Book Review: Rome

Rome (Marked Men #3) by Jay Crownover: Sometimes the wrong choice can be just right . . .

Fun and fearless, Cora Lewis knows how to keep her tattooed "bad boy" friends at the Marked in line. But beneath all that flash and sass is a broken heart. Cora won't let herself get burned again. She's waiting to fall in love with the perfect man—a baggage-free, drama-free guy ready for commitment. Then she meets Rome Archer.

Rome Archer is as far from perfect as a man can be. He's stubborn, rigid, and bossy. And he's returned from his final tour of duty more than a little broken. Rome's used to filling many roles: big brother, doting son, supersoldier—but none of those fit anymore. Now he's just a man trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life while keeping the dark demons of war and loss at bay. He would have been glad to suffer through it alone, until Cora comes sweeping into his life and becomes a blinding flash of color in a sea of gray.Perfect may not be in the cards, but perfectly imperfect could just last forever . . .
TeriLyn's thoughts: 5 HUGE stars for Rome. I love the Marked Men series. Jay Crownover writes captivating stories with engaging characters. The writing flows so easily and the dual POV we get is awesome. I love seeing the development of the plot through both characters eyes. Crownover writes from the male and female perspective flawlessly. The family of Marked Men and their ladies that she has created will draw you in and make you want to stay and hang out for a long time. Her sense of family is something that is intrinsic to each of these characters whether it started out as friendships or not. The Marked family is a loyal, charismatic, funny, stubborn, colorful cast of characters that you can’t help but enjoy their stories of redemption and triumph even with the scary bumps along the way.

Cora is a great heroine. She’s broken hearted and guarded to a fault. But, she’s feisty, spunky, loyal, and a kind soul. Cora worships her friends and would do anything for them. I loved her character and the development of her throughout the entire book. She sees something in Rome that she can’t deny and as their feelings grow she begins to change before she even realizes its happening. Cora recognizes that Rome is fearful and fiercely works to protect him and heal him. In doing so, she fails to recognize the fear that is inside of her. Rome is a broken soul. He’s trapped in his own mind and confused about where he fits into the dynamic of their group and his family group. Cora brings color, beauty, and patience to his life. I absolutely loved reading from Rome’s POV. His progression through the book is so satisfying and heartwarming. Rome is a ‘gentle giant’ and all his actions toward Cora prove this in more ways than one. I loved reading about him. Through some emotional scenes and heated tension their story is really one of redemption. The reverence they hold for each other is vital to each of them. The colorful and detailed descriptions the author provides for both of them make you feel like they’ve really found something ethereal in each other. Neither is who the other ever dreamed of and it’s their story so much brighter and uplifting.

In Rome, we’re introduced to the character of Brite. Without giving anything away, he and Rome become very close and Brite mentors Rome in a silent, mysterious way. I adored this character and though he was great for Rome’s character development. We also get a heavy dose of Rome and Rule’s relationship, which I loved. It can be volatile and misinterpreted but at the heart of it these are two brothers who need and respect each other. Another interesting aspect of this book is the kinship between Rome and Asa. All the other secondary characters are back and do not disappoint. We see Rule and Shaw, Jet and Ayden, Nash, and Rowdy. I cannot wait to get my hands on Nash’s book. He’s an enigmatic character whose life gets more mysterious and flips on its axis at the end of Rome and I cannot wait to see where Crownover takes these characters next.

Book Review: Love Show

Love Show by Audrey Bell: Hadley Arrington is the career-driven editor-in-chief of her university’s prestigious newspaper. Jack Diamond is a laidback student whose good looks have made things even easier than they need to be. She’s the girl who came out of nowhere and kissed him in the rain. He’s the boy who made her do something crazy.

When the stakes seem too high, they have to decide if they’ll let their love show or if they’ll walk away for good.

TeriLyn's thoughts: **ARC generously provided by the author in exchange for honest review**

Love Show is the sweet, excellently written, funny story of Hadley Arrington. I loved this book; it hooked from the very beginning and before I knew it three and half hours had passed and I was finished. The story is just so good. It's not too dramatic or too flashy. Just the story of lost girl who doesn't know she's lost who meets the sweetest boy ever. It's simple. The development of their relationship is perfect. The has a lot of funny scenes. I found myself laughing out loud so many times.

This author has created two people are so completely opposite but equally as intriguing. Her character and plot development is simple yet so effective in drawing you to their story and making you want to be a part of it. Hadley's dream is to be a combat journalist. She's worked for this harder than anyone else. She consumes herself in school and the school's newspaper. On a dare, after she sees Jack Diamond, she kisses him and feels an instant connection. The way in which their relationship unfolds just demands that you keep reading it. I didn’t want to put it down. I really didn’t want it to end. You want to know what's going on in their lives and how they are going to make it what they've found last.

Jack Diamond is a perfect hero. His affection for Hadley is so sweet. When Hadley's roommate finds her neurosis a problem, Jack finds it endearing. He's immediately taken with her and constantly lets her know it just by giving her what she needs. Their conversations are my favorite parts of the book. Just the type of person Jack is attracts you to him so much. The secondary characters are good here, as well, along with their subplots. Love Show is a book that I say is the perfect beach read. Find a lazy day when you want an easy, simple, engaging love story between two intriguing people and pick Love Show. Hadley and Jack will not disappoint. I can't wait to read it again from my beach chair.

Book Review: Layers Peeled

Layers Peeled (Layers Trilogy #2) by Lacey Silks: Allie, a rookie cop hired and desired by a private investigator, is about to knock the wind out of Tristan with the biggest news of her life... ... right after the announcement that he fired her sinks in.
Tristan, the owner of Cross Enterprises, has a few surprises for Allie as well. And she won’t see them coming.
While the couple tries to deal with their predicament and growing romance, ghosts from Allie's past haunt her, slowly calculating the timing of their return.

With new assignments distracting Tristan, fate has stacked a threat against them. Can Allie and Tristan peel away their protective layers for long enough to see the danger brewing at their doorstep? If they don't work together, trusting and sharing information, it may be too late.

And history may repeat itself.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **ARC generously provided by publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**

Layers Peeled was not as exciting for me as Layers Deep. There were aspects that I like and some that I didn't prefer or confused me. Overall though the story is still entertaining and the story of Tristan and Allie is worth reading.

The plot of Layers Peeled picks right up where book one left off and leaves nothing hanging in the balance. I loved the way the book started up until about 30%. Tristan and Allie are gaining their footing as a genuine couple and becoming more emotionally available. Allie for some reason though in this book isn't as hard as she is in book one. Once she lets her guard down I felt like she lost a little bit of her edge. Then the storyline starts getting more involved and at times a bit confusing. Some of the plot gets confusing with Marissa and David Wright. I sensed a connection there but then something threw me. Then they were in Austria and Kendra came back and Sam sort of disturbed me with things she said to Allie. It all was just a lot coming at you without any real direction. However, the Tristan and Allie time in Austria is awesome. The way the author plays out their story is fantastic. The elements that make up the direction of their relationship are sweet, surprising, and cute. Without any of the outside issues, their story will satisfy you. It's the outer layers of the plot where the story gets a bit murky. I also think that there is a lot more to learn about the all the characters involved because of the timeline of how Layers Peeled ends so I'm interested to read the next installment to learn some more of those finer details.

I'm very pleased with how Tristan and Allie's love story ended and equally confused about some of the mysterious plot. Layers Peeled is intriguing, fast-paced, and enjoyable. I look forward to reading the next book.

Can she move forward or was she always destined to fall?
: Wow this started out hot and steamy and continued on throughout the whole book. I liked the characters they had quite a bit of spunk. I don't have anything bad to say about this book it just never really pulled me in to where it made me love it.

The only person willing to help her is the mysterious Ronan Sparrow a member of the League of Skull & Bones, one of the very groups that want her power. But what does Ronan want in return? Can Jess trust him or will she find herself alone with enemies on all sides?

The League of Skull & Bones, Book 1 of The Grimm Chronicles

This book is like most other paranormal-esqe type books but is completely different in the content. I liked how the characters traveled to different places and the world building was good but could have used a bit more details. I enjoyed the plot line and would have liked some more explanations on some things and a bit less on more trivial topics but I am sure that is to come in the following books. Overall a really good book and cant wait to read the next.

Book Review & Giveaway: Tick to the Tock

Tick to the Tock by Matthew Turner: Dante King is a young twenty something who discovers he’s dying. He won’t live to see his next birthday and time is ticking away to live life before it’s taken from him. With the help of his eccentric and wild-free friend, Wilbur Day, and stubbornly rational cousin, Ethan Knight, the three friends embark on a trip that takes them across Europe, Asia, Australia and beyond.

Dante clings to his past though and the many regrets he has, yearning for acceptance and finally understanding faith. He’s only loved once, and when Daniella Adams comes back in to his life, the pair realize how in love they are – but must battle what they previously did to one another.

This is a heart pulling journey of amazing scenery and adventurous ways, but built on a life that is soon to end. It follows the love of Danii and Dante, finally realizing how much they mean to each other but having it ripped away before their eyes. It’s about love and hardship between friends, family, and a dying son’s regret of not being better.

It’s a roller coaster ride of laughs and tears and making the most of life before it’s too late.
: A truly thought provoking book that takes you on journey. It really shows and teaches you to live life to the fullest no matter what life throws your way and to appreciate the small things along with the great. This book wasn't like any others that I have read and even though I could figure out the outcome I didn't want to stop reading. I love it when a book brings you in and makes you feel the emotions the characters are going through.

Excerpt:
Since the New Year, my headaches have reached new levels of pain. They were far from lovely before, but if given a choice, I would return in an instant.
My forgetful ways have increased, too, each day bringing blank patches scattered throughout. Yesterday afternoon, I bought a new stick of deodorant, having forgotten I already did so earlier that morning. Two days ago, I emailed my mother twice, both messages practically the same. And on New Year's Eve, I bought Danii a single flower on three separate occasions: her smiling nicely—somewhat pitifully—each time. Small, silly little moments, but I miss them... mourn them. I keep trailing off, too, and repeating sentences.
Ethan pretends not to notice, his replies instant and smooth, although I've caught myself a few times with him; Danii smiles and nibbles her lip, her twitching nose a sign she's worried... petrified, even; whereas Wil has to hold back his excitement, catching my faux pas and hesitating empty words.
I don't know, but I assume Ethan's spoken to him. Wil's like a curious young child seeing a black person for the first time and wondering why their skin is different to their own. He isn't nasty with it, merely at the mercy to his intrigue and unfiltered list of questions. I'm glad he holds back though. I catch some, but who knows how many forgotten seconds creep past my defenses. I don't want them pointing out. Some things are better lived in blind bliss.
Still, as of yet there have been no more seizures, which, together with our recent nocturnal lifestyle, has kept the mood light. Arriving in Sydney two days before the New Year was wise, because arriving on the day itself would be a nightmare far greater than any one headache could conjure. We embraced Australia's multicultural capital like almost any other tourist would: walking the Harbor, boating across the perfect sea, and gazing at the Opera House, although I couldn't say how it looks on the inside.
In many ways, it's the same as any other city: expensive. But at this time of year, with the sun so bright and the mood so high, it's easy to look past the unfortunate cliches and focus instead on the complexities of this cultural haven. That is, until mid-afternoon on New Year's Eve.
From the moment I first saw the famous Harbor blossom with every colour imaginable, as a thirteen-year-old boy bringing in the New Year with my parents in front of the TV, it's been a dream to spend the final seconds of one year, and the first few of the next, in the shadows of the bridge and Opera House. Bouncing and eager, I insisted we arrive early and scout an ideal location for our blanket.
At ten in the morning, it was quiet, just a few other groups mulling. Sharing sandwiches and boxed wine, we mingled with these fellow early morning soldiers, each can of lager growing warmer and more disgusting by the hour. By midday it was busier, but still our blanket held strong. At three, the grassy area was awash with sunlight, the spirit growing louder, more energetic, and we lost our early morning soldiers, but this was fine because others took their place.
By six, we stood, our blanket scrunched in the middle, as rowdy strangers bumbled over it.
At eight, the blanket was gone, and so was Wil. Danii clung to my hand, as Ethan stood on the other side of her.
By ten, a sea of strangers surrounded us, shoulder-to-shoulder. "I didn't think it would get this busy," Danii said, her nails digging into my fingers. I nodded, and turned to Ethan, but he, too, was now gone.
As midnight approached, excitement and anticipation were replaced with dread and a claustrophobic worry. "Sorry, mate," said a drunk Australian, stamping on my foot. "You got any beer?" asked an even drunker cockney, leaning in and filling my nostrils with an unbearable stench. "Happy New Year," blurted a short brunette, the drunkest of them all, grabbing Danii and I simultaneously, and kissing us both.
Laughing and doing our best to shrug off our surroundings, we remained clamped together, and with twenty minutes to spare, Ethan found his way back after a rather a long wait in the bathroom line. Tick, tock, tick, tock went the minutes, bringing the year's end closer. "I don't understand how everyone is so drunk," said Danii, a minute before midnight. "We haven't had a drink in hours. Where the hell are they finding it all?"
And then, in perfect Wilbur Day fashion, he stumbled into us, hugging us all—Danii included.
"This. Is. Marvelous!" he spat.
"Where have you been?" I asked, but he shrugged it off and began counting down, as did everyone around us, and soon the sky was alight with every color on the spectrum, and the sea of people, and tight conditions, and the headache that ate away at my temples... none of it mattered because I remembered watching it on TV nearly a decade earlier, and how I'd done so every year since; dreaming... wishing to be below the lit sky.
An engine roar of hope erupted from all directions as Auld Lang Syne was sung by the sea of multicultural synergy. Everyone seemed to sing but me. Instead, I stood still, mouth agape and in complete and utter awe. "This is amazing," I said to nobody but myself. But Danii heard. She squeezed my fingers and rested her head on my shoulder, and we both stood still, swarmed from all directions, but it didn't matter. It was a perfect moment that ticked and tocked, closing one year and opening another, and soon the fireworks stopped, and the singing ceased, and the crowd took us with them, and we were walking along the Sydney streets, and I was talking and laughing and celebrating with my friends and with people I didn't know, but it's all a haze, only, not because of a stolen memory on this occasion; rather, I was still standing at the Harbor, looking up towards the fiery sky at the second midnight landed, agape and in awe and at the mercy of its beauty.

Excerpt:

“Is this some secret recipe?” I ask as I watch Garret add spices to the pot.
“Yeah, and I’m not telling you what’s in it, so stop looking over my shoulder.”
“Why won’t you tell me?”
He sets the spices down and turns to me. “Because once you taste this chili you’ll want it again and again. And the only way you’ll have it again is if I make it. It’s another way for me to make sure you keep me around.”
I loop my arms around his neck, pulling him down for a kiss. “You don’t need chili for that. What you did before we got here makes me want to keep you around.”
“So you’re just using me for sex?”
“Pretty much.” I let go of him and turn toward the fridge.
He grabs me around the waist, hauling my backside against him and talking softly by my ear. “How is it possible that just being in here cooking with you is totally turning me on?”
“You, too? I thought it was just me.”
His hands move where they shouldn’t, making my legs so weak that I practically melt into him as he holds me.
“We’re not doing it in this house, Garret,” I say, breathless.
“I know. So stay with me tonight.” He moves my hair aside and kisses the side of my neck.
I force my legs to work again and turn to face him. “I want to, but I really need to be here with Frank.”
“It’s just overnight. Frank will be asleep. He won’t care if you’re gone while he’s asleep. I’ll make sure you’re back here first thing in the morning.”
“It’s tempting, but I still think I should stay here.”
He sighs and returns to the stove. “Okay. But you need to keep away from me because you’re driving me crazy. And stop rubbing up against me every time you walk by.”
“It’s a small kitchen. I can’t help it.” I go over to the stove and reach in front of him for the salt shaker, causing my butt to brush against his jeans.
He backs away. “Jade?”
“What? I need the salt.”
“You’re evil.”

Teaser 3
ExcerptMr. Felton stood facing the windows in a neatly pressed suit. The black tie complemented the black suit, designer from head to toe. His green eyes met my brown gaze, and I smiled, but only received the ghost of one in return.

Once the secretary left us, I searched the room, trying to take in every little detail: abstract art on the wall, a conference table in the back, and a lounge area in the middle. The afternoon light cast a yellow glow in the room. A large oak desk, which screamed business executive, had two chairs tucked in front. The room looked comfortable, welcoming, but also professional.

The red velvet curtains that overlooked the atrium were jerked closed.

"Hi, Finnley. Thank y—"

"It's Mr. Felton."

My face flushed. How could I be so inconsiderate and unprofessional?

I immediately felt stupid.

"Mr. Felton. Thank you for allowing me to interview. I've brought my resume and a list of recommendations. I'd love to join your accounting team if you'd allow me."

I outstretched my hand and he left me standing there, awkwardly. The smile faded from my face as he leaned against the wooden desk with his arms crossed.

"Take off your clothes." His voice was low and silky.

"Excuse me?" The words hit me like cool water.

I don't think so, asshole.

"The interview has begun, Ms. Downs. If you'd like to join my team, you will do what I say and if you'd prefer not, you are more than welcome to turn around and walk that tight ass through the door, and we can pretend as if this never happened."

The fierce tone behind his English accent made me cower. I froze as I calculated my next move.

What the f***?

The way he looked at me, exploring my body as if he were undressing me, made my stomach flip. No one had ever observed me that way. With a sprinkle of courage, I searched the blank matter-of-fact expression that covered his face. This man was all business.

As his long eyelashes hit the tops of his slightly sun-kissed cheeks, I closed my eyes to regroup my thoughts, then opened them quickly. I couldn't let my nerves get the best of me. He moved his messy hair behind his ears, and then sat on the desk, waiting, wanting, daring me to make my move.

"Have you decided? Or are we going to waste the good portion of my time daydreaming?"

I swallowed.

All I ever wanted to do was live in Vegas among the lights and fast-paced city. How did I get myself into this? Take off my clothes? I wasn't some cheap whore to be bossed around. The thought of undressing in front of him disgusted me… or did it?

My heart sped as he watched with a lust and want so fierce I shivered. It was now or never, you only live once, right?

I peered behind him and stared at the Vegas strip in the distance. With perfect plump lips, and straight white teeth, Mr. Felton smiled at me. In that very moment, I decided to gamble. I didn't know why because I wasn't much for risks. If anyone was a play-it-safe type of girl, it was me. But in that moment, I wanted to be someone different. I wanted to know the outcome of what waited on the other side. I played with lady luck to see what hand she dealt. Maybe I would get lucky.
