Revealing Leadership Conversational Intelligence Supremely

Supreme Leadership by Alinka Rutkowska
Book Review by Ilaxi Patel

Are you an Aspiring Leader or Business Person who is fascinated by Leadership? Maybe, you are a Leader who need to hone leadership skills ! Look no further. Supreme Leadership brings leading minds and landmark ideas in an easily accessible conversational format to gain wisdom from 34 CEOs who are celebrating their 25th Anniverary in 2018.

The Author helps fuel the fire of innovative thoughts through the interaction and experiences of Leaders to gain 850 years of wisdom from their success stories. It gives a big-picture strategic thinking, tactical problem solving, advice in managing at Corporate level or for developing personal careers – from the scratch to be successful Leader. Being a Leader isn’t enought as it needs to being an ‘Effective Leader.’ The practical examples are a storehouse of information revealed by the Leaders as Alinka Rutkowska pens down the new, fresh and stories that are supreme. What common observation is that these genius minds possess is ‘Passion’ and ‘Grit’ apart from Vision and capability to overcome obstacles and challenges. Though we do not recognize the names of CEOs interviewed in this Book, nevertheless it an influence of their ability, models of leadership, leadership assessment, ethical leadership, Innovation and Ideas, tact and wisdom to lead and face challenges that brings readers closer to them. And, Alinka Rutkowska has rightly justified her writing skills as she share their voices – loud and deep.

All 34 CEOs are featured in six chapters as :

PART 1: PASSION

PART 2: VISION

PART 3: PERSISTENCE

PART 4: ADAPTABILITY

PART 5: CUSTOMER CENTEREDNESS

PART 6: RELATIONSHIPS

A mention of Steve Jobs catch your attention as the Author Alinka Rutkowska writes on Steve Jobs’s persistence that exist on the leaders she interviewed. It turns out – a great deal, she says to the Steve Job’s quote: “I think it’s just like an on-off switch. Click and you’re gone. And that’s why I don’t like putting on-off switches on Apple devices.”

The Author in her interviews has even had two very important questions to the CEOs – one is on Law of Leadership and the other on Books the CEOs have read. This indeed is thoughtful read and reveals knowledge and moral values for business.

Way back in 2010, the Author published her first Book and now, the multi award winner and #1 International Bestseller brings yet another Book to transform minds and make waves to enhance Leadership in a supreme way. Alinka Rutkowska has created and hosted 5 Figure Author Challenge offering winning strategies and she’s been featured on Fox Business Network, affiliates of ABC, NBC and CBS, Author Marketing Club, The Author

Hangout, Kindlepreneur, Book Marketing Mentors, Examiner,She Knows, She Writes, The Writer’s Life and many more. Also, a sought-after speaker and has spoken at numerous conferences and on podcasts.

A powerful Practical guide to Positivity – Goals and learning from mistakes too. The Book is apt to gain reputation as the springboard of thought for both established and emerging business leaders. A Must Read.

Some quoted anecdotes from the Book that I randomly refer and like are :

” Humility is a wonderful thing and if you can keep yourself humble, success comes with hard work, good attitude and clever thinking. – Wayne Reuvers, LiveTechnology

” Another theory I gained from my business reading is that company values are more important than a business plan. We have very strong values at enChoice that we strive to stick to. One last value I’d like to

mention is to strive for continuous improvement. In this world today, you have to be willing to be constantly changing. That’s a value that we have: never stay the same. Keep changing.” – Tony White, enchoice

” The key factor (attribute to success) I think would be grit, a belief that we’d eventually succeed, and the willingness to endure any amount of pain or setbacks.” – Bob Ferris, VirTra

” I always say that you have to lead by example. Stay humble, and never expect anybody to do anything that you wouldn’t be willing to do yourself. You have to trust your people. You hire the right people, and you allow them to help

make the company better. Collaborate with them. Never feel like you’re above anybody else.” – Rupesh Patel, Zenique Hotelson on Law of Leadership ”

“ Make sure you pick something that you can be passionate about and that you love to do. That’s the No.1 thing. If you’re passionate about what you do, you’ll be 100 percent successful. Even when you’re passionate and things get hard,

it’s frustrating. It can drive you crazy, but at the end of the day you like doing it. If you’re not passionate about it and all those same things happen in that job anyway, then you don’t want to do it. Otherwise, you’ll always come back swinging like in a boxing match.” – Jeremy Enck, Fortus Groups

Manners, And they do matter !

Manners, And they do matter !

Well, Manners do matter. It has it’s own importance and cannot be learnt in a day! Some children are a joy around. They are pleasant, polite and treat others with respect. Whereas, some are rude, naughty and noisy. They are defiant, give back answers or blur out words they shouldn’t.

Are you bugged with such child who needs to learn good manners?

Parents are the role models and so are the teachers too. Parents often complain that coping with undisciplined child is the most turbulent phase of parenthood. Even teachers call for the parents and complain the child’s behavior when they fail to handle a manner-less child. Great kids misbehave too! Children are always in transition. Moving from one development stage to another and it is amidst the process, Parents need to instill moral values in kids. Manners are skills taught to develop social grace. They display respect, care and consideration. Imagine, a child comes and bangs saying, ‘Mommy, I will not share my chocolate with my brother’ or blue out in from of a guest saying, ‘Mommy, I will not allow you to give my biscuits to the aunty’.

In fact, I really came across a child who was rude and rough. The mother got a complain from school and the teacher told her not to send the child if he misbehaves. On hearing this, the child said, ‘No problem. Good for me. I won’t go to school and watch TV at home all the time.’ So, this is really embarassing, isn’t it? Here’s where we need to draw the lines.

Good manners at home and away from home, makes life pleasant. Knowing how to be polite will give the child the self confidence, build his self esteem as others will respond positively to his good manners. So, what can you do and set initial steps? May be this can help:

1. Talk about Manners and teach social skills. The simple, ‘Please’, ‘Thank You’, ‘Sorry’, are the easy words but to be used often.

2. Set a good example. Children act the way you do. If you tell him to do something and you don’t, he too will follow the footsteps.

3. Children don’t learn by just playing, seeing or listening. Give them the chance many times over and again to practice social skills.

4. Role play the situations. Let the child be the host and get ready for guests.

5. Teach the proper table manners, Phone manners and even appreciating, caring, sharing and check on proper moral attitudes.

Well, more on this and you can find on the wiki here on a guide to ‘How to have Good Manners’. You may find more websites on Manners through

Btw, I have routinely held sessions at Swagat on ‘Manners’ especially on Table Manners and simple outline of social skills and moral values. Here is a worksheet on Don’t of Table Manners, supported to this session. I am sure, may parents and teachers will find this helpful to have a supportive class circulation copy while you teach Manners in your classroom/or even hang on clip board in your child’s study room/bedroom. Enjoy!

Fun Games by Hasbro’s Noodleboro

Manners, And they do matter !

Sharing, Listening and manners don’t come to naturally to kids… but playing does! – reads the lines on the Hasbro’s Noodleboro site as they promote three new games to teach Manners and social skills to children, aged 4 up for 2/3 players. They’re Fun Park Game, Picnic Basket Game and Pizza Palace Game.

Fun Park Game: Developing social skills. The story is about a place filled with midway games and carnival fun. In this game, kids play together to collect as many sharing stars as they can before the park closes. It’s all about having fun and helping friends by sharing.

Picnic Basket Game: Value of Manners. It’s hard to have a perfect picnic party when ants keep trying to steal food! Just say “please” and “thank you” to send those pesky ants packing and collect all the items that will make the picnic a success. Rachel refuses to use good manners and see what happens!

Pizza Palace Game: Learning to Listening skills. In this game, it’s important for kids to listen and pay attention to orders before heading into the kitchen. Things may go wrong if they don’t listen properly.

The games are the result of more than a year of development work, which included an online survey of moms (and a few dads) around the U.S., according to an executive with Hasbro’s games division. Teaching social skills turned out to have surprising importance for the nearly 1,000 people surveyed.

You can find more on Kids page here to check on the game demos on the site.

Unleash Creativity

Unleash Creativity

Dr. Radhakrishnan said once “A good teacher must know how to arouse the interest of the pupil in the field of study for which he is responsible. He must himself be a master in the field of study and be in touch with the latest developments in the subject, he must himself be a fellow traveler in the exciting pursuit of knowledge” The teacher affects eternity. One can never tell where his influence stops. There should be creativity, a ‘Free Progress’ – each child developing and flowering in an absolutely spontaneous, inwardly centered and self directed process. A school makes a break through if it creates a learning environment but it is a parent to make an active choice for kids and to nurture their talents. It is in their hands to recognize their potentialities and offer them an Alternative Education, a commitment, hard work, responsibility, learning the basic skills of reading and writing at own pace with creativity and open minds in open surroundings in tune to environment, blooming naturally!

Unleash Your Creativity : Know your Potentialities

Jumpstart your mind to unleash the Creativity powers, mental capabilities that you can exercise it, strengthen it and visualize its capacity to work wonders. It’s the potentialities within your own self that keeps the tough get going in the rough times too! It is a myth that creativity is rare and mysterious, an inborn talent and only artists can be creative. However, Creativity is within everyone’s reach with no exceptions. To unleash the powers of your potentialities, it’s the strategies that need to be mastered and shoot up the Idea Bank storing all the ideas that pop up in mind. New ideas fleet,  flashing through consciousness. It’s the time to grab the opportunities and swing into action with the idea bank flow. Exploring the creative skills have learning ways too and imparts skill to others too. Capturing the thoughts into the mind frame and getting inspired even from the slightest flutter of the bird’s wings or listening to the rustling of the leaves. Challenge is the second step that accelerates the flow of new ideas and giving it a shape. Failures are wellsprings of creativity or rather; disappointment leads to creativity with born ideas in mind. Challenge is accepting with grace and surging ahead to heights Efforts give it a push and creativity flowers, an extension to what you already know. Try to reach the moon and you will land up picking up some stars! The saying seems mysterious because nor can you reach the moon nor you can pick up the stars but while imagining to do so, one can pop with new ideas trying to find the solutions and these ideas work to unleash the powers of creativity! This will broaden your thoughts and diversify into other fields. A person might have creativity in one field but indulging deep, one can change to tracks to enhance own creativity, learning about the subjects you know nothing about and even you don’t want to know. The more knowledge you have, the more diverse that knowledge is, the greater your potentials for creative outputs. And Surroundings do make a big difference. Brainstorming to expose your ideas and exert team participant’s creativity. Creativity is individual – even one has own potentialities. Make the timework for you. Worry is a wrong word to let it in which can cripple your creativity. Just let the ideas flow in natural course and let this be a ready reckoned with no mental strain or force whatsoever. Remember, every innovation came about because a determined person stubbornly believed in the inner abilities of his or her imagination. This will have wings to soar high if you have a belief in your own self and the things that you can do. Sometimes, wasted moments in life can turn to Creative explosions with just ‘ideas’ and make those moments turn to productive ones. Only judging what creativity suits best is worth consideration or else someday you land up being ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ applying all those ideas but than, this is like grabbing the stars while attempting to reach the moon, after all.

Checklist for Creativity

Creative people generally show a spirit of Intellectual entertainment. Listening to music, drinking coffee, watching television, Painting, Dancing, Surfing or chatting can also plunge into creative ideas and come up with numerous practical devices for stimulating and capturing new ideas. Check list a bunch of verbs like magnify, substitute, combine, expose, reverse, soar and so on. Apply these verbs at the time of difficulties faced as you splash the creative outputs.

Make efforts to document your ideas. Jot down the ideas or in the shuffle of day-to-day activities, you lose track of them. Be prepared to note down, keeping handy a piece of paper, pencil or open up a folder in you computer and feed in the ideas.
Day dream your ideas. It has tremendous powers to make dreams turn true or at least, grab those moments of joy to fulfill the creative pursuits.
Ponder over the creative skills. Get inspired from people, places, things or happenings – just about anything and the inspirations work wonders, flowering to bloom fragrance of your creativity spreading happiness within and around you.

Spoonfeed Creativity : Raise IQ

The contentment package of fun and games is very limited for children today as we pace towards new era of change. Pool games, Go carting, Para gliding & sailing, Bowling are some of the most sort for games. Rest of the activities is Computers, Badminton, swimming, painting or dancing. Reading is almost on the back seat, which is the most neglected part. Gone are the days of playing marbles, hopscotch, skipping, carom, top and strings and story reading! Children are fascinated with thrills and adventure. The whole new lot demands for more challenging and exciting activities. A recent case study shows that it is important to stimulate children’s’ intellects. Parents sort various methods to spoon-feed creativity into the minds of kids. Some confusedly land up adopting the activities that the child is not interested. Even playing a simple game like hide and seek or ‘ahmedabad bazi’ or just a game of business or Chinese Chequers or Carrom and Chess, helps construct the complex brain circuit essential to intellectual development. It is said that during pre school years, the children have great opportunity for understanding language and learning to talk. Creativity takes shape as they grow up adapt to various activities to nurture their talents. Reeya’s Mom says ‘Gone are the days when we use to play games. These children love to play but their preferences and priorities have changed. They are burdened with schoolwork. Reading is totally out.’ True, Cartoons are in. Pokeman and Harry Potter is the current trends whereas diving into dreamy imagination with story books is out! The normal set of instructions is not required to build the IQ of children but what’s necessary is creating a stimulating atmosphere for casual learning started early in the childhood days. Being aware and talking to the kid encourages him to listen to you and the little information’s that you provide, the little stimulating talks will build his intellects. Language is important to successful intellectual functioning and the grasp of language goes beyond just saying words. The vocabulary size increases. Music is also a very exciting activity, which teaches kids more than rhythm and melody. A child who would not like to read, happy reads the words displayed while singing along with a computer CD! Singing develops brain development and clean, good songs have an effect on the child. Assembling puzzles makes them accurate and faster. Labeling things such as using toys to help the child to know colors, etc is a simple activity arising curiosity.

Raising IQ and exploring creativity explosions is galore and the brain management needs to activate the cells in the right direction but its confusing for a parent or a teacher as to which activity to choose! Nevertheless, Reading, playing and music are the best activities one can pursue to activate those brain cells, after all!

‘How much do children know about Politics?

'How much do children know about Politics?

‘How much do children know about Politics? Guide with Kidsfreesouls steps

As India looks forward for New India –  Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat with Narendra Modi now as PM, I wonder – Aren’t our kids smart enough to say, “Always Baar Baar Modi Sarkar” or with the new “Yeh Dil Maange More” Ab toa Modi hi PM ! BJP ka Rule !

In US, Barrack Hussein Obama is the first African-American President who made a History when he won the 44th US Presidential Election. With the Post Elections then with Obama winning, there were Seven Big Questions, “How will Obama Govern?” (http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/the-seven-big-post-election-questions/) Change Can Happen with Challenges he faced and emerge a winner ever.

Now, it is to be seen whether CM of Gujarat, Narendra Modi as PM, how effectively and efficiently, the things will be handled.

Btw, reading on the Slate is an interesting story by Emily Bazelon http://www.slate.com/id/2203667/ on Halloween experiment on Voting preferences of 551 kids. Yale economist Dean Karlan had a way to set up a big McCain sign and a life-size cutout of the candidate on one side of his porch, and a big Obama sign and the corresponding cutout on the other. A squad of graduate students sat behind two tables, recording the kids’ ages, genders, and responses. 78% of Kids chose Obama. What is more interesting is that Karlan and his minions asked a group of children a different question, “You can get two pieces of candy from the Obama table or four pieces of candy from the McCain table. Which do you prefer?” A boy picked up his choice for more candies! Read more on this on Slate here. http://www.slate.com/id/2203667/

Now, what I feel is ‘How much do children know about Politics? How do parents or teachers make children aware of the candidates and who is a right choice? Well, in our town, ask a child and he’s blank on such Political scenario. Ask to vote, and the choice comes – who is the least corrupt of the Candidates and you can cast your vote to him! Most of the children find it too tough to understand Civics which is almost a fast read-learn lesson in the classroom.

Political preference is one domain where parents views do matter. They influence kids which have a lasting effect as they grow up. If you call a Politician corrupt in front of a child, he is going to carry the impression and fail to offer his choice. Childhood innocence do not last long as children grow to learn values and make their own choice and decisions. However, here are simple steps to guide Children and make them know on politics and elections:

1. Keep them simply informed by simply talking to them on the current political scenario.

2. Do not criticize or make weird comments showing your mind. Instead, discuss the candidates, parties and what the present country needs.

3. Seek to proper television channels or websites to find sources as you may not be well aware of what to kid appropriate source. Surf with keywords ‘teaching children about politics’ in Kidsfreesouls Search here.

4. Watch Television together. Make it interactive and inform of current affairs and global issues. Ask or reply to questions in a simple manner.

5. Read newspapers and magazines. Let kids explore interesting cartoons on politics and explain them. Make the child know about the news piece and help him read political news.

6. Discuss. A major influence is a parent who interacts with the kid on politics. Talk about Administration that begins with home leading to countries. How do leaders manage and what it means for the nation.

7. Talk to Teachers and find what they are discussing about Politics in the class. Encourage making Posters and encourage, polite, open and honest debate.

8. Support content. Provide news, magazines, websites that teach on politics. Take them to Libraries or Museums. Watch documentaries or read on leaders.

9. Don’t let the child be overwhelmed during Election. Most of the television, newspapers or people speak Politics and talk of parties – Be cautious. Kids can be overwhelmed and anxious to happenings around. Take a break. Switch off the continuous bombarding of politics.

Lastly, teach a child to absorb. All that glitters is not gold. Politicians are human beings and can break promises, say lies too or be corrupt. It is values to imbibe and hope brings in rays of sunshine.

Kids polish their research skills and increase their political knowledge. They will be informed voters in time to come when they grow up and be responsible, powerful leaders in their life – be in profession or politics, why not?

Teach Toddlers to Read

Teach Toddlers to ReadTeach Toddlers to read

Books and they are always the windows through which the soul peeps out. Early Reading is a habit. Toddler definition starts when a child reaches 12 months and grow up to 36 months age. The development schedules begin almost at the age when they start when they go toddling, walking unsteadily and holding for a support to balancing the act. Slowly, there comes in the discipline which can be thought of as the daily training that parents provide by action, word and example to shape the kid’s behavior. Toddlers are observing. The Development schedules are generally seperated into categories as the kids grow up and with many different lables. To briefly sum up, they form :

1. Motor skills.

2. Conversation and communication styles.

3. Social skills

4. Self help skills

5. Cognitive skills

Childhood development schedule serve a parent to identify the need of kids and provide routine and robust monitoring to help them take the tiny steps to climb up, growing gracefully. As a Development Psychologist and working with children at Swagat Children Library over a period of 25 years, I have moms asking me these questions quite often:

When should I teach my Toddler to read?
At what age should I make my child read?
How can I build my child’s vocabulary?
How can I help my kid to read?
How can I improve my child’s reading level?

In fact, my answer is always ‘No’ – only exceptional children can read too quick. However, Children books are visuals and fun that a child can understand. So, the best way to Teach a Toddler to read is Get Books, Read Books. My Grandson Hridaan started love for books way back when he was 15 months and at 4 years, ended up listening lot of stories and narrating too.

Here’s some quick guide to help Toddlers to Read :

1. Show Books when he develops the Motor skills. While at a nap or just before bed-time, show colorful Picture Books – can be the basic Alphabet books, Vocabulary set, animals, shapes, colors and so on. Make this a routine.

2. Let the Books be around in the room, handy to pick up.

3. Add a new Book to the Toy Box and this, sure is noticed.

4. Focus on words and pictures pointing a finger while you show.

5. Expression – exclamations are noticed by the child as you read a story

6. Check the phonic sounds as they are heard and stored in mind.

7. Go for repeat books – be it vocabulary or stories

8. Make it Feel, touch, see – animal stories are best while you show domestic animals as dogs, cats, goat, cows, horses and help the child to know and learn.

9. Use the Arts and Crafts way to teach words – draw, color and stick-paste.

10.Encourage your child to narrate – be it a story you’ve read or anything else they want to speak. Just Listen with interest and motivate.

11. Fill up their small minds with imagination. The sky, earth, moon, stars, butterflies, rainbow, music, farm, animals, toy stories are all they like. Talk, engage and explore.

The most important factor is setting priorities and setting example. If a parent or a teacher is not into the habit of reading, they fail to make it ‘fun reading’ and even make boring sessions for the kids. Children who see the adults

reading follow the footsteps as they are prone to imitate elders. Setting reading priority is even more essential part because reading habits are formed through setting of routine reading sessions. It can be once a week, two hours of

every day, half an hour to two.

Moreover, We need to encourage children to write ‘Weekly review Journal’ of stories they’ve read with a simple jot down in the scrap like: (It can be a daily review too)

Name of the Book
Name of the Characters in the Book
Best Part I like
Hard Words in the Book
My Opinion or Moral of the story
Lastly, Sign of the Student and Teacher’s sign.

Once a week, one review writing and you have 52 reviews ready in a year.

Reading workshop every Saturday is a routine at Swagat Children Library . During this time, 1st Grade onward students are reading self-selected books independently. However, guided, they choose the books from library and it is important

to make sure that the same is “just right” level based selection. While students are reading their books, I am conferring with individual students, conducting guided reading groups or strategy lessons, facilitating project ideas, etc. For this reason, it is important that I have clear routines and procedures in place to keep my independent readers on task and truly engaged in their reading.

Keeping Book logs is encouraged for Grade one onwards where students must record ALL Books they read throughout the year in their Reader’s Log. This reflect on their own reading habits, set monthly reading goals, and also helps to

assess their reading progress.

Creating a Genius and teaching literary skills begin from Home and Home is always where the heart is.

Niceness Mistakes !

Niceness Mistakes !

How oft we create a wave to spell trouble with our own perfections being true and honest with good faith and intentions? We take on too much not saying what we want and that’s exactly what the book reveals – the niceness mistakes that ‘Damage’ us! Our Health is at stake! The Book Too Nice for Your Own Good : How to Stop Making 9 Self-Sabotaging Mistakes (Paperback) by Duke Robinson is a must read for those who do not want to deter their Health and check the soft corners to balance the Emotional turmoil which arise due to their Niceness Mistakes – Being good and not saying what you want which slowly and gradually hurts inside.

Unconsciously, we have planted strong messages in the back of our minds and with good intentions by our mentors, follow the moral code of conducts in life. Be good, be nice, be cool, share and care, don’t be selfish, be reasonable, don’t hurt others, help friends, say yes and so on. In real, trying to reach perfection and taking on too much lead us to exhaustion and sooner or later the ship of our life start sinking. The author gives an insight to the nine unconscious mistakes we often make daily and helps us correct them and pulls a person out of frustration and stress. In not saying what you want and taking on too much, it leads to suppressed anger. Robinson provides healthy tips to express anger to orchestrate a balanced life. Life itself is like riding a bike up and down roads that are bumpy, curvy, hilly while juggling bananas, balloons and bowling balls says Robinson and so this is when you have a fall, life needs balancing back to pedal and steer with too much/too little, too rational/too emotional, to fast/too slow, too cautious/too reckless, too strong/too weak, etc. and remain upright empowering to get what you need and deserve. Irony is, sometimes our niceness betrays us and this book is a key to understanding our mistakes and brings about a ‘change’ in us. Robinson makes us a nicer person making one realize the mistakes, why we make and how to give up. In doing so, Robinson guides in:

1. Liberating from the bondage of other’s expectations

2. Saying no and saving work overloads

3. Telling what we want and analyze what we receive is worth or not

4. Express anger that heal and maintain relationships too.

5. Face irrationality and criticism

6. Tell truth to friends when they fail us

7. Care for others without the burden of trying to run their lives

8. In pain and grief, feel competent enough

A change is always welcome even for the nice to be nicer and avoid the mistakes that we keep making out of the blue. Our good intentions turn out to be damn-in-way for others who often misunderstand or shrug off not appreciating your worth as human being.

This book is indeed a gem collection for every person who has learned to live being ‘Nice’ and remain being so without being emotionally hung up sometimes. Good Pick!

John Milton

John Milton

(Born 9th December 1608-8th November 1674)

‘The mind in its own place and in itself

Can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.- Paradise Lost

‘What if earth Be but the shadow of heaven and things therein,

Each to other like, more than on earth is thought?’ – Paradist Lost

John Milton was an English Poet and a political writer. He was one of the three children, born in this father’s shop in Bread Street in London. His father was an amateur Musician and a Composer. John Milton attended St. Paul’s School and then Christ’s college at Cambridge University. His colleagues nicknamed him ‘Lady of Christ’ for his feminine face and precise conduct. However, Milton was not deterred with any remarks and while at Cambridge wrote poems and prepared himself for a religious career, dedicating himself to God’s service as a poet.

John Milton

In 1632, after graduating, Milton went to his countryplace where he wrote his two major pieces ‘Comus’ and ‘Masque’ which was dramatic presentation with music. Later, Milton supported Puritan cause through a series of political writings and gradually with the sweeping change in political scenario, Milton turned away from poetry for a brief period to work on behalf of Parliament and common wealth through his prose.

Milton married 16 year old Mary Powell in 1643 but their marriage was unhappy. His work and constant study strained his weak eyes and he was completely blind by 1652. About his blindness, he wrote a sonnet ‘How my light is spent’ in 1655. John Milton wrote his masterpieces ‘The Paradise Lost’, ‘Paradise Regained’ and ‘samson Agonistes’ during his final years, composed first two works after he was totally blind. In ‘Paradise Lost’, John Milton justifies the ways of God to man. It retells the story of Bible and creation and the fall of Adam and Eve against the backdrop of Satan’s rebellion against God and expulsion from heaven. Milton studied classical greek and latin authors and was, greatly influenced by them. He died on 8th November 1608 due to gout and was buried with his father in St. Giles, Cripplegate, London.

SONG ON MAY MORNING

Now the bright morning Star, Dayes harbinger,

Comes dancing from the East,

And leads with her The Flowry May,

who from her green lap throws The yellow Cowslip, and the pale Primrose.

Hail bounteous May that dost inspire Mirth and youth,

and warm desire, Woods and

Groves, are of thy dressing, Hill and Dale,

doth boast thy blessing.

Thus we salute thee with our early Song,

And welcom thee, and wish thee long.

ON THE MORNING OF CHRIST’S NATIVITY (Compos’d 1629)

1

THIS is the Month, and this the happy morn Wherin the Son of Heav’ns eternal King, Of wedded Maid, and Virgin Mother born, Our great redemption from above did bring; For so the holy sages once did sing, That he our deadly forfeit should release, And with his Father work us a perpetual peace.

2

That glorious Form, that Light unsufferable, And that far-beaming blaze of Majesty, Wherwith he wont at Heav’ns high Councel-Table, To sit the midst of Trinal Unity, He laid aside; and here with us to be,

Forsook the Courts of everlasting Day, And chose with us a darksom House of mortal Clay.

3

Say Heav’nly Muse, shall not thy sacred vein Afford a present to the Infant God? Hast thou no vers, no hymn, or solemn strein, To welcom him to this his new abode, Now while the Heav’n by the Suns team untrod, Hath took no print of the approching light, And all the spangled host keep watch in squadrons bright?

4

See how from far upon the Eastern rode The Star-led Wisards haste with odours sweet, O run, prevent them with thy humble ode, And lay it lowly at his blessed feet; Have thou the honour first, thy Lord to greet, And joyn thy voice unto the Angel Quire, From out his secret Altar toucht with hallow’d fire.

PARADISE LOST BOOK REVIEW

Paradise Lost is about Adam and Eve – How they were created and how they lost their place in the Garden of Eden, also called Paradise. It’s the same story you find in the first pages of Genesis, expanded by Milton into a very long, detailed, narrative poem. It also includes the story of the origin of Satan. Originally, he was called Lucifer, an angel in heaven who led his followers in a war against God, and was ultimately sent with them to hell. Thirst for revenge led him to cause man’s downfall by turning into a serpent and tempting Eve to eat the forbidden fruit.

The story opens in hell, where Satan and his followers are recovering from defeat in a war they waged against God. They build a palace, called Pandemonium, where they hold council to determine whether or not to return to battle. Instead they decide to explore a new world prophecied to be created, where a safer course of revenge can be planned. Satan undertakes the mission alone. At the gate of hell, he meets his offspring, Sin and Death, who unbar the gates for him. He journeys across chaos till he sees the new universe floating near the larger globe which is heaven. God sees Satan flying towards this world and foretells the fall of man. His Son, who sits at his right hand, offers to sacrifice himself for man’s salvation. Meanwhile, Satan enters the new universe. He flies to the sun, where he tricks an angel, Uriel, into showing him the way to man’s home.

Satan gains entrance into the Garden of Eden, where he finds Adam and Eve and becomes jealous of them. He overhears them speak of God’s commandment that they should not eat the forbidden fruit. Uriel warns Gabriel and his angels, who are guarding the gate of Paradise, of Satan’s presence. Satan is apprehended by them and banished from Eden. God sends Raphael to warn Adam and Eve about Satan. Raphael recounts to them how jealousy against the Son of God led a once favored angel to wage war against God in heaven, and how the Son, Messiah, cast him and his followers into hell. He relates how the world was created so mankind could one day replace the fallen angels in heaven.

Satan returns to earth, and enters a serpent. Finding Eve alone he induces her to eat the fruit of the forbidden tree. Adam, resigned to join in her fate, eats also. Their innocence is lost and they become aware of their nakedness. In shame and despair, they become hostile to each other. The Son of God descends to earth to judge the sinners, mercifully delaying their sentence of death. Sin and Death, sensing Satan’s success, build a highway to earth, their new home. Upon his return to hell, instead of a celebration of victory, Satan and his crew are turned into serpents as punishment. Adam reconciles with Eve. God sends Michael to expel the pair from Paradise, but first to reveal to Adam future events resulting from his sin. Adam is saddened by these visions, but ultimately revived by revelations of the future coming of the Savior of mankind. In sadness, mitigated with hope, Adam and Eve are sent away from the Garden of Paradise.

2 medium Carrots or (1 cup grated Carrot thins)

2 tablespoons Ghee

1½ cups Milk

2 tablespoons Condensed Milk (optional)

5-6 Cashew Nuts, broken into two-three pieces (optional)

8-10 Raisins, (optional)

1 tablespoon Sugar

1/4 teaspoon Cardamom Powder (Elaichi)

Peel and grate carrots or coarsely grind them in food processor.

Heat 2 tablespoons ghee in a non-stick or heavy bottomed pan and shallow fry cashew nuts and raisins separately, transfer them to a plate.

In the same pan, add grated carrot and sauté over low flame for 4-5 minutes while stirring continuously.

Add milk, mix well and bring it to boil over medium flame.

When it starts to boil, add condensed milk and mix well. Cook on low flame for approx 5 minutes, stir in between frequently.

Add sugar according to taste. Please note that condensed milk is already sweet; hence add sugar only to get little higher sweetness. Cook until it starts to thicken or for around 5 minutes, stir continuously to avoid burning of carrot and milk.

Add cardamom powder, mix well and turn off flame. Allow it to cool at room temperature.

Transfer it to serving bowls and garnish with cashew nuts and raisins. Serve carrot kheer warm or chilled according to your choice.

For Variation

If you like very thick consistency, then cook until mixture is thick and almost all liquid is absorbed

Use carrots that are sweet in taste.

2 tablespoons khoya (mawa) to give it a creamy texture

Acts of Kindness in Children

Acts of Kindness in Children

World Kindness Day falls on November 13 and Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week is February 9-15 2005. I think, any date is great to have Kindness Day.

I was wondering, why ‘Random’ but I guess children can well define ‘act’ and ‘kindness’ but ‘random’ is just casual – Children need to know this word ‘random’ and understand the phrase fully.

Kindness in the Classroom (Home) and Good Manners session are very important to build strong pillars of Character. These simple ‘Random’ Acts of Kindness are sometimes overlooked. They can build Confidence and boost the self esteem of kids. Kids’ acts are worthy a praise so much as we take pride when they excel in academics or sports. Developing a culture of Kindness by way of Projects do promote social-moral values that comes with an attitude to be kind. The emotional quotient misses a pitch for being social as early schooling is more focused on just the cognitive skills of reading and writing. Hence, it is important to nurture non-cognitive skills – social, emotional and behavioral competencies that lead to success in later life.

It is pertinent to build a culture for kindness – from the very start when children are climbing their first steps to school. Here are ethical Kidsfreesouls steps in Behavior Development and always wear the Kindness Badge and sing along “When you Give Love, you Receive Love”.

1. Be Kind – As parents-teachers or kids. Just Act, do it. Adults need to inspire and play role their act showing Kindness with their words and act. Identiy ways to be kind and share with children. Children need a healthy dose of the warm-and-fuzzies to thrive as healthy, happy, well-rounded individuals. Interact and engage them while you follow a kind act.

2. Be a good listener – Listen to children and kindly answer their small questions. They turn to listen too. Treat them nice with no spanking or punishment.

3. Catch Kindness – Give stars for being good and no stars for not being kind. Place a chart and have fun together. You can give stars for the kind act to the child and tell him to do the same for you. Reward for kindness when the Kindness Chart reaches set stars. i.e. for 25 kindness acts, give them a reward.

4. Gift Books – Gift books on Kindness and even get books on kindness for yourself. Books like Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a classic that sets good example.

5. Participate in Group Activity – Involve in activities, social causes, group walks or charity – any activity that calls for social cause and being kind and helpful to others. Organize drawing and coloring sessions, music or crafts sessions for the deaf and dumb, blind children or the orphans – this will fill their world with joy. Teach your children – How to Tithe (give) and these tips may help too. Giving is a responsibility and a source of satisfaction. There is always time in life to help others. You can give without loving and you can’t love without giving.

6.Engage them in daily chores – Indulge kids in helping around – at home and school. This will make them more responsible, organized and also feel self worth of job well done. Get them do things they like – planting or watering plants, cutting vegetables, set up menu for lunch or dinner, spread bed sheets, whatever they like to do. Self indulged activities often have a calm effect and peace of mind.

7. Make Friends – Friendship itself has the kindness factor. Showing love, caring for the other and sharing. Get kids to do crafts – make beautiful friendship bands, car hangings, pencil tops or pen stands. Let them gift to their friends. Maybe, paint t-shirts and gift on birthday. Kindness comes in prompt with love and feelings for a friend.

8. Mind Language – A very important factor to remember is ‘words’. What you demonstrate, kids follow. Children pick faster what you say and do.

9. Reduced Depression – yours and for children too

Dr. Wayne Dyer, an internationally-renowned author and speaker, says that an act of kindness triggers an increase in serotonin, a natural chemical responsible for improving mood. This boost in happiness occurs not only in both the giver and receiver of kindness, but also in anyone who witnesses it. This makes kindness a powerful, natural http://www.drmcquaid.com/pdf/Happiness_2.pdf (antidepressant. (PDF, 14KB)

9. I believe : Believe in God and make kids say ‘I believe’ – When you pray to god for help and guidance, children follow your spirituality and can see your day to day relationship with god through prayers. God hears prayers and it’s faith that makes better souls.

Patty O’Grady, PhD, an expert in neuroscience, emotional learning, and positive psychology, specializes in education. She reports:

“Kindness changes the brain by the experience of kindness. Children and adolescents do not learn kindness by only thinking about it and talking about it. Kindness is best learned by feeling it so that they can reproduce it.”

Maurice Elias, Professor at Rutgers University Psychology Department, is also an advocate for kindness. He says:

“As a citizen, grandparent, father, and professional, it is clear to me that the mission of schools must include teaching kindness. Without it, communities, families, schools, and classrooms become places of incivility where lasting learning is unlikely to take place . . . [W]e need to be prepared to teach kindness, because it can be delayed due to maltreatment early in life. It can be smothered under the weight of poverty, and it can be derailed by victimization later in life . . . Kindness can be taught, and it is a defining aspect of civilized human life. It belongs in every home, school, neighborhood, and society.”

As such Emotions are the wild cards in human intelligence They fit into are thinking as emotions create thoughts and thoughts create actions. So, jumpstart to create a Culture of Kindness and let peace be at your doorstep.
