Another Thing People With Diabetes CAN Do
Even if you aren’t a racing fan, you might have heard of Charlie Kimball and Ryan Reed.
On Saturday, Ryan Reed won Daytona. In his post-win interview he talks about how, when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes four years ago, he was told he couldn’t drive a race car. He didn’t take no for an answer.
Whether or not you follow racing, this is yet another great example of someone who (literally) hasn’t let diabetes slow him down.

{Kids First, Diabetes Second} A Positive Outlook
I know it soundscliché but a positive attitude can go a long way. When diabetes management is getting the best of you, think about these tips I shared in my book Kids First, Diabetes Second.
Please enjoy this excerpt from the book…
CHAPTER ELEVEN: Your Support System
A Positive Outlook
Dealing with diabetes day in and day out can really take a toll on a parent. We are exhausted from disrupted sleep schedules, zombie our way through work days, and somehow juggle the activities and demands of famil...

Sisterly Support
One of the things I love about writing for OmniPod’s Suite D blog is getting to chat with some pretty awesome people. Recently I had a chance to interview several women (and one d-girl!) that I admire for different pieces. This week you can read my interview with Brandy Barnes, founder of DiabetesSisters. DiabetesSisters offers online support, meet ups, and a conference for women with diabetes…of all types...

Spare A Rose, Save A Child
I don’t normally get or give roses at Valentine’s Day so here’s another price shopping comparison: for the cost of one fancy Hallmark card which will likely find its way into the recycling bin, you could give one month’s worth of insulin to a child. And now you’ve also saved a tree.
As families who live in a developed nation, we complain about and debate the price of test strips, the accuracy of test strips, access to diabetes technology such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, a...

{Type 1 Tuesday} 02.10.15 BONUS
This week is sort of a “bonus” Type 1 Tuesday with some posts that sorta deal with diabetes, but weren’t really intended as such. But I thought they were interesting and wanted to share…
Pencil Cases…For Diabetes Supplies?I came across a post that showed a bunch of different pencil cases and I immediately thought that some might be good for holding diabetes supplies.
Read “Pencil Cases, Pouches, & Rolls: A Comprehensive Guide.”
Eating Dinner Together
“It turns out that sitting down for a nightly...

Abbott Libre Review
How great would it be to know your child’s blood sugar with the wave of a wand…without poking their tender little fingers? The Abbott FreeStyle Libre is currently on the market in Europe and may be FDA-approved in the US some time in 2016. While it doesn’t give continuous BG readings on the receiver like a CGM does or alarm for low or high blood sugars, you hold the receiver up to the sensor placed on t...

{New!} Asking For Reasonable Accommodations
I am sure that you have heard about families hiring people with disabilities to accompany them to Disney so that they could get a Guest Assistance Card* so that they wouldn’t have to wait in lines. It was the greed of these people who needed absolutely no accommodations that made it difficult for those of us who do. And it was those people who caused Disney to reevaluate their policy and stop issuing the passes.
When Q and I spent a day at Disney a few summers ago, we were able to get a guest...

{Kids First, Diabetes Second} The Dreaded A1c (a.k.a. the Report Card)
We recently had our quarterly endocrinology appointment. I wanted to share with you what I wrote in my book Kids First, Diabetes Second about the A1c and why you shouldn’t feel judged by it.
(By the way, growth hormones are going to be the death of me. I fear what puberty will bring!)
Please enjoy this excerpt from the book…
CHAPTER 11: Your Support System
The Dreaded A1c (a.k.a. the Report Card)
I have probably said a dozen times in this book that you need to do the best you can, given the knowle...

DexCom For Mac…Finally (And Sort Of)
Because DexCom has never been Mac compatible (which is lame considering that they are working on sending data directly to an iPhone), we began using Diasend to upload and view our DexCom data. Diasend is free to use and gives me some basic reports.
(See the post I can finally upload our CGM to our Mac…and the angels sang!)
With no fanfare, DexCom finally added support for Mac users in the form of DexCom Portrait. It would have been nice had they let us know, right? It’s a little limited in that...
