Freedom, Liberty, Justice, and Equality

Today I went to the post office and ordered a book of stamps. They cost $9.00 for a book of 20. This made me think back to my younger years when stamps cost .25 cents each that’s $5.00 for a book of 20. Wow! Hasn’t inflation took it’s course. I left out the post office and went to my car. I sit down and looked at my stamps. They had an American flag of them with different words on each stamp. One had FREEDOM. This made me think about my ancestors who once was slaves and had to fight for their FREEDOM. My great grandfather parents were slaves and he was sold when he was a toddler. He didn’t remember his parents nor did he know their names. Another stamp had LIBERTY. I begin to contemplate the definition of LIBERTY, which is to have control over your own actions, or the state of being free from restriction or control in addition, to have political and economical rights, although I do feel we as Americans have a fraction of liberty more then most countries, we do not have full liberty so why put it on a stamp and exasperate the truth. As my eyes rolls further across the stamps, I see one that reads JUSTICE. In my mind I think justice for who? For anyone with blond hair and blue eyes, not that I am racist in anyway one of my best friends has blond hair and blue eyes. All I am trying to say is the Hitler standard set in the 1900’s still exist. The darker your skin the more you are hit with racist remarks and staring eyes in stores. Although America has come a loooong way, we still have room for growth, we have yet to arrive at the finish line. The last stamp in the bunch read EQUALITY. I believe as long as we stay in the race for EQUALITY we will one day achieve it. We may never achieve full LIBERTY and JUSTICE but I do believe we should be grateful for the LIBERTY and JUSTICE GOD had given us.

Review for Gabriel’s Rapture by Sylvain Reynard

Gabriel's Rapture (Gabriel's Inferno, #2)Gabriel’s Rapture by Sylvain Reynard

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another grand masterpiece by Sylvain Reynard. Gabriel and Julia are madly in love. They leave Florence and arrive back at school with enemies. Christy files a formal complaint saying that Julia (a student)  got involved with Gabriel (a instructor) for favors. They must go before the college board and give their case. Sylvain takes us on an emotional journey into a relationship where there are ups and downs and everything is not perfect. Although this book is not as good as the first, it is still a good read and I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Racist Palm Beach County Sheriff patrolman

Today, I cried a million tears, not because I nor anyone I knew was physically hurt. It was because I was emotionally damaged from the prejudice of a Palm Beach County Sheriff patrol, R. Mitchell.  My husband and I were driving down Westgate Ave on our way to get breakfast. Suddenly lights flashed on a silver Dodge Charger. We pulled over wondering what the problem was; we wasn’t speeding and the light was green. “What’s going on ran thought our minds?” The officer walked up to the car with his hand on his gun and asked for both license and insurance. I couldn’t believe that he asked for my license I wasn’t driving plus I didn’t have my license on me, I had lost it the day before. I asked the officer “what going on” and he replied he was giving both me and my husband a $116 ticket for failure to wear seat beat. This amazed me because my seat belt was on and had been on the whole time. At that point, I become very upset and I told the officer I am wearing a seat belt. Instead he insisted on me giving him my ID. I felt like a common criminal. I couldn’t comprehend why this officer would be so rude to me. I begin to think, “is it this silver chevy monte Carlo with 22’ rims that made this officer assume that my husband and I are criminals or could it be because we are black.” I then asked the officer “what if I refuse to give you my ID; I didn’t do anything wrong”, if you don’t count riding while black. He commented, “I  will arrest you”. At this point I was filled with rage, my heart pounded hard and fast. I called my father a mayor in Louisiana and I asked him, “Is this true, can this officer really make me give him my ID when I was doing anything and I was wearing my seat belt?” “He firmly told me “Cooperate, he has the upper hand”. I cooperated, I didn’t have my license but I did have a old Louisiana ID that I gave the officer. Next he asked for my social security number. At this point I told the officer you are racial profiling. He didn’t listen. He walked back to his car and stayed there for 5-10 minutes. I am sure he ran our license plates and he seen that neither one of us has any warrants or tickets. He did came back and issued three tickets, two seat belt tickets and one because my husband couldn’t find his car insurance paper. I begin to shake, I am getting a ticket for not wearing my seat belt when I was wearing it. My husband whispered to me, this is America. I cried for hours, I felt sad because I thought racism was behind us. My ancestors fought so hard for colored people to have equal rights and today on an cold November day, their hard work blew in the wind and if  Jim Crow would have been real he would be looking down smiling thinking his partner in crime for making my husband and I feel like second class citizens.

Book Review for The Book Thief

The Book ThiefThe Book Thief by Markus Zusak

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Markus Zusak shows us the power of words in The Book Thief. Words from a man craving power from the world. Words from a Jewish man who must hide in a basement for his safety. Words from a young girl whose life is forever changed by death. First the death of her brother on a train then the death of everyone she loves. Death is actually the narrator of the story and he takes us on a journey thought the young girl (Liesel Meminger, also known as the The Book Thief) life in Nazi Germany.

She goes to live with a family because her mother can no longer afford to take care of her. Her brother dies on the train ride to the new family. Liesel is delivered broken hearted and full of sorrow to Himmel street. Himmel means Heaven but Himmel street is nothing like heaven. It is a street made up of poor families but here is where Liesel Meminger the Book Thief learns the power of words. Her foster Papa teaches her to read and she become a lover of books. The first book she steal is an handbook to grave diggers, she steals it at her brother’s funeral. The next book is a Jewish book that the Nazi party was trying to burn. The Book Thief really captures your heart and takes you back to a real time of the past. Where a race of people was treated worse then animals. As you read, you will laugh, cry, and thank God you didn’t have to endure the hardship of Hitler and Nazi Germany.

Dedicated to Writers’ and Artist

Sometimes writing can be very challenging to authors. Getting bad reviews can be very discouraging. A few weeks ago, I received my first bad review. My heart dropped to the ground as I read the words from the review. One bad review out of many awesome 4 and 5 star reviews cause my day to shatter. Then I though of Vincent Van Gogh, he only sold 1 painting during his lifetime and only became famous after his death. He would be amazed if he was alive today and could see how much his painting sold for. Albert Einstein was thought of as dumb in school, he was even told he would have a descent career; today Einstein is and will always be known as a genius. The father of Relativity. Abraham Lincoln ran for congress twice and lost, ran for senator and lost after many years he became president. He never give up, he had great persistence. My father Curtis McCoy, I  remember when I was a little girl he ran for sheriff and lost. He did not give in to defeat , the next term he ran again and lost. A few years went by and then he ran for mayor. His determination paid off. He became the first african american mayor in Mansfield, LA.

This blog post is dedicated to writers and artist. Don’t get discouraged by negativity but believe in yourself. Write from the heart and write because you love it and everything else will fall in place. I wish all my fellow writers’ and artist the best, may your words and vision shine forever in the light of the world.

The Twelve by Justin Cronin Book Review

The Twelve (The Passage, #2)The Twelve by Justin Cronin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Twelve by Justin Cronin is the longest book I have ever read. It is over 500 pages of pure intrigue. The Twelve is actually a sequel to The Passage, an apocalyptic thriller. If you are a fan of The Walking Dead, you will definitely like The Twelve. I was unable to put the book down, every second of spare time I got I was reading, now a week and a half later I am finish. A tale of survival between humans and blood sucking virals. The struggle between good and evil. Each page drew me in more. I never knew what I would read with each page turn. Trust me this book is a MUST read. Imagine living in a world where you never know when yuor last breath may be, you must stay in at night and live within the confided walls of a small city. Outside these walls lies great dangers especially if you are not trained military you will be sure to die by the virals or get captured by the half virals that uses humans as thier work horse or uses them for sex. If it wasn’t for Goodreads giveaways I would have never even picked up this book; now I am a Justin Cronin fan.
