Book Review: Like Candy
Like Candy (Candy #1)
by Debra Doxer
Revenge is sweet, just like candy.
Candy Seaborne knows she’s badass. She takes after her father, an assassin and possibly a spy, although he won’t admit to either. She idolizes him. Her dream is to follow in his footsteps. But first, she has to finish high school.
Biding her time, waiting for real life to begin, Candy craves drama and isn’t above manufacturing some. If you’re a classmate who wronged her or a boyfriend who cheated, watch your back. She’s no pushover, and revenge may be her favorite pastime.
Jonah Bryson is the senior class heartthrob who breaks all the stereotypes. He’s a jock, but he isn’t the typical player. He’s moody and antisocial. No girl has gotten anywhere with him since his last girlfriend broke his heart.
Candy sees Jonah as a challenge and the perfect distraction. But she may be in over her head because unlike everyone else, Jonah isn’t buying her tough act. He sees the lost, lonely girl inside. He sees too much. When he looks at her that way, she wants to let her guard down and be vulnerable. But that’s the last thing she should do because her father’s world is spilling over into hers, and life is about to get real much sooner than Candy expected.
TeriLyn's thoughts: This was fun and fast. Debra Doxer holds the ability to create inventive/original plots within the pages of her books. This Young Adult novel was a cross between romance and mystery for me as both elements were present. Her writing very easily draws into the pages. There were a few times throughout the plot where I thought the author was taking me somewhere else yet led somewhere unexpected.
The main characters of Like Candy each bring something different to the story. The heroine has me a little perplexed but I adored the hero. Being told the story from Candy's point of view gave me sort of a Mean Girls feeling. She's in high school and her persona in front of new people is much different than when she's alone with the hero. I felt a little dizzy with her character spinning from liking her and not liking her. Candy wasn't easy to identify with as I couldn't figure out her plight. Jonah, the hero, is mysterious and fun right from the moment we meet him. Between he and the plot of the book is where I found the most entertainment value until around the 60% mark. More starting happening, more clues given, and an angle of the story I didn't see coming.
Debra Doxer's writing gives a lot to the story. I enjoy her story telling and I love where she left off in this first installment. I'm looking forward to learning the truth in Sweet Liar and also excited to see if this author can make me choose liking the heroine over not liking her.

Book Review: Disheveled
Disheveled (UCC Saga Book 1)
by Damion Damiani
Delilah Jameson has the perfect life. A great job in her downtown DC art gallery, a group of girlfriends who will always have her back and Cole; her friend-zoned roommate.
Yet, there is something missing; a man she can truly call her own.
When online flirting with a complete stranger awakens Dia's sexual curiosity, how far will she go in order to find her happily ever after?
TeriLyn's thoughts: This is my first title written solely by Eva LeNoir and certainly won't be my last. Having recently read and enjoyed Blackballed, a book Ms. LeNoir co-authored, and then seeing this gorgeous cover on Disheveled I couldn't sign up to read fast enough. Needless to say, I'm now hooked on the #UCC saga thanks to Cole Sterling and Delilah Jameson so I can't wait to see what future installments to the series hold.
Disheveled, written simply with a lot of heart and humor, reads fast enticingly leading you into the DC area to fall in love with Cole, Delilah, and the #UCC girls. This book makes you feel good about love stories. It's light hearted, no overwhelming pain or suffering from either character, allowing to simply enjoy reading the story and with a big smile on your face.
Cole and Delilah are roommates with a very close relationship they both cherish. With their friendship providing a solid foundation in their lives neither Cole nor Delilah have pushed for anything beyond simple flirtations. They're really sweet together and super cute with their banter, useless but fun knowledge of 80's movies, and the intimacy the reader feels between the two as we get cozy reading the changes subtly happening in their relationship. Cole, a hard hitting lawyer, who's good-hearted manipulations make him all the hotter because LeNoir reminds even book boyfriends are men. And men aren't always the most romantic with over the top gestures and they don't know all the right things to say all the time. This author made her hero make a well-intentioned mistake we can all see plain as day while the heroine remains obviously out of the loop. Through arrogance and total hotness we fall in love with him, knowing what he's doing and seeing the romantic version of it. He fits this descriptions because of his charisma, charm, and quick wit - his confidence oozing from the pages making him totally delicious. His match, our heroine Delilah, oh my did this woman crack me up. Having a four year long crush on your roommate/best friend who happens to be an extremely hot man whore doesn't bode well for the slightly neurotic art gallery owner. She hides behind a thick wall of assumptions never letting her heart too close to Cole's masterful hands. But her reactions to him, her actions because of him, her affection for him - all make her true colors shine beautifully. There's a moment this woman is sitting in her sweats, all done for the day, where she's a real, honest woman. She doesn't need to anything ostentatious to provoke Cole or the reader because Eva LeNoir gives us the real deal. It's easy to see why Ms. LeNoir matched these two and did so quite perfectly.
In an effort to preserve the plot - which was another aspect I really enjoyed about Ms. LeNoir's writing, she doesn't play guessing games since the clues are there for the taking. As a reader it was just a joy to feel relaxed and content while reading a fun, romantic journey where the heroine is totally out of touch so I'm not revealing anything specific that happens plot wise. Expect humor from the #UCC girls as they all see the chemistry between Delilah and Cole while they willingly share details from their own love lives intriguing you to want to read their stories. Meet characters outside the #UCC who you'll want to know more about (ie. Jade). And experience what it's like to be in love with your best friend and roommate and have that come to fruition in a really ass-backwards yet so perfect way. The whole plot of the book really lent itself as being part of the characters. It's a little out there but it fits Cole and Dia so perfectly I couldn't have imagined anything else.
I can't say enough how much fun I had reading Disheveled. It's the perfect Sunday afternoon, contemporary romance read where you just want to kick back and enjoy a simple, zany, funny romantic book told mostly from the heroine's excellent POV with a few chapters told deliciously from the hero. These characters are ones with whom Eva LeNoir makes it easy to fall for between the pages. She made me laugh out loud numerous times. I can't wait to read the stories of the next characters in the upcoming installments of the #UCC saga and find out the meaning of #UCC. Figuring we'll get more insight into Cole and Dia plus meet more funny, real characters like them - it'll be a great series to follow.
**Reader's note** Shout out to the women of the real #UCC who inspired this series. I support you all, including you Eva, and think you're an awesome group of loving, caring, kind, funny women. There were parts of this book that had me laughing out loud just a little harder thinking of you all who had inspired these parts of the story (ass-biter, in this instance I'm talking to you!). You're a special force of women in the reading community and I'm grateful e to know all of you just a little bit.

Book Review: Finding Master Right
Finding Master Right (Masters Unleashed #1)
by Sparrow Beckett
Kate’s fantasies have always featured sexy, dominant, crop-wielding men, but finding one in real life was easier said than done. She’s used to getting what she wants, but the creeps that keep flirting with her aren’t her kink.
Enter Banner. His intensity scares her—he’s looking for a slave, and Kate doesn’t want to be one. But when he offers to help find the perfect Dom for her, she’s glad to have a matchmaker and protector.
Banner knows he and Kate aren’t sexually compatible, so what better way to get the tasty almost-vanilla girl out of his head than finding her a good Dom? As it becomes clear that Kate has no clue what she wants when it comes to kink, he devises a series of experiments to help her figure things out—a perfect plan, if he could stop himself from training and bedding her. Obsessing about owning a girl who wants to be free isn’t healthy. But when Banner finds the right Dom to collar Kate, how will he hand over the leash?
TeriLyn's thoughts: Finding Master Right unfortunately was not a book for me. I have a feeling it's because I've some really excellent BDSM stories from some really excellent BDSM authors and my expectations are too high. This mixed with the "novice" feeling of the BDSM world this book gives and paired with a Dom who I could find no trust in at all - the story just didn't work. Master/Slave relationships must pride themselves on trust. When I can't trust either character I'll never relate to them and that's exactly what happened here.
Banner meets Kate at a BDSM matchmaking party thrown by Kate's friend who's a practitioner of the lifestyle. From the beginning Kate is curious about being dominated and wants to find a Dom. Her naivety threw me off. She wanted the lifestyle but didn't trust herself to be dominated and keep her self respect. Her character was head strong and while I love a brat who finds a Master there has to be balance. It seemed the character was made to be overly bratty and resistant. She was naive to so many aspects of the life yet Banner threw right into it when he suggests he become her BDSM "trainer". I didn't feel the care I want to feel from a Dom when it came to Banner. I felt recklessness, weakness, and a lack of trust of himself as well. He was hiding behind this "I'm a sadist" facade where I saw no trace of sadism in him at all.
I feel bad, the book got a lot of great reviews and I don't like to rate books this low at all. It's not a good feeling as a reviewer and I don't like it. There was some nagging feeling inside me that told me to finish this book because I wanted to find something I could connect with. I think the story will work for those readers who haven't immersed themselves into books that fully encompass a 24/7 Master/Slave relationship or books with hard core sadists. If that's what you're looking for however, Finding Master Right isn't your book. If you're looking for a novice view into the life, I guess this could work for you. But to me the whole Master/Slave dynamic - the BEAUTY of it - is built upon trust. Trust of oneself and trust of your partner. I felt neither of these characters trusted themselves and it influenced the whole tone of the book for me throwing off what I need to get from this type of relationship. It was too cliched, too over the top not allowing me to connect with either character. Quite honestly, I don't feel it's an honest portrayal of how these relationships should work.

Book Review: Wicked Fall
Wicked Fall (The Wicked Horse #1)
by Sawyer Bennett
Never in your wildest dreams could you begin to imagine all the filthy and depraved things that go on inside The Wicked Horse. Step inside and Woolf Jennings will make every one of your dirty fantasies come true.
He’s covered in a facade of deception. An enticing blend of multi-millionaire and hot-as-hell Wyoming rancher, those that think they know Woolf Jennings admire his abilities to preside as CEO of his family’s cattle and oil empire. But only a privileged few truly understand what fuels the glitter of depravity in those gorgeous blue eyes. Only a few know he’s opened up a sinfully erotic and private sex club named The Wicked Horse right at the base of the beautiful Teton Mountain range.
Sweet Callie Hayes has returned home to Wyoming and is looking forward to starting her life over again. After a night of impetuosity, she’s managed to put herself right in Woolf’s line of sight… the man who she foolishly offered up her virginity to years ago and was flatly turned down.
Now Woolf is seeing that Callie is all grown up and has a kinky side to her that leaves him as confused as it does turned on. Worse yet, both Callie’s dirty desires and sweet heart are getting under his skin, and making Woolf question everything he’s ever believed about himself.
TeriLyn's thoughts: Wicked Fall comes as my first book by Sawyer Bennett. While the story of Woolf Jennings and Callie Hayes fell a little flat for me, I look forward to works from this author. The writing in this book is what kept focuses until the end. It's written from both characters points of view in a very easy, conversational tone.
Unfortunately, with both Woolf and Callie, I didn't feel a strong connection. Wavering between resolute convictions of his lifestyle and growing emotions towards Callie, Woolf Jennings was too much of an enigma for me. There were a lot of repetitive terms from Woolf such as "depraved" or "dirty" that weren't backed up with a lot of action making it cliche. There were several times when I found Woolf demands of Callie extremely HOT and dominant and I wished there were more of those times throughout the book because there were others when I found him petty and jealous. I could never really grasp who he was as a hero, if that makes sense and I like more confidence internally.
Callie Hayes leaves a simple, stepford-wife life behind returning to Wyoming to become more than the woman she sees in the mirror. Woolf is long time crush and when they cross paths she becomes enamored all over again. Throughout the story, I pleasantly pleased with Callie as she showed some growth and her curiosity in Woolf's lifestyle was quite intriguing. It was nearing the end when Woolf acquiesced to her requests and after when Callie lost me as a reader.
There were too many moments where Wicked Fall felt more New Adult than kinkier contemporary romance. Too much naivety couples with the back and forth nature from the hero instead of enough confidence to really take me there with this one. However, I didn't not like story, it was ok and as previously mentioned the author's writing really draws you into the world of The Wicked Horse.
The dynamic between Bridger and Woolf is one of my favorite parts of Wicked Fall as I hope this author writes a story for Bridger in the future. The two of them had a strong connection that went just a little deeper than a "normal" friendship. With a lot of details given about Bridger, I'm completely intrigued.
This is a complete story with no cliffhanger except for an epilogue that sets us up for new character as the hero in the next installment of the series. Even though I didn't connection Woolf and Callie, I'm still interested in where the author will take the Wicked Horse series as a whole. I think there's a lot of potential for the other characters.

Book Review: Worth the Fall
Worth the Fall (The McKinney Brothers #1)
by Claudia Connor
They meet on a beach. . . . Abby Davis isn’t wearing a skimpy bikini or sipping umbrella drinks, not when she’s busy chasing around four little ones. And Matt McKinney isn’t looking for fun—he’s a Navy SEAL, a grown man with a long list of missions . . . and fallen brothers.
They only have a week. . . . Abby has brought her children to this beach to start over, to give them the enjoyable memories they deserve. Matt’s been sidelined by a combat injury, and haunted by the best friend he lost and the promise he made: to remain a SEAL—focused and dedicated. This leaves no time for what he’s always wanted: a family.
But a week is all it takes. . . . Matt opens her heart while Abby soothes his soul. And though they plan to say good-bye when the week is over, something magical happens on that beach, something neither can forget. Something utterly, completely worth falling for.
TeriLyn's thoughts: I purchased Worth the Fall on a whim after seeing many friends enjoy the story. Reading this book on the water in one sitting was just perfect. The story is captivating in that it's easy, heartfelt, and super super sweet. The angst isn't consuming. The plot isn't deep. It's really just a perfect romantic beach read. Easy to get through in an afternoon, easy to root for Matt and Abby and the children. Matt McKinney - holy hotness. This is contemporary romance. Navy SEAL plus widowed mother of four. Family dynamics. Sweet children. An easy plot. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more McKinney brothers.
