Reminder: DOMA is largely a Family Research Council production

Considering the history-making announcement that the U.S. Supreme Court will take up the Defense Of Marriage Act (and Prop 8) in the coming months, I think it's important to remind folks that one of the most openly hostile groups working today is the main group that we have to blame for DOMA's very birth. I'm talking about the Family Research Council, an organization that the Southern Poverty Law Center now deems a "hate group." Back in the mid-'90s, that very same FRC (then headed by Gary Ba...

Video: British PM backs marriage equality, rebuffs false 'religious freedom' claims

David Cameron made a really strong statement today, supporting marriage equality in the law while noting the obvious when it comes to religious leaders' right to deny a marriage ceremony to any couple (straight or gay) that they wish:

Video: Washington vendors excited for equality's obvious stimulus

Groups like NOM love to take the side of those few vendors who'd rather discriminate than accept the new business that marriage equality so obviously brings. So for a refreshing change of pace, here's a local report featuring local entrepreneurs who actually think more commerce is a good thing. Shocker, I know:

Group arguing against us in court: Gays 'caught in the snare of sexual sin'; equality fight is 'evil'

As you watch the Supreme Court this morning for news on the Proposition 8 and DOMA cases, remember that the legal organization most engaged in these battles on the anti- side, the so-called Alliance Defending Freedom, is involved in these cases because its members hold the view that gay people are "evil" and "caught in the snare of sexual in." This from a new ADF release:

NOM hitches its desperate boat to far-right, exceedingly anti-intellectual military meme

Another morning, another instance of the National Organization For Marriage arguing to "protect" against something that no one on our side is seeking.

This time it's military chaplains who are in the discriminatory organization's focus, with NOM president Brian Brown claiming in an email blast that military chaplains might be forced to marry couples if we don't pass an unnecessary bill that some of the most reactionary members of Congress have proposed:

Senators Roger Wicker and James Inhofe h...

Lots of people searched definition of 'marriage', received gay-inclusive answer

It's interesting that both "bigot" and "marriage" ranked so highly...

Merriam-Webster’s Top Ten Words of the Year for 2012 are:

1. socialism and capitalism

2. touché

3. bigot

4. marriage

5. democracy

6. professionalism

7. globalization

8. malarkey

9. schadenfreude

10. meme

…but even more interesting is the fact that all of those people who searched for marriage got a fully-formed definition that reflects the true nature of marriage in this country and worldwide:

How to become a NOM expert: Say gays engage in 'egregious behavior' and must be removed from Christianity

Robert Gagnon is one of the listed "experts" who works with the National Organization For Marriage's Ruth Institute. For the past three summers, Gagnon—who is fond of saying homosexuality is worse than pedophilia, among other claims—has been one of the main speakers at the Ruth Institute's "It Takes A Family" conference, alongside NOM employees like Jennifer Roback Morse and Thomas Peters. Gagnon is about as in the NOM mix as one can get.

So now let's further pull the mask off the NOM agenda w...
