{NEW!} DexCom For Mac…Finally (And Sort Of)

DexCom Portrait

Because DexCom has never been Mac compatible (which is lame considering that they are working on sending data directly to an iPhone), we began using Diasend to upload and view our DexCom data. Diasend is free to use and gives me some basic reports.

(See the post I can finally upload our CGM to our Mac…and the angels sang!)

With no fanfare, DexCom finally added support for Mac users in the form of DexCom Portrait. It would have been nice had they let us know, right? It’s a little limited in that...

Robotic Pancreas, You’re Going To Hollywood! (Video)

My eyes and ears always perk up when I notice “diabetes in the wild.” While watching American Idol last night I noticed the DexCom case clipped to a guy’s guitar strap. (Though I think he’s the only person I’ve ever seen that wears the included case.)

Adam Lasher is the nephew of Carlos Santana and sang an original song while playing guitar with a broken thumb, something our family can appreciate because Q has played guitar and piano with a broken arm and, most recently, tried to play percussi...

{Throwback Thursday} Fish Pajamas and Blood-Curdling Screams

Throwback Thursday

Join me each Thursday this year as I begin retelling our story from the very beginning and as I share some of my favorite posts that I have written over the years. It’s hard to believe that this May we will be celebrating Q’s 8th d-annivesary.

We had received the diabetes diagnosis and jumped into the car to drive about three hours to get her to a children’s hospital. We finally arrived after the long journey and settled into the hospital.

{Type 1 Tuesday} 01.20.15

Type 1 Tuesday

Since the new year I must have bookmarked 20 blog posts, news stories, and medical reports to share with you. Here are a five articles and videos that I have found interesting…

Diabetes & Taxes

ThePerfectD has a great summary of things to think about when filing your taxes and what diabetes accoutrements you might be able to get a tax break on.

I would add that your employer may offer a flexible spending account (abbreviated FSA) that allows you to set aside money pre-tax to use for qualified me...

{New!} Why Having Your Child Change Their Lancet Isn’t Actually About Changing Their Lancet

Changing Lancets

As a d-parent you may not think this is a big deal at all (and we should all pick and choose what’s an important issue for ourselves). And that’s okay. But changing her lancet regularly is something that we have our own child do and something that we feel is an important part of her diabetes management. What follows isn’t a rant, per se, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the lancet changing debate and why adult PWD’s should stop judging d-parents.

It’s funny because some of the most seeming...

{Throwback Thursday} The Longest Drive

Throwback Thursday

Join me each Thursday this year as I begin retelling our story from the very beginning and as I share some of my favorite posts that I have written over the years.

Some of you have been at this diabetes game for a long time, just like our family. But some of you are brand new, likely still shell-shocked, and still finding your groove with diabetes management.

Last week I shared the very beginning of our story with diabetes: our daughter’s diagnosis. This week I pick up where we left off, having...

{New!} A Caregiver’s Journey To Pump Therapy Series

OmniPod Suite D

Over the past year I have shared our journey from multiple daily injections (MDI) to pumping with the OmniPod insulin pump over on Insulet’s Suite D Blog. The final installment “Experiences Starting the Pump and How Life Has Changed” has just been published. If you are considering an insulin pump–any insulin pump–I encourage you to read the series.

I don’t “officially endorse” products here on D-Mom Blog, but the OmniPod is the pump that we use and was the right choice for our family. I always...

Downton Diabetes (Warning: Spoilers!)

Warning…potential spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk and don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey airs each week right when we are putting the kids to bed. Since we don’t have cable I either have to half watch it or wait to watch it on PBS’ website the next day.

As I watched Downton Abbey this week (Season 5 Episode 2) I kept getting interrupted by the kids who seemed to think they were entitled to their nightly bedtime story and snuggle. In all seriousness, my husband put them both to bed...

Q was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in May of 2008. She was three, nearly four, and her baby brother was just about to turn one. Her dia...
