Tried and True, Chapter 245: Back Row

Chapter 245: Back Row
Tamaes hung back, sitting beside Asaph’s apprentice. Heartsick and silent, he watched eight youngsters scatter as their names appeared under their mentors’ hands.
“Why do your wings weep?”
Glancing at the serious-faced teen in Worshiper’s raiment, Tamaes said, “My mentor loves children.”
“It shows.”
Taweel’s farewell song reverberated through the encampment, celebrating the new bonds being formed.
Tamaes explained, “We will not have more newfoundlings here.”
Puzzlement put a crease between dark brows. “How do you know?”
Glancing in Adin’s direction, Tamaes found his twin watching.
Adin winked and waved.
Tamaes dredged up an answering smile. “I will make sure.”

Tried and True, Chapter 244: Dual Purpose

Chapter 244: Dual Purpose
Dorum met Taweel and Tamaes just outside the encampment. Catching sight of the bronze thread gleaming against eight new tunics, he asked, “Loris’s handiwork?”
Taweel grunted.
“Selection?”
“In the next watch.”
Dorum hummed. “That would explain our guest’s arrival.”
Tamaes asked, “Who?”
“Someone to lead our evensong.”
With a soft gasp, Tamaes hurried ahead.
Holding Taweel back, Dorum said, “He arrived shortly after you left, and he made no mention of Selection.”
Taweel’s heart began to hammer, for a blue-haired angel stood with his arm linked through Adin’s.
Dorum’s voice dropped. “Asaph told me he came to hear Adin’s song.”

Tried and True, Chapter 243: Childproofing

Chapter 243: Childproofing
In the shady alcove where they first met, Tamaes unburdened his heart. “I am afraid for Adin.”
Taweel didn’t seem surprised. “What changed?”
“My trust.” Tamaes’s wings shifted restlessly. “Why did you ask me to stay with him?”
“Valerian suggested it. And ….”
“And?”
“Gabriel brought more than one message.”
“What did he say?”
“After selection, our children will leave with their mentors, and this encampment will not welcome another newfoundling until ….”
Tamaes’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Until?”
“Until the danger passes.”
With growing dread, Tamaes asked, “When will that be?”
Swallowing hard, Taweel said, “When Adin leaves.”

Tried and True, Chapter 242: Deep Down

Chapter 242: Deep Down
Once Taji was safe in the hands of a Caretaker, Tamaes pried Taweel away, and they retreated to Loris’s garden, where basins awaited.
“You’re hurt!” Weft attacked Taweel’s armor fastenings.
“It is nothing.”
“Untrue.” Tamaes grimly unwound his mentor’s bootstraps. “Let us help.”
Loris brought balm and bandages, and Omri pressed manna between Taweel’s lips.
His injuries were miniscule. An aching wrist. A scored calf. Missing skin on two knuckles. Tamaes and Weft fussed overmuch, but Taweel submitted to their tender mercies with head bowed and eyes closed. Because a different pain pierced him deeply. And he needed their comfort.

Chapter 241: Without Apology
“Right here.” Adin stepped through the tent’s entrance and leaned against his spear. “Did you need me?”
With a soft grunt, Taweel beckoned him over. “Do you have any injuries?”
“Scuffs and bruises. Nothing serious.” Sitting beside Taweel on the cot, Adin leaned over and whispered, “Forgive me, Taji?”
The boy smiled sweetly. “You kept me safe.”
“Only after I put you in danger.” Adin’s gaze locked with Taweel’s. “Forgive me, Overseer?”
Taweel used his wings to pull him and Tamaes close. Taji giggled at the sudden crowding, but Taweel couldn’t smile. Not with Gabriel’s warning fresh in his mind.

This Week’s Accumulation cv

My days have been full, busy, and actually quite fun. It’s been a researching-editing-formatting kind of week, which is a little different than writing. But good beginnings are important, and so are finishing touches. I can honestly say I enjoy every stage of storytelling. ♥ This week’s clutter is a mix of odds and ends, with some Threshold stuff, some Byways news, and a Bible study report. Did you know I started out writing those? Come and see!
This week’s accumulation:
♦ Since this has been a relatively quiet week, let’s do a little “housekeeping.” I want to make sure we’re connecting wherever possible, so here’s a rundown of where to find me on the interwebz. You should be able to click the little watercolor buttons to find my various profile pages.

♦ The next installment of Angel on High came out earlier this week in the October issue of Christian Fiction Online Magazine. We’re getting close to the finale on this story. Only two chapters left, and so many things that could happen before then. Have you been reading along? Story Summary: As the newest member of his order, Koji is eager to learn what it means to be an Observer. But looking and listening lead to trouble when he spots danger and overhears secrets. Heaven’s archivists weren’t made for battle, but Koji will need a warrior’s courage to be ready for the unusual plans God has for him.

♦ One excessively fun thing that came via courier this week was a package from Zondervan. I have some events & school visits coming up over the next few months, and they wanted to make sure I’m prepared. Aren’t these bookmarks pretty?

♦ Unless my study is turned into a book sometime down the line (which would be amazingly great), this news is mostly personal. I’ll be leading a weekly women’s Bible study at my church. I’ve been muddling around in Psalms and Proverbs quite a bit recently, so that’s where I’ll begin with the ladies at The Branch. Hey, I’m curious! Do you attend a group Bible study?

♦ And it’s hard to hold back my excitement for a set of books releasing in just ten days. I’m publishing the Byways books under my maiden name—C. J. Milbrandt. Readers can follow the adventures of three brothers who take sibling rivalry to new lengths as they race each other across their homeland.

All three e-books are available for pre-order on Amazon.
Release Day: October 20, 2014
I have review copies of Book 1: On Your Marks available. What does that mean? I’ll “gift” you an e-book via Amazon in exchange for your review on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Goodreads, etc. Please do give your honest opinion, keeping potential readers in mind. If you want to request a review copy, email me at christa [dot] kinde [at] gmail [dot] com. I’m eager to know what you think of Ewan, Zane, and Ganix!
So what’s cluttering up your desktop? Do tell!

Tried and True, Chapter 240: Emotional Turmoil

Chapter 240: Emotional Turmoil
Tamaes stayed in Taweel’s wake all the way home. His mentor looked neither to the left or right as he strode through the encampment, not stopping until they were inside their own tent. Dropping onto his cot, Taweel resettled his wings around Taji before lifting his gaze to Tamaes’s.
Pain. Regret. Anger. Doubt.
Tamaes touched his mentor’s shoulder and whispered, “Well done, good and faithful.”
Surprise. Gratitude. Peace. Weariness.
And then Dorum entered with Bern and Jacinto. He announced, “Valerian will bring a Caretaker.”
Taweel nodded, then stiffened. His gaze snapped to Tamaes’s face, and he asked, “Where is Adin?”

Tried and True, Chapter 239: Help is Near

Chapter 239: Help is Near
In gentler tones, Taweel repeated, “Show me, Taji.”
The boy plucked at the edge of a limp wing. “It hurts to move,” he whimpered.
Slowing to a smooth glide, Taweel grimly assessed the damage. Somehow, an enemy dart had shattered, leaving dozens of slivers snagged in the sensitive inner folds of Taji’s trembling wing.
Taweel’s sympathetic groan was answered by a worried squeak. Lifting a hand to catch the little passenger riding atop his head, he asked, “Omri, can you help?”
With soft croons and delicate fingers, the yahavim set to work easing Taji’s pain—one sliver at a time.

Tried and True, Chapter 238: Little Things

Chapter 238: Little Things
Up and up, Taweel threaded his way through the stream of angels still circling the earth. Higher and higher, until only stars filled his view. Then he asked, “Are you hurt?”
Taji lifted his face and staunchly replied, “Only a little.”
“Are you frightened?”
Taji hesitated, then quietly repeated, “Only a little.”
Valerian pulled up nearby and curtly announced, “We are all here.”
Scanning the hadarim of his encampment, Taweel said, “Fly high. And sing.”
Dorum led out in song of thanksgiving, and Valerian got everyone moving in the right direction. Taking up the rear, Taweel gruffly said, “Show me.”

Tried and True, Chapter 237: Focus

Chapter 237: Focus
“Enough,” growled Taweel.
Valerian brushed aside another volley of darts. “Agreed.”
The blunt end of Adin’s spear connected with a skull, rendering his attacker senseless. Kicking the demon aside, Adin asked, “Why? We are more than enough for them!”
“This is not our battle,” reminded Valerian.
“And this is no place for a newfoundling.” Under cover of his companions’ wings, Taweel gathered the shivering angel child into his arms. “Fear not, Taji. I am Sent to you.”
Clenched wings parted. “Overseer?” Taji asked tremulously.
Taweel whispered a promise in the boy’s ear, then launched skyward, trusting the others to follow.
