Paulo Coelho – The Alchemist
Combining magic, mysticism, wisdom and wonder into an inspiring tale of self-discovery, The Alchemist has become a modern classic, selling millions of copies around the world and transforming the lives of countless readers across generations.
Paulo Coelho’s masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different—and far more satisfying—than he ever imagined. Santiago’s journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and, above all, following our dreams.
At the time, a part of him wants to take the chance of searching, while another part of him want him to continue with his ease of life, the mysterious king of Salem convinces Santiago that he has succeeded in discovering his personal legend. The old king tells Santiago that following his personal legend to its conclusion is a person’s only real obligation in life.Santiago listens to his heart and decides to follow the dangerous path leading to the treasure. He sells his flock of sheep and herds in Africa, where he is robbed of all his gold and left despondent on the streets. He feels he was foolish to believe in his dreams and starts working with a crystal merchant in order to save enough to get him back home. After a successful year, Santiago earns plenty and while walking down the streets to go back home, he ponders over taking a chance and continuing his search.
He joins a caravan to make the dangerous crossing across the desert, and as he rides along he begins to understand the Soul of the World. When the caravan makes it to an oasis, Santiago meets a girl named Fatima and struck by love at first sight. The local Alchemist, another mysterious man who reminds him of the old king, helps Santiago continue his journey across the desert, teaching him vital life lessons along the way. Santiago unknowingly evolves as a wise man, and is resolved to follow his dream to its end despite leaving his love behind at the oasis.
I have a feeling that a part of the story relate to me as I pursued my own personal legend. Like the shepherd, my journey started with an initial vision and my willingness to pursue it. I didn’t have any idea of how I would achieve the goal but I knew that I had to do it. And I did – reach destinations successfully!
And, been so lucky years ago while at Asian Age to be introduced to this wonderful Author when I was Official Blogger and VA to M J Akbar, then Editor who later even became MoS External Affairs…

"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." – Paulo Coelho

Some quotes I like :
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” “It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”
“When we love, we always strive to become better than we are.
“I have seen many storms in my life. Most storms have caught me by surprise, so I had to learn very quickly to look further and understand that I am not capable of controlling the weather, to exercise the art of patience and to respect the fury of nature.”

Books Help us slow down : International Children’s Book Day 2019
International Children’s Book Day falls on 2nd April on the Birthday of Hans Christian Andersen.
Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, 2 April, International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children’s books.
Each year a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be the international sponsor of ICBD. It decides upon a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. These materials are used in different ways to promote books and reading. Many IBBY Sections promote ICBD through the media and organize activities in schools and public libraries. Often ICBD is linked to celebrations around children’s books and other special events that may include encounters with authors and illustrators, writing competitions or announcements of book awards.
IBBY Lithuania is the sponsor for International Children’s Book Day 2019.
2019 Theme : Books Help Us Slow Down
MESSAGE FROM IBBY Lithuania WITH THEME Books Help Us Slow Down
Do we really need to announce that on April 2nd we are celebrating the International Children’s Book Day? Launched by the International Board on Books for Young
People, it will take place for the fifty third time!
Do we really need to remind you that April 2nd is also the birthday of the world-renowned Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen?
Ever since 1967, these two occasions are the cause of one big celebration. Both of them are dear to the members of the Lithuanian section of IBBY and Lithuanian readers. We have a special bond with Andersen. The shores of Lithuania and Denmark are washed by the same Baltic Sea, and Lithuanian readers have enjoyed reading Andersen’s work in the Lithuanian language since the end of the 19th century. Oh, and did you know that Lithuanian, being one of the oldest Indo-European languages, captures the spirit of Andersen’s fairytales beautifully? In recent years Lithuanian has been used even more to capture the spirit and ideas of the world’s best and most famous authors of books for children and young adults, making Lithuania proud of its abundance and variety of translations. We are truly open to other cultures, with most works being translated from the original. Sometimes we even say that there is no language in the world not spoken by at least one Lithuanian.
Needless to say, we are proud to have a number of talented children writers and illustrators. We are glad to see their work gaining prominence and recognition around the world. Kęstutis Kasparavičius is one of Lithuania’s most famous and talented
writers and illustrators. It was only natural to ask him to create the ICBD’2019 poster and address readers.
Lithuania is in the very geographical center of Europe, and we sometimes say that it stands at the crossroads of European history. Our own history is very long and, no doubt, very complex. Trying to describe this complexity in a few short sentences would be inconsiderate and even foolhardy. It suffices to say that last year Lithuania marked
one hundred years of restored independence!
Let’s add, tongue in cheek, that one of the happiest events in our modern history was joining IBBY in 1993. We are expanding our activities by the year and as we grow the celebration of the International Children’s Book Day is becoming bigger, better and more creative. It is our pleasure and privilege to be sponsors of this day in 2019
Books help us slow down
I’m in a hurry! … I don’t have time! … Good-bye! … We hear words like that almost every day, not only in Lithuania, which is in the very centre of Europe, but in many other places of the world. No less frequently do we hear that we live in the age of information overload, haste and rush.
But if you take a book into your hands, you immediately feel a change. It seems that books have this wonderful quality – they help us slow down. As soon as you open a book and delve into its tranquil depths, you no longer fear that things will whizz by at a maddening speed while you see nothing. All of a sudden, you come to believe you don’t have to dash off like a bat out of hell to do some urgent work of little importance. In books, things happen quietly and in a precisely arranged order. Maybe because their pages are numbered, maybe because the pages rustle gently and soothingly as you leaf through them. In books, events of the past calmly meet events that are yet to come.
The universe of a book is wide open; it happily fuses reality with imagination and fantasy. And sometimes you wonder if it was in a book or in life that you noticed how beautifully the drops of thawing snow drip from the roof, or how pleasing to the eye is the neighbour’s wall overgrown with moss. Do you know from a book or from reality that rowan berries are not only beautiful, but also bitter? Was it in a book or in reality that you were lying in the summer grass, or sitting with your legs crossed, watching clouds sail across the sky?
Books help us not to rush, books teach us to notice things, and books invite us or even make us sit down for a while. We usually read sitting, with a book on our desk or in our hands, don’t we?
And haven’t you experienced another miracle – that when you read a book, the book reads you?Yes, of course, books can read. They read your forehead, eyebrows, the corners of your lips as they rise and fall, but, first and foremost, books read your eyes. And looking into your eyes, they see… Well, you know what!
I am sure that books are never bored when they are in your hands. Someone who enjoys reading – be it a child or adult – is much more interesting than someone who doesn’t care for books, who is always racing against the clock, who never has time to sit down, who fails to notice much of what surrounds them.
On the International Childrenʼs Book Day, my wish to all of us is:
Let there be interesting books for readers and interesting readers for books!

Pampered Child Syndrome
Pampered Child? Over pampered Parenting ?
At a time, our Children are precious and we all tend to pamper them – a wee bit here and there !
We understand that parents want to make them feel special and so do all Grandparents. It is a joyous phase of life but pampering right way is infinite love. They feel wanted and secure. However, draw a line – too much of Attention and too many Gifts is only going to spoil the child. The pampered child soon becomes the demanding child and a tyrant in the family. They will have no value for all you bring, you do, you give. Wanting everything, the pampered child will stop at nothing to get what they want. Tantrums, pouting, sulking, refusal to do school work, refusal get out of bed, go out, do chores and countless other tactics are used to dominate parents into giving in to their endless needs and demands.
The pampered child has all qualities of rude behaviour, arrogance, selfishness, ego, aggressive, violent and impatient so says my research findings. Destructive and distracted, the child grows up to be an adult who parents child selfishly. Every Parent should endeavor to teach them responsibility, accountability, humility and respect – set these examples first and guide them with love and understanding. There is no point in instilling fear, shouting or spanking the child and treating him bad while on the other hand shower gifts and show love when he is at fault.
The effects of a Pampered child :
The child has the tendency to take everything for granted
* The child begins to appreciate the abundance of money from an innocent age
* The child has to take no effort to learn or do anything challenging of his own. Always someone else is available to do it for him
* The child perceives people without money as unworthy and inferior
* The child has no creative tendencies
* The child is a prolific liar in getting whatever he wants, at any cost
* The child has more of anything than his peers do. If his peer has one video game, an extremely pampered child has more than one
* Significant loss of interest and short attention span from the child is another major symptom. Even if he may have all of the latest video game consoles, he may not find any of them interesting after a few days
* The child is obstinate to the point of disrespecting elders
* The child uses expletives without realizing their shock effect
So next time, knowingly or unknowingly, you pamper a child – check these four words “I can’t afford it” and make sure, you tactfully teach the child lessons of life to grow up gracefully.

Magical Moments
Something magical happens when parents turn to Grandparents as Guardian of kids. They remember and revive their own Parenting when upbringing their own kids. The hardship faced in balancing the work front, home and Children is demanding and challenging. As a Parent, sometimes you just want to disappear!
Today, Parenting is important as Tag Parenting has been on rise as joint family concept is fading. Authoritarian Parenting with belief, “my way or go to highways” miss out on feelings of Children as they think this is spoiling the child. They do not involve kids in problem solving challenges instead they make rules and enforce punishments instead of discipline. Children of authoritarian parents are at a higher risk of development self-esteem problems because their opinions aren’t valued.
Children need the love and care. As such, they are demanding and feel insecure at times. Their Attitude solely depends on Parenting styles which differ from Authoritarian to Authoritative, Permissive or Uninvolved Parenting on which I have penned on Authoritarian Parenting elaboratively.
Intriguing research has shown a link between the way a parent interacts with a child and physiological changes in kids. So, point is, It’s not surprising that a parent-child relationship that’s often filled with conflict or neglect would have a negative effect on kids’ emotional or mental health. Beware!

Responsible Parenting : Be the Parent your children need
The greatest gift a Parent can give to children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence. Parents are the ultimate Role Models for children. Every word, movement and action has an impact on the child. Their influence is greater than any other person known to the child. Stephen Covey said, “Parents are handling life’s scripts to their children, scripts that in all likelihood will be acted out for the rest of children’s lives.
Parenting is important as Tag Parenting has been on rise as joint family concept is fading.
When we talk about Authoritarian Parenting, it can also be stated as Autocratic Parenting. Parents’ attitude towards the child is more demanding, more expectations and less being responsive to the needs and wants of the child. This style of Parenting is focused on Obedience, Discipline, Control and being Authoritarian. They expect the child to do what they say and want. They follow Strict Rules, give punishments and even offer no choices. They often hurt the self esteem of the child with their rude, rough and unacceptable attitude. They are intolerant and ashamed of their behaviour with the ‘shouts and yells’ that irk anyone. They almost spank and show fear of monsters or slap the child for their unwanted behaviour. When a child wrongs, the whole world starts rotating at speed that such parents can’t handle the situation and try solve the issue. Instead of understanding why the child behaves the way he does, the parent will turn off the tables without finding the reason why he did that he shouldn’t.
The impact is bound to be Negative. Ultimately, the consequences are bound to be Negative than Positive as the child is the target of their own behaviour. Some common effects are:
Low self esteem
Bad social manners
Lack of self discipline
Indecisiveness
Insecurity
Moody to creativity
Behaviour problems
Academic performance deters
Hyper
Anxiety
Obesity
Intolerant
Such children have found to be Rude and Angry though they are good at heart. They allow their frustrations at a pace gradually on others and are often ridiculed, bullied by other students due to their attitudinal straits. Children need the love and care. As such they are demanding and feel insecure at times. They are even overburden and stressed due to many a reasons; one is academic and peer pressures. Their Attitude solely depends on Parenting styles which differ from Authoritarian to Authoritative, Permissive or Uninvolved Parenting. The psychological changes in children are attributed to the way a Parent interacts and show the impulsive behaviour. So, its not surprising that a parent child relationship thats often filled with conflict and neglect would have negative effect on a child’s emotional or mental behaviour.
Authoritarian Parenting isn’t all bad as revealed by researchers. The impact is significantly ‘Positive’ when it comes to :
Being Responsible. Children of Authoritarian Parenting tend to bear responsibility and form a habit as they age.
Disciplinary effects. Children of Authoritarian Parenting often are scared if they break the rules and bear consequences if they do so. Hence, they behave properly.
Good Environmental surroundings. Children of Authoritarian Parenting often have good environmental surroundings as to the safety – keeping distance from bad friends and bad things as they are moulded right.
Passionate and Enthusiasm. Children of Authoritarian Parenting are often found to be Passionate and enthusiastic in all they do. They deem not to be a failure and forms this a part of habit of outshining in all they do.
Clearly Focused. Children of Authoritarian Parenting have clear focus and do what they want. They are stubborn and set to reach their goals by following their heart and doing what they want to do.
So, you see, The Positive and Negatives of this Authoritarian Parenting style is often confusing. However, choose the right style of being Authoritative rather than Authoritarian as the negative impacts stand more. If a parenting style is Authoritarian, quickly sort for this:
Keep Patience. First and foremost is be PATIENT. It is a virtue to have Patience especially with children.
Listen and Talk. Open Communication without Anger works Positive. Keep Cool and Listen. Talk and Discuss. How often a child will reveal what he thinks and a Parent will also realize where they are wrong in managing and need a change.
Mistakes and they Teach. Learn from your own mistakes and let children learn from their mistakes. Every tiny step taken climbs to top. Let not the kids stumble.
Set Limits but be practical.
Be decisive by being expressive and caring
Parenting is all about living life together and raising healthy children. It’s fun all the way – be flexible, be understanding, be considerate and over and above, be loving, humble, kind and positive. Give Respect to the child and he respects you. Speak loving words and he reverts the same way. Build confidence and the child hold your fingers to climb the steps with confidence.
The best kind of a Parent you can be is to lead by example. Your influence is absolute as they initially learn from Parents, than teachers and than their surrounding environment. There are no set rules or a guide for you to follow as a parent. Parenting depends on your family set-up and the societal environment that you live in but as experts have broadly divided parenting into various styles with the prominent ones – authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles, it is a check to your own Parenting Style and adopt by first demonstrating goodness within self and setting examples as it often bounce back. Just remember, Children are Observers and they are the best judge. To be a peaceful Parent, educate self to Respect self and others, promote simplicity, let go off the worries and fear, give yourself and your family a healthy diet and healthy environment. Absence of this may lead to conflicts in couples too. Not to go in detail, it sums up all that, “Better couples with healthy relationships spend quality time together and raise happy children.”
It is your Life, Sure it affects others too ! Happiness is what you choose or shrug off the blues!

Dhuleti colors – Krishna’s Playful Pranks with Radha and Gopis
All Vedic Literatures agree that Krishna is the source of Brahma, Shiva and all other demigods. During Holi, the festival of Dhuleti is Love and Leela of Radha Krishna which comes alive. Lord Krishna, and his playful prank by using abeer gulal (colours) on Radha Rani and Gopis of Braj Bhumi is a well known tale.
Lord Krishna Express his jealousy for Radha’s fair complexion. Baby Lord Krishna complains his mother Yashoda Ji about the injustice of nature for his dark complexion and asks his mother why Radha Rani has fair complexion? Looking to his innocent style of questioning and at the same moment observing sadness on his beloved child’s face, Yashoda Ji playfully suggests Lord Krishna smear colour on Radha Rani’s face and change her complexion to any colour he wants. Fascinated by the idea, Lord Krishna proceeds to do so and thus smears colour on the face of Radha Rani.
Lord Krishna didn’t only smear colour on the face of Radha Rani but also played this lovable prank with other Gopis using water jets called ‘Pichkari’. And this way this small and beautiful incidence dramatised by Lord Krishna and Radha Rani left an impact in hearts of thousands of Braj-vasis (people who reside in North India, i.e., Uttar Pradesh).
This legend is wonderfully brought alive each year all over India, particularly in Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana and Nandgaon-the places associated with Krishna and Radha.
In fact, the entire country gets drenched in the colour waters when it is time for Holi and celebrate the immortal love of Krishna and Radha.
Hence, till this date, use of colours and pichkari is rampant in Holi.
In some states of India, there is also a tradition to place the idols of Radha and Krishna in a decorated palanquin, which is then carried along the main streets of the city. All this while, devotees chant Krishna’s name, sing devotional hymns and dance in the name of the lord.
Radha’s love for Krishna personifies the aspiration of the living being to merge with God. Krishna’s flute is a call of the divine and Radha responds to his call as human soul. She expresses unconditional love and surrenders to the Divine.

World Book Day & Copyright Day
April 23 we recall Shakespeare Literature as we observe World Book and Copyright Day. This day, Unesco seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. On 23rd April, great personalities, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George’s Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold.
The original idea of World Book Day was of the Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes, who died on April 23. The date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
Google doodle also celebrates the incredible work of the Bard of Avon with beautiful illustration.
The illustrations depict some of his most iconic plays appeared at the far left and right, with the playwright himself in the middle.
The depiction of his plays included Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, King Lear, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
A book is a link between the past and the future. It is a bridge between generations and across cultures. It is a force for creating and sharing wisdom and knowledge.
A window onto our inner lives, books are also the doorway to mutual respect and understanding between people, across all boundaries and differences.
Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO
Shakespeare occupies a unique position in world literature. His works include 37 plays, including comedy, Tragedy and Historical along with Poems, sonnets. Shakespeare is astonishingly clever with words and images, so that his mental energy, when applied to intelligible human situations, finds full and memorable expression, convincing and imaginatively stimulating and to read his stuff is a rich experience for a life time. It has ever been great to read ‘Romeo & Juliet’, Hamlet, Midsummer Night’s dream, Tempest, As you Like It, Merchant of Venice, King Lear and all the stuff that we taught in Literature Lessons at School.
A lot is said on Shakespeare on the web but here is Kidsfreesouls Literature page that you may like.
Frank Kafka once said, “a book must be an ice-axe to break the seas frozen inside our soul.”

9. Conduct group discussions about the Author’s story. Eg. Cinderella or Snow White. Verbal reviews of the book helps. Later, they can write down
10. Let children enjoy a class of Technology learning – finding Literature characters, classic Literature websites, Quotes, etc.
11. Give them a Bag and add story books, poetry books and scrap book. Let them write reviews and poetry in the scrap book with supportive drawing and coloring fun.
10. Organize Literary parties. Children are excited to do something new on their birthdays. Let the birthday girl make a Literature Project along with five friends prior to the birthday. On the great day, let there be Literature Theme Party. Hang posters of characters, poems, quotes. Arrange a Stage and let these prepared children show their Projects and talk about the characters to the invitee kids. A 20-30 minute presentation followed by poetry recitations and singing rhymes. Kids can later enjoy Literature theme food like cakes, burgers, sandwiches – maybe what the Literature story characters ate.
There are various Literature websites and Guides on the web. You may also find books on Literature in the Library or book stores. Classic Literature for kids and Children’s Literature need to be appropriately selected and should be made fun and learn. Often, an illustrated Literature is enjoyable and you can find Popular Contributions to Children’s Literature as per the Wiki. Find Dr. Seuss in Resources section and For Kids. Enjoy.
