Sometimes Mrs Hudson goes to Angelo’s and sits at a little table along the wall in the back when it’s not busy and Angelo brings her wine and sits down across from her and they complain about Sherlock and John and how long it’s taking them to figure it out. Mrs Hudson frets and Angelo pats her hand. They talk about all the “hints” they’ve dropped. “I’ve been quite overt,” Mrs H confesses, and Angelo agrees. “I always bring them a candle,” he says. They agree that it’s not their fault and that they’re dealing with two of the most obtuse people on the planet. Angelo refills their glasses.

People ask victims of abuse, ‘why didn’t you leave?’ This fic delves into the dark world of female-toward-male domestic violence and shows how it starts with manipulation and gaslighting long before there’s any physical abuse. It also explores ‘why they stay’ and shows how, after being brainwashed, it’s very difficult for the victim to change their thought process.

After the darkness of being abused by Mary, Sherlock is the sunrise for John. And it does have a happy ending.

Warning: graphic descriptions of mental, emotional, sexual and physical abuse; graphic description of the aftermath of male rape; major character death. This fic is dark with a capital D, but its exploration of victims’ thought processes is fascinating and insightful.

Seriously. John thinks that Sherlock is charming and hilarious and Sherlock thinks that John is the best human being alive. They belong together.
