As a teenager in the ’90s

As a teenager in the ’90s, I read Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s Hard Boiled.

That image of a guy’s head being hollowed out by a punch stuck with me. When I had a similar scene in my debut novel, ‘The Black Seas of Infinity“, that scene instantly popped into my head. Using Mike and Paul as references, with Mike holding aloft my M1 Garand, I researched South American guerillas and drew this illustration.

Police Brutality in effect

Police Brutality in effect.

Police Brutality

In the apocalypse, local police take it on themselves to execute whomever they choose.

Going through high school in Fairfax, VA in the late 80s, the police constantly harassed me and my fellow punk rockers.

Made-up charges, jail time, and community service, all par for the course.

In my novel, The End of The World, society falls apart, and the police randomly execute whomever they choose.

Horror story Oh The Horror…The Horror

For my horror story Oh The Horror…The Horror,  based around Loch Ness, I wanted to delve into the details to portray it as realistically as possible.
on my first trip to Scotland, I took a bus ride up into the highlands and crossed Loch Ness.
The ruins pictured are the remnants of yet another castle ransacked by the British!
Unfortunately, I didn’t see Nessie but I envisioned it as an otherworldly monster in my story!

Space! Wormholes! Alien invasions!

Space! Wormholes! Alien invasions!
As a bonafide science nerd, my girl always tells me that at least, I took all sorts of advanced classes in mathematics and physics, focusing on concepts like the relationship of time and gravity, string theory, wormholes, and black holes.
Then I read Lovecraft in 1990, and all bets were off!
This is one of the illustrations I did for my cosmic horror novel The Black Seas of Infinity.

Buried in the Woods

When I was 16 and living in white trash Northern Florida, I had a best friend named Kevin who lived in a trailer with his single mom. it was buried in the woods, on her uncle’s 10 feet of property. We’d watch horror movies there, climb on the roof to smoke cigarettes, and raid the fridge for her beer.

I always imagined, what if the woods hosted extra-dimensional, Lovecraftian creatures?

With that in mind, I illustrated this for “Dr.Seuss is Dead” in my collection of short stories “Down Highways in the Dark..by Demons Driven’.

Government conspiracies! UFOs! The fall of the US!

Government conspiracies! UFOs! The fall of the US! I read Watchmen in 1986 (on my 45-minute bus ride to school) and decided I wanted to be a comic artist. I always wanted to be an artist or writer, and this convinced me I could do both. This illustration was part of the graphic novel proposal I made to DC Comics in 1998.They only wanted superhero at the time (they were about to go bankrupt), not a complex, cosmic horror tale that spanned 10+ issues! It was a blessing and a curse. I was super disappointed at the time, but now my rights and am 3 novels and 2 anthologies into my heavily illustrated cosmic horror series, join my email list if you want to get notified when I release new work!Alien Conspiracies!
