Throwback Thursday! Downtown Abbey

This is particularly appropriate as Downton’s new season recently began in the States. I originally posted this rant on Jan. 18 2014. Right now I’d like to add one new joke I just thought of: Downton Abbey is the British Big Brother but with old people.Yes, you have my permission to use that.

Yes, I meant to write DowntownAbbey. That’s the way us non-Downton watchers say it. I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be Downtown Abbey anyway. When they titled the show someone made a typo and nobody no...

Wordless Wednesday: Street Art

590x450

This is a particularly colorful and intricate mural that I found a few weeks ago.I wanted to get it all in the picture, but I also wanted to get closer so you could appreciate the color and detail. If I did get closer I’d need several pictures to get the whole mural in. Also, it’s not in the best neighborhood, so I didn’t want to linger too long either. Have a great Wednesday! ~Phil

Top Ten Tuesday! Pop Culture Moratorium

My pop culture moratorium is when I declare certain pop culture topics off limits for discussion for a calendar year. These are topics or celebrities that I believe not only I, but everyone is sick of hearing about. January is as good a time as any.

10. Taylor Swift:Look, I know we all like Taylor’s music and she seems nice enough on the awards shows, but holy cripes, enough already. I am banning any media outlets from mentioning Taylor Swift. I don’t want her music on the radio and I don’t wa...

You Never Get a Second Chance, or Do You?

Contrary to what the Rolling Stones think, time is not on your side. It’s not on your side, or my side, or anyone’s side. Time is just time. It’s not anything else. It can neither be created nor destroyed. It just marches forward, unrelenting. The problem with time is that it runs out. With just about everything else in life, by hook or by crook, you can always get more. Not time though. That’s why 2015 is special.

Why is 2015 special you ask? We get more time. Not a lot, but we get more. One...

Throwback Friday? I Have 3 Problems With The Polar Vortex

I pushed this by a day due to yesterdays post about the tragedy at Charlie Hebdo. Although this seems to be written for this week, I originally posted it almost exactly a year ago on Jan. 11, 2014.

So I thought to myself, “Phil, everyone loves cute, whimsical pictures of kittens. If you had a kitten on your blog more people would read it.” Seriously, how many of you saw the picture and said, “Awww!” and clicked on this to read more? Read on my frozen friends because the kitten wasn’t just a tr...

The Day The Humor Died

charliehebdo.fr

charliehebdo.fr

The image is what’s currently running on the Charlie Hebdo website. “I am Charlie” I rarely go serious here and I debated with myself about how to approach this post. I considered not writing on this topic. We all hear enough about tragedy on a daily basis that I thought in some small way the humor on my blog may help others, if only briefly, to forget the headlines and laugh for a minute or two. I wanted to think of a frivolous topic I could poke fun at, hoping to help people...

Wordless Wednesday! Street Art

Elicser final

Another of the incredible murals that are all over my city thanks to our annual Wall Therapy festival. I just ran across this one yesterday. It’s so much fun to turn a corner and find something completely unexpected. It’s like an Easter egg hunt I didn’t know I was a part of. One small paragraph is about as wordless as I get. Have a great Wednesday! ~Phil

Top Ten Tuesday! The Ten Most Embarrassing Songs on My iPod

“I’ve got an iPod like a pirate ship. I’ll sail the seas with 50,000 songs I’ve never heard.” That’s maybe my favorite song lyric ever. It’s from Very Busy People by The Limousines in 2011. This post however is not about good music. This post is about my own very private shame. We all have an iPod/iPhone loaded with music. It is our private sanctuary where we go to melt away our stress and change our mood. Sometimes though, our sanctuary holds secrets. There are so many other deeply personal...

The Gym as a Microcosm of Society: It’s Full of Weirdos

Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you by using the word microcosm. I’m just going to make fun of stuff. I’m sure many of you have a New Year’s resolution about getting in better shape in 2015. My blog may be able to help with that by allowing you to learn from my mistakes.

Before I go any further, I must clarify. Although I occasionally write about my adventures at the gym, I am not some big muscle, workout nut. I’m a normal, average-sized guy just trying to stay alive forever. That’s my goal at t...

Throwback Thursday! Help Wanted: Penguin Suit Nimrod

It’s kind of ironic that Throwback Thursday fell on the first day of the new year. I know that the change in the calendar is jarring enough for some of you so I decided to keep my blog schedule the same. This was my first post of 2014 and is now my first of 2015.

Help Wanted: Music Conductor. Why don’t I ever see that title in my Linked In e-mails? That’s a job I would apply for.

I was at my son’s high school jazz ensemble recital recently and there was an actual conductor. A stick holding, arm...
