My Reading Year 2014, in Summary:
Reading for the purposes of providing a meaningful and cogent review is quite different from reading strictly for pleasure. It was an adjustment to say the least, and I find that I have had to allow myself the leeway of reading a book once for pleasure, as I always did, and then again for critique purposes. I get my cookie and then the author’s get theirs!
I can also say that reading as a reviewer has opened my eyes to genres and sub-genres that would never have pinged my radar in the past. And this is a good thing. Nothing like a push from an author/publisher, and a deadline from Princess (squishy hugs!) to make one open one’s mind to possibilities, and worlds previously unexplored. I believe the only harder working thing in my household than me this past year, is my coffee maker!
Thanks to Terry for recommending me to Princess. Thanks to Princess for inviting me on board. And many, many thanks to all the hard-writing authors and budding authors out there, for allowing me (and occasionally inviting me) to tag along on the journey your imaginations take. It is indeed a privilege, and a pleasure.
And now to the good stuff:
Overall Favourite Book Reviewed in 2014:
This is an almost impossible category. There are so many standouts for so many very different reasons. Ultimately, the biggest standout was FINDING PARKER by Scott Hildreth.
So far from the usual romance I read, yet beautiful at an almost visceral level. It was thoughtful and smart and…unexpected, and I think the latter is why it hits the top of my list in a year of really exceptional books.
Favourite Contemporary Romance for 2014:
I am an avowed Joey W. Hill fan. No one quite as consistently captures heart-and-soul depth of world and character the way Ms. Hill does. Genre notwithstanding, I don’t even need to look; my finger just simply “one-clicks”, even when said clicks are on the dreaded ‘serial’ offerings. My general rule of thumb for the serial is “Don’t!” For this one author I will make the exception, and so my favourite Contemporary Romance for the year was Ms. Hill’s four-part NAUGHTY BITS series.
I love this tale of one woman’s journey in to self-acceptance and self-discovery, and of the man patient enough to guide her discovery of her need for him and the life they could have together. While this is so well written it reads like a complete novel, even in parts, this serial is available in a compilation one-buy as of January 5, 2015. Favourite Paranormal Romance for 2014:
I am addicted to D. B. Reynolds’ Vampires In America series, and this year’s rise of the Mexican Vampire-Lord-In-Waiting, VINCENT, hit all my vampire-romance-suspense buttons. “Vince” as I like to call him, just not to his face, will be an exceptional ally for Ms. Reynolds’s uber vamp, “Raphael”, and I am firmly along for the journey as alliances are made and firmed in preparation for the upcoming Armageddon.
This series contains unapologetically-vampire vamps; no one sparkles. At all. Ever. They do all contribute to a world that is as much about supernatural beings co-existing with humanity while they deal with inner customs and battles of superiority. It is as much about that world, and its intrigues, as it is about the romance. But its all there!
Favourite Book Hero of 2014:
Trenton Leos! THE Dominus. Fantasy Land. Period! And that folks, pretty much encompasses everything you need to know, however…
BECOMING HIS SLAVE by Talon PS is an epic book in size and in heart. This Hero is a man who would not compromise what was important to him or to his life, not even for the woman he loved. But he did show perfect patience in waiting for her to come to accept that her desires were the same. One must love a man with patience. Especially when he is THE Dominus. I mean, he does walk softly, but …

Favourite Book H(h)eroine for 2014:
Hands-down, my favourite Heroine is right off the pages of TN Tarrant’s NIKKI’S SECRET. This was absolutely one of the most compelling stories I’ve ever read in its totality, but Nikki herself is a profile in courage and a profile in all that is defined as personal character. This is a beautifully written story of one transgendered woman and her partners, and the rich life they made for themselves; that they made happen for themselves.
Favourite Book Villain for 2014:
I don’t have one. I don’t think I read anything this year with any one villain I loved to hate. Well, except maybe “humanity”. There was a recurring theme in my reads, of the stupidity and narrow-mindedness of mankind, but no specific book villain.
I can agree with Charles M Schulz: “I love Mankind. Its people I can’t stand…”

My personal winner in this category involves a series of books, and while I did review on Amazon and Goodreads, they were not reviewed under the auspices of BCS. But because I am in complete and total lust of the series AND its covers, I have to mark my “X” for Joanna Wylde’s REAPERS series covers. I mean, seriously…
Looking Ahead to 2015 – Books and Authors I’m going to follow closely and/or Highly Recommend:
Books:
-I’m definitely looking forward to the continuing saga of The Dominion of Brothers, in the form of “TAKING OVER TROFIM”. Due end January 2015, By Talon PS www.Talon-ps.com
-There is never enough Joey W. Hill in ANY year, though I know one can only write so fast…but I am also waiting for her next book in The Nature of Desire series, as yet untitled I believe, but it is Leland and Celeste’s story. Those who follow Joey’s Vignettes know Celeste had an AH-Mazing lesson handed to her by Ben, and Leland will be just the man to fit the permanence bill.
In addition, Joey will do another four-part Naughty Bits serial, involving some of Madison’s clients from Naughty Bits store. They will be released in consecutive months, in similar fashion to the original series. Bonus?: another glimpse of Logan, ‘cuz…yah…

-I will read anything, and I do mean anything by Annabel Joseph. www.annabeljoseph.com I am particularly partial to her books “Molly’s Lips” and “Burn For You”. A pair of intense, emotional life stories that should both be read together. They are BDSM themed, but the romance/relationship takes centre stage; a detail that is crucial to me.
The final book in her “Properly Spanked” series (historical, DD/Hoh themed) is due out early 2015 as well.
-Another auto-buy author is Cherise Sinclair www.cherisesinclair.com The Shadowlands Series (Contemporary-Erotic-BDSM/romance) makes me warm and fuzzy and its one of those, “I-feel-miserable-today-I-need-a-good-book-to-curl-up-with” series of re-reads. BDSM themed, but again, the heart of the stories is romance/relationship based.
Her Wild Hunt Legacy Series (paranormal/shifter/ménage) is next due a book early in 2015, followed by “Master of Freedom” from the Masters of the Mountain Series (Contemporary-Erotic-BDSM/romance) on April 14, 2015. Mid year, about end July I believe, another Shadowlands book is due as well.
-Joanna Wylde and her Reapers MC Series, has me hot on the trail of GOOD biker stories. And Ms. Wylde has totally got GOOD, and good-to-be-bad-boys, locked down! This is a gritty, earthy, erotic romance series, and the reads are quite visceral. Need. More. Bikers. Check it out at www.joannwylde.net
-On the M/M side of romance I am all about SJD Peterson these days, and I started with her Guards of Folsom Series. (M/M / BDSM /erotic romance) “Bound” is the final book and it’s due out in 2015. So much more to check out as well at, http://sjdpeterson.blogspot.ca/
-More M/M romance ‘lurves’ include author Kari Gregg. Try out The Unauthorized Guide to the Field Hunt and I, Omega. (M/M / paranormal) Ms. Gregg provides a unique approach to some great worlds and lots of heart. Lots of seriously hawt nookie, too.
-Kendall McKenna has penned, or is still penning, a wonderful (M/M / paranormal /Military) series called The Tameness of the Wolf. I adore good shifter tales, and this is a really new and interesting take on the whole werewolf mythos, placed in a contemporary military setting. Very world-rich and very character-rich, I can’t recommend it enough to those who love shifters. www.kendallmckenna.com
-Author Scott Hildreth caught my attention in the past year with his Un Series of Fighter Erotic Romances. Fighter stories are not necessarily a go-to for me, and still aren’t a given, but in the hands of a really amazing writer like Mr. Hildreth, that becomes merely the setting, and the heart of the story is in the straightforward, relatively angst-free telling of the amazing relationships.
I included his truly compelling book Finding Parker, as one of my favourites of the year. I couldn’t find a website, but have attached the link to his Facebook page.

-Candace Blevins. Her Safeword Series (Erotic Romance/heavily BDSM themed), specifically the “Matte” books, opened my eyes, pushed my limits, and made me think like few other books did this past year. These tales are hard-core lifestyle, but without being a how-to, nor preaching to anyone, she has created a venue for understanding via some really exceptional relationship stories. Highly recommend for the open-minded reader who requires a superb storyline. www.candaceblevins.com

The Twins: Talon & Prin’s Year in Review for 2014
2014 was kicked off with the continued hard labors of Princess and the twins’ editor: Alison Greene, when they had begun back in summer of 2013 a mass overhaul of all of Talon’s previously released books to fix the issues left behind by people who’d had no reason to call themselves editors. Eight books got a some loving attention and released them out in print several with new covers.
The largest endeavor being BECOMING HIS SLAVE which also got an additional 40k words added in bring the book’s total word count to just under 300k.
The next to be re-released in 2014 was A PLACE FOR CLIFF with an additional 7k words added in and was also released in French, UN HAVRE POUR; thanks to the loving attention of translator Jade Baiser! And we could not have asked for a better reward than to see Un Havre pour Cliff hit #3 in Gay Erotica and Gay Romance.
Rough Attraction wasn’t in need of much work but got a run through just to be sure before going into print.
Now with all the previously published books restored to a higher quality, Princess was finally able to move forward and start finishing the remaining titles she and Talon had started, plus a few surprise stories that jumped into the middle of all that.
2014 saw four new releases:
A PLANE FROM NOWHERE ~ Princess’s first solo title, part of her Teddy Bear Collection aslo became the first book the twins released through a publisher: Dreamspinner Press
KEEPING HIS DESTINY ~ Princess’s debut Post-Apocalyptic Dark Fantasy
DOMMING THE HEIRESS ~ Talon’s red-head heiress finally gave in and her book, though released out of chronological order was released to add some hot steamy reading to Talon’s Bestselling series: the Dominion of Brothers.
BIG SPOON & TEDDY BEAR ~ originally meant to be release through DSP in an anthology, it didn’t get selected, much to the delight of the twins’ fans. The book having started with inly 12k words was given free reign, letting her character tell their full story and was released becoming the second book in the Teddy Bear Collection.
COVER CREATION by Princess SO has really taken off and get some awesome attention through authors like Rick Johnson, CK Long, and A.E. Via with published work released in 2014 for:

A man with no soul is capable of doing the unthinkable. Is that what you want, Ms. Crawford? Me to do the unthinkable to you?”

What a perfectly delicious hook to begin this short and, at least MY kind of sweet tale, of what I thought was going to be an intense meeting of strangers.
Without giving away the story, it would initially appear that a daring but slightly delusional sub with a bone to pick (pun fully intended), sought to extract payback for as-yet unknown reasons from a successful and darkly Dominant businessman. She seemed prepared to employ nefarious but “oh-yah-I’m-all-over-that!” means to achieve said extraction – in his office. I mean, seriously? Every naughty (though that seems an inadequate description) fantasy was laid there, right at my feet, or my e-reader as the case may be. Holiday heaven!
And then came the twist. At first I was disappointed that the scenario wasn’t all it first seemed, but I needn’t have feared; as the evening played out, the pieces of the puzzle, and of the people themselves, came together beautifully. A short but compelling life-moment that just happens to take place at holiday time, when all of life seems bigger – both the good and the bad of it – and the possibilities are endless.
I am still going to keep that whole office thing rolling around in my mind, though…you know…just because…

Lucien inhaled deeply and then began to softly sing “Ae Fond Kiss,” a popular Tscottish ballad written twenty years prior, sliding his eyelids closed, afraid of any negative reaction from his betrothed. Detectives Mark Ruxsberg and Chris Green are very good at their jobs. Being the enforcers for God and Day’s notorious Atlanta PD Narcotics Task Force causes the crazy duo to get into more trouble than they can often get out of. The pair never misses out on an opportunity to drive their Lieutenants crazy with their dangerous, reckless, and costly stunts, landing them in the hot seat in front God… often.
Ruxs and Green love their jobs and they don’t mind the very demanding schedule that leaves them little time for socializing or dating. It was fine with them; they enjoyed hanging out with each other anyway.
However, most of the men in their close circle of friends and colleagues are pairing off and settling down. God has Day, Ro has Johnson, and their Sergeant Syn has Furious.
For the past several years, Ruxs has only sought out the advice and company of one person, his partner and best friend Green, and vice versa. Both of these alpha males are presumed straight, but neither can deny the heat that’s building in their once ‘just friends’ relationship.

The boys are back in town!
The men of the Atlanta PD Drug Task Force are kicking butt and taking names but this time the story is more personal than professional. We still get the fun of the Detectives unique skills of busting the bad guys and the steamy romance, but this time the story just seemed more personal to me. A.E Via took this group of secondary characters from the previous stories and ramped up the emotional, possessive and family factor to a new high. I so want to spill but I won’t because this is one story you are going to devour and relish more as you turn each page. I will let you know it isn’t just our Detectives we get in this story but also a few of their mothers and a couple of the younger characters who have captured our hearts. *wink*
I would recommend this story and the whole Nothing Special Series to everyone. I also need to let you know this story could have used one more run through from the editor. There are a few errors that will catch your eye but they don’t take away from the story.
Detectives Mark Ruxsberg and Chris Green are the bad ass enforcers of the team. They have both been so busy with their job they haven’t had or made time for the romance the other members of the team have found. They have both come to realize this after Ruxs is cornered into taking out one of the ladies from the Records Department. Dating has never been so. . . um yeah, sometime status quo is best. LOL Sometimes you need to really look at your status quo, there may be something there you don’t see or grasp.
So grab your beverage, tissue and maybe your nerf bat, you never know when you will need to smack something or someone, get comfy and enjoy!

Heroine Cassie, who’s story began in No Safeword: Matte; Happily Ever After as a friend of Sam, Ethan and Frisco as well as a fellow MMA enthusiast, was blissfully unaware of her friend’s kinkier side even while beginning to harbour warm fuzzies for Frisco. This book picks up mid-Matte; HEA and elaborates on storyline only referenced in the previous book.
Frisco has a currently contracted male slave, Cameron, who is a dancer. While a concurrent relationship eventually develops with Cassie and Cameron, Frisco seems hell-bent to stick to his personal credo of “dating women; playing with men”, and committing to no one.
Cameron is a sweet submissive with a heart of gold. He and Cassie become directed play partners through Frisco, and fast friends through an abiding mutual respect. Long narrative short, both Cassie and Cameron come to need something deeper and more committed from Frisco and he is unwilling/unable to comply. First Cassie leaves to try and discover what she needs elsewhere, and ultimately Frisco quite heartlessly drives Cameron away.
Enter Isaac. Isaac has no problem helping Cassie discover exactly who she is and what she needs. Until he discovers that Cassie comes to him from his very best childhood friend and “brother”, Frisco. They call a cooling off period and it is in this interval that Cassie is brutally attacked and raped by a predator from Sam’s professional world. The remaining story revolves around Cameron and the two Doms coming together to get Cassie back on her feet, as well as to resolve past relationship issues and define new ones.
Take aways:
As always in Ms. Blevins books, I love how the various relationship dynamics within the lifestyle are defined through the careful, yet beautiful weave of a storyline rather than didactic lecturing.
I love Cameron and Isaac as characters because as I read them, I could also love them as people. They function in a strictly BS-free zone and never discard insight, and because of their efforts mainly, this relationship comes to life.
Sam and Ethan’s appearances were spot-on in the context of good friends and, having read the Matte books, and the insights in expanding on the overlap of both storylines were appreciated.
Frisco. Well, I wanted to take one of the 5 paddles I award this book and use it on Frisco. Intellectually I understand his “issues” contribute angst and drama to the work of fiction I was reading. Viscerally? I wouldn’t put up with a person like this in real life and it took grave events for Cassie and for Isaac to rise to the Top like cream…so to speak…to show him the error of his ways. While he did redeem himself as story characters go, I personally had trouble internalizing the fiction part of the equation as it related to Frisco.
And Cassie; an interesting character, as was my reaction to her. Another strong female role, and yet, while I cannot define the “why” or even a moment in the story to illustrate my feelings, but sometime after her attack, I felt a shift in my response to/sympathy with the character. I do feel (and do so with neither the first hand knowledge or experience to say with any real, or admittedly sensitive conclusion, so please forgive any unintentional slight) that her in post trauma course unfolded without the detail to anticipated and understandable stumbling blocks, and as such it was harder to reconcile the equally anticipated and understandable changes to her persona…if that makes sense.
Notwithstanding, another deeply moving tale with rich detail and compelling characters. Another hearty recommend.
