Book Review: Complicate Me
Complicate Me (The Good Ol' Boys #1)
by M. Robinson
It was complicated, it was also just the beginning.
A decision.
A simple choice.
There is always that one moment in life where things could have been different. That one moment where you could have chosen a path that would lead you down a certain road.
A different life.
It was easier to pretend that we were still best friends, and that she was my girl and I was her boy.
Pretending was better than knowing the truth...
I. Ruined. Us.
I had her.
I lost her.
I love her.
All I did was complicate us.
Standalone series. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Strong language and sexual content, not intended for readers under 18.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **Complicate Me generously provided in exchange for an honest review.**
Complicate Me is the love story of Lucas Ryder and Alexandra Collins. It’s an angsty, rollercoaster ride of a journey that pulls you in immediately from the prologue and keeps riding you through the ups and downs of a lifetime together between two best friends. A coming of age story told from both the points of view of Lucas, the hero, and Alex, our heroine, complicated doesn’t even begin to cover the relationship between the two main characters as they navigate strong desires for one another amidst a life of chaos and opinions. Along with their complicated love, my feels for this book seem somewhat complicated too.
Alexandra Collins grows up in a small town, an only child, surrounded by the families of her parent’s closest friends. She’s the only girl in a group of boys whom she adores. A group of boys who wants to protect her from the world even at a young age. Lucas and Alex have always been a twosome outside of the group as and they begin to change from youth to adolescence those feelings start to develop and take root as something neither of them can begin understand. With outside forces constantly working against them understanding what they feel, Lucas and Alex’s friendship takes a different turn. The depth of their connection fuses their hearts because they are closer than ever even as though they begin to live separate lives.
Throughout the middle the story waxed and waned for me, I thought a lot of emphasis was put on their childhood and adolescence where it could have been placed more towards their later high school/college days. Parts of the story I felt compelled to skim a bit because it was redundant. And since the book is long, taking me a couple of days to finish, the redundancies became cumbersome. There are a lot of details in the complexity of their relationship and their relationship with the other friends. There were several times I wondered how such complex thoughts could have been running through the minds of such young characters. However, there were glimmers of Lucas and Alex through these sections that really held my attention. I realized once I’d finished that there was never a time I wasn’t rooting for the two of them or not wanting to know how the book would end.
Lots of mistakes are made by both Lucas and Alex and their group of Good Ol’ Boys. Some of these mistakes, seen through the eyes of someone young, naïve and in love, could have been avoided but also could have changed the course of their lives in a different way. I’m glad now to have read through them to have dealt with hurt and pain of their love as M. Robinson so willingly dished out to her readers. The pain of their story makes it that much more understandable, exposing their vulnerabilities and the realism of how hard life can be when you fall in love with one of your very best friends when you just want to protect each other. I will admit, at times, the story became too angsty for me with so much volleying between their thoughts and they’re actual actions; indecision and outside influence dragging the story out way too much. But it was a good journey reminding us of the complexities of first loves and childhood relationships we hate to see move in different directions. It’s about forgiveness and acceptance.
When the journey of Lucas and Alex finally unfolds it’s done so sweetly that you feel immensely satisfied as a reader to have reached the conclusion. I found myself smiling at the sweetness of two best friends who couldn’t ever let each other go no matter pressure they received to do otherwise finally find each other. It takes a while, many mistakes, other people, and a lot of angst to get there but in the end it seems everything is just how it should be. Then the author goes and makes us see the beginning of the next book – a story arc we see in Complicate Me which is quite intriguing.

Book Review: The Air He Breathes
The Air He Breathes (Elements #1)
by Brittainy C. Cherry
I was warned about Tristan Cole.
“Stay away from him,” people said.
“He’s cruel.”
“He’s cold.”
“He’s damaged.”
It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.
But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.
We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.
Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.
TeriLyn's thoughts: The Air He Breathes comes as my first Brittainy Cherry story and wont' be my last. I found this author's words to be profoundly engaging and thoughtful. There was a certain boundary pushing quality to the writing where the author was able to make me beautifully uncomfortable yet still totally connecting me with the hero and heroine, Tristan and Elizabeth.
Told from both points of view of the two main characters the melancholy of tragedies both these people faced was ever present yet the peace they found in their coping with each other was ethereal.
Cherry handled the tragedies of these two characters with painfully delicate prose as they grew from the past toward each other at a reasonable pace. Both Tristan and Elizabeth possess flaws stemming from the fractured parts of their souls. Broken in ways they feel they'll never be fixed, Elizabeth feels the pain emanating from Tristan as he feels peace from her. Her patience and kind soul begin to heal the wild beast he feels inside himself even while both of them are resisting the changes they bring each other.
There are secondary characters in this book that give great reprieve from the sadness - Elizabeth's quirky, young daughter Emma who shines so brightly on both Tristan and Liz's life. Liz's friend Faye who's comic relief was perfectly placed. And Mr. Henson, the man for whom Tristan works.
The plot connects the past to the present in a way I didn't see coming and was thankful for however near the end I felt the relationship through these plot developments was too rushed. The twist at the end comes on the reader really quickly so quickly in fact, I feel I lost a little of my interest because I was too engulfed in the "mystery" of what was happening. I wanted much more at the end of this book - the pace in which their relationship so beautifully developed changed from slow and steady to near lightning speed at the end and I was just hoping for it remain in preserving their fragile souls. Since this book was so perfectly and delicately paced and balanced all the way through, the end felt incomplete to me.
None the less, The Air He Breathes really interested my reading soul. I felt so fully for these characters and while the end didn't wow me I'm still feeling immensely satisfied for these two broken people and the little girl who helps heal their hearts. And past the ending, this author provides a truly lovely epilogue that made me smile so big I felt a small part of their lives.
For those of you who love second chance, contemporary romances that will push you to believe in the characters beyond a simple relationship into the complexities of letting go and moving forward - The Air He Breathes is most definitely the book for you. I'm certainly looking forward to discovering more from this author.

FOREVER WITH YOU Excerpt:
I cradled my drink as Cam sauntered back to the pool tables. My mind wasn’t made up on the whole visiting them thing yet. Maybe I would. Maybe I wouldn’t. “Want another rum and coke?” My lips curled up at the sound of Nick’s rich, deep voice. We’d been chatting on and off since I plopped my butt down on the stool, and he had seemed happy that I was there. Total bonus points lottery with this guy.“I’m good, but thanks.” The last thing I wanted to be was drunk. I smiled at him, pleased when his heavily hooded gaze dipped again. “Are you guys usually this busy on the weekend?” I could see that small talk was something Nick excelled at, which made sense, considering his occupation. He was an equal opportunity charmer. Women flocked to him at the bar. The other bartender, the girl with the pink glasses, seemed to take it all in stride.“Not sure if you really call this busy, but Saturdays usually bring a larger crowd.” He glanced down the bar before continuing. “So you went to school with them?” he asked, jerking his chin in the direction Cam had roamed off to.“Yeah.” Leaning forward, I placed my elbows on the bar. “I had no idea they had connections here. Total surprise.”“Small world,” he said, echoing my earlier thought. “But you’re not very close with them.”It was a statement, not a question. “What makes you think that?”“Well, if you were, I guess you’d be over there with them. Or …”Nick was observant. “Or what?” One side of his lips curled up as he folded his arms across his chest. The movement drew my attention. I was such a visual creature. Not that anyone would blame me right now. The black shirt he wore stretched around well-defined biceps. “Or you’d rather spend the time with me.” The twisty motion in my belly cranked up a notch. “Am I that transparent?” “In the best possible way.” He picked up a bottle. “I’m glad you did stop by. Every time the door opened last night, I looked up and hoped it was you.” “Is that so?” “I speak the truth.” His smile was lazy. “Did you finish unpacking?” “Yep.” “Were there any more rat bastard combinations?” I laughed. “There were a few more.” “Kind of mad I missed out on them.” “There’s always later.” I toyed with my glass as I met and held his stare. “So, Nick, do you have a last name?” “Blanco,” he replied after a brief hesitation. “Do you?” “Keith.” I grinned as he unfolded those arms. “I have another question for you.” Moving in, he placed his hands on the bar. “Ask away.” “Do you have a girlfriend?” My breath caught a little when he leaned in suddenly. Our mouths were close enough that we were breathing the same tiny patch of oxygen. “Or a boyfriend?” Nick didn’t bat an eyelash. “Nope to both. How about you?” Bonus points explosion! “None,” I said, welcoming the tingle that swirled down my spine as his breath warmed my lips. He tilted his head to the side, lining up his mouth with mine with just a fraction of an inch between us. I started to feel a little flushed. “You have plans tonight, Stephanie Keith?” he asked, voice deeper and rougher. I shook my head as my pulse tripped all over itself in a happy little dance. Nick’s grin spread into the kind of smile I knew left a trail of women in its wake. “You do now.”

He left me shattered and mentally scarred. Our divorce should have healed those emotional wounds. It didn't.
Nine months have passed, and I am still trying to piece together my life that was torn to shreds. I am a shell of the person I once was.
GRIEF -Shrouds me in a cloak of darkness, isolates me from family and friends, and barely leaves me treading water. The only thing keeping me afloat is my rambunctious three-year old son, River.
FATE -Brings Liam Bowers into my life. He offers me everything my ex did not - love, adoration, romance and peace.
TROUBLE -Slithers it's way back into my life, threatening to kidnap the only glimpse of happiness I have found.
My past and future are colliding, and I am afraid the only fatality will be...me.

Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote this sweet little poem, that even if you’re not familiar with poetry you can more than likely recite.
“Tis Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.”
You want to know something?
I hate this poem. Every time I see or hear it I have to choke back the bile that threatens to escape. It’s collection of strategically placed words are complete and utter bullshit which people cling to in order to help them deal with the aftermath of a shitty relationship. What this poem fails to explain is that in the process of you loving the wrong person, you can subject yourself to a lifetime of constant pain and misery. It neglects to advise that when you decide to let this love go, you are left with a plethora of jagged broken pieces that you must somehow find a way to piece back together; you have to become a seamstress and learn how to stitch your own heart until its whole again. You are left trying to figure out the why’s and how’s and what could have-been. Until finally one day that fragile limb you’ve been standing on breaks … causing you to fall into the unknown not knowing where to turn. The only thing you know is that you are alone. Your thoughts of hopelessness and pain are the only company you keep, and no one, not even the one’s closest to you could possibly understand. Why, because they have chosen not to travel down the uncertain path of love. As for me, well my case was special, I loved an asshole so much that somewhere I unwillingly lost myself. I loved so hard that I was blinded by his untruths, none of this love I gave was reciprocated, and I paid the major price after I chose to disembark from his endless circle of disappointment. The price I paid was not in any monetary value, but my debt was settled by a journey I never wanted or asked to be a part of. This is my journey back from the dark unforgiving tunnel we call grief; these are the 5 Stages of Riley Winters.

Excerpt:
The space between us crackled like a fire. I felt myself drawing towards him with an intensity greater than before, as if he had grabbed me by my shoulders and was pulling me towards him. As I leaned in he leaned in. “Noriko,” his voice was strained. “We can’t.”“We can’t,” I repeated. I kept moving into him. “We shouldn’t.”“We definitely shouldn’t.”We can’t, we shouldn’t; I was fighting a losing battle. He was so beautiful…but that’s not why I wanted him. I wanted his strong and hard-working hands on my body. I wanted his smart and passionate mouth on mine. I wanted to unwrap his mind, complex and layered like an origami, and for the depths of his soul to pour into my ear through his whispers.I wanted Keir more now than ever before. I needed him. The rules I would be breaking seemed to matter less and less with every breath and with every grain of space that was falling away between us. He stopped, his mouth an inch from mine. I paused too. Was this where it would stop? Would he pull away? Would he have enough sense for both of us?He sighed, and it was a soft, sweet exhale which I caught in my mouth. “Damn us both,” he said under his breath. Before he captured my lips with his.

Book Review: Menagerie
Menagerie (Menagerie #1)
by Rachel Vincent
When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.
But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.
Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.
Lori's thoughts: ***ARC graciously provided by NetGalley and the Publisher, Harlequin (US & Canada) in exchange for an honest review***
This was a refreshing change from some of the things I've tried to read lately. I really liked this book and look forward to continuing with the series to see where the traveling menagerie winds up next. If your looking for romance or hot and steamy sex ... this is definitely not the book for you! Delilah is an amazing leading lady. She's tough, she's resilient, and she's not wishy-washy. There are stories within the story that I'm anxious to read about in the next books. A few things threw me a curve ball, in a good way and kept me flipping pages all the way through. Some books sag here and there, but I didn't find that with Menagerie. An entertaining read with an unusual cast of characters.

It's what Ryan Sloan values most. Control of his business, control of his secrets, control of his days and nights. With the way his life spiraled in the past, he needs to stay in charge of his present.
Giving up control.
It's what Sophie Winston craves. After a wildly successful career, she's stepped away from the business world and is now focused on her work as her city's most noted philanthropist.
When she meets Ryan Sloan, the chemistry is scorching, and utterly undeniable. Their desire for each other runs red hot. He wants everything she's willing to give him in bed, and she wants him to take her to new heights as only he can.
Soon, he has to have more. All of her -- heart, mind and body.
The only trouble is, he hasn't been honest about how he met her and the dangerous connection he has to her brother.
When the truth is revealed, he'll have to give more of himself than he's bargained for or risk losing the only woman he's ever let into his heart.
SINFUL DESIRE is book two in SINFUL NIGHTS, a four-book series. Each full-length novel features a new couple. This high-heat, high-stakes sexy romance series follows the Sloan family as each sibling falls madly in love against the backdrop of sin, money, greed, passion, mystery and suspense...

I've found myself in a conundrum.
He's half my age, with a body that won't quit. I keep
