Friendship Day: Joy of Friendship
It takes courage to find the truth. Only few people have dared to discover it, it is risky and may shatter all your dreams, break the illusions, says Osho. As Kids Free Souls ponder over, it is a journey of the heart towards the truth and build a courage to walk into realms of peace. Only silence communicates the truth as it is and the experiences that we encounter on the way are encompassed in moments of peace as truth prevails. The two fold mingling of truth and silence leads to peace but without unity, no peace is attained afterall:-)
Friendship is the intensity of the love that leaves behind trails of sweet memories to cherish the core of life giving a whole new meaning to it.
The enigma of friendship strengthens with the bonds of relationships so unique which is unselfish, intimate, pure and beautiful. Learning to appreciate, speak out on issues, Listening, confide and sharing secrets, meeting of wavelengths and such deeper corners are focused for a caring friendly relationship with the people you love most.
Whenever it’s a Friendship Day, Kidsfreesouls wishes all readers Happy Friendship day with a simple message to spread love, faith, peace and unity among human beings. A day when someone asked me, ‘How?’, I was confused what to reply on a simple icq screen. Today, with the Social networks and people hanging on making a 3/4/5 digit friends lists, the message can be spread far and wide. The question ‘How’ can turn to ‘Somehow’ and all humans together can make efforts to spread the message to spread peace! The world is on brink of extinction, Is it? Whatever, we can make a Difference!
JOYS OF FRIENDSHIP
That’s what Friends are For…In good times, in bad times….
ll our friends light the candle of our life with warmth and happiness. Sometimes, face to face, its hard to say the things we could but between Good Friends, unspoken thoughts are always understood. And then “Silence speaks a thousand words” This Friendship day, I wish all Kidsfreesouls “Happy Friendship Day” and may this small prayer build our spirits to spread love, faith, peace and unity among human beings.
God Make me worthy…
It is joy in life to find at every turning of the road,
The strong arm of a comrade kind,
To help me with my onward load,
And since I have no gold to give,
‘Tis love alone must make amends,
My only Prayer is while I live
“God Make me worthy of my Friends”
I believe that its
God’s might to direct us,
God’s power to protect us,
God’s wisdom for learning,
God’s eye for discerning,
God’s ear for hearing
God’s love for Caring.
So, keep the love, keep friendship, Keep Faith in God’s Caring.
Keep the Faith!
JOYS OF FRIENDSHIP
The abundant joys of friendship is enriched with its purity, simplicity, sincerity and trust. It is the intensity of the love that leaves behind trails of sweet memories to cherish the core of life giving a whole new meaning to it. The enigma of friendship strengthens with the bonds of relationships so unique which is unselfish, intimate, pure and beautiful. A bond, unburdened by the constraints of age, sex, religion, social status and other such artificial values that encompass all relations of mankind. Friendship means a firm and gentle relation. It has a responsibility of sharing and caring. It is priceless, incomparable and has an afterglow that shines life like happy sunshine. Friendship means you can confide, share secrets, have oneness and above all, equal wave lengths to match your interests and similar outlook. It has the power of appreciation whatever is noble and loving. A real friend walks in with you when all the rest fall apart in time of need. A true friend believes in your dreams and wishes the best of everything. Friendship is like a vase, once broken cannot be mended. Each person needs for a longing to talk and with the changing time, making friends has a whole new meaning. Cyber friends share their wisdom, share thoughts, show concerns or just be friends who meet and someday part away with nicknames and are lost in netizen world! This is illusion, a lonesome feeling to talk to someone you don’t know but then, friends who are true with a true new meaning to spread happiness are the ones who instill faith and pleasure to add to joys of living.
SEND A MESSAGE, EXPRESS FEELINGS, EXPOSE THOUGHTS, SHOW YOU CARE!!
Sometimes, just a quote, a word, a smile, a glance, an inspiration, encouragement, a note, expressing your Concerns, makes a Great Difference. Send in your Friendship Quotes, send to your friends, acquaintances, anyone….To Kidsfreesouls:-) freesoul@kidsfreesouls.com !
A friend is a hand when you need it,
A smile when you’re sad,
A lift when you’re weary,
A song when you’re glad
A help when you falter,
A word when you’re blue,
A hope for the dreams that are
Special to you.
Attitude is all that determines Altitude!

Kayla’s Holiday Surprise
Kayla’s Holiday Surprise
By
Artie Knapp
After the final bell rang the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday.
“Enjoy your extra day off,” said the teacher to her class.
As the students reached for their backpacks a young girl asked her friend,
“What is Labor Day again?”
“I’m not sure,” said the young boy. “I just know we get an extra day off from school.”
An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. In fact, recess was Kayla’s favorite part of the school day. After the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the arms of her mom.
“How was school, Kayla?” asked her mom.
“It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday.”
“You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?” asked Kayla’s mom with a laugh.
Kayla smiled at her mom. She picked up a basketball that lay on the edge of the driveway. She dribbled it a couple of times and then swish! A perfect shot!
“Great shot, Kayla!” said her dad.
“Thanks, Dad” said Kayla. “Hopefully my friends can come over and play basketball this weekend!”
“I’ll call their parents and see, Kayla” said her mom. “Your homework needs to come first, though.”
Kayla said that she wasn’t assigned any homework for the holiday weekend. So, she was going to have as much fun as possible.
Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and played basketball for several hours.
Then it was Labor Day, you know, that extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn’t believe it. This was a holiday. A day where she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree-house.
As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
“Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on,” said Kayla’s mom.
Okay, it was not a bad dream after all. For Kayla, it was a nightmare.
Kayla stumbled into the kitchen, still sleepy from being waken up so early. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla calmly asked her parents: “Are you serious about working today? Isn’t Labor Day a holiday?”
“Yes, Kayla. It is,” replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day is observed in the first place.”
Kayla’s mom went on to explain that Labor Day is a holiday to honor the hard work that people do throughout the year.
At first, Kayla felt disappointed about having several chores to do. First up, was helping to dry and put away the breakfast dishes. After that, Kayla helped give her puppy a bath. She scrubbed and scrubbed. It was hard work. But it was also a lot of fun. Kayla was covered in just as many soap suds as her puppy. Then it was on to yard work where Kayla helped to pick up sticks. She pretended that the smallest ones were basketballs, as she shot them into a large trash-can.
Kayla felt proud at how much better the yard looked. Her puppy enjoyed it too, as he ran around chasing a stick she threw him. When she was done with her chores, Kayla enjoyed relaxing in her tree-house. The lemonade tasted wonderful after a hard day of work.
The next day Kayla’s teacher asked her students what they did on their extra day off. Twin brothers Matt and Mark shared that they went boating with their family. A young girl, Cassie, said that her family had a picnic at the lake. When Kayla talked excitedly about her day her classmates were surprised. Not because of all the work she had to do, but because of how much fun she had doing it.

Frani and the Little Red Fox
Frani and the Little Red Fox

Three hippopotamuses were snuggled close together. And they were frightened. A lion sitting close by was, too. Everything was shaking all around them.
“Oh no, here it comes!” said one of the hippos.
An animal with very large teeth soared down from the sky! It went for the lion, but missed! This was not the first time the animal had made such a visit. In fact, it often came and went without warning.
“We have got to get out of here,” said another hippo.
“Yeah, and go where?” asked the lion. “No matter where we go that thing follows us.”
Then suddenly strange noises could be heard close by! They all feared the worst. But this time, it was simply much friendlier animals that were heading their way. The hippos and lion had never seen them before. The group included several giraffes and one little red fox.
Like the giraffes, the little red fox felt nervous to be so close to a lion and hippos. But he was a friendly little fox and introduced himself. He soon realized however, that his new friends were more nervous than he was. The hippos and lion were still talking about the animal with large teeth that came down from the sky. And they were surprised to hear that the giraffes and little red fox had never seen it.
“Ladies and gentlemen, not to fear,” said the little red fox. “What needs to happen here is quite clear.”
“And what is that?” demanded the lion.
“We need to stick together,” said the little red fox.
The little red fox said that by sticking together they could perhaps reason with the animal with large teeth.
“A little courage goes a long way,” said the little red fox.
And then everything all around started to shake.
“Oh my, run for it!” said the little red fox.
The little red fox ran as fast as he could. He jumped on one of the giraffe’s back as it stood up to run. Then he climbed up its long neck to hide. The little red fox was so scared that he forgot what the hippos had told him and the giraffes: the animal with large teeth always came down from the sky.
Meanwhile, a grandfather was standing next to his granddaughter as she dropped two coins into a machine.
“You’ll do it this time, Frani,” said her grandfather. “Just take your time.”
Frani carefully moved the joystick straight ahead. Then she tapped it twice towards the left. Below were three hippopotamuses and one lion. And sitting right behind them were several giraffes. Those would all make fine new friends for Frani, but it was a little red fox that she longed to take home. Frani moved the claw down towards the little red fox. And then, she grabbed him!
As she took the little red fox out of the machine, Frani gave him a big hug. Frani’s grandfather celebrated by taking her and the little red fox out for ice-cream.

Protect your Kids Online : Keep them safe
Protect Your Kids Online, or You’ll Lose Them Forever
The internet can be a fantastic resource for children of all ages. The problem is they are continually faced with threats while online, all of which are unseen for the most part.
Protecting them while they are online can be confusing for any concerned parent if they are unsure of what steps to take. This protection doesn’t have to be difficult if the right steps are taken.
Here are tips on how to go about protecting your child while they are online.
Monitoring Online Activity
This doesn’t prevent anything, it highlights your child’s activity. Some of the larger software companies who provide these monitoring packages can check what is happening inside social media applications where many forms of threat face your children.
NetNanny which is one of the most popular can be set to send alerts should anything dubious be attempted to be accessed. It can also highlight if any online friends seem suspicious or they are a victim of cyberbullying.
The major downside is your child might feel you are watching over them a little too much, though that might only be the case in older children.
Parental Controls
This is one of the first areas where parents are able to restrict what their child can see and what they are able to access. Unwanted software installations can be prevented which might contain malware and which a child might be unaware of.
Through a safe search in search engines, or inside browsers age-related content or inappropriate sites can be blocked, or access minimized.
If any parent is unsure how to enable this in the numerous areas where it is possible dedicated software packages are available which can do this from one central point.
If a child is using a computer, a separate account can be created for only their use. Here all the controls can be set and as an aside, it can go a long way to protecting the rest of the system should any others use it.
This method also has the same downside as monitoring online activity as your child might feel restricted in what you are allowing them to do while online.
A Secure Connection
One of the best ways to help protect your child while they are online is by securing the connection of their device. This might appear to nothing more than making the connection more private, but it stops a lot more than parents might realize.
The best VPN’s (Virtual Private Network) can work from your home and protect all devices if it is installed on your home router. A good VPN service provider will also give the option of protecting mobile devices.
When your child is away from home, and they make use of public hotspots or Wi-Fi zones they are susceptible to threats from malware attacks and most importantly online predators.
Should these be in the vicinity of your child, they are more than capable of finding their location.
A VPN service would mask your child’s location, so any predator would be unaware of where your child is situated.
These VPN’s also prevent any data tracking of your child’s device so any intruder would be unable to associate your child with the information they find.
Secure Browsers
Many newer browsers are taking security more seriously than ever. Many contain safe search (mentioned earlier), and also they can delete cookies or user history once a browsing session has ended.
This helps to prevent anyone who might access a device or computer from gaining any access to the stored online activity.
Educating Your Child
For some parents, this can be somewhat challenging as their children are more tech-savvy than they are. What it does though is it highlights the threats your child faces.
When children are old enough to understand the technology, they are old enough to understand the dangers they face.
From downloading software which could contain this malware which might contain spyware that gathers information and sends it back to hackers where they use it to log into personal accounts.
There is also education in the number of hours they spend online at night. Maybe they sit in their room chatting on social media adding anyone who wishes to connect.
From here it can be a simple fact this person wishes to meet. One of the best things you can tell a child for their protection is to never agree to meet a person face to face they do not know already. It is common for predators to create false accounts to befriend children.

My Poems
The Sun and Sunrise at Fatehgarh Palace, Udaipur has been so beautiful. I wrote many poems there….featured are two from my collection.
The Sun
By Ilaxi Patel
Flares so bold, a pretty gold,
Far in Horizons, stories untold
She brings in rays of hope,
A future to mould.
Morning glory so light,
Ours is a struggle n strife,
Scattering sunshine
Fategarh, we leave footprints behind,
All on sands of time
Limericks & Poetry Month
April has been a Poetry Month. As we have Poem in a Bag and Poetry Learning at Swagat Children Library, here’s Poetry Pages for Teachers (Poetry in classrooms)and in Poetry Corner.
As you go for Poetry Learning, the form of Poetry you will love is Limericks and esp. Edward Lear who was born in May. Here’s a brief Profile of the Author and Limericks.
Edward Lear, an English writer and artist, became famous for his humorous poems for children. Born in London on May 12 1812, Lear’s first book of poems, “A Book of Nonsense” (1846) ranks as a masterpiece of children’s literature. His best known “The owl and the Pussy-cat” became a classic too.
That old man of Melrose
Who walked on tip of his toes
But they said it ain’t pleasant
To see u at present
You stupid old man of Melrose
Well, Limericks is a form of humorous verse. It takes it’s name from the city of Limerick, Ireland. No one knows how or where the form originated. It became known after Edward Lear made the form popular with his first “A Book of Nonsense (1846). The Limerick is a poem of five lines, with strong beat and rough anapaestic rhythm (i.e. de-de-DUMM). It is written in Poulter’s measure, a Folk Metre that consists of 13 beats. The first two lines rhyme with the fifth, the third line rhymes with the fourth.
Parents often come to me and request that their kids learn to write poetry – Just because their poetry need to be selected and they have to recite at a Recitation competition or get it printed in the school magazine.
Learning to write poetry in two to four sessions is not a miracle. Kidsfreesouls suggest Poetry Soup Ideas and here’s some simple steps:
1. Build Vocabulary – two-three-four-five-six letter words – Be familiar with words and just words
2. Rhyme words – Find all rhyming words and make a list
3. Select topics from Poetry Soup – Write on school, hobby, animals, etc.
4. Say some Tongue Twisters – To get familiar with rhyming words with pleasure when you say “Betty bought some butter, but the butter was bitter, so betty bought some better butter, to make the bitter butter, better.”
5. Let imagination swirl – Write down all your great ideas.
Now, when I talk of Rhymes, words rhyming together give a musical chime of sound and this is the reason why rhyme is so much used. I am fond of rhyming words and I think, Internal rhymes also add music. For eg.
“The Ice was here and the Ice was there,
The Ice was all around;
It cracked and growled, and roared and howled,
Like noises in a sound!”
Vowel and Consonant sound words like long open vowels and soft consonants like l, m, n, v, w, z, etc produce sweet, soft, soothing music. Alliteration is yet another way to add zing to poetry. Repetition of words and phrases in poetry not only emphasize the meaning but often give musical effect to the poem.
For eg. “In ever climbing up a climbing wave” (Tennyson) or “The western tide crept up along the sand, And o’er and o’er the sand, And round and round the sand” (Kingsley)
Another thing I observed while writing Poetry. Poets have three ways of making us see mental pictures as we let our Imagination soar higher to pen down:
1. By Description : Describing a scene, character, real or ideal, in words. Eg. Henry Longfellow’s ‘Rain in Summer’ (Search in Google Here)
2. By Figures of Speech : Such as simple, metaphor and personification. Compare one thing with another.
3. By Picturesque way : A poet can call up for a picturesque image with descriptive words like, eg. “All in a hot and copper sky, The bloody sun, at noon” (Coleridge)
Imagination and Emotions – two things to blend for an appeal. And which other poetry can go best than ‘Daffodils’ by William Wordsworth (Search in Google Here) – It touches the heart as we recite to end up,
“…They flash upon that inward eye, Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.”

Poetry Soup
WRITE A POEM! SPIN A STORY!
Calling all budding poets and blossoming authors and writers to squeal and squabble the hidden imagination in your brainy heads. Live the fantasy and don’t just let your imagination run dry! It’s time to make a great Poem or weave a story – Be original, Be imaginative, Be realistic or just fantasy. Make it adventurous or a thriller, humorous or fabulous, thought provoking or concerned, a travel or animal related, school story or a mystery. And lo, KidsFreesouls is here to help you shrug off the blues. Just hook to our ideas and ‘Get-set-right’ to trail to hold the reigns of Rudolf’s sleigh this Christmas time. Write your right way out & Enjoy! It’s Only Words…..
HOW TO WRITE A POEM
You may write on one or more of the following animals in your work…..dolphin, whale, horse, panda, tiger, elephant, giraffe, cat, dinosaur, tiny creature, a species of your own creation
Perhaps base your writing around a computer, a robot, or an ancient civilisation (you could even make one up),
Imagine yourself an Alien
Maybe you’d like to feature your favourite musical instrument.
Make up your own Myth or Legend . You might conclude with a moral.
Make your story Science Fiction or a Mystery
You may write on your favourite movie star or a song or from names of movies
Maybe write on education, corruption, environment, etc or addressing to any person
You may express your feelings for a friend, parent, teacher, for anybody you love too.
STIR THE POETRY SOUP
Once you decide to write a poetry, think, think and think! We add some ideas to your Soup Pot. Stir and get ready to gulp down in your brainy heads.
Use rhymed words – they sound like tinkling bells
Find and make a list of words from the Dictionary. Use these words and form the verse
Select a word like ‘cosmopolitan’ Make as many words from it and than use these words
Remember all Opposites. Use them in your Poetry themes
Use Comparisons like soft as breeze, cold as ice…
Use single letter of alphabet. Each lines begins continuing the alphabet word like a, b, c, d….
Use words with alphabets in continuations like a, b, c, d….
Use Positive and than Negative words with imaginary thoughts
INGREDIENTS TO MAKE A POEM
Write a poem in which every line contains a color. There are several ways to do this. A poem might be about Things That Are Red, where every line lists something red. Pick a favorite color and simply make a list of words that color makes you think. Or a poem could be about the color itself. Think about the color in new ways. What does red taste like? What kind of music is red? If red was a famous person, who would red be? If you touch red, what does it feel like? What kind of animal would eat red? Who or what loves red the most? What’s the first thing red does when it gets up in the morning? What part of the school is red?
Write a poem in which every line is a thank you to someone or something. Thank father, dog, cricket bat, pencil, the sky, the person who invented ice cream. thanking teacher to solve maths problem, mom to cook favourite dish, god, etc
Word or phrase to include in every line. Some words and phrases that can work well are: “I remember,” “at midnight,” “secret,” “thunder,” “listen,” “never,” “laugh,” “tomorrow.”
A poem in which each line describes a day where everything happens backwards. A poem in which each line describes something that’s impossible to do or something scary or something that tastes terrible or something that tickles
“Seek and Find.” Look in articles, poems, comics, etc. for words or phrases you like and use those in own poems. In a list poem, each line could contain one of those “found” words or phrases.

Sleep: Vital for Your Child’s Learning and Health

Sleep: Vital for Your Child’s Learning and Health
Every parent, at one point or another, has experienced a grumpy, uncooperative child who hasn’t gotten a good night’s sleep. Changes in mood and behavior are the most noticeable symptoms of sleep deprivation, but rest also plays a vital role in your child’s learning ability and overall health.
We’ve long known that sleep affects the brain. It’s during sleep that the brain performs pruning and strengthening of pathways in the brain. Frequently used brain connections are strengthened while those that aren’t used are pruned to keep messages moving as quickly as possible. During sleep deprivation, neurons in the brain slow down, resulting in delayed reasoning abilities, decision-making skills, and reaction times. That alone will affect a child’s ability to pay attention and retain information in a school setting, but sleep deprivation hurts memory too.
Without adequate rest, children, who are far more busy learning and making new connections than adults, suffer because their brain doesn’t have time to prune and strengthen as it needs to. Consequently, school-age children who don’t get enough sleep have trouble with complex tasks, test performance, and behavior.
Beyond learning and academic performance, overall health takes a hit too. The brain alters the release of the appetite-controlling hormones ghrelin and leptin, releasing them in differing amounts so that children and adults alike experience more hunger and delayed satiety response when tired. Overeating and unwanted weight gain are typical for the chronically sleep deprived, which can lead to obesity, diabetes, and blood pressure problems.
The amount of sleep your child needs depends on his age. If you’re unsure of how much sleep your child needs the Center for Disease Control recommends:
Ages 3-5: 10-13 hours
Ages 6-12: 9-12 hours
Ages 13-18: 8-10 hours
You can help your child get better sleep for improved health, learning, and happiness by helping him develop healthy sleep habits. It starts by making sure his bedroom is set up for optimal sleep conditions. Check his mattress to make sure there are no lumps or saggy spots. Consider a memory foam mattress or topper as a soft option or latex as a firmer option. Keep the bedroom quiet and cool at night with the temperature between 60-68 degrees.
Try to keep the bedroom dark. Light affects the release of melatonin. Your child’s body relies on exposure to sunlight to set a regular sleep-wake cycle. Make sure your child’s room is completely dark at night to support a healthy cycle. That may mean blackout curtains and dim light bulbs in overhead lights.
You can also support better sleep by:
Turning Off Screens Early: Bright blue light from televisions or smartphones suppresses the release of melatonin. Try to shut off screens at least an hour before bed.
Establishing a Bedtime Routine: The body loves routines as they can help signal the brain when to start the release of sleep hormones. A good bedtime routine should help your child relax and calm down for the evening. A warm bath, book, or quiet music can all be part of a healthy bedtime routine.
Keeping a Consistent Bedtime: Like a routine, a consistent bedtime helps the brain know when to start the sleep cycle. It also makes sure that your child has the best opportunity to get the right amount of sleep. Keeping the same bedtime is just as important on weekends as it is on weekdays so try to keep their schedule consistent.
