CrossFit Gets More Press, Still Doesn’t Get It

My post CrossFit: Gets It Wrong, Won’t Back Down has hit a chord with quite a few people who I think, like me, are just incredibly frustrated with dissemination of misinformation about diabetes. And many, many people are frustrated with CrossFit’s escalating defense of their ludicrous post on Twitter.

Here is video from ABC’s Good Morning America recapping the controversy. Listen for the response from CrossFit’s CEO, it’s a good one!

CrossFit: Gets It Wrong, Won’t Back Down

“Make sure you pour some out for your dead homies.”—Greg Glassman

It’s been seven years since Q’s diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. I don’t get offended very easily anymore because as this point I’ve heard it all. Most of the time I just shake my head or roll my eyes because if I got bent out of shape every time some inaccurate stereotype about diabetes was put out there, I would probably be depressed and stressed.

This week a company got it wrong. On so many levels. But what ruffled my feathers...

Recycling Pods…now for free!

OmniPod Recycling

OmniPod Recycling

Diabetes management produces A LOT of trash. A lot. And much of it can’t just go into the garbage and then into the landfill (or shouldn’t). One item that shouldn’t go into the landfill are batteries. Some states have regulations on how you can and can’t dispose of sharps (syringes).

Our local pharmacy used to have a free sharps collection program, but when they were taken over by a national pharmacy that was one of the first things to go.

We have always participated in Insulet’s pod recycl...

{Kids First, Diabetes Second} Amusement Parks

Kids First Diabetes Second

Kids First Diabetes Second Book

In the “Less Stress, More Happiness” chapter of Kids First, Diabetes Second, there are several sections about “Summer Fun.” I share how we navigate amusement parks, water parks, camping, and travel. We have some of these activities planned for our family this summer. My son put “going to an amusement park” on his summer bucket list this year.

Amusment Parks

I love going to amusement parks in the summer. As a kid, I would ride the coasters over and over again. We have introduced our kids to...

{2:00 AM Book Club} How To Raise An Adult

I received a copy of this book, please see the disclaimer below.

Raise An Adult

I am raising a child with type 1 diabetes and I have been thinking a lot about giving her independence and the tools she needs to take care of herself and not be under the constant watch of her parents. While I’m not quite ready to hand over overnight care to her just yet, I want her to have many of the freedoms and experiences that her peers are having. She is doing a three-week day camp this summer where she will self-manage...

Type 1 Tuesday

Here are some tidbits that I have found interesting and wanted to share…

Is It A Cure?

PWD Renza of Diabetogenic writes in her post “Is It A Cure?” about her experience talking on TV about the artificial pancreas and her conversation with a cab driver about the cure. I encourage you to read her post and then go to the TV station’s website to watch the video.

{YouTube Tuesday} Layzie Bone To The Rescue

YouTube Tuesday

I’m not familiar with rapper Layzie Bone, but he’s in the news for helping assist a motorist who, driving erratically, wrecked his vehicle. The driver was having a severe low blood sugar. Layzie Bone and other people on the scene fed the guy apples and oranges until EMS could help.

I have two thoughts on this:

1. It is very, very important to check blood sugar before driving. As the officer in the video states, a person driving while having a low blood sugar resembles the poor driving of som...

{Kids First, Diabetes Second} Play Dates

Kids First Diabetes Second

Kids First Diabetes Second Book

Given that school will be out in a matter of weeks or days for most kids, the littles will likely be asking for play dates with friends to fill some of the summer downtime. I thought you might like some tips on how to ease your mind when you send your child off on a playdate and how to prepare the other parent. The following excerpt is from the section “Play Dates and Sleepovers” from the chapter “Less Stress, More Happiness.”

Play Dates

How many times have you heard, “Mom, can we have a p...

Type 1 Tuesday

Here are some tidbits that I have found interesting and wanted to share…

Sleep, Elusive Sleep

I don’t have to tell you that one of the worst parts of having a child with type 1 diabetes is the sleepless nights. Just the other night I managed to be in bed. asleep. before 10:00 pm. and wouldn’t you know the Dexcom alarmed every 15 minutes because Q’s blood sugar was low and just didn’t want to come up. According to this article, the lack of sleep really is taking a toll on us.

Diabetes Management: An Imperfect Science (And Why We Can NEVER Really Get It Right)

Disclaimer: I’m not guaranteeing that any of the diabetes math below is accurate in the least because I don’t do any diabetes math by hand anymore. Thank goodness!

Disclaimer 2: Sorry to be all doom and gloom today. Also, long-winded.

So here’s the thing: There are fifteen things keeping you from having perfect blood sugar…many of which you can’t even control. (Number one being that busted pancreas!)

Two of the tools that people with type 1 diabetes use to make most of their decisions are blo...
