Book Review: Whimper
Despite sweltering heat, Saturday night is in full swing at the local campus bars and cafes. Thumping techno bass competes against raucous voices and laughter until screams suddenly shatter the party atmosphere. A half-naked man charges through the crowd, savaging his peers. Zoe Clark witnesses the bloody attack and the unnatural behavior of the assailant and knows something horrible is happening in her quiet college town. Zoe opens her home and her heart to a mysterious newcomer who claims to have an explanation for the grisly attacks. Elliott Carter needs any help he can find as he struggles to discover a cure for the virus that can turn ordinary students into mindless, violent attackers. Attraction and dedication collide as the two are drawn into a high stakes race against a government gone awry and a menace invisible to the naked eye. As they fight to stop the spread of the deadly microbe, secrets and bloodshed threaten to destroy any hope they might hold for a happily ever after. When the world teeters on the brink of a deadly pandemic, how much will they sacrifice to save it?
Lori's thoughts: ***ARC received in exchange for an honest review***
My major problem with this book is I feel that the blurb/synopsis misrepresents the story. Nowhere in the description does it mention zombies. It talks about a pandemic -- which is exactly why I signed up for a review. I don't read zombie books. I just don't. The book is interesting, and well written... aside from the insta-love relationship. That aspect of the storyline moved entirely too fast for my liking. I don't think most people invite members of the opposite sex into their beds after just meeting them. In spite of my concerns, the book did receive some very high reviews, and if you are a fan of zombie books, I suggest you give it a try.
***Warning for adult language and violence***

“You can only catch the virus through blood to blood contact, right?” Zoe asked, kind of out of the blue. “Not through saliva or anything like that?” “Yeah, it has to be direct blood to blood transmission. Now, if two people both had bleeding cuts or sores in their mouths or something like that then it could pass along with the saliva but…” My oh-so-sexy description was cut short when Zoe pressed her lips to mine, wrapping her arms around my neck. Oh God, this was going to complicate things so much, but I didn’t give a damn. It felt too good, too right. I groaned, losing myself in the kiss as I tangled a fist in Zoe’s hair, pulling her closer and trapping her between my body and the air mattress. We kissed hungrily, passion with a generous dash of desperation mixed in. When her hands slid under my shirt and traveled over my back and chest, I took it as an invitation to do the same. I rolled slightly to the side, pulling her with me so that I could reach the clasp of her bra strap under the soft dress that had already hiked up past her waist. Sighing with fascination, I ran my thumb over the silky smoothness of her breast and moved to kiss her lips again. She arched under me, and our mouths crashed together awkwardly, teeth clicking before we found the right rhythm. Zoe giggled, and then gasped when we both heard the front door open upstairs. “Guess this will have to be postponed,” she sighed, swiping at her mouth with the back of her hand and attempting to rearrange her dress. Something about her hand caught my attention, and I reached out for her wrist as she struggled to re-latch her bra. A very slight red smear marred her pale skin, and all at once my nausea returned. With shaking hands, I touched my own lips to see if I was bleeding. Zoe blanched when she realized what was on her hand, touching her own face in concern. “It’s mine! It’s not yours! It’s not your blood. I just nicked my lip a little on my tooth. I didn’t even notice it. It’s okay, Elliott!” she exclaimed, touching my face and shoulders, trying to draw a reaction from me. I’d gone blank, too focused on the maelstrom of thoughts and emotions raging inside my own skull to even respond to her. Slowly, I backed away and retreated to the freezer. My body temp hadn’t even started climbing, I simply needed space. I had to get…away. I had to get away from all of this. I sat inside the freezer, not bothering to turn on a light. Zoe was the only thing that made me feel alive while I was busy dying. But humans are so damn fragile. What if I was the next to bleed? What if I killed her right along with the rest of the world? Surely that would send me straight to a special spot in hell. God damn it! As if I wasn’t in a special hell already.

She turned around, finally looking

"I still love you." I
swallowed the lump in my throat as the words came out, silently praying shewouldn't force me to leave. It wasn't every day that I told someone other thanmy wife I loved them, but in this instance it was the truest statement I'd evermade. "I feel like I've loved you for a lifetime. It’s true. I have lovedmy wife, but it’s not the same. It’s always been you, Rach. You’re the onlywoman I know I’ll never be able to let go of. Staying away was my only option.I did it to protect both of our lives, but there’s nothing standing in the wayanymore. Please don't deny us a second chance." Book Review: Raze
Raze (Scarred Souls #1)
by Tillie Cole
To take back life, one must first face death...
One man stripped of his freedom, his morals...his life.
Conditioned in captivity to maim, to kill and to slaughter, prisoner 818 becomes an unremorseful, unrivaled and unstoppable fighter in the ring. Violence is all he knows. Death and brutality are the masters of his fate.
After years of incarceration in an underground hell, only one thought occupies his mind: revenge...bloody, slow and violent revenge.
Revenge on the man who lied.
Revenge on the man who wronged him.
Revenge on the man who condemned him and turned him into this: a rage-fueled killing machine. A monster void of humanity; a monster filled with hate.
And no one will stand in the way of getting what he wants.
One woman stripped of her freedom, her morals...her life.
Kisa Volkova is the only daughter of Kirill ‘The Silencer’ Volkov, head of the infamous ‘Triad’ bosses of New York's Russian Bratva. Her life is protected. In reality, it’s a virtual prison. Her father’s savage treatment of his rivals and his lucrative and coveted underground gambling ring—The Dungeon—ensures too many enemies lurk at their door.
She dreams to be set free.
Kisa has known only cruelty and loss in her short life. As manager of her father’s death match enterprise, only grief and pain fill her days. Her mafia boss father, in her world, rules absolute. And her fiancé, Alik Durov, is no better; the Dungeon’s five-time champion, a stone-cold killer, the treasured son of her father’s best friend, and her very own—and much resented—personal guard. Unrivaled in both strength and social standing, Alik controls every facet of Kisa’s life, dominates her every move; keeps her subdued and dead inside...then one night changes everything.
While working for her church—the only reprieve in her constant surveillance—Kisa stumbles across a tattooed, scarred, but stunningly beautiful homeless man on the streets. Something about him stirs feelings deep within her; familiar yet impossibly forbidden desires. He doesn’t talk. Doesn’t communicate with anyone. He’s a man beyond saving, and a man she must quickly forget...for both their sakes.
But when weeks later, out of the blue and to her complete surprise, he’s announced as the replacement fighter in The Dungeon, Kisa knows she’s in a whole lot of trouble. He’s built, ripped and lethally unforgiving to his opponents, leaving fear in his wake and the look of death in his eyes.
Kisa becomes obsessed with him. Yearns for him. Craves his touch. Needs to possess this mysterious man...this man they call Raze.
Dark Contemporary Romance. Contains explicit sexual situations, excessive violence, disturbingly sensitive and taboo subjects, offensive language and mature topics. Recommended for age 18 years and up.
TeriLyn's thoughts: Raze, although quite different from other Tillie Cole books, really intrigued me. The dark elements of this book surprised me a little bit. While I know this author very capably delves into the darkness of life through her writing always delivering a powerful punch, I didn't realize the depths she could go. This book morbidly fascinated me. The way in which the unique love story is woven together with this plot about the worst of humanity works really well.
It's unique, different, and poignantly lovely - the story of Kisa and Raze. Told from the dual points of view of Kisa and Raze, the story hails as a dark, contemporary romance. The back story of Kisa's life, the past memories her and Raze conjure, the hell Raze has lived, and the present all conjoin to make a great story. A life each were born into dramatically changes due to greed and the obsessive nature of another.Raze's adolescence becomes something bred straight from hell, one in which he has no control. And Kisa's obedience towards her family life leads her to darkness in her personal life. A chance encounter that turns out to be much more than mere coincidence changes the courses of their lives once again. The unconditional love Kisa shows Raze, the change we see in him is beautiful.
Tillie Cole writes brilliantly. With each book of hers I'm totally immersed in the story; captivated by her words, her characters, her plots. Cole consistently shows us the power of true love with each and every book and that's no exception with Raze.

FROSH intertwines the stories of Ellie, Grant, Devon, and Charlie in Mónica B. Wagner’s sexy NA debut series, about falling in love and falling apart.
Toni's thoughts: ***ARC received in exchange for an honest review*** I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. When I first read the description I was very intrigued but when I started reading I was a little taken back because of all of the different pov's. I usually stay away from books that have that many pov's but this author pulled it off insanely well and I think it added so much more depth to this book. When you get to relate to and fall in love with so many characters its wonderful. I am very excited and cant wait to continue reading the rest of the books to see the outcome.

It’s just a regular ringtone. For me, though, it’s the wail of a war siren, and I’m immediately alert. There is only one person who has this number, and I didn’t expect him to use it again so soon. The tile is cool against my bare feet as I roll out of bed. I collect the phone from the nightstand with one fluid movement, unhindered by sheets or the morning sluggishness that an average person might face. Stepping through the propped-open patio doors and onto the balcony, I answer with a low, curt “Yeah.” The sky is just beginning to lighten over the quiet bay. Dozens of boats sit moored below, their passengers lulled into deep sleep by the ocean air and rhythmic waves. I’m high enough up that I’m not likely to offend anyone with my lack of clothing, especially at this hour. Not that I’m truly concerned by it.“Ice.”The code name is a sharp contrast to the warm breeze skating across my bare skin. My adrenaline begins to spike, all the same. Hearing it means that I will be forced to leave this haven soon. Sooner than I had hoped.“How is recovery going?”I instinctively peer down at the angry red scar on the outside of my thigh, where a bullet drilled into my flesh and muscle just three weeks ago, outside of Kabul. I nearly bled out before I made it to the doc. He patched me up on a makeshift operating table, buried deep in a maze of rooms, and charged me a hefty price.“Like new,” I lie.“Good.” Bentley’s voice is rich and smooth, a welcome sound in a sea of strangers. “Where are you now?”I peer out over the beautiful vista of crystal blue water and whitewashed stone buildings, the volcanic rock cliffs in the distance, reluctant to divulge my location. I sank a good chunk of my last payout on renting this one-bedroom villa for the month. It’s my private sanctuary, where I can revel in anonymity and peace for a while, before finding somewhere else to drift to.Bentley has never asked before. But he also has the technical capabilities to trace this call. If he really wants to find out, then he will. In fact, the second I picked up, he probably already had his answer. “Where do I need to be?” I say instead.“San Francisco.”
SURVIVING ICE Synopsis:
The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths series and Burying Water—which Kirkus Reviews called “a sexy, romantic, gangster-tinged page-turner”—returns with a new novel packed with romance, plot twists, and psychological suspense.
Ivy Lee, a talented tattoo artist who spent the early part of her twenties on the move, is looking for a place to call home. She thinks she might have finally found it working in her uncle’s tattoo shop in San Francisco. But all that changes when a robbery turns deadly, compelling her to pack up her things yet again.
When they need the best, they call him. That’s why Sebastian Riker is back in California, cleaning up the mess made after a tattoo shop owner with a penchant for blackmail got himself shot. But it’s impossible to get the answers he needs from a dead body, leaving him to look elsewhere. Namely, to the twenty-something-year-old niece who believes this was a random attack. Who needs to keep believing that until Sebastian finds what he’s searching for.
Ivy has one foot out of San Francisco when a chance encounter with a stranger stalls her departure. She’s always been drawn to intense men, so it’s no wonder that she now finds a reason to stay after all, quickly intoxicated by his dark smile, his intimidating strength, and his quiet control.
That is, until Ivy discovers that their encounter was no accident—and that their attraction could be her undoing.

Entering his building made her feet lighter. She was being carried on the wings of euphoria, each step easier than the last. She wasn’t walking to her future. She was running toward it. Taking a breath, she held it, and knocked on his door.
The door opened and he stood there with his lips parted and confusion furrowing his brow. “Jude?”
Throwing herself forward, she jumped up and wrapped her body around his and kissed him. Then again. He kicked the door closed and held her against it. When they parted, they remained close enough to share their panting breaths. He said, “You’re here.” When he pressed his abs against her center her head knocked hard on the wood and he kissed the exposed skin of her neck where it met her shoulder.
He was strong. He was virile. “Hey,” she said, bringing his face up to see hers.
Lowering her down until her feet touched, he said, “I thought we were meeting at the park?”
“I couldn’t wait.”
His glorious smile chose to shine on her. “I’m glad you didn’t. Do you want to go to the bedroom?”
Giggling, she replied, “Yes, so much, but I need to talk to you first.”
“Okay.” He walked to the couch and she stared gob-smacked by his allure. Jeans that hung low. No shirt. Boxers peeking out the top, but a V that directed her eyes below the waistband. He was a tease as he stood there waiting for her to join him. Sitting on the couch, he patted it. “C’mere.”
She started walking on shaky legs. As she passed the bar, she debated if she should stay there to save her clarity. That seat next to him was tempting, but she knew she’d be flat on her back within seconds. So she hurried to his side and sat down. His hands were instantly on her.
