{Type 1 Tuesday} 05.12.15 Sports Edition
Here are some tidbits that I have found interesting and wanted to share…
Flo Simba – BoxingI would think that boxing would be a difficult sport to manage in terms of diabetes, not only because of the heavy workouts and training, but also because they have to maintain a very tight weight. “Flo’s achievement of returning successfully to the ring should not be underestimated – he should be regarded as an icon for anyone with type 1 diabetes who has a dream. Flo’s return to the ring was not an...

We were all hoping that there would be a type 1 diabetes story on Downton Abbey and were a little disappointed that there wasn’t. (Read “Downton Diabetes.”) But given that Downton takes place literally right after the discovery of insulin, it had potential to be heartbreakin...

You Might Be A D-Mom If…
I think we could all use a little humor when thinking about and discussing type 1 diabetes…
You might be a d-mom if…you tell your kid to eat that candy quietly or you will make her spit it out and you don’t care if she already bolused for it!

Here are some tidbits that I have found interesting and wanted to share…
Dexcom Share (or not)Parents may think that DexCom share is a great thing, but do kids really want their parents seeing their every move (or blood sugar!)? Grace, who is just a bit older than my Q, has just started using the Share and her mom Penny gives some perspective on privacy.

{JDRF Children’s Congress 2015} Introduction Video
Q was selected by JDRF to participate in the 2015 Children’s Congress this summer in Washington, DC.
This was her second time applying and she’s thrilled that she gets to represent other children living with type 1 diabetes.
Our family has many tasks to complete between now and July when we will meet with our Congressmen and women to urge renewal of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP). Our first task was completing a video in which Q introduces herself and answers one of several suggested que...

{Throwback Thursday} I Already Know, You Don’t Have To Tell Me
Join me each Thursday this year as I begin retelling our story from the very beginning and as I share some of my favorite posts that I have written over the years. It’s hard to believe that this May we will be celebrating Q’s 7th d-anniversary.
This week I’m thinking back to aninteraction we had where Q received pity really irked me and made me wonder why people always have to tell you about every single bad thing that they know about diabetes.
I Already Know, You Don’t Have To Tell MeI tr...

{Kids First, Diabetes Second} Diabetes Preparedness Kit
Spring weather is often turbulent, so it’s a good time to take stock and make sure you are prepared for an emergency by having a stash of diabetes supplies at the ready. This is an excerpt from the chapter titled “Diabetes Central.” Come back Monday when I share photos of our current diabetes preparedness kit.
Q learned about “preparedness” at school and had the idea to make a diabetes preparedness kit at home. Every part of the country has some type of severe wea...

{Type 1 Tuesday} 04.07.15 School Edition
Here are three blog posts, all having to do in some way with school, that I wanted to share…
Hallie, author of The Princess and the Pump, has the unique perspective of being both a teacher and a d-mom. After her own child was diagnosed, she realized just how much she didn’t know about type 1 diabetes as a teacher. She shares her unique insight on how you can make sure your child’s teacher knows what they should about type 1 diabetes.

{YouTube Tuesday} Encapsulation Explained
“A new video, “Sketching Encapsulation,” was created for JDRF’s FY2014 Annual Report. Albert J. Hwa, Ph.D., Director of Discovery Research at JDRF, explains encapsulation and outlines four encapsulation projects that are currently supported by JDRF.”
Q was recently asking me what encapsulation is. I tried to explain to her that it would be like a small sack implanted under the skin that would contain insulin producing beta cells and which would have a membrane that would fend off the autoimm...

{Kids First, Diabetes Second} Sugar-Free Foods
The Atlantic recently had a short piece about gummy bears and how purchasing and eating a five pound bag of sugar-free gummies can do a world of hurt on your stomach.
(The Atlantic: What’s in Those Haribo Gummy Bears?)
I caution ALL THE TIME not to give kids with type 1 diabetes sugar free candy. It has just as many, if not more carbs than regular sugar filled candy and can cause some serious GI distress, especially in little bodies. But lots of well-meaning friends and family think that sug...
