For a few years preceding that time, several family members had encouraged (some would say "bugged") me to try my hand at writing, but life didn't accommodate adding another activity. Now that one child has left the nest and the other has almost finished high school, however, my schedule has evolved in a way that allows me to put pen to paper. And I must say, I've enjoyed it even more than I thought I would!(less)

My next book, "The Devil's Due," is undergoing editing. To be honest, editing takes longer than writing the first draft (as it should, if one's goal is producing the best possible novel). Given that I just started edits, I suspect TDD won't be out until November or--more likely--December or January.(less)

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”
Aristotle

“The best portion of a good man's life: his little, nameless unremembered acts of kindness and love.”
William Wordsworth, Lyrical Ballads

“That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day.”
Charles Dickens, Great Expectations

“This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals–sounds that say listen to this, it is important.”
Gary Provost
