Week 14 – 20 ridiculously simple ways to live longer (and better)

Last week, one of my readers asked me to share my best self-care secret. Because life isn’t static and circumstances change, it’s impossible to pick one.

So I told her I’d share twenty in this week’s blog.

After spending so much time in hospitals over the last couple of years before my dad died, I’m motivated to make my health a top priority.

Hospitals can do that to people.

Here’s my list. These are the things I try to do almost every day. When I don’t, I never beat myself up, though. That w...

Week 13 – Might this be proof that the soul is eternal and survives death?

This morning, I searched through my newsletter archives looking for a blog to repost. The last few months have been filled with a lot of loss for my family and me. After losing my dad in November, we lost my uncle (his brother), and now another uncle (my mom’s brother), this weekend.

It’s that time of life…

I came across a story I shared from our friends Bob and Melissa who host AfterLifeTV.com. It was exactly what I needed today – a comforting story about the eternal nature of the soul.

In 2...

Week 12 – Speaking Spanish, working with energy, and what happens when you listen to Life.

Last week I had something interesting happen.

A few months ago I downloaded an app called Duolingo because I wanted to learn Spanish. I had studied the language for three years while in school and loved it, but then, like a lot of people, I stopped using it and subsequently lost the ability.

When I downloaded the app, I used it almost every day until I entered into the final edit stage of my new book and needed to put it on hold. I was too busy to focus on anything else.

Last week I started u...

Week 11 – How to keep up with technology (and other crazy life changes)

For six months I was annoyed by the message that kept popping up on my TV:

Time to upgrade your equipment, please click here to order.

Our cable box was more than ten years old but every time the invitation to upgrade came on the screen, I hit cancel and continued watching my show.

I don’t want to have to deal with setting up new equipment, I thought to myself. I already know how to use what we have, so why create problems.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

That was until the message sh...

Week 10 – How To Feel Peaceful And Calm In Five Minutes.

All week long I’ve been listening to the Tapping World Summit and it’s allowed me to add new techniques to my teaching toolbox so I can use them in my workshops and retreats.

I continue to be blown away by how effective this simple, self-administered process can be in treating everything from physical pain, to fears and phobias, and self-defeating habits.

You can listen to the remainder of the summit until Friday by signing up here.

As I’ve tapped along with a variety of experts, I’m reminded...

Week 9 – How my cat taught me to stop worrying

I woke this morning to find Poupon sound asleep under my left arm. I watched the velvety gray fur on his cheeks move in and out as he breathed. I studied the whiskers splayed atop his eyelids and the tiny satellite dish ears that turned this way and that as they captured the random sounds of the morning.

These are the moments that matter, I think to myself as I lay in my warm bed, listening to the wind.

Take it in.
Enjoy this experience.
You’d miss it if it were gone.

Rather than give in to m...

Week 8 – If You’re Feeling Anxious, Please Do This.

On Friday night, my husband Michael and I had dinner with two friends who are healthcare professionals in private practice. During the meal, I asked how their patients were doing given the stressful political climate.

“Not good,” they both said in unison.

Since the election, more than 75% of the people they treat are coming in with stress-related health complaints like anxiety, insomnia, depression, and chronic headaches.

That’s a lot of people.

There are great changes underway and regardless...

Week 7 – Will you be a Valentine?

Last year I joined a local Facebook group started by a woman who lives in our small town. Members of the group share local news, offer referrals for home repairs, help find lost pets, and make requests for support.

Three days ago, a woman posted a notice looking for someone to shovel her walkway and stairs after a snowstorm. She and her husband had both hurt their backs, and she hoped to find a kid who wanted to earn some extra money.

After the storm, she posted again, expressing her surprise...

Week 6 – Self Care During Tumultuous Times

On Monday, I’m heading to the Stageneck Inn in York, Maine to spend three days putting the final touches on my next book, Waking Up in Winter – In Search of What Really Matters at Midlife. It will be published at the end of this year and I’m very excited to share it with you. More on that later…

I’m looking forward to going back to the Inn and will be there again in April for our next Self Care by the Sea retreat. These events are very special to me and the women who attend are terrific. They...

Week 5 – What to do when fear and anger take over.

It’s 8:30 am and I’m sitting on my yoga mat at the gym, getting ready for a yin class – a type of gentle yoga designed to stretch the body in deep and restorative ways.

I need gentle.
I need deep.
I need to be restored.

My heart breaks for the state of our world right now.

As I lie back on my mat and tune in, I feel the weight of sorrow sitting heavy on my chest. The body holds the truth…

I’m scared.
I’m angry.
I’m so, so sad.

I breathe deep and allow these feelings to rise to the surface. Th...
