Book Review: One Kiss with a Rock Star
One Kiss with a Rock Star (Half-Life #2)
by Amber Lin, Shari Slade: Half-Life bassist Krist Mellas is caught in a PR nightmare after his dirty sex video blew up online. His agent has the solution: a fake engagement with sultry pop princess Madeline Fox. Krist can’t think of anything worse than a charade with the bubblegum bombshell…except losing the band.
Madeline knows better than anyone what it means to live a lie in the spotlight. She’s determined to help Krist without ever letting him find out what it costs her—or about her girlhood crush on him. But after a smoking hot back alley encounter with him leaves her breathless, she can’t deny she wants the snarling bad-boy rocker.
In a world of glitter and diamonds where the kisses are fake but the climaxes are real, their facades start to crack. And the publicity storm may shatter them both.
WARNING: This book contains a scorching threesome, a dirty talking pop princess, and a surly rocker who hits all the right notes.
Julie's thoughts: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
One Kiss with a Rock Star is the story of Krist Mellas, the ‘bad boy’ rocker with a huge publicity problem, and the pop princess, Madeline ‘Maddy’ Fox, who decides to help him out. This is the second book in the Half-Life series, but the books can standalone as well.
This is the second book I’ve read by Amber Lin (although this was written as a collaboration with Shari Shade). The other book I read was How to Say Goodbye, which I really enjoyed, so I was looking forward to this new book. A hot, tattooed rocker… what’s not to be excited about? I loved the way that Lin and Shade wrote the world of an entertainer. I thought they did a really good job of showing the gritty side of the industry, the things that fans don’t know or think about. We all see the glitter…the fame and fortune, but reading this story will really make you stop and think about the things celebrities go through and have to deal with every day… the image they have to keep up, the rules they may be obligated to follow when they sign a contract at a young age with no one watching out for them. This was the part of the story that really spoke to me. I finished the story almost a week ago, and parts of it still hit me, making me sad or stop and think.
Now, don’t get me wrong, this really isn’t a ‘make you stop and think’ book. This is, honestly, ‘a lot of sex’ book with a good story mixed in. I enjoy reading a sexy book, but if I’m honest, this was way more sex than I cared to read…or maybe it was just outside of my comfort zone. Anyway, I glossed over a good bit of those parts. Just be sure to take the author’s warning seriously. It is there for a reason.
I would recommend this book for readers who enjoy a gritty romance with fairly heavy sex scenes (I don’t read the erotic romance genre, so take this opinion with that in mind). If you don’t like a lot of sex, the story is still really good, just pretty dark.

Sienna has a secret she’s not ready to reveal. What she doesn’t know is the price of her hesitation.
A string of misunderstandings that tear them apart.
Deceptions and betrayals that cut too deep.
A vicious lie that even the truth may never fix.
TeriLyn's thoughts: ***ARC PROVIDED IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***
Believing Lies by Rachel Everleigh turned into the most delightful surprise of my weekend. When asked if I’d be interested in reviewing this book the cover and blurb immediately drew me to the book. Upon starting the story, I got slightly worried this was going to be another typical bad boy falls in love with good girl story. My worries were confirmed because Adam certainly is a bad boy and Sienna certainly is a good girl. However, I found Everleigh’s easy first person prose, stellar writing, and nuanced new adult story to have some surprises I didn’t seem coming, some angst I thoroughly enjoyed, and some sweet and funny moments for all of her characters.
Adam and Sienna’s story starts off with a witty first encounter providing the catalyst for a witty, fun, and flirty friendship. Their immediate attraction palpates right off the pages and the reader can’t deny their chemistry. Sienna’s not in a position to progress anything romantic with Adam while he struggles to identify the intense feelings he gets when she’s around. Their friendship fills the reader with quick wit and banter, playful fighting, and some intense moments calling into the question their motives. Sparks eventually fly and the author maintains the same charisma and charm from the both of them. However, love isn’t easy for Adam and Sienna. They’ve both been burned by their pasts forcing each of them to be very quick to jump to conclusions about the other. Their trust and loyalty constantly questioned.
While reading, a few instances arose where I began skimming through because Sienna’s inner monologues became a bit daunting and forced. Back and forth she went making assumptions based on nothing it turns out only ending burning them in the end. The choices each of them makes, the secrets, the hasty reactions all felt natural to me. Quick assumptions are a part of life and I completely related to the characters on that front. However, the heroine’s stubborn demeanor and automatic reflex to run first without asking questions became too much for me at times that I wanted to shake her rather than sympathize with her. The angst of the book became a prerogative of the heroine rather than the reader to me a few times. Although I enjoyed the angst I felt her monologues could have been reduced and the effectiveness of the angst to the reader still present. In contrast though, there wasn't a lot of delving into the characters pasts besides the honestly they both gave each other about them. I enjoyed that they didn't come from these really dark places and each had some good. I’d be remiss not to mention the extraordinary cast of secondary characters. Adam and Sienna have a great group of friends. Sophie provides excellent comedic commentary and Connor is a typical guy’s best friend at the most important times. Sienna’s ex provides great angst as well as her Mother.
For a debut novel, I’m beyond impressed with Believing Lies. Rachel Everleigh wrote an entertaining, angsty, fun New Adult novel. Nothing from the characters felt abnormal. Their reactions were not unusual so the angst was real. It was the moving on from the angst that got me. However, it definitely did not detract from my overall appreciation of this author’s writing and structured story. Her ability to engage her audience and draw readers into the book excelled. She certainly knows how to provide a well-rounded story with humor, passion, sadness, and joy expertly woven throughout. And a totally swoon-worthy epilogue, which always leaves me reeling. I’m so excited to have read Believing Lies and to have met Adam and Sienna. Their story provided me a Sunday full of great reading. I definitely look forward to more from this great new author.

Review: Rowdy
Rowdy (Marked Men #5) by Jay Crownover: The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Marked Men series continues with this sizzling, sexy story of love, heartbreak, fate, and second chances.
After the only girl he ever loved told him that he would never be enough, Rowdy St. James knocked the Texas dust off his boots and set out to live up to his nickname. A good ol’ boy looking for good times and good friends, Rowdy refuses to take anything too seriously, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Burned by love once, he isn’t going to let himself trust a woman again. But that’s before his new co-worker arrives, a ghost from the past who’s suddenly making him question every lesson he ever learned.
Salem Cruz grew up in house with too many rules and too little fun—a world of unhappiness she couldn’t wait to forget. But one nice thing from childhood has stayed with her; the memory of the sweet, blue-eyed boy next door who’d been head over heels in love with her little sister.
Now, fate and an old friend have brought her and Rowdy together, and Salem is determined to show him that once upon a time he picked the wrong sister. A mission that is working perfectly—until the one person that ties them together appears, threatening to tear them apart for good.
TeriLyn's thoughts: I’ve been following this series since Rule released and I’m so glad I’ve taken this journey with Jay Crownover’s characters. What I love about The Marked Men series from Jay Crownover comes from her idea of family the belief in having a family even if your blood family isn’t around for whatever reason. This beautiful motley crew found love and kinship in each other. Extending from Crownover’s idea of family comes acceptance under any and all circumstances. Acceptance of each other, of each other’s chosen partner, of each other’s choices and lifestyles. There’s no judgment, no condemnation but rather an environment for each of these to grow, shine, and prosper the way every person earth deserves to grow, shine, and prosper.
My excitement for Rowdy and Salem grew exponentially after Nash’s story. I loved Rowdy in Jet and Ayden’s story and my curiosity continued throughout the series. Salem showing up in the epilogue of Nash was a shocker to the reader as much as Rowdy. With a past coated in darkness, Rowdy found freedom within his circle of loved ones. Salem reminds him of the hurt he’s suffered and refuses to wholly dismiss. On the outside he’s care free, fun, charming, and defensive of those he loves. But on the inside Rowdy presents as a wounded soul. We feel for him as the reader, listen to his story with open hearts, minds, and arms. Salem Cruz craves freedom. She ran from a caged childhood at the first opportunity she could without the care of what she left behind. She saw a chance at a happy life for herself and took it. From that came a strong, independent, loving woman. But Salem soon learns she’s trapped in the guilt of that freedom, troubled by her freedom after so long because really although free, Salem never in her life has settled. The ultimate settlement of these two satisfied me greatly. Because through their crazy family of Marked Men and Women they find love, understanding, and ultimately peace in their scarred souls.
This is not my favorite Marked Men novel by any stretch. I still rank Rule, Jet, and Rome above the latest installments. There were times when I found myself skimming through paragraphs in the middle because the back and forth between Rowdy and Salem became monotonous. I love a good chase and I was settled in for a cat and mouse game but when the characters switched roles and the chase went on something felt off to me. However, all the elements I love about this author were included and prevalent in Rowdy. Her first person writing style from the dual point of view gives extra flair to her stories as it’s nice to hear directly from her men. Rowdy’s thoughts about his troubled past made him so much more relatable. Her themes of acceptance, forgiveness, family, and sense of self all make me smile. And as usual her previous characters surround the main characters with love, support, and devotion while moving forward in their own lives as well. I get excited about this series. I adore the characters. Some great stuff is coming for Rule and Shaw (my favorites) too! Can’t wait to find out the story of Asa, the southern charmer & reformed criminal when he meets his match in Royal, the feisty red-headed officer of law. I would highly recommend the Marked Men series by Jay Crownover to anyone who loves a bad boy turned one-woman-man by strong females with attitudes.

Years earlier, behind enemy lines.
Long nights, sitting against the wall staring into darkness. We’d shared just about everything to pass the time, to keep from going insane from the monotony combined with the stress of knowing at any time we could be blown up or shot. We were walking targets, and we’d been lucky.
“You’re right,” Derek exhaled, looking away again, out at the expanse of beige. “I’m proud of my service, but when the time comes, I’ll walk away.”
“You’ve got another road ahead of you.” I didn’t think any less of him. Some guys in this outfit didn’t have the right stuff, the right attitude or the honor, but that could never be said of this guy. “I’m glad we served together.”
“Now who’s getting soft?” His deep laugh was the last sound I heard before the staccato CLANK! of a grenade dropped into the space with us.
We had seconds, if that long. No time to speak, only time to act. Reaching down, I grabbed it, and threw it as fast and hard as I could. It was just out the window when the BLAST! threw us both against the wall.
My back had been curved from the throw, and I hit a bare space. I was winded, but not hurt. Derek was out cold. White smoke filled the room. Our luck had run out, and we were under attack.
Shots fired outside as I made my way through the blindness to where his dark body was slumped on the stone floor.
“Fuck!” I shouted. He was as big as me and twice as heavy, but I’d be damned if I left him. With a deep grunt, I hauled him onto my shoulders.
His voice was a groan in my ear. “Stuart. Go on. Go.”
“You’re not dying today, soldier,” I shouted back.
Months of working out and not much else between the explosions and the darkness had me strong as a damn mule. I went up the short flight of steps to the exit. I had no idea what I’d be stepping into when I went through that door, but they knew we were in here. We couldn’t stay.
I held Derek steady on my back as I peered into the smoke and dust filling the air. Two bodies in robes right ahead of us. Not Americans. There wasn’t anything we could do for them, but I would do something for us.
A convoy had been preparing to transport the last of us two houses down. If I could make it that far, it was possible we’d be safe. I couldn’t see a damned thing as I made a break for it. My thighs burned with the exertion and the extra weight, and my lungs seized from the smoke. Derek was a fucking dead weight on my back, but I barely noticed with the adrenaline pumping in my veins. I was born for this.
Blinking hard, I could just make out the hulking shapes of the armored trucks waiting to take us away.
“We’re almost there,” I shouted, even though I was pretty sure he was out again.
Taking the first step, I dug in with my heel, trying to gain speed with traction. Combat boots, thirty-seven pounds of weaponry, ordnance, spying shit, and my commanding officer. I ran as fast as I could to the symbol of safety. I was just there when my feet went out from under me. My ears rang with the noise of the explosion, and pain shot like fire through the lower half of my body. I flew forward and landed on my chest in the dirt.
I couldn’t stop shaking. It wasn’t fear—it was adrenaline combined with the effort I’d been pushing to get us to safety faster. My brain tilted on its side. The trucks were near, but they couldn’t see us in all the smoke and confusion. Bodies were running all around us. I needed to get up, but I was dazed.
God dammit! I was made for this. I tried to force myself to get up, but my body didn’t respond. I was above myself looking down. Derek lay on my back exposed, unprotected. What the fuck was happening to me? I fought against this pansy-assed flake-out. I had to get back down there. I had to carry my brother to safety. I was stronger than this.
Somebody had to see us, but the whole place was in confusion. Another whistling rocket, another explosion. I struggled to open my mouth and yell for backup. Nothing came out. I saw a truck jolt and fly back. It was hit.
Then, like an old-fashioned television switching off, everything blinked to black. I didn’t see anything anymore.

Tristen wakes to find a man watching him from the mirror. A chill runs through Tristen’s body as the familiar robed priest stares at him longingly. The priest struggles to open his mouth; the stitches that lace his lips together slowly rip apart and jut raggedly from his mouth. His bloody lips stretch wide as he leans towards Tristen, trying to suck him into a deep black hole.
Ever since Tristen, a sixteen year old teenager, is assigned to work with Ailey on a school project, his life takes a thrilling and alarming turn. Tristen can’t stop the inexorable pull he feels toward Ailey; just being around her draws him in completely, blindly and with disastrous consequences. At the same time, an evil priest invades Tristen’s dreams and threatens to kill his mom.
Soon, Tristen and his friends find themselves magically transported to Fifteenth Century France and Tristen discovers that he is the last-born Seeker - destined to save the past and the influential figures who shape it. When someone tries to kill him, Tristen must make a choice: embrace his destined purpose and risk losing everything or be stuck in the past running for his life forever.
This is not a novel about vampires, werewolves or ghosts. This is not your regular romantic, time traveling, coming-of-age story. This is the first book in a magical, paranormal, fantasy series about a regular kid who finds out he is destined to become the new Seeker to save the world from a bloody ending. If Tristen had known that pairing up with Ailey would trigger a magical ancient prophecy ushering in the beginning of the end of the world, he might have stayed in bed that day.

I could feel her hand inches from mine as we lay, side by side, on the sand. I shifted to my side and studied the way the wet curls in her sun-kissed hair hung in ringlets spread out on the sand, just waiting to be touched. My hand automatically reached out toward her fingers, brushing them.
She opened her eyes and looked at me. An overwhelming sense that we, somehow, fit together overcame me. Somehow deep inside me, I felt that she was meant to be a part of my world. It was like our souls were reuniting. It was crazy and made perfect sense at the same time.
Suddenly she jerked up.
“That was so stupid!”

Fleur Camacho loves to read and travel. Sometimes she reads so much that she gets sucked into the story and ignores everything she supposed to do. Travel is always the top priority on her list and comes before fixing up the house, putting in grass or buying her dream car (an antique Ford Mustang).
She also likes to hike, paint, be healthy and read boring economic reports. She is the wife to an uber-cool and sexy husband and a mom to two awesome children.
She practices positive inevitability and believes that if you don’t take the chance on something you believe in, you’ll never know what you could give to the world.
The TRISTEN book series began as a conversation with her husband, after watching the tv show Heroes. They talked about what ability they would pick if they could have any power. Since she loves to experience different cultures, she decided that she would love to have the power to travel around the world and through time. Her husband liked this idea and told her that she should write a book about it. She wrote one page and then forgot about it. One day, her husband read the page and encouraged her to keep writing. She picked it up on and off until one day she finally decided to get serious and finish her book already! She hopes to complete at least five books in the TRISTEN series and already has the beginnings of the next series bouncing around her brain.
