Tried and True, Chapter 284: Snapped
Chapter 284: Snapped
No.
Where is your courage, warrior? Adin countered. Or do you still need to hold Taweels hand for every little thing?
Yes. Tamaes fought back a sob, feeling more and more like a helpless child And I want him now more than ever.
Adins smile vanished. I will teach you regret.
Because you already know it?
Rage simmered in topaz eyes, and an odd noise stretched between them, like harp strings pulled too taut. An instant later, the darkness shattered around Tamaes, slicing his skin, catching his hair, lashing through the inner folds of his wings. And he was falling.

Tried and True, Chapter 283: My Brother’s Keeper
Chapter 283: My Brothers Keeper
Tamaes grappled with Adin, anxious to prevent him from getting anywhere near the limp splotch of light on the ground.
Still worried about Taweels tiny savior? Adin asked mockingly. Or were you hoping to be mine?
Lowered gaze. Grim hold. Mute misery.
Youre here, and thats all that matters, said Adin. You and I belong together.
No.
Do I mean so little to you?
Tamaes struggled for words to explain his anguish. Staring into a face he knew better than his own, he choked out, I have lost a brother.
Not really. Adin smiled. Because Im going to keep you.

Tried and True, Chapter 282: Thrill of the Hunt
Chapter 282: Thrill of the Hunt
Omri clambered free of his hiding place and buzzed in tight circles, shrilling notes sharp as needles. Adin lunged and swatted the little angel to the ground.
Tamaes grabbed his wrist. What are you doing?
Hunting.
Not Omri! Tamaes hauled Adin across the room and slammed him against the far wall. I will not let you hurt him!
Too late. Prodding at the back of his head, Adin studied the dull smear on his fingers. Far too late.
Swallowing thickly, Tamaes repeated, I will not let you hurt him.
Oh, brother. Adin chuckled darkly. Hes not the one Im hunting.

Tried and True, Chapter 281: Blind Faith
Chapter 281: Blind Faith
Cold certainty gripped Tamaess heart, and his hand fell away from Adins arm.
For centuries, hed helped teach young hadarim to be wise where the enemy is concerned. The mentors warnings were always met with confusion. How could they? Why would they? Such betrayal was more than innocence could fathom.
Newfoundlings were nave. Tamaes was not. But hed always been a little slow on the uptake. Like a fool, hed abandoned his sword and wrapped his only shelter around a newfallen.
You have been blind. Adin smirked and looped his arms around Tamaess neck. Allow me to open your eyes.

Tried and True, Chapter 280: Pull
Chapter 280: Pull
Your wings, Tamaes whispered. Show me your wings.
Why? Adin drew even further back and rubbed distractedly at one shoulder. Youve seen them often enough.
But you said they ache. Tamaes used his own wings to gently corral his brother. Unfurl.
Annoyance flickered across Adins features. Dont tell me what to do.
But you could be injured.
Like Valerian? Adin continued to pull away. Did you find him? Did he send you?
Taweel is with Valerian. Tamaes caught his brothers elbow. You hurt him. Why?
Adins answer came soft as silk, heavy with warning. He tried to stop me, too.

Tried and True, Chapter 279: Cheated
Chapter 279: Cheated
Tiny creaks. A faint whine. Although the sounds whispered warnings, Tamaes pushed them aside in order to confront Adins dismay. Who deceived you?
I loved her. Adins face twistedpain, rage, disappointment. He made me love her, and then He crushed my hopes. I did not wait millennia to be wasted on a life unlived!
Nothing is wasted, soothed Tamaes. Your love will mark her existence for all eternity.
Keep your false hope and lies! Adin pushed away. Im better than this!
Tamaes winced as a reedy note slipped off-key. Omri?
No. The sound was coming from Adins furled wings.

Tried and True, Chapter 278: Best and Brightest
Chapter 278: Best and Brightest
Tamaes drew his wings more closely around Adin. Brother?
Am I not skilled?
You are. No one in our encampment can disarm you. Even the enclaves cherubim call you formidable.
I am! Adin exclaimed, eyes flashing. I became everything she could possibly need!
She! There was such fierceness behind that single syllable. So Adin had been given a girl-child to love. Tamaes wryly pointed out, We have both had ample time to prepare. Even still, I await my Sending.
Waiting did not suit me, but it was preferable to this. Adin let his forehead rest against Tamaess. I was deceived.
