Book Blast: SIMON - Le Beau Series # 1 by @VADOLD
SIMON
Le Beau Series, Book 1
NOTE: Complete novel. No cliffhanger. Dual POV. Rated 18+ for language and strong sexual content.
Four years of honorably serving his country has left Simon, Cade’s younger brother, damaged and trapped in wolf form. Little did he know the only person with the ability to heal him completely would be found at home. Literally. Now that he’s found her, he is desperate to claim her.
Rose is a beautiful, voluptuous woman with limited experience with men. Although she's confident, she still has reservations. Never having a family of her own, her fear of abandonment has her fleeing romantic relationships, and doubting herself.
Travis is insane. A deadly loose cannon that a secret organization hired to destroy the Le Beau family by denying them their mates. Permanently.
Simon’s dream will be lost forever unless he is able to maintain human form.
Rose needs unconditional love and a mate to create the family she’s always wanted.
Travis’s all-consuming drive is to take Rose for himself.
Will Simon ever be whole again, able to claim his mate, giving Rose the love and family she so desperately craves? Or will Travis destroy them both?
She looked at him over her shoulder. His blue eyes seared her with heat. The intensity of his stare made her shiver. Lifting one hand, he laid his fingers against the blush of her cheek. Then he wrapped his arms around her from behind. He buried his nose in her hair and let his wolf rumble in satisfaction. “I’m ready to show you off at Julia’s whenever you are.”
“Let me check my face and hair. It’ll only take a minute.” She returned a few minutes later looking amazing.
Her hair was pulled back in a fashionable messy bun. A single strand was left loose to fall down the side of her face to the tip of her breast. He longed to follow that strand to its destination, scrape his teeth against her nipple and inhale her precious scent.
She was without a doubt the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen in his life. Rose placed her arms around his neck, and he relished how her warmth seeped into his body.
“I may have to change my mind, you look too good, and I’ll be forced to kill some idiot who tries to dance with you.”
She rolled her eyes at him and grabbed her purse. “Come on, Romeo, I’m ready for a boat ride and a turn around the dance floor.”
Simon held her hand as she got into the boat then jumped in and revved the motor. “I’ll go slow so I don’t mess up your gorgeous hair.” He winked.
She blew him a kiss and fluffed her hair dramatically.
Even going slow it only took twenty minutes to reach the pier serving the bar. He already heard the music and boisterous patrons. He cut the motor and helped her exit safely; boats weren’t designed for high heels.
Rose looked up and down the line of boat slips and shoreline. “Where’s her sign?”
“She doesn’t have one. We’d rather random humans didn’t wonder in. Mates are more than welcome, but the occasional human to happen upon the bar isn’t very well received.”
He led her to an open table. “I’ll get us drinks, would you like wine or a whiskey Coke?”
“A whiskey Coke sounds great.” Her eyes were bright with excitement as she checked out the crowd.
He squeezed into an open spot at the bar and waved over his cousin. “Julia! How are you, cher?”
“Oh, mon dieu! Simon, it’s so good to see you. I heard you found your mate.”
“I did.” He gestured to their table. “Rose is seated right there, stop over if you get a break.”
“Oh, elle est de toute beauté. You’re a lucky man, cuz.”
“Don’t I know it.” He grinned. “Can I get a Whiskey Coke and a beer?”
“Oui.”
He turned his back to the bar to check on Rose. Simon’s breath caught as she unconsciously moistened her lip with the tip of her pink tongue. That mouth was made for sin, with its plush lower lip. He imagined her mouth doing wicked things to a certain part of his anatomy. Blood thrummed in his veins. Simon turned to inconspicuously adjust himself, his faded jeans were suddenly way too tight. Her intoxicating scent of coffee and cinnamon rolls licked at his groin even from across the room. He wanted to rub himself all over her, saturating her with his scent whenever they were in public. His wolf wouldn’t be satisfied until they were mated.
Gazing at her across the room his blood surged, he imagined her naked on his bed, her thighs parted in invitation. He lowered his head and tasted her passion. Loving her long into the night, her excited cries entwining with his hoarse groans as they made the bed shudder and shake. He shook his head. He really needed to get control of his randy thoughts. This was date night and he would show her a good time away from his bed for once. Down boy, he snarled at his wolf. When he glanced at her again she was snickering and shaking her head at him. He must be imagining loudly.
“Here you go, no charge, and congratulations, Simon.” Julia rapped her knuckles on the bar top before she turned her attention to making another customer’s drink. She was very busy, so he left her to it. He’d barely taken his seat when the band took the stage for another set. He stood and held his hand out to Rose. “May I have this dance?”
“Why, yes, you may,” she said playing along.
Simon held her close enough to see the sparkles in her blue eyes. He loved the way her gaze lit up when she was happy. But his wolf itched to see her eyes dazed with passion as he made love to her, and then sated and sleepy afterwards. For now holding her on the dance floor would do. Rose’s intoxicating fragrance surrounded him, teasing his senses. He was in heaven.
He cupped her cheek with a large, warm palm. “I’m so happy you moved into our house, Rose. Having you in my arms makes me the luckiest man in the world.” The moment she agreed to move to his house he’d called it their home. His glowing blue eyes regarded her with a tenderness that made her breath hitch.
She tightened her arms around his neck, urging his face closer to hers. “I didn’t want to go back to Anna’s, to an empty bed anymore,” she told him. “If you really plan to have me as your mate, it only made sense.”
“Just say the word and I’m yours completely. Forever.” He smiled, then dipped his head, kissed her deeply and nuzzled her.

"It's time to concede, fair Katarina," Zebulon remarks in a bored tone. "Though I don't particularly mind breaking your spirit or your mind, your body I need intact." ~Zebulon
Honorable knights do not threaten and kill innocents—we protect them. ~Katarina
"I owe him everything then for saving you so that we could meet." ~Ethan
"You look like the Ethan I met in Verdane with that smirk plastered on your face," I say with a loud sigh. "That Ethan was very annoying." ~Katarina
"You think to scare me with a fluffy white dog?" ~Lilith
“Is your life so precious that it's better to live through deceit than die through valor? Are we nothing but pawns to be used as you see fit?” ~Caleb
"You have no idea how badly I want to just whisk you up into my arms and run away," he whispers before pulling away. "Sometimes I really despise duty." ~Ethan
"That's not really true," Bronwyn scoffs. "I can think of several ways, one of which includes a full-scale assault." She tosses her long black hair, and then stares out the window at the darkening evening, the twilight giving her pale skin an ethereal glow. "Or we could just feed whoever it is to Loki." ~Bronwyn

Excerpt from Chapter One ~ Pirates
The pirates seem endless as they swarm over the schooner, taking out the less experienced merchant sailors with ease. Any that challenge me fall to my blade within moments. They may have vast numbers, but their sword skills are lacking. Most try to avoid fighting me. Either they don't see me as a threat or they don't wish to harm what they view as a valuable captive.
Several pirates disregard me and storm past to surround Captain Harris, who is fighting at my side. The fool tries to lead the group away in what appears to be a last-ditch effort to protect me.
My heart wrenches when he's hit on the back of his head with a saber. He collapses to the deck unmoving. I race to his side, cutting down the three pirates surrounding him. Ignoring the battle raging all around me, I fall to my knees beside him. He stares up at me, sorrow marring his handsome features. I brush the hair from his forehead with my fingertips, watching the blood gush from the wound on his head. It's a fatal injury. He'll bleed out within moments.
"I'm so sorry, Katarina," he murmurs as I gaze into his stricken brown eyes. "I wish… I…"
"Shh, don't speak," I say, grasping his hand while his body shakes.
"S-stay strong," Harris whispers. "Don’t let… him catch you… save Tellain."
Harris knew? I gaze at him in silent question and he nods. He knew I was on the run from Zebulon the whole time. This man I thought a scoundrel could have made a fortune turning me in, and now he’s dying in an attempt to protect me instead.
"How?" I ask around the lump in my throat.
"W-wanted pos… ter."
Coughs wrack his body. With a grunt of pain, he raises his hand and brushes a light caress across my cheek with his fingers, leaving a warm smear of blood behind. His eyes glaze over in death, and I close them with my fingertips, saying a quick prayer to War God Ramil.
I rise and return to the battle raging around me, shaking with an overwhelming combination of fright and fury. Captain Harris was the only skilled swordsman on this ship, with him gone… I steel my back along with my resolve. I’m the only thing standing between the pirates and my family now—they need me, the people of Tellain need me. This is no time for sorrow, regret, or dread.
When I bury my fear, rage-fueled adrenaline consumes me. Several stunned brigands fall under the wild, almost berserk swings of my sword. Intense anger gives me strength. I cut a swath through the pirates, leaving injured and dead men lying in my wake.
My sword pierces through the stomach of a small pirate standing near the cabin door. His muddy brown eyes meet mine, shock etched across his young face. My heart sinks. He's a boy, not more than twelve years old. We stare at each other, my sword still lodged in his torso. I watch the light in his eyes dim until they glaze over and roll backward. The young pirate writhes a bit on my sword before sliding off and collapsing to the ground, a tangle of lifeless limbs. I somehow manage to continue on, though my fury has faded to grief. The only thing that keeps me swinging my sword is years of intense training, duty so deeply ingrained it's become a part of me.

Lake City Stories
Book 2
Annie Nicholas
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Date of Publication: August 11, 2014
Word Count: 50,000 word
Cover Artist: Kanax
Book Description:
Pia Blyton, a succubus, isn’t ready for an official engagement since her skillset consists of setting kitchens on fire, singing at vampire hellholes, and most embarrassingly, she recently passed out in bed while feeding Valerio Hunan, the most eligible incubus in Lake City. Yet somehow he turns a blind eye to all her faults and still wants to set his marriage tattoos on her wrists.
The compulsion to have sex forces their people to have unconventional relationships. Every three days, she has to orgasm creating energy to survive. She can’t even live off bad sex. Unlike her, Val can’t feed off just anyone. He consumes the energy only a succubus creates and his hunger isn’t on a clock. Most incubi feed legally by luring multiple succubi into marriage with money and power. Val had caught Pia by the heart strings. Sneaky bastard.
When his food supply suddenly stops, he’s faced with starvation. Despite Pia’s adoration, she’s not an all you can eat buffet. He would suck her dry of all her life force within days. In order to save her, Val forces her to leave. With nowhere to go, Pia ends up at the last place she wants to be—her parent’s home, with nothing but her pink suitcase and a list of all her failures.
Pia needs to pull on her big girl panties and figure out why Val’s energy supplies have stopped arriving before he kills some unsuspecting succubus. But the demon inside Val is closer to the surface than either of them realize. When Pia leaves, the only thing on its mind is tracking her down and dragging her back into its bed where she belongs...even if it kills her.
John snatched my offending finger and kissed the tip. “You were worried?” A shy smile tugged at his lips. No fair.
I yanked my hand out of his grasp. “Of course I was. It’s not like I have suitors waiting in line.” My excuse for worrying sounded thin but I didn’t want to give John the wrong impression. Caring about my suitors was dangerous and falling in love against the rules. Emotional detachment had to be maintained to protect my fragile heart and to ensure my relationship with Val would work. For an incubus, he was oddly very possessive.
“You could have anyone you wanted. You just don’t—”
“Want to.” I finished the old argument between us.
“So.” He stared at his shoes. “You met my brother.”
“Yeah, I did. He wants to suck my soul out of my body like a juice box.” I set my hands on my hips and gazed out at my parent’s wooded property. Val was wandering out there under the bare branches. Somewhere.
“Sounds like Amel.” He twisted and followed my gaze. “Did he come looking for me here?”
“No, I used the locket you gave me last Winter Solstice.” I scowled and leaned closer so he couldn’t escape my glare. “You didn’t tell me that wasn’t your name.” When pressed the locket would say something and it turned out to be his brother’s name.
His shy smile became a grin. “I didn’t say it was either.” The dumbass’ smile faded. “Wait. You tried to summon me using that name?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh…”
“Yeah.” Instead of my sweet John appearing in the pentagram, his pissed off big bro showed up and let’s just say he wasn’t happy about it.
“The city is still intact. Did your father defeat him?”
My eyebrows shot up. Dad? Beat a Mazzikim demon? “No.” John feared my father like no one else. That he stood on our doorstep showed how much he wanted my forgiveness. But Dad wasn’t a warrior. Zur-Sin, my vampire suitor and co-ruler of Lake City, however was not only a warrior he also practiced black magic.
“How exactly are you still alive?” His whispered question took me by surprise.
“Sin blood bound him.”
The blood drained from John’s face.
Reflexively, I reached out and steadied him. “John, where have you been?”
“Yes, John, where have you been?” Val strolled around the corner of the house, hands in pockets, and looking quite warm in just a suit. Incubus powers?
I jumped at his voice, an undeserved wave of guilt crashing over me as I released my hold of John’s elbow. Our people didn’t practice love. They saw the emotion as a weakness and I could see their point. Falling in love with a human had almost killed me a few years ago. Sex equaled food for my people and fidelity couldn’t be part of the equation.
My parents managed to have a beautiful four-way loving relationship. Well, until now, with a fourth wife on the horizon. After being raised in such an environment why wouldn’t I crave to have the same? I smiled at Val and held out my hand.
He was willing to give me everything, even his heart, but unlike me he’d been raised in a cold, sterile traditional succubus household. He wanted to love me, he just didn’t know how.
When our hands touched, I half expected to see sparks of desire dance between our fingers. I met his pale blue stare and my stomach fluttered. Would he ever stop affecting me this way? “John, this is Val, my fiancé.” Valerio Hunan had recently moved to Lake City. After a whirlwind courtship over a few days, I agreed to an engagement. My stomach rolled as I recalled why he’d dragged me here today. He wanted my mothers to force me to pick a date so we could publically announce our families uniting.
We had only been living together for a few weeks. In a hotel room no less. His wives hated me. What was the rush?
“Fiancé? I thought you didn’t want to ever get married, Pia.” John’s gaze traveled from Val to me and back again.
“I’m beginning to believe the same thing.” Val murmured under his breath.
I could kick John where the sun didn’t shine. “Shut up. A lot’s changed since you left me high and dry on my day three. So why don’t you answer my question before I ask Val to drag your scrawny ass to your big brother.”
Character Name: Pia Blyton
Character Bio: Pia is a young succubus who had failed spectacularly at trying to live on her own when she went to college. It almost ended with her death and she came home broken. Now, she’s back on her feet and taking chances again with her heart. She wants it all—love, marriage, and family. It’s hard for a succubus to find these things when she can’t be physically monogamous.
Describe yourself what is your worst and vest quality?
My sense of style is my best quality. I can rock any pair of platforms and I never blend in with the crowd. My freaking curly hair is my worst. It has a life of its own and so far it’s winning the battle for dominance in my life.
What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?
That I’m trying my hardest to feed like a succubus should. It’s not easy when you want to fall in love.
What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?
That I wish I’d been born human. It’s not something I’m proud of but I can’t it. I think life would be easier.
What are you most afraid of?
That I’ll be forced to use a stranger to feed from and he’ll hurt me. It takes a lot of trust to drop your panties and sometimes my demon nature takes over and that side of me doesn’t care who I jump.
What do you want more than anything?
Someone to love me for who and what I am. It takes a strong man to able to share. That’s what I need. I can’t be monogamous. No matter how much I want to be. Been there, done that, and it almost killed me.
What is your relationship status?
Recently engaged to the hottest incubus in town. *high fives*
How would you describe your sense of fashion?
On the money.
How much of a rebel are you?
Uh…I guess to my people I’d be considered a rebel? I mean, they think falling in love is a weakness. Honestly, they’re more like to say I’m stupid than a rebel.
What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?
Getting my driver’s license without sleeping with the instructors. Take that, sisters.
What is your idea of happiness?
A hungry Valerio naked in bed with a jar of Nutella.
What is your current state of mind?
I don’t even know what that means.
What is your most treasured possession?
My family picture album. My parents are the best.
What is your most marked characteristic?
Curly, crazy hair that can only be tamed with enough hair products to bankrupt a small country.
What is it that you, most dislike?
Being treated like a sex object. Just because I have to feed off sex doesn’t mean I’m a slut or sex kitten. It’s not by choice.
Which living person do you, most despise?
Amel. He’s a demon who would like nothing more than to suck out my soul. He has reason to hate me though. I kinda accidentally gave his name to a black magic user and now Amel is a slave.
What is your greatest regret?
Ugh, I fell in love with a human. I tried to feed just from him and almost died. Not my best moment.
What is the quality you most like in a man?
Confidence. For me to feed, I have to orgasm so I can’t even survive off of bad sex. But it’s not all about the sex, I have to feel protected and cherished. It’s not easy finding a man who feels this way about a woman like me.
Which living person do you most admire?
My dad. Nobody would have thought an incubus could take over a city, but he came in by storm to make a safe place for his daughters to grow up. What’s not to admire?
If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I wish I could feed from my fiancé, Valerio. If we could just feed each other and just be together like a human couple that would be paradise.
What is your motto?
Blue and green should never be seen except in your mother’s washing machine.

Goodreads / Amazon

The figure emerged from the water. Clad in black, her lean legs ended in curved hips. Gentle swells under the rubber, a blue swim cap, goggles. Long red hair spilled out of her swim cap as she tugged it off. Water trailed down her cheeks. She reached under the bumper and withdrew something small and black. A high-pitched beep came from the car. The hatchback opened and the woman sat down on the edge of the trunk and stripped off her wetsuit. A green bikini covered a body that was too thin—almost as emaciated as his was—with a bluish tinge to her skin that he neither understood nor liked. She moved carefully, as if a sudden step or jerk would shatter her. Beautiful. The word came to the wolf, though he wasn’t even sure what it meant. He only knew that he wanted to get close to her.
The wolf sniffed from his hiding place. A storm of emotions washed over him, thunder in his ears, lightning against his skin, giving him a spark of energy to stumble closer under the bushes. Spring rain, coconut, almonds. Scents he recognized. Weakness. A bitter, bloody tang. It wasn’t him. It was coming from her. Dark smudges shadowed her eyes. Her lips were pale. Sick. She tugged on a pair of fleece pants and a sweatshirt over her skimpy bikini. Wool socks, shoes, and a towel around her wet hair were all added before she rose and hurried over to the building. She disappeared inside. She’d left the trunk open.
Instinct drove him forward, a pull he couldn’t ignore. Mine. It took him two tries to launch himself into her trunk. Blanket. Home. Safe. Good. Thoughts he didn’t understand raced through his battered mind.
Nothing made sense other than the deep feeling of safety that spread over him like the blanket he’d burrowed under. Pain stabbed at every part of him, but he didn’t care. Sleep.

Once that dam broke, the flood waters never receded. Patricia sits down to write every evening after dinner and quite often sees midnight come and go before she heads to bed. She doesn't sleep much. But she wouldn't have it any other way.
In her spare (HA!) time she runs, bikes, swims, yogas, pilates-es, reads, and is terribly addicted to Doctor Who and Sherlock. Apparently she has a thing for quirky British men.

Felicity Heaton
An elf prince on the verge of losing himself to the darkness, Vail is maddened by the forty-two centuries he was under the control of a witch and forced to war with his brother. Now, he roams Hell seeking an escape from his terrible past and the heads of all who bear magic. When demons of the Fifth Realm capture him, he sees a chance to end his existence, but when he wakes in a cell to a beautiful female, he finds not death but his only shot at salvation—his true fated mate.
Captured by the enemy of the Third Realm when the war ended, Rosalind has spent months in the cells of the Fifth Realm with her magic bound, forced to heal the new king’s demon warriors, and haunted by the lives she has taken. When she’s brought to heal an unconscious man, she discovers her only hope of escape has come in the form of her worst nightmare and the first part of a prediction that might spell her doom—a devastatingly handsome and dangerous dark elf prince.
Unwilling to fall under the control of anyone ever again, Vail must escape before the Fifth King can use him as a pawn in a deadly game of revenge, but he cannot leave without Rosalind, the woman who looks at him with dark desire in her stunning eyes and awakens a fierce hunger in his heart. A witch who drives him mad with need even as the darkness within whispers she will enslave him too.

Tempted by a Rogue Prince – Excerpt
Vail lay face down on the black ground, each hard breath stirring dust that choked him, fighting to muster the strength to push himself up and find his feet again. He pressed his hands into the sharp rocks but his muscles turned to water and his bones ached so fiercely his head swam with the pain. He squeezed his eyes shut and focused on breathing instead, but even that was a struggle now.
He tilted his head to one side and stared at his left hand as he curled his fingers into a fist, clawing at the dirt.
He couldn’t stay like this. He couldn’t give up. Even when he wanted to surrender and find an eternal end to his suffering. If he stayed like this, he would fall asleep and the hold the nightmares had on him would grow stronger. Those terrible memories overwhelmed him too often now, dragging him deeper into insanity, until he found it hard to distinguish between reality and the past.
He couldn’t sleep.
Vail gritted his teeth and growled as he pushed himself up, his arms shaking violently with the strain, causing his entire body to tremble and his heart to race from the effort. He snarled and kept pushing, refusing to give in to the lure of sleep. His arms gave out and he hit the dirt again. The taste of blood on his tongue mocked him. He would have been strong enough to stand if he had been feeding.
He didn’t want to eat.
He didn’t want to sleep.
He just wanted to keep walking.
He didn’t care where, as long as it was away from his past.
Vail shoved his hands against the sharp tiny rocks and grunted as he forced himself up, not relenting this time, pushing past the pain and the fatigue, and the weakness invading him. Sweat dotted his brow and trickled down his back beneath the skin-tight scales of his black armour, and white spots winked across his vision, the exertion threatening to render him unconscious and deliver him into the arms of the mad beast waiting within him. It wanted out.
It wanted blood and violence.
Retribution.
Vail managed to make it onto his knees and slumped, his breath sawing out of his lungs and his head spinning, sending the ugly world around him twirling with it.
He clawed at the ground, bloodying his fingertips, aching for the connection to the earth that this despicable land refused to give to him.
Nature hid here, buried deep, shying away from the darkness and the demons.
He longed to feel her again, to sense her warmth flowing through him and the peace that came with being connected to her.
He shifted onto his backside, crossed his legs with effort, and laid his hands in his lap. He couldn’t have the link to nature that he craved right now, but he could find a sliver of peace through a different connection.
The one with his older brother, Loren.
Vail closed his eyes as they stung, the bridge of his nose burning with them and his throat tightening. He shoved aside the pain and focused on his blood, on his brother, and lifted the barrier he normally kept in place between them, shutting Loren out and making it impossible for his brother to find him.
The connection bloomed between them like warm sunshine, infusing him with peace and calm, with the constant affection his brother held for him despite all his sins and all the pain he had caused him over the past four thousand two hundred years they had been at war.
Four thousand two hundred years in which Vail had been a slave to a dark witch, forced to do her bidding against his will, whether it was massacring innocents, igniting wars between kingdoms, attacking his brother and his people, or things that were far worse. Unmentionable.
He rubbed at his arms, subconsciously scrubbing the feel of her hands from his body, the sickening lingering touches and the caresses.
And the other things.
Cold engulfed him, darkness rising from the pit of his soul as his mind travelled black paths that led him downwards into madness. He clawed at his arms and his armour covered his fingers, transforming them into sharp serrated black claws.
Vail brought his hands up and clutched at his head, digging his claws in deep and drawing blood, using the pain in the present to battle that in his past. His fangs grew longer, stabbing into his lower lip, and his pointed ears flared back against the sides of his head.
The warmth inside him increased, chasing back the icy cold, and he trembled with relief.
Loren.
His brother was aware of him.
Reaching for him.
Tears spilled down Vail’s cheeks and he held the connection between them for as long as he could without risking Loren discovering his location, savouring it and using it to ground himself and anchor him to the present. The connection grew stronger, his brother reinforcing it from thousands of miles away, flooding him with love and affection, with memories of being with Loren back in their kingdom, and then even further back, to the old elf kingdom in the mortal realm, laughing like fools as they played as children in the lush colourful gardens of the castle.
Loren.
Vail severed the connection, swiftly bringing up the barrier to shut his brother out, unable to bear any more.
He clumsily stumbled onto his feet, almost falling on his face again when his knees turned to jelly beneath him, and staggered onwards, heading for the horizon.
The gods only knew where he was going. How many days had it been since he had seen his brother?
Since he had protected his brother’s sweet mate?
Since he had felt magic around him again and sensed the presence of a witch?
Vail snarled, his lips peeling back off his fangs. He should have killed her. His fingers flexed at the thought of shredding her flesh, peeling it from her bones slice by slice while she screamed for mercy. He had no mercy left in him. No goodness. No kindness. No hope. A witch had made sure of that.
A witch had made him the enemy of all her kind.
They all deserved to die.
For every life that witch had forced him to take, he would kill one of her own treacherous, vile breed. He would wipe out their entire species, freeing the realms of their trickery and magic.
His thoughts flickered back to that moment on the battlefield, when Loren had stood before him, offering his hand.
Gods, Vail had wanted to take it.
He had been so close to placing his hand into his brother’s one and taking the comfort he offered, the acceptance and forgiveness.
A small part of him had even dared to hope that he could return to the castle in the elf kingdom and things could be as they were before Kordula had enslaved him and he had turned on his people, making an enemy of himself in order to protect them all from her, thwarting her plan to set herself up as their queen and enslave them all.
A fool’s dream.
Vail shuffled forwards, barely able to place one foot in front of the other. His ankles wobbled with each step and his muscles screamed in protest. His stomach growled, hunger riding him hard, dragging up replays of battles where he had gorged himself on blood, making himself stronger.
He denied it, too lucid right now to give in to its demands and risk awakening the beast within him, but he knew there would come a time when he blacked out again and woke with the taste of blood on his tongue. Rather things happened that way than while he was conscious. He didn’t want to remember the terrible things he did. There wasn’t room in his soul for any more of them. It was filled with the hideous, despicable things he had done, so black with them that not a speck of light could penetrate it.
Turning.
Vail had seen elves turn. He had seen them degenerate into monsters, tainted by darkness, craving blood and violence.
He knew that his own turning was overdue. He should have become the embodiment of darkness millennia ago, his mind warped by the things Kordula had done to him, his soul blackened by the lives he had taken, and his body contaminated by the pleasure she had wrung from it.
Bile blazed up his throat. He collapsed onto his hands and knees and vomited, dry heaving until he shook all over and his heart laboured.
He meticulously blanked his mind, killing thought after thought, memory after memory, image after sickening image, until nothing remained but cold emptiness.
His heart settled.
He stared at the black earth and his vision swam out of focus.
He needed to stop thinking about the past. He needed to stop courting the darkness, leading it on a dance as it did the same to him, luring him ever deeper into the black abyss within his soul.
He needed to think about something else.
Vail dragged himself back onto his feet and trudged onwards, staring at the ground. He recited sonnets in his head, filling it with words to keep the shadows at bay.
The terrain grew hilly, challenging his limited strength on every ascent and his ability to maintain his balance on the descents.
At some point, he crossed a border.
Vail became aware of it the moment three large bare-chested demon males teleported in front of him. Warriors. They were mostly human in appearance, but the painted black tips of the grey horns that curled from behind their ears and their vivid green eyes warned him that he had wandered into dangerous territory.
The Fifth Realm.
The three demons advanced.
Vail stood his ground. There was little point in running, and he didn’t have the strength left to teleport or call his swords to him. He couldn’t even muster a telekinetic blast to drive them away from him.
They eyed him suspiciously.
The largest of them, a black-haired brute with a thick scar that cut a diagonal line across his muscular bare chest, stepped forwards and curled his lip.
“Elf.”
Vail bit back his desire to point out that the male was stating the obvious. No other creature in Hell shared the appearance of an elf, and none other had the black armour he wore.
His fangs itched with a need to sink into their flesh. It wouldn’t appease his hunger. Demon blood tasted wretched. Toxic.
The darkness in him began to push, filling his head with visions of attacking these three males. They couldn’t give him life through their blood, but they could give him something far sweeter. Something that had eluded him for so long now.
Death.
He snarled and launched himself at the leader, slamming into him and knocking him back into the other two. They immediately attacked him, pummelling him with powerful blows that only served to unleash his hunger for violence and bloodshed, giving it free rein. He turned and took on the weakest of the three, slashing across his chest with his claws and raking them down his arms, cleaving flesh and spilling blood. He laughed as the scent of it drove him onwards, pushing his fatigue to the back of his mind.
The demon blocked his next strike and delivered one of his own, a powerful punch that cracked the left side of Vail’s jaw and snapped his head to his right. His vision wobbled and pain blazed a path across his face, numbing it. The demon struck him again, harder this time, and Vail’s knees crumpled beneath him. Darkness encroached at the corners of his mind.
He shook it off and tried to shove to his feet, but large hands clamped down on his shoulders, two on each, and the third male grabbed his arms. Vail cried out as the leader twisted his arms behind his back, almost popping his shoulders out of their sockets with the force of his actions.
“We take him and put him with the others,” the leader growled in the demon tongue behind him. “The king will be pleased we have an elf. He will want to question him about the war and the Third Realm.”
They thought he was part of Loren’s army that had attended the war between the Third and Fifth Realms on the side of the Third, under the banner of King Thorne.
Vail struggled but it was useless. His strength gave way before he could wrestle himself free. The darkness rose within him again, the mad beast snarling for freedom, caged by his weak body just when he would have embraced it and used it to escape and goad these demons into killing him.
A black hole appeared beneath him and he dropped into it with the demons still holding him. They teleported him into a dark stone room that smelled of fetid things, the odour so foul that it choked his lungs.
“You think we should remove his armour?” one said and Vail growled and used all of his limited strength to fight their hold.
“It needs to go. He’s dangerous with it on.” The leader this time.
Vail shook his head and refused to relinquish it as the three demons set to work on him, trying to slip their fingers into the neck of the black scale-like armour. He snarled and mentally commanded it to form his helm, forcing their hands off him as the scales crawled up his neck. They thickened and smoothed as they covered the back of his head and chased across his forehead, forming a point above his nose and then sweeping back over the top of his head into a series of curved spikes that flared backwards like dragon horns.
“Get it off him.” The leader released his arms and pulled at his helmet, jerking his head with the force of his attempts.
Vail snapped and lashed out at him, catching him across his chest with his claws, adding more scars.
He wouldn’t let them take his armour. It was his only protection right now when he was so weak. As wrecked as it was because he didn’t have the strength to repair it, his claws were still intact and he needed this small connection to his people. His armour was his talisman. He had never been without it. He had always cherished it. It was his sole connection to his past.
To better days.
It kept him sane.
The leader grabbed a heavy black club and swung it at him. It connected hard with his left arm, fracturing the bone. One of the others followed his leader, picking up another of the clubs. Vail ground his teeth and desperately blocked their blows, snarling through his fangs as they beat him, stripping away the last of his strength as his tired body began to give out under the pain and damage.
The third demon, the one he had mercilessly clawed, punched him square in the face, breaking his nose. Blood streamed over his lips. His vision distorted. No. He couldn’t pass out. He couldn’t give in.
His mental link to his armour fragmented. He managed to muster the strength to call a pair of black trousers to encase his lower half before the scales peeled away, rapidly running over his body, and disappeared into the twin black and silver metal bands around his wrists.
Vail collapsed onto the dirty slick stone flags, a black void rising up to swallow him.
The last thing he heard was the leader ordering the others to take him to the cells and have him healed.
Healed.
He snarled, but barely squeezed the sound out from between his bloodied lips before he sank into the black void, into nightmares filled with horrific replays of Kordula and the cruelty she had inflicted upon him, a torture of mind, body and soul.
Vail swore an oath.
If this healer was a sorceress…
He would kill her.

The soul eating Reapers have been a plague upon the Earth, stealing souls and leaving the Keepers as the only thing that stands between Heaven and Hell. The factions despise each other and have warred for generations.
Then Lucy discovers an ancient legend predicting the arrival of the Chosen One, destined to bring forth an end to the Reapers. The surprises continue when she realizes she is that person. For Lucy, being the Chosen One doesn’t change much. Fighting Reapers is just another day in the life of a Keeper.
When she meets Jack Walker, they both realize they have an insane, mutual attraction. Too bad that he’s been sent to prevent the prophecy from coming true. His only mission: to kill the Chosen One.

The scent of lilacs floated on the breeze, along with the heavy stench of perfume and cologne, reminding Lucy of the fragrance aisle in a department store.
Lucy stood beside the grave, dressed in a modest royal blue sundress. She had chosen it specifically because her father always said the color looked the best against her hair, which was a mix of reddish brown that shone burgundy in the sunlight.
Tilting her head up, Lucy looked through the canopy of the aging oak trees that were scattered throughout the cemetery. The breeze shifted the branches, causing a few of the leaves to pull free and flutter off into the wind. There were almost no clouds in sky, allowing the sun to shine down over the funeral.
Her brothers and sisters surrounded the open grave opposite of her. All six of them also wore something fitting for a funeral, but nothing depressing enough to send their father into a rage in his afterlife.
Smiling, Lucy remembered the argument she and her father had during his last moments. “Lucy!” he had shouted at her. “Don’t you dare let them bury me in a suit. I am not going to spend eternity in a stuffy ass business suit. Make sure I’m wearing my khaki shorts and a Hawaiian shirt because I’m going on the vacation of a lifetime.”
That was toward the end, when the cancer was so bad that her dad spent most of his time in bed, moaning about how he should be up and about doing something. They both knew that the end was near, but Lucy had cried only in private. Her father wanted her to be happy he was moving on to the next life, but she couldn’t understand in what way, shape or form, his dying was a good thing.
So she shed her tears alone in her room until there were no more left to cry.
The fog of the memory lifted from Lucy’s mind and she looked across the grave at her brothers and sisters. The entire brood of Estmond siblings were born with the same color hair as Lucy had been blessed with. Each of them, as well as Lucy and Ethan, held a white rose in one hand. Later, before the grave was sealed, they would each take a turn throwing one down onto the casket, as a symbol of their wish for their father’s peaceful journey into the afterlife.
Just behind her brothers and sisters stood the mourners who came to pay their last respects. Most of them were town’s people whom they had grown up with, except for one group who stood close together, most of them around her father’s age. These were the Keepers whom her family had been closest to over the years. She could see Gloria and Edward White, the Keepers from one of the Napa Valley graveyards standing solemnly beside Ellen and Stanly Evans, who worked in the hospital in Santa Rosa. There were several other Keepers surrounding them who she recognized and made a note to speak to them later.
Beyond them, further out into the trees, the spirits began to show themselves. They appeared in the form of their human bodies, a bit transparent, but solid for the most part. It was harder to see in the daylight, but their misty blue auras swirled around them, helping form the solidity of their bodies.
The spirits were fascinated by funerals. When Lucy was little she used to think that they wanted to say goodbye to someone, but really it was because there wasn’t much else to do in a graveyard except talk to each other and attend burials.
Pastor Brown spoke solemnly, saying kind words and telling her father’s life story. Inwardly, Lucy cursed her father for choosing Pastor Brown, a man who had not known her father and she was sure didn’t give a flying fuck about him either. Her father hadn’t set foot in church since he was a child. Not because he didn’t believe in God, he just didn’t believe in organized religion.
Sensing her tension, Ethan squeezed her hand reassuringly. Turning to her left she looked up and met her best friend’s eyes through the tint of his sunglasses. Even through the dark lenses she could see the sorrow in his eyes. He had loved her father too, just as much as any one of the Estmond clan. In response, she squeezed his hand back and then turned back to stare at the grave again.
“And now, Lucy Mae, Gregory’s youngest child, will say a few words about her father.” The preacher cleared his throat, signaling to Lucy that it was time.
Lucy had no tears staining her face. She had cried all those tears long before the day of the funeral. Again, Ethan gave her hand a gentle squeeze and then released her so that she could reach down and withdraw the folded piece of yellow legal paper out of her miniscule handbag.
As Lucy unfolded the paper she felt like it was taking an eternity.
This day is never going to end.
Finally, the paper was open in front of her and she began.
“I know that this speech is going to sound like the speeches given for so many others who have passed on. But, when someone we love dies, we all feel pretty much the same way … so here it goes. My father, Gregory Estmond, was the best person I’ve ever known. Today, we stand here, not to mourn him, but to celebrate him. He didn’t want any one of us to be sad that he was gone. Because … he isn’t gone. He will always be with us. For those of us who spent each day with him, his teachings and his love will always be with us. He taught us love, he taught us respect, he taught us of our family heritage, and he taught us how to live.
“For those who are acquaintances of my father, you may have met him only once and you are here because he impacted you in some way.”
A few nods came from the crowd.
Lucy continued. “He had that effect on people because he had a genuine love and respect for human life. Which is not something all of us can say we have. He treated everyone the same, with kindness.
“Because my father had cancer, he knew that this day was coming and he had time to prepare for it. We had many discussions and the one thing he consistently told me was to embrace life. He didn’t say this because he was dying, it was his mantra. This man lived every day of his life like it may be his last. He didn’t wait until he was dying to find the beauty in this world or the people in it. He was always this way.
“Remember my father, not with sadness, but with the memories he left behind. Remember him with love, with laughter and knowing that he is exactly where he wants to be.”
Lucy stepped back, reaching out for Ethan to grasp her hand once again. She eyed her siblings, none of them were crying either. Daniel, the second oldest son, reached into his gray trench coat and pulled out a silver flask. Lucy sighed and watched as her brother didn’t even try to hide it and took a long pull of the whiskey she knew was inside.
Sadly, as inappropriate as her brother was being, she couldn’t help but wish she could take a giant swig off that flask too.
It’s almost over.
“Would anyone else like to say a few words?” Pastor Brown offered.
Sherriff Davis stepped forward, he had his Stetson clutched in one hand and hitched up his gun belt with the other. As always he was wearing his uniform. The Sheriff and her father had been pretty close … well, as close as a Keeper can get to someone without that someone thinking that they are out of their mind.
“I’d like to, if that’s all right.” The Sheriff looked down into the grave before his eyes swept across the crowd of mourners. Finally his eyes met Lucy’s and she flashed him a smile meant to encourage him to proceed.
“Greg was my friend … and an old grump like me doesn’t have many friends. Greg knew a lot of people in this town, but I feel damn sorry for anyone who lives here and never had the chance to meet him. No one, aside from my own wife, Darcy, could make me laugh like Greg could. He was loyal and respectful, even if he was a bull shitter. Good grief that man liked to tell stories. Also, any man who can raise a brood of children by himself and manage to keep them all out of jail is a good man in my book.”
Lucy could have sworn that she heard Principal Robertson blow air between his lips like he was blowing a raspberry. A few people looked his way and then back at Sheriff Davis.
“That is all I got.” Sheriff Davis stepped back into the crowd.
Evelynn Andrews, the librarian at the Summer Hollow library, raised her hand slightly. She was about seventy years old, but didn’t look a day over fifty five. Lucy hoped she would age that well as the years progressed.
Evelynn pushed her glasses up her nose and closed her eyes for a moment before she began to speak. “I don’t think I can say much more about how wonderful Gregory was, but I wanted to make sure to pay my respects by voicing them. I’ve known the Estmond family all the way back to when Kathleen was still alive, as far back as when she and Greg were high school sweethearts. No one, could have been a better father to these children. Sure, they have caused a fair amount of ruckus over the years, but he did it all on his own and they are educated, mostly well behaved.”
She paused to glance at Daniel who had decided that moment would be appropriate for another pull from his flask. “And above all, Greg gave these children a sense of loyalty. Anyone who knows these kids knows that if you mess with one, you get the whole bunch of them.”
A few people giggled, even Lucy, knowing how true that statement really was.
“This may not seem like a good thing in retrospect, but a family who stays together so closely is a rare thing these days. It is to be cherished. Greg gave them this sense of family and that is something to be proud of.” As she finished, she closed her eyes again looked Pastor Brown.
“Would anyone else like to speak?” Pastor Brown addressed the crowd of mourners.
Unexpectedly, Ethan released Lucy’s hand and raised it up a little bit. “I need to say something.”
Pastor Brown nodded and held his hand out beside him. Ethan moved over to the other side of Lucy beside the pastor. “There are very few people here who don’t know who I am.” Ethan began. “Gregory Estmond took me under his wing a long time ago, when Lucy and I were both very little. My parents, who have moved away now…”
He paused and took a breath, pondering if he should let out the deep dark family secrets. Well, secrets that the whole town knew anyway. That was how small towns worked.
“They were, drug addicts and alcoholics who barely took care of me. Greg came by the house one day to see my parents for some reason and what he found was a little boy locked in his room with no food or water and his parents passed out in their bedroom surrounded by drugs and trash. The story is a long one, a long sad story. But it ended with Greg and the rest of the Estmonds making sure I always had a place to go, that I always had food. Greg even went so far as to pay me for making good grades, just to give me incentive to do well in school.”
Lucy grimaced as he told the story, hating Ethan’s parents for what they did to him. Ethan had conveniently left out the part about how her father had beat the ever living snot out of Ethan’s dad that day he found him locked up in his room half starved. It was hard to believe Ethan’s parents came from a Keeper line, but sadly, not all Keepers were immune to addiction. Keepers were human, just like everyone else.
Ethan scanned the crowd through his glasses. “No one, except for maybe the Estmond kids, owes more, or loves that man, more than I do. He saved me and I will never forget that. I hope that none of you ever forget that either.”
Ethan lowered his head and hurried back to Lucy. She immediately took his hand again, knowing how hard it must have been for him to say all that in front of everyone. He never spoke about his parents. They moved away when he was fourteen and left him alone in the house. After that he came to live with the Estmonds for good. She and Ethan were friends long before the incident at Ethan’s house, but after he came to live with them, they were inseparable.
Pastor Brown closed up the ceremony with a prayer and then the bagpipes started on Amazing Grace. Lucy stepped forward with Ethan’s hand firmly in her grasp and looked down into the dark, deep hole where her father’s body would spend eternity. Luckily, she knew better than most that his soul would not remain in that body.
She held the white rose firmly over the grave. “I wish you peaceful passage.” She released the rose and it drifted down into the depths of the hole. “I love you, Daddy.”
Ethan mimicked her actions, familiar with the meaning of the ceremony from the many deaths of Keepers past. Her siblings had moved into a line directly behind her and Ethan, tossing their roses in as well.
The other mourners milled about, giving Lucy and the family some time before they headed over to her house for the wake. She caught sight of Gloria and Ellen chatting beside the giant wreath of flowers with her father’s picture inside. She wandered over to say hello. “Gloria, Ellen, it’s been so long since I’ve seen you.”
Gloria smiled, as did Ellen. “Yes dear,” Gloria greeted her. “It has been some time. I’m sorry we couldn’t make it sooner.”
“Or under better circumstances.” Ellen added.
Lucy nodded. “Well, I’m just glad that you could make it here now. I’m sure my father would be happy that you are here now.”
Gloria and Ellen nodded, they made a bit more small talk and then Ethan appeared beside her. “I think we had better get over to the house now.” He whispered just loudly enough for the older ladies to hear.
“Oh,” Lucy checked her watch deliberately. “You are absolutely right. I’m sorry ladies, I need to get some things ready over at the house.”
Gloria smiled again, a loving gentle smile of someone she had known her entire life. “You go on dear, we will see you over there.”
With a quick ‘see you later,’ Lucy backed away and then turned to join hands with Ethan again. “Thanks for saving me. I didn’t really want to talk to them, but I had to make sure to say hello to them.”
“You doing all right?” Ethan asked, rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb.
Lucy nodded. “I’m fine.” She turned her head to try and see his eyes through the dark tint of his glasses. “How bout you. Are you all right?”
He twisted his lip up a little and she knew he was giving slight eye roll. “I’ll survive. I just miss him and all this,” he gestured to the crowd, “actually makes it harder.”
She nodded again. “I know what you mean. I feel the same way.” Her gaze strayed from the grave and focused on her house. Their home sat on the edge of the cemetery, separated from the dead by a white picket fence and about thirty yards of grass. The yellow farmhouse had been in their family for several generations, and now it was hers, as was the family business.
“Let’s head over.”
She nodded. Of course they had to get to the house. But, it wouldn’t be for relaxing. There was food to get out and serve. People would come up to her and tell her how sorry they were for her loss, or how much her father meant to them, or some awesome memory they had of him. It was going to be a very long afternoon.
Almost over, she told herself again. Almost over.

Hey everyone! Keeper vs. Reaper was a very music driven book to write. There were so many songs that helped bring this work to life. I actually have a playlist for it on my Spotify account, but I will list ten of my favorite songs here for you so that you can check them out too. 1. House on a Hill by The Pretty Reckless: This song was literally on repeat for so many scenes. I don’t know what it is about this song that just brought out the pain and love and personality of my characters. 2. Demons by Imagine Dragons: One of my two main characters, Jack, is a man who has many demons inside and this song was one of his. 3. Put the Gun Down by ZZ Ward: This song one of my favorite to use for stand off scenes. 4. Playing for Keeps by Elle King: Love this song. It talks about how the reaper is playing for keeps and I just found that inspirational. 5. What Ya Gonna Do by Hinder: Yet another song dedicated to Jack, who loves to drown himself in his own sorrows. 6. Let Her Go by Passenger: Normally not my style of music, however, this song was perfect for a scene in the book and I listened to it on repeat until the scene was complete. When you read the book you will know which one. J 7. Times are Hard by Redlight King : My daughter always tells me I listen to the most depressing music when I write, and I have to admit that I do. This is another melancholy, yet awesome song. 8. Your Winter by Sister Hazel: I know, I know, another soft and sad song! Sorry … 9. Freak Like Me by Halestorm: There, a not soft and sad song. I love Halestorm and this song was awesome for writing some of the more fun scenes in Keeper vs. Reaper. 10. Till the Casket Drops by ZZ Ward : Well, this one isn’t soft and sad, but it’s not exactly a perky song either. I used this for the funeral scene at the beginning of the book. Okay, there you have ten of my favorite songs on my Keeper vs. Reaper playlist. You can also look me up on Spotify as Jennifer Malone Wright.

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
Yes, I have always wanted to be a writer, ever since I was little. Well, for a while I may have wanted to be a princess, but that didn’t last long.
When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?
I have always considered myself a writer. I don’t think that having a book published is what makes a person a writer, it is the words inside of you, begging to get out that make you a writer.
How long did it take to get your first book published?
I made a well-researched decision to self-publish my first book in 2010.
Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?
I am a full time author and a mother of five. I am one of those Suzy homemaker type wives too, so those are my jobs aside from writing.
What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?
My newest book is called Keeper vs. Reaper. This book is about the Keepers, who guard the souls, keeping them safe from the soul eating Reapers.
Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?
I am self-published. Go Indie!
How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
Eh, it really depends. It took me years to write my first book and a few months to write Keeper vs. Reaper. It really just depends on what is going on in my life at the time.
What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
The Graveyard Guardians series is mapped out into a nine book series, so you can expect that for sure. I also have more zombie, vampire, and fairytale fiction on the way.
What genre would you place your books into?
I usually tell people I write paranormal. But, my Vampire Hunter’s Daughter series is YA, while Keeper vs. Reaper definitely is not.
Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?
I am in love with my main male character, Jack Walker … I dare you not to fall in love with him too. He is the bad boy that we all want in our bed heart. J
Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?
I am up and down all day long chasing kids. I have no routine, so I just write when I can get some time.
Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?
I try really hard not to. Recently, my husband and I sat down and bonded over the lovely 1 star reviews on my Vampire Hunter’s Daughter series.
Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?
I almost never pick the title first, but then again, it just depends.
How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?
I pick first names based on what I like, but last names usually have a deep meaning. For example, Lucy Estmond, Estmond means gracious protector or guardian is English or Indian in origin.
Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?
I usually try to map it out before hand, it’s easier to keep track of that way, but a lot of the time the characters build themselves along the way.
Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?
I like paperbacks, but I’m learning to love my kindle. It’s very convenient and easy to pack around with me.
Your favorite food is?
Any kind of Mexican food.
Your favorite singer/group is?
I can’t ever pick one favorite, there are too many.
Your favorite color is?
Purple
Your favorite Author is?
Again, there are too many so I can’t pick only one. J

She resides in the beautiful mountains of northern Idaho with her husband and five children where she practices preparing for the zombie apocalypse. Just kidding!
But seriously, between the craziness of taking care of her children, Jennifer has little time left for herself. The time she does have left, usually leading far into the night, is spent working on her beloved fiction or chatting with her equally crazy friends.
Jennifer also loves coffee, has a passionate affair with red bull, wishes the sushi were better where she lives and dances while she cleans.
