Read Emma's 5 Heart review here: Lifers

I started writing contemporary romance two years ago. Before that, I didn’t think I could write a sex scene. Turns out I can!

My lucky number is 13 because I was born on the 13th and live near a haunted castle by the ocean. My number one past-time is watching hot surfers get changed into (and out of) their wetsuits.

My husband doesn’t read my books. My mother does.
Writing is my love, my hobby, my total addiction. All my characters are important to me and whisper their stories, even when I’ve finished writing their books. That’s why you’ll often find bonus chapters/out-takes from various books, because those voices just won’t be quiet.

Book Review: Good Faith

Good Faith (Stewart Realty #8) by Liz Crowe: Strong personalities—volatile marriages—stressful careers—conflicting goals—difficult children.

Contemporary challenges facing close-knit families form the crucible that forges a new generation.

Brandis, Gabriel, Blair and Lillian emerge from the entanglement of their parents’ longstanding emotional connections, but one’s star will burn brighter – and hotter – than the others.

With a personality that consumes everyone and everything in its path, Brandis Gordon struggles to maintain control as he ricochets between wild success and miserable failure. His life proves how even the strongest relationships can be strangled by the ties that bind.

Brandis and Gabe Frietag are as close as any brothers, bound by both loyalty and fierce rivalry. The strength of their ultimate alliance is tested time and again by Brandis’ choices.

Companions from birth, Blair Frietag and Lillian Robinson share loner tendencies, but come to rely on each other through adolescence. As they mature, both are forced to confront their feelings for the men they knew as boys.

Somewhere between the tangle of good memories and bad, independence and addiction, optimism and despair, the intertwined destinies of the new generation finally collide, leaving some stronger, others broken, but none unscathed.

As a chronicle of three families navigating the minefields of teen years into the turbulence of young adulthood, Good Faith holds up a literary mirror to contemporary life with joys and temptations unflinchingly reflected. Its fresh, real-life voice portrays the sheer volatility of human nature, complete with the hopes, dreams, and unexpected setbacks of marriage, parenthood and “coming of age.
Lori's thoughts: When my co-blogger suggested I read this book, I'll admit, I was skeptical. For one thing, this is the 8th book in a series. I figured I'd be completely lost, since I had not read the other seven books. For another thing...I don't do long books. This is a long book compared to my usual reads. Print length is 522 pages, and lately, I have been content to stick with books about 1/2 that length. But, she raved about how good the book is and told me that I didn't have to read any of the other books in the series to "get it."

For several nights in a row, I was up WAY past my bedtime, flipping pages, wanting to know, what's next. I LOVED this book. My favorite character was Brandis. I was rooting for him and Blair the whole way, and even when she should have hated him, I didn't want her to. In my opinion, all dysfunction aside, they belonged together!

I've read several other reviews where people were disappointed by pieces of the ending. Was it a happily ever after, unicorns farting rainbows, and they rode into the sunset type of ending? No. But frankly, it could not have ended any other way - save one, and I'm not going to go there... :)

So, if you're looking for a book with real life, tough issues read this! Don't let the fact that it's the eighth book in the series or the fact that it's long, intimidate you. It might just inspire you to go read the other seven in order! It will sure help you appreciate good writing!

Excerpt:
That morning his father had roused him from a sound sleep. He’d blinked, confused, by the angle of the sunlight. He rarely slept much past eight since he usually had some sort of training or the other.“Let’s go son. Time for lunch.”Brandis had dragged himself up, his limbs feeling like they weighed a thousand pounds each. His brain buzzed with a strange sort of energy, his typical state, and not at all welcome considering it normally didn’t hit him until later in the day. The conversation his father began as soon as they were seated at their usual diner did not help.“So, listen, Brandis. These girls…Katie’s friends from college….”Brandis sipped his ice water, waiting for his father to finish the thought. His heart pounded, and his face flushed hot with embarrassment.Jack sighed, as if exasperated that Brandis didn’t pick up the thread on his own, leaving him to carry on with the awkwardness about to ensue. Then he leveled his gaze, his face open, not angry or judgmental. “I think that you may be in for some…I mean, they’re…shit.”“If you are gonna tell me where babies come from again,” Brandis said, after deciding to ease his father’s obvious distress. He cocked an eyebrow and half a smile. Jack seemed to relax somewhat as Brandis continued. “Don’t bother. I already know.”He flashed his brightest smile up at the middle-aged woman who stood at their table, coffee pot in hand. She blinked rapidly at him, and at that precise moment, Brandis got his first flash of…something…about his power. Up until now he’d merely been “Brandis the trouble maker, the causer of strife.” Suddenly, he felt strong, amazingly so, stronger than even the man sitting across from him, a taller, older version of himself. His body tingled all over, as he tested the smile out again on the woman, making her slop some coffee out onto the table. His father frowned, but then chuckled as the woman walked away after they gave their orders.“Son,” he said, leaning back and cradling the coffee mug to his chest. “Your adventure has only just begun.”“Huh?” Brandis picked up his cup but didn’t drink any. He hated coffee, but had ordered it in a burst of need to be more like Jack. As he sipped the bitter stuff, he was transported back years before when he and his dad would spend every single Saturday morning together, eating breakfast at this very diner. He had adored the man, he remembered distinctly. His chest hurt at the simplicity of their relationship then. He looked away from Jack’s deep blue, knowing gaze. The subject changed of its own accord, and Brandis let it. Although part of him wanted to ask for advice, a much bigger part would not allow the words past his lips. They ate, discussing the upcoming football season and Brandis’ part in it. The recruiting company Jack had contracted last year to video his every move would start up with the first game. He’d made varsity again, technically as backup quarterback to a senior boy. Brandis didn’t see this as a setback and had every intention of starting under center by the second or third game. Finally, when they pushed their empty plates back and sat looking at each other, Brandis felt more comfortable in his father’s presence than he had been in a long time. Jack said, “I am pretty sure at least one of those girls sleeping in the basement is determined to change the status of your virginity for you probably as soon as tonight.”Brandis choked on the last sip of lukewarm coffee. His face burned, and his body tingled again. “I’m…it’s…uh….” He clutched the napkin in his lap unable to meet his father’s eyes. “No need to say anything. Let’s just say your mother is an astute reader of female intent. While I was busy admiring your sister’s friend’s ass, she apparently read the girl’s mind or something.” Brandis’ face flushed even hotter. He resisted the urge to protest, to proclaim his innocence of such things. Because he wanted it back—those mornings between them, father and son, man and boy, not this awkward, man and almost-man bullshit. Because while the thought of one of his sister’s college friends popping his cherry remained a pleasant fantasy, it also made him feel older than he wanted to be right then.“So, I bought a box of condoms this morning,” Jack went on. “Put some downstairs in the side table drawer and the rest in your room. Use them please.” He sipped the last of his coffee, looked as if he were about to get up, then leaned forward, touching Brandis’ wrist. “Have fun. Don’t be an asshole to women. Let every experience teach you…something. Because you are nothing as a man if you don’t learn from every woman you…love.” Jack looked out the window onto the nearly empty parking lot. Then he turned back, tightened his grip on his son’s arm. “God, you are so…young.” His face fell a moment, then he perked up again, his eyes twinkling. “Okay, so, your mother told me to tell you not to let them corrupt you. But all I’m gonna say is this: always wear protection, no matter what, no matter how much you don’t want to. And don’t let your mom catch you in the act. I’ll handle her otherwise.”Then he let go, stood and smiled, draping a friendly arm around Brandis’ shoulders as they exited the restaurant.“You really didn’t tell me you were admiring Katie’s friend’s ass, did you, Dad?”“No, son. I most certainly did not. You obviously misheard me.” Jack winked as he stood by the passenger’s side of his classic Corvette convertible and tossed the keys to Brandis. “Remember what I told you. Don’t ride my clutch.”

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Chasing Wishes

Chasing Wishes by Nadia Simonenko: "I wish I didn't have to go home. I wish I was someone else—someone with a future..."

For sixteen-year-old Nina Torres, it feels as if life is nothing but a dead end. Despised by her rich classmates and afraid that she'll become just like her drug-addicted mother, Nina's future seems to get dimmer every day.

There is one bright spot in her life though...

Sitting beside her one night, the only person in the world who cares about her makes a promise. No matter what happens—no matter how much Isaac's wealthy family disapproves—he and his girlfriend Nina will be together forever.

Fate plays a cruel trick on Nina, though, and a visit from Child Protective Services the next morning turns Nina Torres into Irene Hartley, a woman with a future but who will never see her beloved Isaac again.

Nine years later, a blind and incredibly handsome young entrepreneur hires Irene to be his personal assistant. Terrence Radcliffe reminds her so much of Isaac that she can hardly believe her eyes, and she's falling for him fast. Irene knows that fairy tales don't come true, but she allows herself one last wish. She wishes that she could finally say goodbye to Isaac and let herself take a chance on Terrence.

What she doesn't know is that Terrence is also searching for someone: a shooting star who streaked through his life nine years ago, and he won't give up until he finds her...

Chasing Wishes is a powerful contemporary tale of lost love and wishes come true, recommended for ages 17+ due to adult content.
An Excerpt from Chasing Wishes by Nadia Simonenko
He raises a finger to his lips, loops his arm around mine and then guides me slowly toward the bed. My pulse quickens in excitement, beating faster and faster with each step closer to those exquisitely comfortable sheets, and then it skips a beat entirely as Terrence whispers into my ear.
"I'd like you to try something a little different tonight," he whispers, and I shiver in delight as his lips brush against my ear.
He sits cross-legged in the middle of the bed, and I climb up and sit beside him, first smoothing out my short black skirt as if trying to retain some modicum of decency and then giving up and sitting on my knees instead. Even though I know he can't see me flashing him, I still feel self-conscious about it for some reason.
"I hope you're not bored of me already," I tease.
Now that I'm sitting on the bed with him, sitting so near to him that I can feel his breath on my skin as he leans in close, my imagination fills with all sorts of delightful ideas and desires. I can think of plenty of things that would be 'different' and I'm intrigued to find out what he's thought up.
He shakes his head and smiles knowingly, and then my breath catches in my throat as he pulls a black satin eye-mask with delicate lace trim from the back pocket of his jeans.
"Put this on, please," he tells me, and he gently presses the blindfold into my hand and closes my fingers around it.
"And then what?" I ask, tugging nervously on mask's elastic band and running my fingers along its soft lace. I don't know what I'd been expecting him to say, but I'm surprised at a blindfold being involved.
"Let me take charge tonight, Irene. Just trust me," Terrence whispers mischievously. He leans in to kiss me but misses my lips and gets me on the cheek instead.
"No whips, chains, handcuffs, anything like that, right?" I ask worriedly as an inkling of panic rises inside me.
"Of course not," he answers, raising an eyebrow incredulously. "Why does everyone think that's sexy these days?"
"I blame Fifty Shades," I joke, and he laughs and shakes his head.
"None of that, I promise. Just trust me, Irene."
I let out a sigh of relief as the tension in my shoulders relaxes. Thank heaven he's not into that sort of thing. I'm sure it's fun for some people, but I'm not touching that stuff with a ten-foot pole.
"Trust you, huh?" I repeat, and he nods silently.
Even though I trust him—I trust him more than anyone since… well, since Isaac, really—I'm still a little nervous. I don't know where he's going with this once the mask goes on, but how far could he go if he's promising not to tie me up?
He could be about to take pictures of me while I'm not expecting it. What wonderful blackmail material that'd be.
No way… he wouldn't do something like that. My doubts have gone so far overboard that even I don't believe them now.
"You don't have to if you're not comfortable," he says, but as he reaches out to reclaim the mask, I yank it away from him and stretch the elastic over the back of my head. The soft black fabric slides down over my eyes and my pulse pounds in my head as darkness engulfs me.
"It's on, Terrence," I say, my voice wavering with a strange blend of excitement or trepidation.
"Thank you," he whispers in my ear, and then he unexpectedly kisses me…

Book Review: Lifers

Lifers by Jane Harvey-Berrick: After eight years in prison, twenty-four year old Jordan Kane is the man everyone loves to hate.

Forced to return to his hometown while on parole, Jordan soon learns that this small town hasn't changed since he was carted off to juvie all those years ago. He is the local pariah, shunned by everyone, including his own parents. But their hatred of him doesn't even come close to the loathing he feels every time he looks in the mirror.

Working odd jobs for the preacher lady, Jordan bides his time before he can leave this backwards town. But can distance erase the memories that haunt him? Trapped in the prison of his own mind Jordan wonders if the pain of living will ever subside?

Torrey Delaney is new in town and certainly doesn't behave in a way the locals believe a preacher’s daughter should. Her reputation for casual hook-ups and meaningless sex is the talk of the town. Add that to her budding friendship with the hardened ex-con handyman, and the good Reverend is less than thrilled with her estranged daughter’s path.

As friendship forms, is it possible for two damaged people who are afraid to love take their relationship to the next level? Can Torrey live with Jordan’s demons, and can Jordan break through Torrey's walls? With the disapproval of a small town weighing heavily on them, will they find their place in the world? Can they struggle against the odds, or will their world be viciously shattered?

Is love a life sentence?

Due to scenes of a sexual nature, not recommended for under 18.
Emma's thoughts: 5 Bright Shining Stars!

I was given an ARC of Lifers in return for an honest review and boy I did I love it, amazeballs!

Ok, so I'm gonna keep this review as spoiler free as possible, don't want to be spoiling it for anyone.

This book is about the very hot, brooding, sexy Jordan Kane who has been in prison for 8 years and is forced back to his hometown on parole and trust me when I say small towns don't change, people treat him like something you would scrape of your shoe but that's nothing compared to how Jordan feels about himself - I seriously wanted to hug and comfort him (amongst other things) lol.

Then we meet the sassy Torey Delaney, she's new to town and the Preacher's daughter, she is definitely not your typical idea of what a Preacher's daughter should be like but she has issues and insecurities of her own.

So Jordan becomes the Preacher's handyman, friendship forms between him and Torrey as does their feelings and some major sexual tension..... so I'm gonna leave it there and not tell u anymore, what I will say is READ IT!!

I so loved this book, I was completely hooked, I couldn't put it down but when I had to I was still thinking about it and was trying to work out what was gonna happen next. LIFERS pulled at my heartstrings in a major way and I am so glad Jane let me read it.

So to Jane Harvey-Berrick....... congratulations on another fantastic book, you truly are an amazing author and I can't wait to get my hands on your next book, don't keep us waiting too long!

I got up, tagged last night’s jeans from the floor, and hastily pulled them on.I found the remaining pieces of her scattered clothing and threw them at her.“Get dressed and get out.” Succinct and decisive.I didn’t make the slightest attempt to soften my words. Her lips thinned. “Turn around while I put them on.”“Babe, I’ve already seen everything you got. MICHELLE MANKIN is the author of the Black Cat Records series of novels. Romance with subtext. For many years she worked in the insurance industry as an underwriter. Release Blitz: Kaleidoscope

Kaleidoscope (Colorado Mountain #6) by Kristen Ashley: When old friends become new lovers...anything can happen.

Sexy, gifted, and loyal, PI Jacob Decker is a tall, cool drink of perfection who had Emmanuelle Holmes at "hello." His relationship with Emme's best friend kept them apart for years, but things have changed. Now that a case has brought him to Gnaw Bone, Colorado, the road is wide open for Emme and Deck to explore something hotter and deeper than Emme dreamed possible. So why is she sabotaging the best thing that's ever happened to her?

It isn't easy to catch Deck off guard, but Emme does just that when she walks back into his life after nine long years. The curvy brunette had her charms back in the day, but now she's a bona fide knockout . . . and she wants to rekindle their friendship. Deck, however, wants more. Emme's always been the one; she excites Deck's body and mind like no other woman can. But a dark chapter from Emme's past overshadows their future together. Now only Deck can help her turn the page-if she'll let him . . .
TeriLyn's thoughts: So I'm in love with Jacob Decker. Felt it in Breathe. Knew it in Kaleidoscope. This is up there with Sweet Dreams and Lady Luck for me. The story is classic Kristen Ashley but this has an added element I haven’t seen from her. These two were friends, soul deep friends, before they were together and I adored that aspect of their relationship. I love a story where two friends become lovers. The shift in that type of relationship while maintaining the friendship is beautiful. The writing is classic Kristen Ashley; conversational and descriptive. Deck and Emme had alternating POV’s which made it awesome. I loved being able to get inside Deck’s head. The plot is psychological from Emme’s point of view and her back story is unique. Their story is fluid and interesting. Kaleidoscope is another perfect example of how Kristen Ashley absorbs you into her worlds making it really hard to let it go when it’s over. Deck and Emme are characters you become addicted to and stay with you long after you’ve finished reading their story.

Emmanuelle Holmes is a great female lead. She’s a tragic Cinderella story. Her friendship with Deck means a lot to her, he means a lot to her. Emme treasured their friendship enough to let it go when she knew he needed it. When she sees him again, at the beginning of their story, it’s like a breath of fresh air for her and thanks to Ms. Ashley’s superb writing you feel that even through Deck’s POV. Emme is compassionate, smart, funny, honest, and beautiful all rolled into one deeply damaged package. On the outside Emme is solid. However, Deck brings out repressed feelings that Emme has buried for a long time. Her physical transformation is astounding to everyone who knew her back when; her psychological transformation unfolds and breaks your heart in Kaleidoscope. And seriously, with a name as kick ass as Emmanuelle you know she’s going to be something special.

Jacob Decker is one of my favorite Kristen Ashley men. Those are big shoes to fill. I felt a lot about Deck in Breathe. We got a great sense of his character in Chace and Faye’s story so I knew his story would be nothing short of awesome and I’m glad I had that instinct. He’s funny, brilliant, bad ass, protective, and loyal. Deck’s compassion for those he loves is amazing. His flirting and banter is first class. I would love nothing more than to verbally spar with Deck. He, too, treasures his friendship with Emmanuelle. He was young and blinded when he knew her previously so he couldn’t see just how deep their connection was. When he realizes this presently, he is determined to stop at nothing to make her realize it too. I don’t want to spoil what the significance of Kaleidoscope is in the story. It’s a crucial part to their story. However, I feel it’s important to note that it is crucial as in a melt your heart, earth shifting on its axis, what epic love stories are made of, type of crucial. Just. Plain. Awesome.

Kristen Ashley did it again. She always does it. I am addicted to her stories. Not only for the bad ass alpha men, but for the bas ass, inspiring women too. I love that she writes strong women. Even if their broken, their strength is unrivaled. Her sense of family and how important it is always gets me. Not just the importance of actual family, but that of incredible friendships. The Colorado Mountain men and women are group of people that you want to spend time with and have them have your back. My only complaint is that this seemed shorter than the other stories and I wish there was a bit more to the epilogue. But it’s certainly not anything that would lover my opinion of Deck and Emme’s story; because Kaleidoscope is brilliantly bright. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have read it. It’s one I’ll re-read again and won’t ever forget.

About the author:Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.  And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Bad Boys Blitz

Would you take another shot at love? Or just settle on a friend with benefits?

THEIR HEARTBREAKING PAST WILL MOVE YOU. THEIR PASSION WILL MAKE YOU BLUSH. THEIR ANTICS WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD.

Twenty-five-year-old Natalie Davenport lugs substantial baggage. One boyfriend after the next has been a total disaster, leaving Natalie distrustful toward the male population in general. So when Colin Hampton crosses her path, she’s cautious. Her heart (and some other body parts!) nudges her to go for it, while her head wants her to run for the hills.

Colin is one of those gorgeous guys who attract women, no matter the age or marital status. With a successful career at a popular Seattle radio station, hard body, and charming personality, he is the complete package. But something dark lurks in the corners of his soul; some murky experience that has changed him—maybe for the better, but maybe for the worse.

Will he steal her heart and stomp over it like other guys did?

Will she let him into her heavily fortified world despite herself?

Or will they settle somewhere in the middle—establishing the emotional boundaries to protect them from falling in love?

How far would you go to protect the one you love?

Edge-of-the-seat suspense and zany wit are key elements of this comedy-mystery that combines crime and mayhem with romance and humor.

The terrors of Colin’s past are revealed and accepted by Natalie. Her doubts about letting him into her life are finally disbanded and replaced by a sense of security and commitment. But Natalie doesn’t know that Colin’s past hides more dark secrets unknown even to him.

When a delusional psychopath threatens Colin’s life, things quickly become complicated. Natalie’s stubborn character and desire to kick ass won’t let her step aside and allow the authorities to handle the danger. She gets herself tangled up with street hoodlums, befriends a Russian mobster’s high-maintenance girlfriend, and becomes expert at picking locks and hiding evidence.
