Drinking ? Your Kids are Watching !

Christmas and New Year 2020 world over had Parents celebrating the festive seasons and sure comes in ‘Alcohol’ drinking. A sure fire on How kids model parental behavior and imitate. Here’s news from Reuters that says about a recently conducted survey of Alcohol and Alcoholism.
“Children aged 4–8 become increasingly knowledgeable about drinking norms in specific situations which implies that they know in what kind of situation alcohol consumption is a common human behavior. This knowledge may put them at risk for early alcohol initiation and frequent drinking later in life.”
Children may learn from an early age when it’s appropriate to drink and how many drinks are okay from watching all the adults in their lives, a Dutch study suggests.
Researchers asked 75 fathers and 83 mothers how common it would be for adults to drink in a range of situations like during a party, at work, while watching television or while driving. Then, they asked 359 unrelated children, ages 4 to 8, in which situations they thought it was common or appropriate for adults to drink.
As kids got older, they became increasingly aware of social norms surrounding alcohol consumption, researchers report in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism. Familiarity with alcohol might make kids more likely to start drinking earlier in life or lead to more frequent drinking, the study team notes.
“Kids model parental behavior,” said Richard Mattick of the National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
“Parents who drink in front of youngsters make drinking a norm,” Mattick, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email.
Fathers drank more than mothers, the study found. Men consumed about 8.6 standardized alcohol units a week, compared with 4.4 for women. One unit contains 10 grams of ethanol, or pure alcohol, and might be equivalent to one to three drinks depending on the alcohol content in each beverage.
Parents most often said drinking was common at events like a party, Christmas dinner, restaurant dinner or barbeque.
Fewer parents found drinking common at everyday dinners, or while at a picnic or watching television. Drinking was least common while driving, reading, working or eating lunch, according to the parents.

Journalism
GLIMPSE INTO JOURNALISM
Writing for the media and how to write like a pro for newspapers, magazines, radio, television, advertising, theatre, cinema and now Internet, is a field which requires various Skills for a tough and challenging exposure. The world is at your beat if you possess the five D’s –Devotion, Determination, Dedication, Decision and Discrimination, there is nothing on the earth that one cannot do – Just add a bit of Love and Faith – Miracles happen. Proficiency in language skills, clarity of thought, good general knowledge, awareness, understanding and a pleasing personality sees you through in journalism. An excellent academic degree with additional postgraduate diplomas or specialization skills like MBA, CA, Computers and Engineer are in great demand for specialized reporting. However, today with the latest technology advancement, anyone with Awareness and proficient language skills can opt to become a writer Online on the Internet and contribute in Newsletter and earn credits & a living too.
Napoleon described a journalist as “a grumbler, a censor, a giver of advice… a tutor of nations,” and added that four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets. True, and more true in these days of moral corrosion in public life. Against this background, a journalist acquires great significance; he can make or break, destroy and mould. A writer can expose, review, inform, entertain, teach, preach or just about perform his role in writing media with clarity, power and impact. News, comments and entertainment are the axis on which the media world revolves. While newspapers and magazines by and large cater to the serious minded who are seeking in-depth reports and analyses or information or a bit of entertainment and education here or there, television and radio is for the fun loving. Nevertheless, the power of the electronic media to capture and bring live what is happening around the world into your drawing room, is simply matchless. If the electronic media is the first with news, the print media is the best with news – giving a wealth of insight, detail and perspective. The print media is unbeatable with range of coverage, local as well as global with additional inputs on entertainment, education, political, science, sports etc.
Journalism, in fact, is now a lot more exciting than it was during the early years of India’s Independence. The role that journalists have played as watchdogs of current affairs in recent years has given the profession itself a halo and a unique appeal of its own. Journalists today are both a feared and a respected lot. Television has in no way diminished the role of the press as the extended eyes and ears of the public.
An increasing number of graduates are opting for journalism as a first choice, a tough and challenging career, and while journalists may not earn as much or enjoy as many perks as an MBA, the excitement that their relationship with the public provides is tremendous. As watchdogs of the nation they are able to participate in the promotion of social welfare and development. That is a reward even the heftiest compensation package cannot match. No doubt many journalists have been accused of corruption and irresponsibility but the enormous public awareness they have generated and their role in shaping public sensitivity cannot be overlooked. Thousands of events happen everyday, which can neither be found in print media or can be viewed on television or surfed on net. Television viewing and Net surfing demands a lot of time, money and energy but for a mass community, print media is a sure fire way towards keeping oneself informed, aware, entertained, educated!
Towards Journalism, Free souls make an effort for overall positions in print media and one can check out for an Institute that offers a Journalism course.

Thanksgiving Day
Gandhiji had been Mascot followed by Sadhu Vasvani (25th November is Non Vegetarian Day) for vegetarianism. He said, “Take food as medicine and not in order to gratify the palate. Eating non veg itself brings out evil thoughts in human minds who become violent and destructive.
Now, as we shift towards the next universal festival ‘Thanksgiving Day’, (Fourth Thursday in Nov in US)
it’s amazing to know about the pilgrims and how people started celebrating this day when I read Ann McGovern’s Book ‘The Pilgrim’s First Thanksgiving’. Kids in west marvel at Thanksgiving daycelebrations and they smack their lips at many food dishes that were eaten at the first Thanksgiving like wild turkey, geese, ducks, deer, lobsters, clams, oysters and fish along with vegetables and pop corn. Even here, more Gen Y is towards eating Non Veg and it’s becoming a fashion n style. A simple argument goes, “If all eat veg, there will be more need of food and people would starve’
This reminds of a proverb which is rightly said, “What you think, you cook and what you cook, you eat and what you eat, accordingly thoughts flash in your mind”. So, Check it Out! Avoid Flesh, Avoid Fish and Avoid all the Non Veg dish! Go Vegetarian. After all, its your Life – Attitude makes a big Difference! Here’s my Recipe for Life – enjoy!
Keep the Faith!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY
4th Thursday in November
Fourth Thursday in November is celebrated as ‘Thanksgiving Day’ People thank God for his blessings. People can ‘Thank’ friends, foes and anyone for the experiences, happiness and sunshine they bring into their lives. Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day in America during the second winter in the new world. The first winter had been bad as nearly half of the people had perished due to lack of food and bad weather. But the following year, with the help of Indians who showed them how to plant Indian corn, the pilgrims had successful harvest. Governor William Bradford decided that December 13, 1621 be set aside for feasting and prayer. The Indians were invited to share the festival. Since than, Thanksgiving Day is been celebrated in America. However, it was only in 1941, the Congress in a joint resolution named the fourth Sunday in November as the official Thanksgiving Day.
Dating back, it is known that the Council thought to appoint and set apart the 29th day of June, as a day of Solemn Thanksgiving and praise to God for his Goodness and Favor. The First Thanksgiving Proclamation was however on June 20, 1676. The governing council of Charlestown, Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community securely established. By unanimous vote they instructed Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of thanksgiving, It is also known that the Pilgrims set ground at PlymouthRock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. At the beginning of the following fall, they had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed on the Mayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. And the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast — including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. It is believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year without the help of the natives The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true “thanksgiving” observance. It lasted three days.

International Vegetarian Day-Meatless Day
Go-vegetarianism – all 365 days. Gandhiji has been the Mascot followed by Sadhu Vasvani (25th Nov also Non-Veg Day) for Vegetarianism. Gandhiji’s ideology of khadi, vegetarianism and the natural way of life is observed in many parts of India. Gandhiji has said “Take the food as medicine and not in order to gratify the palate. Keep mind and body fully engaged in acts of service. Meditate on God as ‘Truth’. It is necessary to keep healthy. Eating meat itself brings out evil thoughts in human beings which make him violent and destructive. The proverb is rightly said “What you think, you cook and what you cook, you eat and what you eat, accordingly, thoughts flash in your mind” So, Check it out! Avoid flesh, avoid fish, and avoid all such non-veg dish!

Lord Ganesh
Inspirations from Lord Ganeshjee
Lord Ganesh’s BIG HEAD inspires us to ‘Think Big’ & ‘Profitably’
Lord Ganesh’s BIG EARS prompt us to listen patiently to new ideas & suggestion
Lord Ganesh’s NARROW EYES point to deep concentration needed to finish tasks in hand well and quickly
Lord Ganesh’s LONG NOSE tells us to poke around inquisitely to learn more
Lord Ganesh’s SMALL MOUTH reminds us to speak less and listen more.
Ganesha, also called Ganapati, is the god of wisdom, prudence, and salvation. Ga means “knowledge”, na means “salvation”, and isa and pati means “lord”. Ganesha is also said to mean ‘lord of the ganas’, Shiva’s multitude of attendants. In south India, Ganesha is worshipped as Pillaiyar. Ganesha is represented as a short, pot-bellied man with an elephant’s head with one tusk, four arms, and yellow skin. In mythology, the elephant symbolises devotion, patience and truth. His corpulent figure conveys prosperity as represented by the laddoos he is always shown with. In his hands, he holds a conch shell, a discus, a club, and a lotus. Ganesha rides on a mouse, signifying the unity of the small with the big. He is also the most widely worshipped deity. All ceremonies, religious or secular, begin with an invocation to Ganesha. His image is printed on cards sent out for any happy occasion. Usually before beginning any religious writing, he is invoked with words ‘Aum Shri Ganeshaya Namaha‘, literally meaning “Ganesha, I pray to you”. Most people, from student to shopkeeper, movie producer to nuclear scientist, begin work by invoking Ganesha, however briefly. The Puranas differ considerably in their account of Ganesha’s origin.
He is not mentioned before 500 AD and was quite insignificant until the mid-15th century. According to the Padma Purana, he is the younger son of Shiva and Parvati. According to the Shiva Purana, Ganesha was born of the scurf from Parvati’s body. Once, when Shiva was away, Parvati wanted someone to guard the door while she bathed. Ganesha from the scurf of her body, she moulded a boy and gave him life. She told him to attend the door and not allow anyone to enter. Shiva returned, and when he tried to enter, was stopped by Ganesha. An argument arose, and enraged, Shiva cut off Ganesha’s head and entered. When Parvati discovered that Shiva had entered by beheading her son, she was inconsolable. Repentant, Shiva ordered that the head of the first living being that was found should be brought to him. This happened to be the head of an elephant calf. He placed this on Ganesha’s body and restored him to life. A legend explains why Ganesha is worshipped before any other deity or prior to any important event. It happened that Shiva asked Kartikeya and Ganesha to circle the world and return. Kartikeya hurried off on his peacock, but Ganesha walked around Shiva and Parvati. He explained that for him, his parents constituted the world. Pleased, Shiva granted him a boon, saying that before undertaking any important task, people would pray to Ganesha. According to the Narasimha Purana, if he is not worshipped at the beginning of a ceremony, he creates obstacles for the performers. Therefore, no matter what the occasion or ceremony be, Ganesha is worshipped before all other deities. For this reason, he is called Vighneshwara, the remover of all obstacles. Ganesha’s mouse, by gnawing its way through everything, is said to symbolise the god’s ability to destroy all obstacles. Ganesha is believed to have written the Mahabharata to Veda Vyasa’s dictation. When the sage asked Ganesha to write down the epic, the learned god agreed on condition that his pen should not stop moving until the story was completed. Vyasa agreed but said that Ganesha should write only if he completely understood what was dictated. So whenever Ganesha stopped to consider Vyasa’s complicated compositions, the sage would use the time to compose more verses. Ganesha is also known as Ekdanta, or the one with one tooth, because one of his tusks is broken. The reason for this, according to the Padma Purana, is that one day when Shiva was sleeping, Parashurama came to visit him. However, Ganesha would not allow Parashurama in, for his father’s sleep would be disturbed. When Parashurama insisted he be permitted entry, a fight broke out. In the course of their struggle, Parashurama threw his axe at Ganesha. This axe had been given to him by Shiva. Recognising the axe and out of reverence for his father, Ganesha refused to intercept the weapon. He bowed and took its impact on one of his tusks, which broke. The Puranas say that the fourth day of the month, known as Chaturthi, is specially auspicious for Ganesha worship. It is believed that Ganesha was born on the Chaturthi of bright night of Bhadra (August-september). It is however, considered unlucky to look at moon this night. It is said, once Ganesha was fell off its rat and moon laughed at him. This annoyed Ganesh and he cursed the moon saying that ill luck would befall on anyone who looked at the moon on that night. Lokmanya Tilak revived the observance of Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra where it is worshipped more, for 10 days and on the 10th day procession carrying Ganesh idol accompanied by singing and dancing is immersed in water, this known as Visarjana.
Reincarnated in different yugas in different forms to right wrongs, it is believed that Ganesha will be born again as ‘Dhoomaketu’ in Kali Yuga, to exterminate the evil and restore peace and harmony.
Ganesha Namah
Ganesha has many names. The main ones are Ganapati, Vigneshwara, and Vinayaka. (Lord of the tribe, Controller of all obstacles and Prominent leader).
Om Vigneshvaraye Namaha
May all tasks be completed without any unwarranted delays or obstacles
Om Samukhaye Namaha
May it be full of beauty and grace, or visual appeal
Om Ekdantaye Namah
May the task and its purpose be our priority list till goal is accomplished
Om Rajanathaye Namah
May we become large heartened and attain power to see difference between positive and negative
Om Rajkaranaye Namah
May we be blessed with the powers of self actualisation
Om Lambodaraye Namah
May we be blessed to possess powers to keep to ourself and keep focused till the task is competed
Om Dhumraketuvaye Namah
May we attain fame by possessing clarity of thought
Om Bhalchandraye Namah
May we possess good thoughts and ideals, maintain our humility and hold head high with respect
Om Vikataye Namaha
May we be blessed with energies to overcome negatives and win over enemies
Om Vinakaye Namaha
Bless us with qualities of Leadership
Om Ganakshaye Namaha
May we lead the Leaders
Ganesha is popularly depicted with his right hand in abhaya mudra, conveying his protectiveness towards mankind. In his other hands, he carries an ankush to goad us towards the path of forthrightness, a noose as a constant reminder that material life and earthly bonds are no more constrictions that inhibit piety, and modak to denote the sweetness of inner spirituality. Ganesha reminds us to be ‘Disciplined’ and excercise to live life as per the Shahstras as good human beings.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival celebrated with great devotion and reverence. The birth of Lord Ganesha, on the fourth day of Bhadrapada Shukla, is an important day for devotees. This festival is celebrated for 10 days from Ganesh Chaturthi (birth date) to Anant Chaturdashi (the tenth day of His immersion). It is believed that worshipping Lord Ganesha during this festival bring good luck and prosperity to one’s household.
Lord Ganesha, who is considered to be the God of wisdom, prudence and prosperity, has been worshipped right from the Vedic times.Every ceremony, be it religious or personal, is started by invoking Lord Ganesha’s blessings by the solemn recitation of Om Ganeshaya Namaha (I bow to Thee Lord Ganesha).
Ganesh Chaturthi was made popular by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. His motive was to unite people and strengthen the patriotic fervour among Indians. Hindus came together for the festival, which became a source of political awakening against the British regime. People forgot their caste and creed to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi.
On the first day of the festival, the idol of Lord Ganesha is installed in homes, temples, podiums, etc. The Lord is placed on raised platforms for people to pray and pay their respect. A priest, usually clad in red silk dhoti and shawl, invokes life into the idol amidst the chanting of mantras. This ritual is called pranapratishhtha. After this, the shhodashopachara (16 ways of paying tribute) follows.Coconut, jaggery, 21 modaks (rice flour preparation), 21 durva (trefoil) blades and red flowers are offered. The idol is anointed with sandal paste (rak ta chandan). Through out the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda and Gana pati Atharva Shirsha Up anishad, and Ganesha Stotra from the Narada Purana are chanted.
For 10 days, from bhadrapad shudh chaturthi to ananta chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped.
On the 11th ar day, the idol is hrough the streets taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing, to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolising a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode to Mount Kailasha. It is said that Lord Ganesha takes away with him the misfortune of all mankind. After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor, people carry the idol to the river to immerse it. It is said that the universe is in a constant state of change and that form eventually gives way to formlessness. However, the energy still remains. The immersion of the statues in water and subsequent destruction of them serves as a reminder of this belief. On the 11th day, people bid adieu to their favourite and most beloved God; this marks the end of the 10-day festival. Overall, anesh Chaturthi brings with it a lot of excitement and happiness.

Chandrayaan 2 successfully Launched to Orbit by ISRO
Special moments that will be etched in the annals of our glorious history!
The launch of #Chandrayaan2 illustrates the prowess of our scientists and the determination of 130
crore Indians to scale new frontiers of science.
Every Indian is immensely proud today! pic.twitter.com/v1ETFneij0
— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) July 22, 2019
The moment Chandrayaan 2 took off from the Satish Dhavan Space Centre in Sriharikota today, 22nd July 2019 after the first attempt was aborted on July 15th following a technical glitch. GSLV MK-III has successfully injected Chandrayaan
2 into the defined orbit, Moon landing scheduled for 7 September. GSLV MK-IIIis the heaviest rocket built by ISRO.
” GSLV MK-III has only been flown three times so far. In comparison, the MOM mission rode atop the smaller and less powerful Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) that then had nearly 25 successful launches to its credit. The last-minute calling-off of Chandryaan-2’s launch on 15 July 2019 due to a leak in the GSLV’s cryogenic engine only underscores how inherently unpredictable and risky space missions are.
The GLSV Mk III has now successfully lifted off from Sriharikota and placed the Chandrayaan 2 payload into the desired orbit for lunar transfer.
Another fact which adds complexity to the C2 mission is that while being only the second attempt of ISRO to reach the moon, it comprises a lander and a rover in addition to an orbiter module, each of them carrying several science payloads. The first-ever successful soft-landing on the Moon was performed in 1966 by the USSR and only in 1969 have they attempted to include a rover, having spent the intervening three years gaining confidence in flying orbiters and landers.” says Rachana Reddy, ex ISRO Engineer.
If Lunar landing of Apollo 11 was hailed as ‘Giant leap for mankind’ the launch of Chandrayaan2 will be remembered as a ‘Giant leap for womankind.’The ISRO Team is led by Space Scientists M.Vanitha & Ritu Karidhal. The successful launch of Chandrayaan2 is as much a success of our rapidly evolving space sciences as it is of the collective effort of 1.3 billion aspirations to challenge the status quo, & aim for the moon.

Illuminating Darkness by Monica Gupta
Illuminating Darkness by Monica Gupta
Book Review by Ilaxi Patel
The Preface begins with ‘The Book Talks….’ And I drifted to dive into Imagination world to end up with ocean of poetic conversation with self, seeking to enlighten my journey to sublime illumination!
The Poet Monica Gupta has used the words more consciously dealing with deep human emotions, philosophical thought which have strong visual and sensory impact. Spontaneous as I feel and vividly descriptive. The vibrations drift the tone and mood revealing Attitude – feelings with style of language or expression of thought used to develop the subject. Certain tones include the depth. Words reveal deep truth, irony and satire. Even inspiring, philosophical, life lessons, reflections, love, on everyday life as the Book contents divides into these sections of forms of Poetry.
The writing reflects effective therapy to a depressed mind too. Life’s struggle and strife, facing hardship yet living in absolute reality is a challenge. Here’s when Monica’s writing come forth to eliminate darkness and self innovate to dive into own reflections. Words evoke mental images that carry depths of meaning. Imagination, combination of diction and tangible initial impact has the potential to tap the inner wisdom of a reader to arouse responses of meditative feel, inspiring, loving and supportive to reveal life lessons worth living to the mark.
‘Laugh Away’ is one example of a penned poem by the Author that reflects a rhyme and reason to live to leave behind strife.
Monica Gupta says,
Like a preposterous kid,
Life tickles amidst serious mid.
With disciplined practice, I try to fight its fervid will,
only to realize, it hurts more in a rigit still.
So now, like a jester, I wiggle and jiggle,
Laughing along with the Life’s tickle.
Monica Gupta choose her words that follow each other in a sequence determined to discuss the arrangements that result certain terms. Her point of view is from her perspectives and talks of another character.
For eg. In the Chapter “Love”
I said “Enough”, you said “more”
You said, “speed”, I said, “slow”
The rifts grew into ridges,
Drifting us to different shores,
But the heart needs no bridges or boats,
A smile is enough to set us forth.
More, what I observed are the thought provoking liners, soulful musings, inspiring quotations and well depicted with eye catching visuals – well placed, thoughtfully planned and organized. It definitely captivates the readers. In My Duos, she begins, “My pen breathes life into the musings of my heart and mind. Together with my diary, they are my closest companions. …..Further, she adds her narrative imagination that flow words to powerful might of a Pen with a visual of a neat pen graphic, quite appealing and appropriate to the words.
Nope, I wouldn’t prolong my review more as this “Illuminating Darkness” by Monica Gupta is truly mesmerizing that you would even want to flaunt to recite her verses ! There are many Poems, quotes and musings, a delight for light, quick read and ponder over for a while – wondering and wandering to Neverlands to enlighten self and illuminate darkness.
A sure pick – Read and Recite, Think and dream, enlighten and illuminate all darkness around the soul. Just be Human and spread the love.
