Excerpt from Summer’s Nightmare by Ingrid Jennings
If you like mystery, suspense, and romance, this might be the book for you.
Gunshots pierces the summer’s air. One after another raining in my direction. The thunderous sound of the shots bounced off the sun bleached tomb I hid behind in St. Louis cemetery. My head against the engraved name Marie Laveau and the dates 1794-1881. “Sauve-moi chère reine” (save me dear queen), “accorde-moi le désir” (grant me a wish), I whispered to the dead woman hoping her spirit would hear my cries and rain pity from above. Tears gathered in my eyes, ready to pour down and drown whatever got in their path. Inhaling for courage, the musty air filled my lungs. I took my husband’s jackknife out of my pocket, my fingered rubbed across his engraved initials CJ, I unfolded the blade and punctured my left pointer finger and then marked 3 X’s in blood on Marie Laveau’s tomb. Something in me expected and needed a supernatural phenomenon to occur. I wished magic could befall my presence. My tears become like waterfalls as they fell down my cheeks then soaked my shirt, my body laid motionless, arrested by the fear of the unknown. All I could hear was bullets showering the air. Certain this was my last minute of life, I just laid in the dark night at the foot of Marie Laveau’s tomb. I hoped our souls would cross.

Happy Birthday Maya Angelou (April 4th 1928)
With Maya Angelou birthday being right around the corner; I decided to pay tribute to a author that has inspired me since I was a child. A lot can be learned from Maya Angelou and her journey though life. She started at the bottom and raised to the top in a time where it was hard for African Americans. Below you will find a quick bio of Maya Angelou’s life and accomplishments.
MAYA ANGELOU A GREAT
AMERICAN POET
Maya Angelou was born in April 4th 1928 and was given the names Marguerite Johnson. Her birth place was the State of Missouri, City of St. Louis. Her birth parents were Bailey (Her father) and Vivian Baxter (Her Mother).
Her older brother; Bailey named her Maya. Throughout her life, Maya Angelou’s career as a writer extends beyond just simple poetry as she successfully penned two biographies, a number of television shows, several plays and successfully appeared on a number of Broadways plays that were critically acclaimed.
I know Why the Caged Birds (Written in 1969)
This piece is by far one of the most famed Maya Angelou’s work. The follow up autobiography (Gather Together in My Name) followed later in 1974. These two pieces tell a story of Maya’s upbringing and the troubles that she and her brother faced all through their childhood. In the 1930′s her parents divorced. Maya and her brother Bailey was sent to live with their grandparents, in Stamps, Arkansas. In 1940, Maya and her brother Bailey relocated to San Francisco California where they went to live with their now remarried mother Vivian.
As it was expected, Maya noticed that her life in San Francisco was very different from the one she had endured in the Deep South. In this new place African Americans had more rights and their treatment was a little more respectful. At the age of 16, Maya gave birth to her son (Guy Johnson).
Life Struggles
After the birth of her son, Maya started job hopping and worked at several places doubling up as a fry cook, night club dancer and a bartender. But after she asked for advice from her mother, Maya joined the Army.During her stint in the army, Maya was able to receive a better education and was able to learn discipline.
Writing and Acting Career
In 1952, Maya Angelou began her writing and acting careers which took off immediately. In 1954 Maya was part of the acting crew that showcased “Porgy and Bess”. The play was so successful that it went on a 22 nation tour sponsored by the State Department. After the end of the tour Maya was off to Broadway where she appeared and performed in a number of plays such as the Cabaret for Freedom that she helped write.
Thanks to her relentless support of civil rights, Christians from the Southern Christian Leadership went ahead and appointed her (Maya Angelou) as the Coordinator of their movement in the Northern side, a position she held until when she moved to the Motherland (Africa) in the early 1960s.
From 1961 to 1962, Maya Angelou took up the position of associate editor on the Arab Observer (English Language Weekly in Cairo Egypt). She wrote for the Ghana Times and served as the assistant administrator of the School of Music and Drama in the University of Ghana.
Her Plays and Books
After having written successful plays, Maya penned her two autobiographies and she published her book I Know Why the Caged Birds Sing that went on to be nominated for the National Book Award. Up to the year 1986, Maya Angelou wrote several poems and several other books.
Some of her famous poetry volumes includes:
Just Give Me A Cool Drink Of Water ‘Fore I Die (Written in 1971)
Oh I Pray My Wings Are Gonna Fit Me Well (Written in 1975)
Shakers, Why Do You Sing (Written in 1983)
Now Sheba Sings The Song (Written in 1987)
I Shall Not Be Moved (Written in 1990)
Wouldn’t Take Nothing For My Journey Now (Written in 1993)
The Complete Collected Poems of Maya Angelou (Written in 1994)
A Brave and Startling Truth (1995)
A Song Flung Up TO Heaven (2002)
As a play writer, poet, and a writer, Maya Angelou has impacted the literature and drama in the United States and the world at large as her influences can still be felt in many parts of the world today! Alot can be learned from Maya Angelou and her life.

Struggling Bastard Poetry
Poetry by Ingrid Jennings
The pain on my soul scrambles my thoughts
into fuming desires blazing in my body ready to
take hold of all sins from hell.
Fighting though fatigue, I cry out for The Lord.
Satan answers quite quickly devouring my
anguish, feeding off my demonic ravings.
Receive me dear Lord!
Answer my call!
Feeding myself childish rhymes and lullabies to
remove satans grip from around my heart.
Inhaling a rose, I exhale snake debris.
Approaching slowly the hem of God
Just one touch,
It’s all I need!
One touch and I’m freed.

Past, Present, Future Poetry
Past, Present, Future

Just write about the good, the bad,
The lingering pain stewing in my soul
Just write and hope it someday
Diminishes
Hope time heals the wounds of a broken soul.
Hope love will conquer all
But in the mean time while hope is brewing…..
Do I lie in bed and sheds tears of heartache
Do I hold my breath and wait to exhale.
Do I commit mental sucide by drowning in my thoughts.
This is how it is, will be, the present,
The emotional hill of torment
So I sit here in the present in the presence of spirits whispering softly spoken dreadful dark murderous words in my ears.
I try to tune them out, I try at peace but vengeful souls know not how to rest.
Covering my ears I harness good memories, my best memories, mediateing on how life can be.
A future of hope
Of new beginnings
Without the drowning memories of the past or vengeful spooks of the present. I lay down my knife, I cover my wrists, I decide to wait and see what the future behold.

History of Poetry
There is a pleasure in poetic pains / Which only poets know.
– William Cowper
A brief look at the history of poetry. Poetry is a form of communication that predates literacy itself. Original poetic form was a device that was created to remember oral history, stories, the law and genealogy. Poetry was expressed in song as well as special spoken word patterns. Poetry eventually became expressed in a musical format and give way to more classical styles of music throughout history.
Many ancient works including some of the most famous writings of our time were produced in some form of poetic form so that they could be easily spread and memorized in ancient societies. Before the printing press and before stories could be mass-produced, providing the storyteller with some type of memory device for telling a story was a very popular way to ensure that the story could be shared. Ancient works such as the Odyssey and more have poetic fragments that made it much easier to remember passages within the stories.
One of the oldest surviving columns was written around 4500 BC. It was composed in the language of hieratic and the title of the poem was called The Tail of The Shipwrecked Sailor. It is truly amazing that this poem still survives to this day at a testament to the memory device that was created by poetry.
Poetry evolved into a number of different styles throughout the ages.
Classical Poetry:
Classical poetry includes some of the ancient poetry as well as traditional Chinese poems and songs from the tent and seventh century. These poems were created to tell oral history and ensure that stories of the age were remembered correctly without having a need for literacy.
Modern Rhythmic Poetry:
This type of poetry was mostly to aid teaching devices and memory. In the 13th century this type of torture was created to remember the names of the months, the alphabet and more. These types of poetry were mostly to teach basic skills and functions rather than to spread oral history and traditions. Rhythmic poetry would quite often take the form of song and because of the rhythm and music it made it much easier to remember for people of this age.
Lyric Poetry:
Greek poetry made leaps and bounds in the sixth century BC by using complex choruses and hymns to produce dramatic verses and poetic plays. Many of these poetic performances were produced for playhouses and performance poetry. Quite often epic tales would be created and oral history would be shared using these types of poetry. Lyric poetry is still quite popular today.
Poetry Today:
Poetry today has changed significantly and many poets are using the Internet as a medium to reach new audiences. Because we can share in easier than ever before. Causing new poets to emerged each and every day, producing content on blogs and websites for all to see. Some poets still traditionally publish their work in novels and anthologies as well.
If you enjoy reading poetry check out my book of poetry titled Slopjar. It is full of soul touching poetry that will capture your heart’s attention.
Poetry is truth in its Sunday clothes.
– Joseph Roux
Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity.

Jane Doe
Jane Doe
Rosy cheeks,
Teary eyes,
Sorrow drenched heart,
Why oh why,
Did he cause her so much pain,
Frizzy wool hair,
Glossy redish, pinkish, blood smeared lips.
A face once envied by many now
Pale and cold
So easily he took her beauty.
Never will it return unless unleashed by concealer and heavy make up.
Daddy’s little girl became
A stranger’s playground
Her ripped flowery purple shirt revealing the roundness, the firmness of her milky colored breast.
Blue jeans unbottomed showing shreds of white lace.
Most it be said her purity forever gone.
How could someone steal such a life
And here her body lie on the cold hard cement, out for anyone to see.
So slowly they pull the thin white sheet over her and yet no one knows her name. Jane Doe they whisper
And these whispers circle around and Jane Doe she remains until her soul touches heavens door and God welcomes Sarah Marie to her new aquired home.
