Tried and True, Chapter 261: Share the Wealth

Chapter 261: Share the Wealth
After evensong, Taweel sent Omri to find Tamaes. His apprentice soon ambled into view, tugged along by the little angel who had him by the hair. With a relaxed smile, Tamaes asked, “Am I summoned for assignment, song, or reprimand? Omri refuses to say.”
Taweel huffed and rubbed his thumb over the black stone on his sword hilt. “Shall we look?”
“You have not checked?” Tamaes joined his mentor on the low garden wall. “I love this part.”
“That is why I waited.” With a musical scrape, Taweel slowly unsheathed his blade.
Tamaes whispered, “Twenty-two. We will need more tents.”

Tried and True, Chapter 260: Ambush

Chapter 260: Ambush
Dorum and a copper-haired Caretaker sat with twenty-some newfoundlings. Stardust on lashes for newness. Fingers on lips for hushing. Twinkles in eyes for laughter.
Taweel slowly lowered himself to one knee.
“Have we surprised you?” Dorum inquired lightly.
Taweel’s jaw worked, but no words came.
The Caretaker nudged several boys forward. “The gobsmacked one with the pixie accessory is your new minder. Take heart! You have him outnumbered!”
“My wings ….” Taweel’s throat closed. He lifted blurring eyes to Tamaes.
With a smile that was all fondness, he finished the welcome. “This is Taweel, and his wings are our shelter.”

Tried and True, Chapter 259: Strangely Silent

Chapter 259: Strangely Silent
Taweel noticed right away, but Tamaes voiced his concern first. “Does it seem … quiet?”
“Unusually so,” Taweel agreed, scanning the encampment.
Bern and Taji loosed their weapons, and Jacinto turned to walk backward. He asked, “Where is everyone?”
“Training?” suggested Tamaes. But the skies were empty.
The silence held a breathless quality, as if a storm might break. And then Omri peeped.
From within the overseer’s tent came a muffled giggle.
Tamaes blinked. Taweel gasped. Trading wondering glances, they crept closer. Taweel slipped one finger between the folds of fabric, and Tamaes joined him in peering through the gap.

Tried and True, Chapter 258: She Believed

Chapter 258: She Believed
When Tamaes opened his eyes, Taji was standing guard. “Good news?” he asked.
“The best kind. Adin was Sent.”
Taji brightened. “I remember when my turn came.”
Tamaes sat forward. “You … you are not pierced.”
“My joy is full.”
A pang lurched through Tamaes’s soul. “I want ….”
“We all do.” Taji shyly asked, “Would you like to hear? About her?”
“Please.”
So he shared stories from the trove treasured up in his heart, whispering about a wisp of a girl whose faith was more beautiful than apple blossoms.
“Her name?” Tamaes asked.
Taji’s smile widened. “Celia Mae Pomeroy.”

Tried and True, Chapter 257: Good Riddance

Chapter 257: Good Riddance
They met in dreams, and just like old times, Adin met Tamaes with a tackling embrace. “I win,” he exulted.
“Were we racing?”
Adin shook his head, but his smirk begged to differ.
“Are you happy?” asked Tamaes.
He glanced over to see if Valerian or Taweel were listening. “Why has no one ever mentioned a gestation period?”
“A what?”
“Wait and see … and wait some more,” Adin replied wisely.
“Are you happy?” Tamaes repeated.
“Deliriously.” Adin punched his arm. “But why are you so happy? Glad to be rid of me?”
Tamaes relaxed into a genuine smile. “Never.”

Tried and True, Chapter 256: If Only

Chapter 256: If Only
Confusion robbed Tamaes of any joy he might have felt. “Adin has been Sent?” His hands shook, and he felt light-headed. “Is that all Gabriel meant?”
Taweel quietly said, “If only.”
“You do not think so?”
“Do you?”
“No.” With an aching heart, Tamaes said, “Adin has done much good. His skill is admired.”
“And yet …?”
Tamaes hung his head. “I have tried to keep him safe.”
“I know it. But you cannot stand guard over someone else’s heart.” Taweel set his fingertips against his apprentice’s breastplate and gruffly said, “We are each responsible to God for our own.”

  This Week’s Accumulation cvii

Our household is chock full of fall birthdays, and this past weekend we celebrated the last of them. Gifts and games and gilded nails—my only excuses for this delayed accumulation post. Before I launch into a new week, I’ll catch you up on the latest clutter. Because it’s piling up all over my desktop. Again. : ) You’ll want to take a look. There’s an Angel Unaware cover reveal this week. Come and see! ; )
This week’s accumulation: ♦ I’ll start all the way back at last weekend, because attending a writer’s conference has to be big news. (And the source of a lot of desktop clutter!) Since I wanted to meet with agents and editors, there were several documents to prepare: 1) a “onesheet,” which needed to include 2) a synopsis for my new book (more specific than a summary), 3) my full-length proposal, 4) sample chapters, and 5) a run-down of the books I’m writing under my maiden name. Whew!

Whew!

♦ Last spring, I entered the SDCWG’s annual writing contest. They have categories for published books, unpublished manuscripts, and poetry. I’m delighted that The Broken Window received an honorable mention in the Fiction category. -confetti toss-
♦ Okay. Who’s doing NaNoWriMo this year? My daughter Elza is … and I’m doing a variation.
♦ Remember my mentioning that the book cover for Pursuing Prissie wasn’t final? My watercolorist friend has been sending me progress shots of her painting-in-progress, and I thought I’d share a peek. This version will be much more detailed, so the flowers really shine. ✿ I know some of you are gardeners. Do you recognize the variety now?

Although my goal was to bring out Pursuing Prissie this autumn, I’m going to have to postpone the release. The story’s coming along beautifully, but 1) other deadlines are looming, 2) the holidays are fast approaching, and 3) rushing through edits is always a bad idea. Thank you for your patience. ♥
♦ I’m writing the final chapter of Angel on High this week. Of course, you’re still waiting for Part 9, so I can’t really say much. Except two things. 1) In December, I’ll release Angel on High as a digital book … with an exclusive epilogue called, “The Girl in the Orchard.” And 2) In January, a new serial will kick off in my column at Christian Fiction Online Magazine—Angel Unaware. As you can tell from the cover (TA DA!), I’ll be telling more of Ransom’s and Marcus’s story.

So what’s cluttering up your desktop? Do tell!

Tried and True, Chapter 255: Already Gone

Chapter 255: Already Gone
Hidden within an opanim’s whirling rings, Tamaes sang of longing—for his twin, for his mentor, for his charge. He ended with a renewal of trust. No matter how he was tried, he would remain true.
“Amen and amen!”
Tamaes recognized that voice!
Once the rings slowed enough, he leapt free, all but crashing into his mentor. Only there were tears in Taweel’s eyes, and Tamaes panicked. “No!”
Taweel hauled him close. “Fear not.”
“Adin!” Tamaes struggled free and begged, “Where is my brother?”
“He is already gone.” Taweel’s next words were heavy with relief. “Adin has finally been Sent.”

Tried and True, Chapter 254: No Easy Answer

Chapter 254: No Easy Answer
“What’s wrong?”
Tamaes winced as Taji tightened the bandages over a gash in his upper arm.
“Something’s on your mind,” Taji insisted. “Otherwise Bern wouldn’t have been able to land a blow.”
How could he answer? Tamaes knew something was wrong … or that something might go wrong. But in some vague hope that he was mistaken about Adin, Tamaes kept quiet. Instead, he said, “I do not understand why Taweel sent me away.”
“Does the reason matter?”
“To me … yes.”
Taji frowned. “Then why didn’t you ask him?”
Tamaes quietly admitted, “Because I was afraid of the answer.”
