Perspective on what Penguin Books were looking for

When I arrived in NYC, I contacted  Penguin Books and had a revelation about what they were looking for. They liked my stuff but, seeing how young and green I was, they wanted some tear sheets (proven work for another publisher) first. I found out that many artists started with magazine covers to break into the industry. The only mainstream magazines appeared to be sci-fi or fantasy-based, and I preferred science-fiction paintings. I completed these two sci-fi paintings before I got busy doing album covers.

Paintings for Penguin Books

When I first arrived in NYC in 1998, I hit up Penguin Books about doing some covers. They liked my stuff but, seeing how young and green I was, wanted to see some tear sheets (proven work for another publisher) first. I did some research and found out that many artists started with magazine covers to break into the industry. The only mainstream magazines appeared to be sci-fi or fantasy-based, and I preferred Sci-Fi. I completed these two paintings before I got busy doing album covers.

New Skull session with Dan Henk podcast guest Yaroslav Barsukov

Former Russian software engineer Yaroslav Barsukov, talks on the Skull Session with Dan Henk podcast about his just-released novel Sleeping Worlds Have No Memory. Nominated for several awards, Barsukov weaves fantasy and science fiction into a tale of two combative kingdoms and the mythical tower that could save or doom them all.
One is a larger kingdom, and the other is a smaller territory. Although the tale came out two years before the Ukraine/Russia war, some heavy coincidences resonate between the two conflicts. A topic we discuss in the podcast.

Russian author Yaroslav Barsukov

Former Russian software engineer Yaroslav Barsukov, who lives in Vienna, talks with me about his just-released novel Sleeping Worlds Have No Memory. Highly lauded—in fact, it was nominated for several awards—Barsukov weaves fantasy and science fiction into a tale of two combative kingdoms and the mythical tower that could save or doom them all.
