It’s been a long time since I read a good, old-fashioned romance for romances’ sake, and an historical romance to boot. 

 

Joanna is the poor misunderstood young thing with naught but her will to survive and her virginity, to speak for her.  Of course it’s her will to survive and all that necessitates for a young woman of the times, which lands her in the clutches of the nefarious Brian Thornton.  

 

The course of true love in this story, takes a long and circuitous route from land to sea to wagon train to ranch.  There is plenty of time for Joanna to develop some pluck as a character and a woman, and equal time for Brian to prove, once again, that men of history must have been complete dolts and only divine providence prevented their extinction!   I mean, really?   Can’t ask for directions nor clarification, apparently.  Couldn’t you have just cut to the chase, Brian?

 

Okay, I admit there would not have been a book if he had done the obvious.  And there is a fine accounting of events, especially on the wagon train, which contribute to lives full of grand places, amusing secondary characters, interfering past lovers and requisite baddies.   

 

The elements are all there, and I appreciated the journey.  I never warmed to Brian.  At all.   It’s difficult to say this, but I find a romance ultimately unsatisfying if I don’t care about both halves of the whole.   I found myself thinking Joanna could do better…

 

Notwithstanding, this is intended as a fine, sweet read in the historical context, and that is exactly what P.A. Estelle delivers.

Editing on DOMMING THE HEIRESS book 1.5 from the Best Selling Series The Dominion of Brothers is NOW finished; which seemed to have taken far longer than usual. Mostly because it kept expanding and because Amazon has strict deadlines for pre-orders, so every tick of the clock was ringing in my head. I know the Lovely Alison is glad to have it done, I may have put a few creases in her shirt from tugging anxiously at her. **toes the ground**

And for all you series haters out there, be warned: once Taking Over Trofim comes out, the rest of the series wont be stand alone reads. First and foremost, I would like to thank anyone who takes the time to read this post; I know time is precious, so I will try to be a succinct as possible.

My name is Baby Boy. I am a 29 year old male practicing submissive of the last 10 years to my lover-turned-husband/Dom, my Growling Guru. Why are we here? Well my bestie, Princess SO (twin and fellow author with Talon PS), approached us, asking us to contribute a weekly segment about sexuality and the Kink-related lifestyle and BDSM for her blog/website, and we are delighted to participate!

So I guess the most pertinent question to start is “What is BDSM?”

Denotatively, I could tell you that it is an acronym for a collection of sexual and non-sexual lifestyle or play preferences that include three separate categories of Bondage and domination, Dominance and submission, and Sadism and Masochism. Now, as I mentioned before, these things do not have to be sexual in nature to be prevalent in your life, though there are certainly a number of people who find it quite fun to explore these possibilities.

 

 

 

 

Bondage is exactly as it sounds: the physical aspect having at least one partner tied in some fashion, to the mutual satisfaction of all parties. There are many ways to bind someone using any and all manner of media (e.g., cotton or nylon rope, leather straps, chains, manacles, handcuffs, the list goes on and on) that depends entirely on your preference, practices, and experience level.

***safety aspect(s): Always check multiple times for adequate blood flow of anyone tied; when the binding is first done and periodically throughout your scene until it is time to remove the ropes. Keep Scissors on hand for emergency removal of ropes. NEVER leave someone bound and unattended for ANY length of time. ***

 

 

 

 

 

 

Domination and submission (D/s) : When someone feels emotional and/or sexual gratification from a consensual exchange of power dynamic, they are said to be Dominant or Submissive, depending on their preference to take or give power, respectively. Within this category there are several subclasses, such as Alpha Subs, Omegas, Little Boys/Girls, Slaves, Betas, and in a class all their own are Switches! All of these, I will go into great detail on in a separate article, or we’d be here all night.

Sadism and Masochism (S/M): Once again, I cannot stress enough the point of mutual CONSENT and EXPERIENCE that is required. This is the part of the lifestyle that pertains to the sexual gratification from giving and receiving pain. Do you like a little (or big) bite here and there? How about swift spanking? Does the sting of a leather flogger haunt your dreams? What about a six-foot long bullwhip snapped across your back and around your torso? Or your partners flesh twitching with anticipation as they wonder where the next blow will strike?

Now this is just an overview of what can be included under the umbrella term “Kink” or “BDSM.” Some people even identify Kink as their primary sexual orientation, meaning they are not necessarily attracted to gender, but are attracted to the complementary type of person in their lifestyle.  One of the truly beautiful aspects of this Lifestyle is that you are allowed and encouraged to do only the things you enjoy and desire, and no one can tell you you are wrong for it. The only thing this lifestyle requires is to be SSC (Safe, Sane, Consensual) sometimes called RACK (Risk-Aware/Accepted Consensual Kink.) In case you hadn’t noticed, Consent of a willing adult is the only real line in the sand.

 

 

 

On a personal note, I identify as a Bisexual Switch. This means I like men and women in and outside of kink, and I am willing and able to Dominate or submit to my lover as we both agree. To my husband, I am only submissive because he is only Dominant. However he does on occasion (and with my permission) share me sexually with other(s) and it is with them that I may indulge my dominant or heterosexual-esque desires, if I so choose.

 

If you are interested to learn more about the Kinky people in your area, talk to the cashier or manager at your local adult store (or Kink store, if you have one) and ask if they know of any Munches happening, or anything of the sort. Meetups.com is also a good online source to find them in your local area. Keep in mind, a Munch is a gathering of like-minded kinky people to talk and enjoy their lifestyle without judgment. It can happen at a public place or a private residence, and as long as you have an open mind, most are willing to help you learn and grow.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE A SERIES…

TO BE OR NOT TO BE A SERIES…

And in essence that is the question as well. What is a series? I’ve decided to pose this question to be pondered over because of the frequency of remarks I often see in reviews left by readers (for our own series but have also seen the same comments left towards others)

In the literary book world, Series refers to a set of books telling of an ongoing story that is tied together in varying degrees of sequence, continuity and succession. (See bottom for Random House Dictionary listing)

 

 

A series in the book world is more than just a set or a collection (though an author may release those as well), a series standardly holds a continuity of story &/or character content as it evolves. Even if the author tries to have each book capable of being read as a standalone, there are always going to be elements in it that will have started from a previous book, or will be resolved in a later book.

This includes sharing of scenes, where as a particular scene is revisited but told from another perspective without having to copy the entire scene verse for verse, because a series isn’t trying to retell the exact story over and over. Authors will usually try to paraphrase substantial supporting characters as best they can to explain why or who they are in the overall scheme of things, but if you feel there are some missing elements it’s safe to say those are in one of the other books in the series. It is after all the purpose of the series.

 

But I must chuckle that on the occasion when I feel like making my eyes twitch, I browse the garden of reviews, and the comments I often find…. perplexedly,  I’m left wondering…. did they forget it’s a series?

 

 

 

 

 

To give you some examples I’ll share; (paraphrasing of course):

“… gawd I hate it when there are secondary characters that don’t seem to be relevant. It makes for too many unresolved loose ends.”

 “Just a reminder, it’s a series.”

 

 “I hate this book because it didn’t have an ending, but continues…”

“Must have missed the part about it being a series.”

Not happening yet… Not until the end of the Series…

“I loved the sexual aspect, but at the end of the day I was left wanting more… story.”

“Buy the other book. This one was already at 300k words. Had to start a new book.”

 

 

“OMG, I hate cliff hangers!”

“dun dun DUHN!”

 

“The MC in this didn’t really do it for me, I think the book should have focused more on the two supportive characters instead.”

“Buy their book next.”

 

“God, I hate it when I read a book from a series and the next one isn’t out already.”

“Yes, we authors purposely write slow and only one at a time. When we could so

do the whole series in one sitting and in our sleep”

 

Of course we understand that last sentiment rather well.

We’re readers too, and chances are there’s a series out there we are waiting on the next release. But down times are not a new thing, Jean Auel fans waited 10 years, twice, for the last two books to come out in the Earth Children series. It happens, we’re humans too, (see: Fun useless faqs you never knew)  

 

Of course some readers handle the wait better than others.

So before you go loading up the assault rifle because the latest book left some content and characters to be explored in the next book in the series, stop and remind yourself….

 

It’s a series… it supposed to have all those great awesome loose ends and side characters to pique your interest. After all we really want you to buy the other book.

So go ahead… buy the other book… you know you want to…

Guards of Folsom: Book Two

Following the death of their sub, the former owners of the Guards of Folsom, Robert “Bobby” Alcott and Rig Beckworth, were left to pick up the pieces as best they could. After seven years, these two Doms are ready to move on and find the boy who will complete them. Their painful past comes crashing back when they meet Mason Howard, a submissive who just weeks ago lost his Doms in a car accident.

Reeling from overwhelming grief that’s complicated by a severe social anxiety disorder, Mason can barely leave his home. When Rig and Bobby find him, he’s hit rock bottom, believing life is no longer worth living. Bobby and Rig set out to prove the younger man wrong. Fate has brought the three men together, but they’ll have to face the pain of fear and loss head-on before they can all truly live again.

So, what didn’t I like about this book?…

Okay now, what did I like about this book?   Absolutely.  Everything.  

It gets more and more difficult to come up with new words and feelings and phrases for stories and characters and worlds that you love.   Without sounding…trite, at least.   But dayum if this series doesn’t just warm the cockles of my jaded little heart a bit more, every single time I read.

So, in order of occurrence but certainly not importance:

I cried for Mason.   Not sweet, movie-star tears mind you.  I ugly-cried.  Heaving sobs and running nose and the whole nine yards.  Most unattractive…

I was overjoyed that Rig and Bobby were not fresh-faced young bucks, but rather men of a certain age, who still lived big and loved large and had grabbed life by the short hairs despite some debilitating life-events of their own to deal with.   I am ecstatic when a writer recognizes us old farts not only have feelings, but act on them too.  With gusto!

I got that warm-fuzzy when other characters from Folsom came to visit and provided that stabilizing sanity a person is only good at when the life that’s happening isn’t happening to them.

I am in love with these men and their trials, tribulations and utter intestinal fortitude. 

I am in awe of an author with the gift of heart and soul and compassion, and one who also has the gift of true storytelling. 

I am pleased to heartily recommend this book…and series…and I’m most insistent that you go start it.   Right now.   Because I know The Guards of Folsom…

 You know that book that for some unknown reason you are saving to read? Becoming His Slave was that book for me and to this day I am still kicking myself for waiting so long to turn the first page of this story. Needless to say I have read it more than once and each time I discover something new but the one thing that stays the same is my love for this story and the characters it brings to life. I will mention there are a few editing problems but if you read for the story they do not take away from it in any way.
  Talon has given us not just a novel to begin the Dominion of Brothers series but a Super Novel. When you hear the words super novel you may be thinking you’re going to get a book that is five or six hundred pages. You will be pleased to find out this story is close to eight hundred pages and you are going to be torn in your choice to either savor them or devour them. I chose to savor them over four days and each night I dreamed of unicorns. Just like Trenton Leos aka The Dominus, the alpha Dom of the New York BDSM circuit. He has played with and trained many slaves, but he has never claimed one. He is waiting for that one slave that will surrender all of herself to him, to become his life slave. Or as Diesel Gentry, one of Trenton’s brothers in arms, business and dark desires calls her, his Unicorn.
 I will admit the first book mark I put in this story was one that had me grinning from ear to ear. It was when Katianna and Trenton were talking about her writing. She is an author who writes romance, not just romance but erotic romance. Trenton asked her how her writing could be of interest to Vashon. Vashon is a clothing designer who as Trenton puts it “is as gay as they come.” Katianna’s response was music to my ears. Her response to Trenton is almost the exact same response I give to people who ask me “How can you read those books? Romance is one thing we all love but those erotic stories and all the BDSM stuff.” Then they give you that look, you know the one. Then I tell them, as Kat told Trenton, “There is more than just sex in these stories.”
 A good story like this one will also give you a look at this lifestyle like it is supposed to be. Not distorted to give a movie or TV show higher ratings and not like a story on your local news channel. If you read the story for the story you may find some things that surprise you but you may also find a treasure you would have missed because of the tag “erotic or BDSM”.
 One of the things I found particularly great about this story is how Talon gave us two main characters, Trenton Leos and Katianna Dumas, but also some very strong and captivating secondary characters. He even allowed some of the secondary characters take center stage and become main characters for a brief moment in time. The artistry Talon used to do this enhances Trenton and Katianna’s story and also sets up other stories for this series.
 There are three stories of this series already published. Becoming His Slave –book one, A Place for Cliff – book 2 and Rough Attraction – book 3. You don’t have to read them in order because each story can stand on its own but I would suggest you read Becoming His Slave first. This way you will get a feel for the world Talon ps and Princess so, his co-author for some of these stories; have built for this amazing and passionate series. It will also give you a glimpse of all the characters you will come to love. You know how sometimes you read a story and fall in love not only with the main characters but some of the secondary characters. Well while I was reading Embracing His Syn by A. E. Via this happened. I fell for Lieutenants Godfrey and Day. Fortunately for me they also have a story, Nothing Special.  These books do share some characters but they are not a series as I originally thought, so you can read them in any order.

  In the prologue it is a little confusing figuring out the rank of our characters but when the story begins it is set. Our main characters Cashel Godfrey (Cash or God as some call him) and Leonidis Day (Leo) are now Detectives for the Atlanta Police Departments Task Force. There are a few typos but they didn’t take anything from the story for me. There may be a couple spoilers in this review but if you have already read Embracing His Syn you already know a little about the main characters in this story.

  I loved the take A. E. Via took with Leo. Not only is he out and proud, but only one of the other Detectives seems to have a problem with it. There was no hiding of or shame associated with his sexuality in this group of alpha personalities. I enjoyed Leo so much and the relationship he has with his brother Jax is just the icing on the cake. Leo’s relationship with Cash aka God on duty and the developing relationship off duty just turn this cake into one of those decadent molten chocolate lava cakes. Yummmmm Ha ha ha and yes Leo can cook but that is another story *wink*

  Cash *sighs* larger than life bad ass with a heart of gold and a troubled soul. Cash has one of those tragic childhoods which make this part of his story totally heartbreaking. It has nothing to do with his sexuality but with the abuse he suffered at the hands of his stepfather. Although the baggage this event causes Cash to carry and continue to pay for financially and emotionally is enormous you would never know because of the way he carries and conducts himself. His work family would do anything for him as he would for them. You will get a good picture of this with one of his interactions with the SWAT team. LOL This is one of the reasons I love fiction so much. A good author can take standard operating procedure and toss it in the waste basket to give a scene just the right twist to show a part of their characters personality and worth to those around them. Maybe this is also done to show Cash his worth as well.

  Well that is enough of the spoilers for this story. I can tell you I totally loved Cash and Leo. I enjoyed the banter of the men and women of the Atlanta PD as well as the other characters. You may even come to love the characters you may want to head slap and there are a few of those! So give yourself a good block of time because you are not going to want to put this story down until you have finished it.

  A. E. Via has given us some great stories and characters who will steal your heart and a couple you just want to head slap! LOL I do believe she is also going to become one of those authors you will just one click when she releases a new book.
