Sometimes when I see the word “Dystopian” to describe a story, I expect a ponderous story that weighs me down and is anything but an escape. While the setting of this story is a post-apocalyptic world or worlds, it reads more like a Sci-Fi/Fantasy-slash-erotic romance. Pure, perfect escape, as genres go.
It’s a hot read that also begins to develop what will be a series, and starts with this introduction to these worlds born of a natural catastrophe, and combined with a corrupt elite of the original world. The special talents or powers of the inhabitants of the various worlds, as well as their technologies, was both intriguing and entertaining.
As the irascible and yet lovable rebels of the suppressed Airborne world, brothers Arlo, Drakker and Logan spanned the spectrum of character-type. Arlo was the sensitive brother, Drakker the darker, kinkier brother and Logan was the untrusting Alpha rebel as well as brother, and with a shortage of women in their world, they would hope to form a polyandrous relationship when the time and opportunity presented itself…
…Enter Fay. A spy with some serious covert skills, she was a strong and likable character whose abilities gave her insight into the misdeeds of her Dirt Dweller Government and the resulting suppression of the Airborne race. She literally lands in the lap of two of the three brothers, mistrusted by the third, and interrogated into oblivion…or some other O-word…by one of them. She reveals herself as a converted spy and then life is all about furthering the plans of the rebel Airborne citizens against the nefarious plans of the Dirt Dwellers.
I liked the sci-fi story. It was imaginative and engaging and plausible as sci-fi goes. I liked Fay, until she collapsed in on herself and without giving away the cause, the reaction seemed all out of proportion. It kind of pulled me out of the story.
In similar fashion, and I’m not used to saying this: so did the sex. Initially it was in keeping with the flow of the storyline. Ultimately I found some interludes to be superfluous, actually disrupting the tide of the story.
Still in-all, it has a great feel to it. I can foresee a continuation of the tale in a worthy series, with some pretty enjoyable secondary characters stepping up to the plate.

When they were young together back in their werecat pride, Bowie and Channing experimented with love and sex, as well as flirting with a threesome with their best friend Emma. Once again, I am surprised by a short story. I love when I’m proved wrong (or at least guilty of preconception) and an author with a gift for the story in compact form, delivers. With heart. And shifters. And ménage. Oh My…
In crisp and efficient fashion, B.A. Tortuga uses “Deconstructing Channing” to bring the reader to speed about the three main characters, and then wisely, delivers the goods on only two of them. The reader is never allowed to forget there is a third member of this intended mating, but “getting-there-from-here’ is going to be a tactical undertaking.
The story moves from background revelations of a triad of scared and confused kids…or kits in this case…and plunks them into the here and now of two scared and confused albeit experienced adult werecats, and of one determined and more- than-ever, dominant Alpha.
Fates, the internet and an 8 x 10 glossy triangulate to provoke Dominant Bowie to mount phase one of his frontal assault on beta Channing. With relative ease and some seriously frequent and inventive sex, exploits the connection that never truly faded and returns Channing to His. Mate.
It’s fast, it’s furious, it’s incredibly sexy and it works. It’s the perfect implementation of Plan A for the extremely likable characters, and a read that, despite it’s brevity, is fully realized.
I liked it. A lot. And I await Emma’s fate in the next offering, though from the description, I suspect she won’t roll over as readily as Channing. And won’t that be fun?

This author is new to my reading list, but won’t be a stranger to it any longer.
“Nikki’s Secret” evoked, to almost screaming level at times, just about every emotion a human being can experience. As a reader, I have been made to laugh before. I have cried for the coulda-shoulda-woulda of a relationship, I have been angered and I have certainly been hot and bothered. But I have never actually hurt for a character and beyond the character. I felt this story on a visceral level, and I could almost reach out and touch the core, raw feelings of Nikki and her husbands, Cody and Ritchie. It was exceptional.
I wanted to hate the legal and law enforcement authorities who would have dismissed and buried both the physical and mental assault on Nikki and her partners. I wanted to beat the witch-hunting school board talking head into abject submission. I wanted to…
…but instead, TN Tarrant skillfully guided the story of real people with real lives, through a rational and factual discourse that was ever so much more powerful and effective in its reserve. She refused to cave to that mentality as a story-teller, and so as a reader, one is open to appreciate instead, a damned fine love story that she crafted for a strong and engaging triad.
“A thundering velvet hand”, is this story. A love enjoyed. A lesson learned. …and now a damned song stuck in my fool head…

Hooker, an affable young leather-jacketed tow truck driver
rules the nights in South San Jose. He reigns from high in the cab of a
custom-built giant tow truck that is as powerful as the heart that he keeps
hidden under his “rebel without a cause” skin.
Cruising the highways and streets in the heady days of the
early Silicon Valley; Hooker lives out his life with one hand on the steering
wheel and one hand on the gearshift. Four radios, two of which are illegal, are
his ears. Life is cherries as he tours his fiefdom with a one-eyed,
battle-torn, oversized orange cat named Box. Named for the box Hooker found him
in, as well as the box between the seats of the cab that he spends his time in,
the only three people Box lets touch him are Hooker, Manny the retired
Detective, and the love of Box’s life, the 500lb owner of the Night Dispatch:
Dolly.
Spring is coming on in the valley, and it is rapidly becoming
t-shirt under the leather jacket weather–Hooker’s favorite time of the year.
The police, have long turned a blind eye to his “rapid response time”, and the
waitress at his favorite midnight eatery is warming up to him. Life is going
just great.
That is until he witnesses the first of several cops shot to
death in front of him by an unseen assailant. The killing spree is executed on
Highway Patrol, city cops, as well as sheriff deputies. San Jose is paralyzed
as everyone searches for answers. Only Hooker and his “family” have their ears
close enough to the murmur that can speak to the evil that walks the streets at
night taking the city and county’s finest.
But when it becomes personal, can Hooker find the killer
before the killer finds Hooker?

If you’re looking for a new suspense, thriller, mystery author Baer Charlton is just the ticket! Death on a Dime gives us a ticket to the dark side. The night shift is where most of this story takes place with a cast of characters that not only work in it but those who either live in it or use it to hide. In my opinion he has nailed them too! His characters are varied and believable and you will come to love and care for them, even the ones society has turned a blind eye to. Baer also spared no expense on the details of the story and setting, from the description of Mae West (Hookers tow truck), the night dispatch center, the streets, lives of the characters and the murders. You know that saying “Don’t annoy an author they can put you in a book and kill you.” *smiles sweetly at Baer and hands him a fresh hot cup of coffee* You want to definitely stay on his good side; I’ve seen his handy work!
You’re going to love Hooker our main character even though he has a hard time living down his introduction in this story. He really does have a heart as big as the tow truck he drives. He has also earned his place in the hierarchy of the night and the family that comes with it.
When Hooker responds to a routine call something feels a little hinky. So he contacts the night dispatch and waits for some back up with a badge. When the State Patrol Officers arrives and approached the disabled vehicle no one hears or sees the shot, only the officer falling to the ground. After witnessing this murder Hooker does his best to help solve the case. Only it doesn’t end there it seems someone has declared open season on the Law Enforcement of South San Jose. It also appears that Hooker is always nearby when the incidents occur and someone else is noticing this as well. Now it becomes personal.
Death on a Dime is the first book in the Southside Hooker series it continues with “Night Vision” which became available July 1st. You’re going to want to grab that book next!

Talk about an unlikely pairing!
I love Lucky he is confident to the point of being cocky and yes, he is that good. Lucky is no angel by any means, he knows this and he lets you know it too, reference his rule number one. Because of the choices Lucky made in his younger days he now has knowledge and expertise that makes him valuable to both sides of the law and it did come with a price. Part of that price is the baggage he carries with him professionally and personally. The Southeastern Narcotics Bureau took advantage of this when Lucky got caught and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Who says good guys can’t take advantage of a situation. LOL In a couple months Lucky’s sentence he is serving with the SNB will be over and he will be free again. The one hitch is he needs to train his replacement. When Lucky meets Bo he knows he has his job cut out for him.
Bo is Lucky’s replacement and he is everything Lucky isn’t. Bo is an ex-marine, college graduate, team player and the picture perfect federal agent. When you look a little closer it gets worse at least in Lucky’s eyes, Bo is a green tea drinking vegetarian. Bo has his own reasons for joining the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau and he needs Lucky to take this training seriously. Don’t let Bo’s friendly, open appearance fool you; he has a few secrets of his own, the tall sexy ones always do.
They say opposites attract, or is it those few similarities that make a team or couple work and be successful? Will it even matter when the unexpected happens? Has Lucky’s ego finally got the best of him or has his training been done well enough to give Bo the knowledge he needs to accomplish his goal?
Eden Winters has given us a story that combines criminal suspense, mystery and romance with a bit of humor only two males can pull off. This is one of those books you are going to want to get comfy to start because you’re not going to want to stop until the end. You’re also going to have your one click ready for the rest of this series book two – Collusion and book three – Corruption. Enjoy
