~ About Amalie ~ 

AMALIE HOWARD grew up on a small Caribbean island (Trinidad & Tobago) where she spent most of her childhood with her nose buried in a book or running around barefoot, shimmying up mango trees and dreaming of adventure. 25 countries, surfing with sharks and several tattoos later, she has traded in bungee jumping in China for writing the adventures she imagines instead. She isn’t entirely convinced which takes more guts.



An aspiring writer from a young age, Amalie’s poem “The Candle,” written at age twelve, was published in a University of Warwick journal. At fifteen, she was  a recipient of a Royal Commonwealth Society Essay Award (a global youth writing competition). A Colby College graduate, she completed simultaneous Honors Theses in both French and International Studies, and graduated Summa Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa. At Colby, she was cited for research and criticism in Raffael Scheck’s article, “German Conservatism and Female Political Activism in the Early Weimar Republic,” and his subsequent book, Mothers of the Nation. She also received a distinction in English Literature from the University of Cambridge (A-levels) as well as a certificate in French Literature from the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, France. This dark, contemporary romance told from the dual points of view of both Talia and 221 exceeds any expectations you may have had after reading Raze. Once again, Tillie Cole takes you into the dregs of humanity showing you the utmost vile acts humans are capable of committing against each other. The plot of Reap made me curiously uncomfortable while the love story had my heart soaring so much so I couldn't put the book down.

Our heroine, Talia, toes the family line as much as she can. Within reason she wants freedom from the chains that hold her to the family business. She battles demons from her brother's return and needs an escape. What she never expects is to meet a man literally chained to hell by a disgusting Master. Poisoned and conditioned to be a monster, 221's character goes beyond tortured hero. The feelings Tillie Cole is able to evoke with this story are immeasurable. She once again shows her readers her belief in the power of true love and how far love can take us. The strength each person has because of that love changed them and what they are willing to sacrifice to preserve it. The story within the pages of Reap is compelling and intriguing. I took only one short 10 minute break while reading this book not wanting to put it down.

Besides the love story of Talia and 221, Tillie Cole included chapters from the point of view of Raze. These chapters I craved so fully as this was the rise of a formidable man. Fighting against guilt and nightmares, Raze seeks redemption and revenge. Kisa believes in his charisma as a leader and she begins to understand a part of him he can't keep inside as their love soars to new heights. The rise of Raze in his mafia family coupled with Kisa's acceptance is bone-chillingly excellent.

I really dig these dark stories Tillie Cole writes. As always, her prose is engaging able to connect the readers to her characters and their plights. It's grotesquely captivating and intriguing. Cole has a great story-telling gift and I can't wait to see where she takes this series next.

Sully still remembered the first time that he saw Cadence. It was a sweltering summer that year. Push-cart ice cream vendors roamed the neighborhood blocks like soldiers on patrol, circling playgrounds and community swimming pools. It was common to see people pop open fire hydrants like champagne bottles, children dancing in the shoots of water as miniature rainbows reflected off the asphalt.Sully and his brother, twelve and ten years old at the time, were living with the Petersons back then along with a tribe of foster siblings. Ol’ Man Peterson was a Vietnam vet with PTSD and a short-fuse temper that exploded so quickly, it was like his personality had a gas leak. Usually, maintaining a thirty-foot distance from the man at all times was insurance against his drunken rampages. His military pedigree had bred in him a no-nonsense adherence to hard work and, where appropriate, hard discipline—both of which were far less easy to escape.
The hard work in particular manifested in the Peterson prison as an endless checklist of chores (otherwise known as “slave labor” in the Spencer Graham lexicon), the completion or lack thereof of which determined whether or not you ate dinner that night. Additionally, each child had to fulfill their assigned task in accordance with certain standards, and as Ol’ Man Peterson was an uncompromising perfectionist, one chore could go through three to five rounds before the man extended a grunt of approval.
The afternoon Cadence arrived, Sully and Spencer were attached to yard work. While the Peterson walk-up sat only a few yards from the curb, which meant there barely existed a lawn between the chain-link fence and the front door, Ol’ Man Peterson preferred his grass cut to an exact height. It was taking painstaking precision to perfect his science.
Spencer lay on his stomach with a see-through ruler to measure the blades of grass. “I think you cut this side of the walkway too short.”
Sully rested a broom atop his shoulders, arms draping over it like a scarecrow. “It’s way too hot to even care, dude.”
“I care because I want to see the new Adam Sandler, movie and I’m not about to get grounded for another weekend.”
“How many times have I been grounded because of you?”
Spencer stood. “Whatever. I’m taking over sweeping duty.” He stretched out a hand to receive the broom, but Sully’s gaze had already shifted to a royal blue SUV parking alongside the curb. A woman emerged from the driver’s side. She came around to open the backseat door closest to the Peterson home. Two ballet flats appeared from under the door, reaching for the street. When the woman closed the door, a girl who looked to be Sully’s age or slightly younger stood with her, hands bracketed to the straps of her backpack and her bottom lip caught softly under her front teeth.
Spencer snapped in Sully’s face. “Hellooo? Earth to Sully.” Sully nodded toward the two, and when Spencer turned and saw them, he said, “Uh oh. Another casualty.”
The woman, clearly the girl’s caseworker, greeted the boys with a cheery “working hard?” before continuing up the walkway with her charge. Sully waited for the girl to look his way, and when she finally did, he offered her a soft, barely-there smile by way of hello. Part greeting, part commiseration. She instantly looked away.
They discovered her name only because she was sharing a bunk-bed with their friend Novah. “Cadence Livingston,” she told them. “She’s been in the system for a few years. She doesn’t talk much. Or at all. Those are the only things I was able to get from her. She’s probably halfway to being a mute.”
“I wish Spencer was a mute,” Sully muttered.
“Ha ha,” Spencer said. “You’re so funny. Absolutely hilarious. How did I get so lucky to have a brother like you?” Then he excused himself to see about fixing the eyesore Sully had made of the front lawn and left Sully fixated on the enigma of the quiet and elusive Cadence Livingston.

The premise of this book totally convinced me I needed to read the book. The cover caught my eye, too. The book started off fast, and I really liked it. There were a couple of things that I didn't like. Both of them had to do with the romance between Callie and Logan. I didn't feel the connection between the two of them at all. I really liked Callie, but Logan left me cold. I would have been happier with this book had they left the romantic part if it out. Only because for me it didn't work. It might have worked better if they had been life long friends and discovered they had feelings for one another rather than them being friends, not friends, to in love. But that's just one part of the story. I did like the storyline. It kept me flipping pages to the end and I'm curious to see where the author takes it from here.

I hadn’t realized Zane was finished until he sat the cup in front of me. He followed my line of sight as I looked away from the chair he’d been sitting in about six months ago when he held me as I cried. I closed my eyes, pushing that thought away. That girl was broken. She was damaged. That wasn’t me. Not anymore.
“Lili,” he whispered, and I cringed.
“Don’t call me that,” I said automatically, letting out my breath in a rush as the realization of what I’d said struck me. I opened my eyes, grabbing the mug. “Sorry.”
“What do you mean?” he finally asked as I sipped slowly on the hot liquid. It burned on the way down but I ignored it, needing the excuse not to answer that question.
“Just an automatic response. I’m fine,” I answered, blowing off what was happening.
“Would you stop fucking saying that?” he snapped, causing me to jump a little.
Startled, I kept my eyes on the mug but neither of us moved as we waited for the other to take the next step. Finally, I lowered the glass to the table.
“What would you like me to say? Hmm?” I knew I should stop, walk away now and not make this worse, but I no longer cared. “You want to know why I told you not to call me that?” I looked up, meeting his eyes. “Because I’m. Not. Fucking. Her. I’m not that girl.”
“Yes, you are—“ he started but I cut in before he could finish.
“No.” I laughed but the sound was hollow. “No, I’m not. You see this face and you think I’m her but I’m not. You’d be closer to the truth if you called Kaitlyn by that name.”
He flinched back from the name and I waivered, the part of me still able to feel guilt worming her way back in as I watched his expression.
“I should go,” I said, shoving myself up and away from his grip as he reached for me. I felt out of control and that was one thing I couldn’t handle these days.
“No. Fuck. Don’t leave. I just…” He stood, pacing away from me for a moment and locking his hands behind his head. Everything about him was familiar, from the line of his back to his mannerisms, to his frustrations. All of it was calling out to a part of me I wanted to find again but I didn’t know how. My eyes burned and I knew I was about to cry. I wasn’t ready for this. I’d thought I could handle it, I’d pushed myself to go to the roof and try with Zane because I knew I loved him. I love him so much. But I didn’t know how to do it anymore. I couldn’t seem to keep ahold of myself, of who I used to be. I was lost.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I’ll tell you what you need to know. I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I went back to school in my late twenties and studied Stage Production Technology. I now work full-time in the alterations shop of a major department store and part-time backstage in the various theaters around the area.
I’ve been an avid reader from a very young age and the top goal on my list of things to accomplish in my life was to write and publish a book. During the summer of 2013, while working backstage on The Lion King, the idea of Lili was born and I began writing Perfectly Broken.
