I’m currently rereading it. So good. Also, every time I walk past a certain hotel in Frankfurt, I think of this story :).

*runs around in circles*
My 20-chapter epic Reichenbach hiatus/return novel Against the Rest of the World has just surpassed 30,000 hits as of this morning!!! This is only the second of my stories to pass this milestone and I’m so terribly pleased! Though I’ve written so much more since this one, this remains my magnum opus in many ways, not least for the sheer amount of plotting and research (particularly location research!) that went into this! This story is set in London, Antalya (Turkey), Nicosia (Cyprus), Berlin, Edinburgh, Doha (Qatar), Sana’a (Yemen), Frankfurt, and Hamburg, with brief references to other places as well. The plot itself is also somewhat complex, plus there’s a romantic subplot between Sherlock and John, naturally. The entire thing is written in first person perspective from Sherlock’s POV and goes into intense detail regarding his insecurity in terms of John, a first relationship, and trying to balance international spy drama with such a momentous personal thing for him as well.
At the time when I wrote this, I had read many wonderful Reichenbach Return fics, as the genre was known, and literally every one that I had read had been written from John’s perspective and focused on John’s sense of loss and betrayal and his anger/shock at having been lied to about Sherlock’s death, etc - and rightly so! But I just kept thinking, “but what about Sherlock? What about the fact that he didn’t even have a choice about that, that Moriarty blackmailed him into falsifying his own death? What about the fact that he couldn’t tell John until he knew that John’s life wasn’t in direct danger any more? What about everything he must have gone through, alone in the field? He’s a London-based detective, not Bond!” So I decided to write a story that starts with Sherlock in the field, counting the days until he can return to London and to John. It starts with him imprisoned in a makeshift prison cell outside the city of Antalya, Turkey, so imagine my tickled glee when series 3 started with Sherlock in a Serbian prison cell! (Not that I was trying to predict series 3 - but still!)
It took me a little over four months to write, the final chapter posted exactly two days before series 3 aired. The title comes from the quote, obviously, which was aired in the trailer for BBC’s dramas in August, 2013.
If you have taken the time to wade through this story, you have my profound thanks. This is a special day, indeed!

Dear Janine: I think the term you’re seeking goes to the tune of “an emotionally insecure, inexperienced homosexual with intimacy issues”. And he already knows you wish he weren’t. Sometimes he wishes he weren’t, too. Particularly given the fact that he’s preparing to dance with you rather than the love of his life, who just got married to someone other than him. He knows that maybe it could have been different if only he’d been different, if only he’d known how to put it into words, the ones that might have had the power to convince John that he could have been what John would have needed, so that he’d never gone looking for someone else. So that it could have been him in John’s arms when the music starts, rather than Mary. But instead he’s playing the dutiful role of best man rather than partner, and he’s supposed to be dancing with you, and he’s not what you wish he was, either. But it doesn’t matter because in the end he’ll end up going home alone, believing that he’s destined to dance alone forever, anyway.
