange and unexplained phenomena occur around me. I guess it goes along with what I do. I recently experienced 'something' I have yet to explain. Lon

On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, I was driving to a 2 PM appointment here in Hanover, Pennsylvania. It was approximately 1:40 PM as I drove east on Kindig Lane towards High Street. As I approached the intersection, I noticed to my left a stocky man dressed in dungaree bib overalls walking along the shrubbery on the south side of Utz Brands (Utz factory).

As I watched this man, he stopped walking, turned around, looked at me, smiled, and then waved. Even though this is a heavily trafficked area, there were no other vehicles in front or behind me. He was wearing a plaid shirt under the overalls.

After he waved he turned slowly, took 3 steps and completely vanished!

I was approximately 50 feet from him and I was able to distinguish fine details on his face and clothing. He had a white beard and looked to be in his 50s or 60s. I was a bit stunned since I did not notice any deficiencies in this manifestation. It looked completely corporeal and living!

This area of town is somewhat recognized for paranormal and unexplained activity. In fact, DeAnna Simpson's former home (Hanover Haunting) is nearby on Maple Street. Historically, the old pike between Hanover and Gettysburg (Rt. 116) is a block away. There have been apparitions of Civil War & Colonial Period soldiers and horses reported along the road between the towns. There used to be a water-filled quarry nearby in the 19th century where many drownings occurred. In the past, I have investigated 7 homes and businesses for hauntings within a 1/2 mile radius of my recent sighting.

Anyway, I may conduct an investigation at the location at some point, especially if more encounters or activities are reported. Lon

'Restaurant X': TIME DISPLACEMENT or ALTERNATE REALITY in Chicago?

A reader contacts me about an incident in Chicago. I don't know if it's a time displacement from an earlier period or an actual entrance into an alternate reality.

I received the following odd incident account:

"Dear Mr. Strickler. I would like to thank you for your website. I appreciate that you let people tell their stories, without harsh judgement. That is why I’ve decided to contact you. I have come to the conclusion that I am just someone who has odd experiences. I have had things happen to me since I was a kid. UFO sightings, paranormal encounters, possible cryptids; I just seem to be in the right place at the right time. Over the years I have grown more comfortable with the experiences I’ve had, I just wish I could explain them better. One experience that still bothers me, since I can’t even figure out a category in which to put it, is an experience I had many years ago. I have recently remembered a number of strange things I’ve witnessed, and these memories have had such an urgency about them. It is a little unsettling. However, I try to remain open, so I can remember/experience them to the best of my ability.

The incident I’ve been reminded of was when I was in Chicago for a ‘tourist’ weekend, with a woman I was dating. We had been to the Art Institute during the day on Saturday. It was a Saturday in August of 1988 or 89, I know I was in graduate school at the time. After we had left the Art Institute, we walked around the area and window shopped until around 8pm. We were both getting hungry, so we decided to find someplace to eat. She mentioned that there were supposed to be good restaurants in a warehouse district a little north of where we were. So we drove a little and parked the car in what seemed like a rather questionable area. There were plenty of people walking about, so it also seemed to be ok. We walked a few blocks and were in what seemed to be a construction area, or maybe a destruction area, they seemed to be tearing a building down. Next to this lot, was a multilevel building, but not tall enough to be a sky scraper, maybe a 10 or 12 floor office-type building. This area was devoid of other people, and the building seemed to be shut down for the weekend, but we walked right up to the front door and went into the building. There was a hallway that stretched out in both directions to the left and right. On the wall in front of us was a sign that said “Restaurant X”.

There were 2 heavy appearing, wood doors just down the hallway to our left. We walked to the doors and opened one of them. We stepped into a very dimly lit restaurant, that also seemed devoid of people. All of the sudden a woman appeared, out of nowhere, and asked us to follow her. She was dressed in a dark suit, and was carrying menus. She sat us at a square table near the center of the restaurant, gave us our menus and a wine list then walked away. We were descended upon by three wait staff; one woman and two men. I don’t remember much about their appearance other than they were all dressed in clean white chef’s coats and dark pants? Didn't really see the pants, but it was a dark garment, so I assumed they were wearing pants. The woman took our orders and then instructed the men to carry out our requests. On guy was the wine guy, who would run over and pour wine whenever our glasses were a bit low, and the other guy was the water guy doing the same thing. The woman took our food order. I remember I ordered the skate on angel hair pasta with a lemon butter sauce. I remember that because I had never seen skate on a menu before, and honestly, I haven’t seen it on a menu since. It was delicious! The wine was excellent, and odd. Odd because we ordered one bottle of wine and drank from it all night…we probably consumed about 3 bottles worth. And we didn’t get drunk, but we should have at least been tipsy. As we were eating, no one else came into the restaurant. We had the whole place to ourselves. The wait staff would stand off to the side of the restaurant, behind us, where it was dark and difficult to see them. We finished our meal, paid our bill and left. We talked about how odd it was that there were no people around and that there was no one in the restaurant. We went back to our hotel, and left for home the next day.

Now is where stuff gets really weird. At the time, I was involved in biathlon racing (at this time it was running and biking and went on to be called duathlons). I was to do the Coors Light Biathlon in Chicago that next weekend. I would be traveling back to Chicago on Wednesday, with a close friend who was also in the race. We traveled to Chicago, and stayed at the race hotel, the Hyatt on Whacker Dr. Got to the hotel in the late afternoon, unpacked, and my friend mentioned that she was getting hungry. I suggested going to this great restaurant that I had eaten at the weekend before. It was pricey, but it was worth it, and I mentioned that it was within walking distance just north of our hotel over the river.

I do not remember the address, but at the time I knew where it was. So we set off to walk to the restaurant in the early evening. We got to the corner where the building was being torn down and there was the office-type building next door. The office building looked different, more abandoned, if that makes sense, like it had been sitting, empty for some time. More run down, maybe. The building was there, however, there was no Restaurant X. Again, we could get in the building, but there was no sign on the wall. There were some desks in the hallway with some chairs turned upside down on top of them. They were dusty, like they had been there for a while. There was also some writing, I guess graffiti, on the hallway wall. Those two heavy wood doors were not there. There was no evidence that there ever was a Restaurant X, or any other thing at that location. It looked like an abandoned office complex that had been empty for way more than four days. At first, I thought I was mistaken about where I was, but I’m really good with directions and locations. I looked around the neighborhood and it was the right location, and it was the right building. I was really confused, and a little upset. My friend suggested that we just find a different place to eat. She figured that the restaurant just closed. I knew that was not right. We ate at a different place a couple blocks away, and went back to the hotel. Once we got back to the hotel, I looked in the phone book, no listing for Restaurant X. I called information, no such business. I asked the registration clerk if she knew about Restaurant X, she did not.

The woman I was dating was a reference librarian at the Iowa State library. I told her about the disappearance of Restaurant X when I got home after the race. She looked into it a little, but could find no information or evidence that Restaurant X ever existed. The more I think about it, the odder it gets.

I have been having some other types of experiences recently. I don't know what to think of some of the things that have been happening, or how to deal with them. I'm not crazy, nor do I desire to focus attention on myself. I just want to know how to go about investigating the experiences I've had/am having. I would appreciate your take on the above experience. I have never run across anything that seemed similar. Thank you. JM"

NOTE: I have heard of similar situations before, and oddly enough, many occur in areas where there are buildings. I don't know if it's a time displacement from an earlier period or an actual entrance into an alternate reality. It is a bewildering phenomenon. Lon

HOMELESS FARM WORKERS Abducted by 'HAIRY MEN' in California's Central Valley

During the early 1960s, a young man was migrating through California to avoid the military draft. While staying in a homeless tent camp, he heard stories about abductions by 'hairy men.'

"In 1963, during the Vietnam War period, a friend, looking to avoid the draft, was hopping trains across California. He did odd jobs to pay for food and sometimes stayed at homeless tent camps, many of which had been erected in the woods along the railways on the West Coast at the time.

The witness recalled being told, while in the Central Valley, by one of the camp stayers early on to be vigilant at night, that when the farming season ended, people had a tendency to disappear. This fellow blamed it on the “hairy men,” and claimed that when the farming season ended, they preyed on people.

The witness thought it silly, though sometime later, a man did go missing from the camp and it was blamed on a “hairy man.” The witness felt the campstayers were completely sincere. He also heard talk of a “boneyard” with human remains found in the forest.

He eventually left and returned home. He would ultimately be drafted to serve in the military though he remained stateside repairing engines. (At no point does he claim to have seen a Bigfoot though he does believe that something anomalous was happening at those homeless camps)."

BROWN, SCALEY LIZARD HUMANOID Encountered in the Chesapeake Bay

An experienced sailor, along with 30-year US Navy Captain, witnessed a brown, scaley lizard humanoid rise to the Chesapeake Bay surface and blink at them. What did they see?

“We were moving up the east coast of the United States to the Chesapeake Bay. I was working on a 41-foot sailboat out in the middle of Chesapeake Bay. There were seven other men on the boat that day, we were taking it out for a test cruise and were expected to be out for about 12 hours.

So this was in the mid-1980s, and weather prediction resources weren't as reliable as they are today, and we found ourselves caught up in an unexpected storm. The winds were gusting to 50 miles an hour, edging into the weak hurricane range. But we were lucky. There was one particularly experienced guy on board who had sensed the storm approaching and that it was serious. So, we'd rigged the storm sounds just in time, just before the storm hit. If we hadn't I'm certain we would have all died. Well as it was I fully expected to die at any moment during that storm.

We called for help and for at least 15 minutes, we were in a maelstrom, with absolutely zero visibility, and then, it passed. The storm was over. So by about 3 PM, everything had calmed down. There was still cloud cover but the ambient light allowed us to see about two miles or so in any direction. It's worth mentioning at this point that after fierce storms like that, it's common, particularly in shallower depths near land masses, for things to be dredged up off the sea floor.

So, we're all on deck working lines and checking for damage and the bay around us is still choppy, it's churning and foaming. Old-timey sailors use the saying, "The sea is confused."

Anyway, I looked about 15 feet off the starboard side and saw something swim to the surface, pause and stare at us, or should I say, glare at us, then submerge again. I got a good look at it. It was like a thin man, definitely a humanoid shape. It was lean but it had muscular arms and its skin was covered in scales like a snake. Its head was human-like but its eyes weren't, they were big, with thick heavy lids. Now I noticed this because as it stared at us, it blinked them slowly, and deliberately, then dove back under the water.

Let me just say at this point that I was not affected by drugs or alcohol, and I hadn't been injured in the storm. If anything, I was elated just to be alive so my senses were heightened not dulled. When this happened, I had about six years of experience on ships and fishing boats. I'd seen squid, octopi, flying fish, sharks, etc., in waters all over the world. I wasn't the kind of guy to see a patch of seaweed and think it was a sea monster, okay? That being said, I made an instant decision that I wasn't going to say anything to anyone. What was I going to say, "I just saw a strange humanoid aquatic monster, just take my word for it"? Well, the other men on the boat were mechanics and engineers and I had no desire to get a reputation as a flake.

So I'm standing there in my life vest, soaking wet, hooked onto the steel lifeline, still feeling relieved to be alive and wondering what the hell I just saw, when one of the other sailors said "I just saw a brown thing pop up on the surface! It looked like a lizard man, with a scaly face. It blinked at us with these big eyes and then went back under!" "Yeah." I said, "I saw it too." No one else said that they'd seen it, and to this day I'm surprised I blurted that out but, I think I got the courage because the other sailor, the one who saw it, was a United States Captain with over 30 years experience in the Navy. He was respected and liked by the crew and I guess that's what gave me the confidence.

Later that day, we sailed back to the pier without speaking another word of what we'd seen in the water. To this day, I still don't know what it was. But, I know it wasn't a man. No man could have been out in that water and no man could have looked like the thing I saw. The thing that looked me in the eye that day.”

'SHARLIE, THE LAKE MONSTER' Reported by Idaho Witness

The witness and two friends swear that they observed a serpent-like cryptid floating on Payette Lake near McCall, Idaho. Could the legend be true?

I recently received the following account:

"Hi. In 1974 a close and dear friend and her sister saw a huge serpent creature on the southside of Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho. We were heading back to Boise from camping on the north side of the lake. Karen was driving and I was sitting directly behind her. Karen and I were looking out to to our left and saw this huge serpent on top of the water just floating. It was totally floating with its narrow and long head and a very long neck with 3 huge humps plus maybe more submerged, we didn't see the tail. It was on the opposite shore of the lake. (looked like a Dino, the Dinosaur Icon) Its body filled up the whole cove from across the lake. It was gray, shiny, and looking in the easterly direction. We both just stared and she kept on driving.

We both were having a cigarette with the windows down. I said, "Karen, do you see what I see?" She said, 'Yes! Yes!" Then, nodded vigorously. Her sister said '"What is that?" She refused to talk about it and was quiet all the way back home. We all were in fact.

2 years ago my dear friend Karen passed away. We hadn't talked about our sightings since 1974. One day we decided to report it to a museum or historian to let it be known that 'Sharlie the Lake Monster' does exist and possibly today! Her sister still doesn't talk about our sighting. It scared her to pieces.

I feel like we are blessed to witness such a sighting. But it did take many years to tell the world. We never heard of Sharlie before. Who would have believed 3 teenagers in 1974?

One day I bought a Loch Ness magazine with stories of sightings from around the world including Idaho. A year before my dear friend passed, I asked her if she would make an official statement with me to have our story in writing. Karen agreed and we tried to contact someone to help us post the sighting; to tell the world what we saw exists and is real!

THOUGHTFORMS & TULPAS: MANIFESTING 'MIND MONSTERS'

Many researchers of the paranormal (including myself) believe that some manifestations and poltergeist phenomena (objects flying through the air, doors slamming, etc.) can be products of the human mind (tulpas or thoughtform manifestation).

To test that idea, a fascinating experiment was conducted in the early 1970s by the Toronto Society for Psychical Research (TSPR) to see if they could create a ghost. The idea was to assemble a group of people who would make up a completely fictional character and then, through séances, see if they could contact him, receive messages and other physical phenomena - perhaps even an apparition.

Dr. A.R.G. Owen led a group of eight people from the Toronto Society for Psychical Research. None of these people were known to have any particular abilities in ESP, psychic, channeling, or other physical or mental specialties. They proceeded to create a person on paper, giving the person the name Philip Aylesford. The group created Philip’s entire life story: He lived in 17th-century England, was married, had a love affair, and ultimately died by his own hand in 1654. Someone from the group even traveled to England to photograph the area where it was said Philip had lived. Another group member sketched a drawing of Mr. Aylesford. The experiment began with the entire group meeting frequently to discuss the life and times of Philip as they would any interesting real person. Much time was spent in deep concentration, meditation, and séances as a group about Philip.

After a year of continued experimentation, Philip began to make "his" presence known. Beginning with simple taps and raps they quickly become yes/no answers. He even gave factual answers to known historical events of his time. Soon after Philip manifested physical abilities. He was able to shake and move a table the group used.

Dr. Owen repeated his experiment several times with different groups of people and was able to create other manifestations including Lilith, an 18th-century French Canadian spy; Sebastian, a medieval alchemist; and very curiously Axel, a man from the future! All manifested very quickly after the experiment started and also communicated via raps and taps. At the beginning of the experiment, the stated goal was to eventually create an apparition. Though toward the end of 1977, they felt they were close to reaching that goal, interest in the experiment waned and activities were discontinued. - The Philip Experiment

Inspired by these experiments a group from Australia conducted The Skippy Experiment in which they created the persona of Skippy Cartman, a 14-year-old Australian girl.

Because of the results of these experiments, some would conclude that this proves that ghosts don't exist and that such things are in our minds only. Others may say that our unconscious could be responsible for this kind of phenomenon some of the time. Regardless there is no way to prove that ghosts don't exist. Philip was completely fictional...the spirit world was never contacted. This was simply a psychokinetic anomaly manufactured by the collective human consciousness. The only certain conclusion is that there is much to our existence and beyond that is still unexplained.

On an interesting side note, after these experiments were started, the 'religion' of Spiritualism increased dramatically in popularity, especially in the United States, Canada, England, and Wales. Spiritualists believe in communicating with the spirits of discarnate humans. They believe that spirit mediums are humans gifted to do this, often through seances, and that anyone may become a medium through study and practice. They believe that spirits are capable of growth and perfection, progressing through higher spheres or planes. The afterlife is not a static place, but one in which spirits evolve. The two beliefs - that contact with spirits is possible, and that spirits may lie on a higher plane - lead to a third belief, that spirits can provide knowledge about moral and ethical issues, as well as about God and the afterlife. Thus many members speak of spirit guides - specific spirits, often contacted, and relied upon for worldly and spiritual guidance. - Spiritualism in Antebellum America (Religion in North America)[image error]

I personally believe in some of these tenets...but defined a bit differently. True mediumship, in my opinion, is an instilled gift. I don't think that it can be learned or taught. I do believe that spirits are remnant energy that do have the ability to communicate as well as pass through portals (wormholes) between this world and other locations in our universe and possibly others. I feel that the afterlife is like a 'way station', where these life energies remain after they leave their earthbound environment. Some of these former earthbound energies evolve into 'helpers' for living beings...while others are integrated and merged with other living spirits. There is nothing religious or dogmatic with my theories...it's just what I have hypothesized after being subjected to the supernatural. Lon

Experiencer: I feel I have said “too much” and these “monsters” tell me hints to help me with minor and major things. But my problem is that I don’t have enough faith in “them.”
I received the following email:

"It wasn’t until quite recently that I realized my odd hallucinations and “awake nightmares” which had caused me to believe that I was either insane or possessed by some sort of demon although I did not believe in demons. At 12 years old I confided in a psychiatrist about a single event and it was determined I suffer from Hypnagogia. The psychiatrist noted that I had a vivid hallucination and I was admitted to hospital. Since then I have not shared my experiences and never found out what they were — until quite recently I stumbled upon a UFO and strange events website. There were others with the same experience I had!! The relief, the Eureka moment, and I have suffered from great fear, insomnia, and the suspicion that I was quite insane deep down inside.

Whew...OK, just talking about this upsets me but there are others here with much more descriptive events. Why aren’t these on the news? Why isn’t this accepted in Western society? It’s baffling! This denial of spirit/alien? beings has ruined my life, and for some of my adult life was involved in drugs, in and out of mental hospitals. I am very sad that I did not have the opportunity to discover others' experiences earlier. Yes, even in this day and age of the internet, etc. I never, never put two and two together until recently! I would laugh at anyone with a belief in these things. How could I have not seen what it really was? Denial.

When I was very young, I must have been around 5 or 6 I was sleeping at the edge of the bed that my elder sister and I shared. Everyone was asleep except (I think) my father was in the living room watching TV. I woke up in the middle of the night for no reason but normal for a child? A “visitor” suddenly appeared in my bedroom doorway, he was leaning against the frame just staring at me. He was nothing but a deep black cut-out shape of a completely motionless man. I told myself it was an illusion and shut my eyes tight and held my breath (so the man couldn’t see me) but, even with my eyes closed I could still SEE him quite evidently (how?). He gave me the impression that he found it humorous that I was trying to “hide” and I really could feel his eyes. I lie there wishing someone in the household would wake up and make this “man” go away. I held my breath as long as I could...I was so terrified, I thought I would die of fright. Can you imagine being this afraid? I remember trying to damper my heartbeat because he could “hear” it. It was beating so hard I think I could see the beats coming up through the blankets. I must have either passed out from holding my breath or from fright. I never told anyone (that I know of or can remember, that is...)

The next time, I was lying on my grandmother's guest bed while I was over for a visit. I was 11 or 12 years old. I was just lying there thinking...not sleepy nor wanting to sleep. Suddenly I heard a sound getting louder and louder. It sounded like thousands of “electric bees”. It made my head “vibrate”. The “bees” sound slowly formed itself into words. It reminds me of trying to find an AM radio station and just tuning in to clarity. The “sound” (I will try to explain it as best I can, it defies what I know of physics so far) “took” me up in the air a la Scrooge being led by a ghost of Xmas past! I was “flown” over what I think to be the 1940s. I could hear the “bees” chanting louder and louder! Up to a crescendo that inferred something like “we are legions”. The “vision” I saw was Hitler, and he had not thousands of followers but millions! I was shown the colors red, white, and black. They have some significance that the “electric bees” wanted me to note. I was “brought back” and found myself wide awake back on the bed and thinking to myself “Hmm, wow, this must be what insane people feel when they hallucinate. This is very strange and I must seek professional help” but somehow even at my youth I did not believe the good doctor's explanation.

Fast forward to adult married life. I warned my new husband “Be careful, since we now share a bed I must confide in you that I suffer from extreme night terrors where I get “monsters” bothering me and you must wake me when I call for you in my sleep.” Yes...this refrain is common when I share a bed with anyone. Sometimes I can manage to get out a muffled “hellllp meeee...wake me up...monsters..”

The “nightmares” always start with a weird noise, like the sound you imagine you feel if you are being electrocuted (the best I can describe it). There have been several instances in the past year where my mate “rescued” me. These “monsters” all come armed with nightmares with a common theme/message. In one of my nightmares, a soothing and calm man tried to explain the symbols in the dream, he even pointed and made some verbalizations that I could not make out. It is as if “they” were doing their very best trying to convince me of something but that I cannot speak their language. In this vision, I was witness to a major “Battlestar Galactica” scene, and many planets, namely Saturn, etc., and Earth were involved in a stellar battle...there was cannibalism, blood, guts, horror! Absolute horror (The more I tell these stories the more descriptive they get, as I now can make out more details that I am not trying to stuff the memories deep inside anymore). I totally understand the messages now but I cannot explain them, not because it is impossible, but that you will find it trite and probably won’t believe it. Even if you believe my experiences, which in fact did happen, I am constantly in fear of the chance I may see the monsters again. I understand NOW that the monsters were not trying to harass me but instead helping me with important messages. I will say that “they” are supposed to instill great fear into people but they do not do it out of cruelty, but do so that you will respect and see them in awe.

After praying (I come from a very scientific and logical-minded upbringing so this praying thing is all new to me) I was given “hints” by the former “monsters” (they are now what I think are friends, but I am still horrified at the idea of seeing one again!) to look around every day for more clues. A clue may present itself in a playlist on a station that you just tuned to (song titles) or in other coincidences. I prayed..."Well if you can tell me these things in this way, why not show Mankind the clues in more obvious ways!" “They” said that they do, but we don’t believe it, and also it has to be this way, because we are given FREE WILL and that “they” already HAVE robots that do and think what they want! “They” are angry and sad that we human beings on Earth don’t appreciate “it” and always take credit for “their” things and that “it” is a special gift that we shouldn’t take for granted.

I feel I have said “too much” and these “monsters” tell me hints to help me with minor and major things. But my problem is that I don’t have enough faith in “them”. You can make what you want out of this and if you think I am a complete nut that is OK, I guess, but I wish more people would talk about these things. I wish more people would go to the news with their experiences, some of them are so incredible, I can’t believe that these things aren’t more accepted! It is so sad.

'SNOWMEN' OF THE Pamir Mountains

There has been a renewed interest in the 'wildmen' of Asia, probably the best known is the Yeti. But there have been expeditions into the more tropical areas of south-central Asia as well.
In this post, I want to concentrate on mountainous central Asia, specifically those hominids or 'snowmen' that are said to exist in the Pamir Range of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and northern Pakistan. These hominids go by several monikers...the Barmanu, the Tajik Yeti, the Almysty, the Golub-Yavan, or simply the Gul.

In August 2001, the Russian magazine Karavan + I published an article about the killing of a wild man on the old Soviet-Afghanistan border. According to the author, border guards of the Kevran unit in the Pamir Mountains saw a "Snowman" during the winter of 1967/68. They reported their observation to their superior, Kuzkov, the officer in charge of the unit. He did not, at first, pay any attention to it.

The soldiers of the next watch again saw a creature and reported the fact. Subsequently, the duty officer accompanied the soldiers to the spot and personally observed the creature. Kuskov informed his superior officer, a colonel in Khorog – a settlement on the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border. News about this reached the Central Asia Command where, in February 1968, a high-ranking officer gave the order, ‘Catch him or, if that isn’t possible, eliminate him!’. Thereupon, the border guards shot the creature and took it to the border post. The body was stored in a woodshed. A subsequent article 3) in Karavan + I in September 2001 on the happening disclosed that the body was taken to Moscow in great secrecy.

The magazine questioned two scientists to establish what had happened to the remains of the "Snowman". One of these was Georgy Skvorzov, director of the program Animals in inhabited settlements and, according to Karavan, for many years a collector of information about the ‘Snowmen’.

[Karavan:] Georgy, do you believe in the existence of the Snowmen?

[Skvorzov:] Of course. The Snowman has not only just been seen once in the mountains of Tibet, in the Pamir Mountains, Siberia, and the northern Caucasus. In recent times these sightings have been fewer. Probably these very cautious creatures are hiding from the advancing human civilisation.

[Karavan:] Do you know about the affair at the end of Winter 1968 when our border guards killed a Snowman in the Pamir Mountains and brought his body to the capital? Did scientists get their hands on this specimen?

[Skvorzov:] We have slightly different information if we are talking about the same event. According to my information, the body of a Snowman was found by a shepherd in the Pamir Mountains in the autumn of 1968. But at that time our scientists only received pieces of the fur and the eye-teeth.

The magazine confided that their editor had been visited by an ex-border guard called Andrej. He had served in the Pamir Mountains during the 1960s and had confirmed the killing of a "Snowman" at the place mentioned. Further information about what happened to the body or about the fur and eye teeth was not given.

In the Russian Newspaper Simbirskij Kur'er (Simbirsk Courier), Arsenij Korolev reported in 2002 among others about a 1982 expedition of the Tajik Academy of Science in the Hissar Mountains in the western Pamirs. The academy was equally involved in the 'snowman' problem. According to Korolev, in the 1980s, many adventure lovers came to Tajikistan in search of snowmen. During their holidays, media workers organized themselves into groups and came to the Hissar Mountains. A great number of publications followed as a result and the local press was full of stories concerning the Gul' He writes: “Only a few, however, knew that this puzzle would be solved by the scientists of the Tajik Academy of Science." Tatjana Vasileva, at that time a scientist at the academy, is quoted as follows: “Despite all that, the scientists were not inactive. Of course, we were inquisitive to follow the traces of the snowman, particularly so when this legend was just close to us. But the leading staff of the Academy was against an official expedition. The only thing that we could do was to organize an expedition that was dealing with soil profiles. At the same time, we could also search for traces of the snowman."

At the beginning of May 1982, a ten-member expedition left for the Hissar Mountains. Flora and fauna-related materials were collected and examined to find possible eyewitnesses of the snowman. The expedition team noted that the locals themselves would reluctantly talk about the Gul. Often, they changed the subject quite abruptly. In most cases, no personal experiences would be reported except for encounters with another person. The expedition found no traces of "Snowmen".

Furthermore, Korolev reported about an encounter with a police chief of Tadshikabad who spent the weekend with friends in the mountains: “After lunch, the friends went to the river for a bath. The policeman was tired and fell asleep. He only woke up because someone was shaking his car. He looked back and saw a Gul beside his Shiguli. The Gul was pushing the Shiguli forward. Then, the creature placed its hands at the rear windscreen of his car. Full of fear, the policeman shot up and the Gul ran away. But the prints of his hands on the rear windscreen of his car have remained. A Tajik detective has taken these prints and has forwarded them to the police department of criminal investigation."

A guide Surob stakes his honor on the wild man's existence. “I saw his footprints, bigger than the man’s, in the snow.”

The road slides upwards from Dushanbe and starts to disintegrate. Surob gestures towards a sad-looking town to our right. “That’s a town where I was born, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, people started banging, stealing, breaking everything, proving they are the Yetis.” He bristles when I suggest the Yeti may be a peasant mirage. “They swear on the Koran. Why should they lie? They know nothing, they have nothing, they swear by Allah they have seen it.” I back down.

We pull up at a shack for a pit stop. This is where the valley begins. I am peckish. Soviet-style sweets are displayed in plastic bags. “What’s the best one?” I ask in Russian. The proprietor dashes to a side room and brings me a Snickers bar. My guide wants to hurry, but an old man with an unwashed beard and one strikingly yellow tooth asks for a ride up toward his village. Surob asks him if he is from here. “He from here. Now I will gather the information.”

The peasant knows about the Yeti. “Ten years ago, I saw him. I was climbing a hill to gather firewood and I saw somebody. I go hey, hey, but then he started running towards me. It was the Yeti, covered in black wool, with breasts like the woman’s…”

I ask him to swear on the Koran that he saw the Yeti. Raising his hand to heaven the old man insists and gives me his Islamic word. “I don’t know about other people, but I saw it. It was shouting with anger, rarghh, I was shouting with fear, eeee, and I run.” The countryside changes dramatically as we talk. The road has become a dirt track. The car is swerving and sidling as it climbs up the barren gullies. The old man insists he saw the Yeti. Everyone knows somebody who is in the nearby villages. “When I got back to the village, my father started reading the Koran to me, as protection.”

Nature is starting to blossom in rich abundance. Cherry blossom hangs off the crags. Shoots of wild onions sprout out of the dark earth. “Look,” says Surob. “Look at the herbals, the Yeti is eating the herbals, this is why he lives here.” Colored tips of wildflowers, blues, reds, and purples, grow among the jagged browns, reds, and greys of the mountains. Another curve. A stark, barren river valley. “Hey, they saw him too.” Surob stops the car and gives traditional greetings to two middle-aged men driving the traditional clapped-out Lada.

“Yeah, I had a fight with him,” says the hunter. “He has wool, black wool, and these breasts…” And he wolf-whistles. His companion, a chubby man in a sizeable skullcap, butts in. “Oh yes, I was up in the glade, and he attacked my donkey. It was very frightening. He looked like a wild man — or a clever monkey.” The sightings occur in the same places. Regularly.

In 1983 Dimitri Bayanov of the Darwin Museum led an expedition to Tajikistan. He visited the site near Lake Pairon where two women, Geliona Siforova and Dima Sizov, had reported seeing a wild woman sitting on a boulder 10 yards (9 m) from their tent. It surveyed them for a long time, making munching sounds. They did not dare to approach it, and in the morning there were no traces of footprints or hairs.

Bayanov also visited the area of Sary Khosor and talked with Forest Service workers, who said they often had reports of wild men. Two years previously, a shepherd had driven his sheep back down from the mountains two months early because he had seen a big black 'gul' or wild man near his pasture. It had frightened his dogs and he had not dared to stay. Another Tajik had told the officers of an encounter five years earlier with 'a giant hairy man, very broad in the shoulders, with the face like that of an ape'.

The Forest Service takes these reports seriously enough to prohibit its employees from spending the night alone in the mountains, for fear of these wild men.

Bayanov had no personal encounter with wild men, but he concluded his 1982 expedition report by saying:

"The abundant signs I witnessed of local fauna, particularly omnivores such as bears and wild pigs, indicate enough food resources for the presumably omnivorous hominids the year round. The 93 percent of the Tajik Republic's territory taken up by mountains is virtually devoid of permanent human population, so the latter poses no special danger to wild hominids. The long and continuing record of purported hominid sightings, supported by these new accounts, leads me to the conclusion that such creatures do exist there."

The newspaper Vechernaja Kazan, from Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, Russian Federation, shared the following in August 2001: “A hunter from the Narynsk province [Kyrgyztan] discovered tracks of an unknown being in the mountains. Scientists were able to take a photo of these tracks - length: 45 cm, width: 35 cm. Experts assume that the hominid (if it was one) came here from the neighboring Pamir, where Tajik rebels have caused him to shy away.”

As well in 2006, Vladimir Smeljanskij reported in the Russian newspaper Rabochaja Gazeta about a business trip to Tajikistan. In the village Sary-Chashma close to the Afghani border, a teenager told him about an encounter. He claimed it happened to his father in the early 1990s. At the time, his father was working as a cowherd. One evening, he noticed that a cow was missing. As he was searching for the cow in the dark, he came across a ravine, fell, and caught himself on a vine. He called for help. Suddenly, he heard a snort. At first, he thought it was the missing cow. Then, in the light of the moon, he saw a figure: “… large head, short torso, unbelievably long arms, bent yet strong legs, and very large feet. And the entire body was covered with dark brown fur.”

The being came to the edge, held a stick down for the man, and easily hoisted him up. The two stood there a few seconds face to face. The man saw huge hands with thick fingers, ears close against his skull, and small eyes. The being was a little taller than 1.5 meters and with his broad shoulders seemed almost square. The being apparently reached for the knife on the herder’s belt and ripped it away. As an exchange, he gave him his stick. The being then turned the man around by grabbing his shoulders and giving him a light shove. In the village, at first, everyone was skeptical of the herder’s story. But then the elders remembered: “In the Pamirs, you really do meet these half-man, half-animal beings. Sometimes it helps the herders, who think of it as a mountain spirit. But only a few have been lucky enough to see it.”

The newspaper Vechernaja Cheljabinsk published the following report in 2001. The author was visiting locals in the southern part of Kyrgyzstan, near the border of Tajikistan. A local hunter, Aslanbek (his last name is not given), told the following story: “Early in the morning, I was on the lookout for ducks in a gorge, close to the lake. Suddenly, I felt a strong fear. It was foggy, but I felt like someone was close by. There was something in the wind, the fog parted, and I saw an Almysty. He was big, about two meters, and bent over like an old man. He was completely covered in dark gray hair and stared at me. I stared back for a few minutes and was afraid to move. I expected him to kill me. The elders tell how an Almysty can kill from a distance. But this one turned around and disappeared into the canyon after a few minutes. I ran away from there. Since then, I don’t want to go hunting anymore…” The encounter is said to have taken place in 2000.

In the winter of 2002, Pakistan newspapers reported that the 'Russian UFO Digest' (Rossiskij Ufologicheskij Daidjest) reported a new wildmen event in Pakistan. A 20-year-old citizen of the Pakistan village of Kharipur, Radschu, left his house and heard strange sounds from the bushes in front of it. Suddenly an apelike male creature, about 1,20m high, covered with a thick black coat, came out of the bushes and attacked and scratched him. Radschu cried and ran back into his house. The 'wildmen' fled from the apple garden when other men using torches began to search around Radschu´s house. Eyewitnesses reported the high shrill cries of the creature. Old villagers remembered they had seen such "strangers from the mountains" many times in the past, particularly in winter, when they came into the villages in search of food.

Another 'wild man' hominid is thought to live in portions of eastern Afghanistan as well as the Shishi Kuh Valley in the Chitral region of North Pakistan. The Barmanu, which translates as “The Hairy One”, is often thought to be related to early hominids and descriptions generally resemble the Neanderthal. As is the case with other sightings of man-like hairy hominids, accounts of this creature are often accompanied by tales of a horrible stench, a trait that is attributed to the creature’s wilderness lifestyle and hair-covered body. Legends of this creature have been told by the locals for centuries, but it was not until the early 1990s that the legend would receive international attention.

During the early 1900s several Spanish expeditions into the Shishi Kih Valley region of North Pakistan learned of the Barmanu through the retelling of the legend by local people. The tales of the Barmanu eventually caught the ear of zoologist Jordi Magraner who traveled to the region with medical doctor Anne Mallasse and another team member. Between 1992 and 1994 Magraner and his team detailed not only eyewitness reports but personal experiences including grunting noise thought to have been made by a primitive voice box as well as discovering ape-like footprints. Magraner was killed by one of his Pakistani guides on August 2, 2002.
