Week 6 – You can’t heal without this.

I sat at my desk feeling grateful as I read the emails and Facebook posts in response to last week’s blog about the death of our little red squirrel.

When I wrote the blog, I thought I was simply sharing a story about loss, but given how much better I felt after reading the mail, I realized something important. I was responding to an unconscious need to experience the healing power of community.

While there’s individual work to be done in order for us to grow like going to therapy, reading bo...

Week 5 – What to do when the world feels too harsh to handle.

Sometimes the world is a tough place.

Today, when I returned home from the gym, I discovered a dead, red squirrel on the side of the road in front of our house.

I pulled into the driveway and stopped the car, feeling angry and heartbroken. That’s our red squirrel, I thought to myself as I started to cry.

Most mornings I begin the day by feeding Poupon, filling the bird feeders on the deck, and refreshing the water in the birdbath. Then, once Poupon and the birds are taken care of, I make myse...

Week 4 – Who are the sheep in your herd?

Good friends are good self-care.

That’s the thought I’m left with this morning as I watch a friend/colleague walk to his car after spending a few days here at our home.

Or what we affectionately like to call “self-care rehab.”smiley2

There are few things more nourishing to me than concentrated time with someone who feels like soul family – a curious, deep thinker who rouses long conversations about life and art or the multi-dimensional nature of reality.

As a young woman I often felt like a misfit,...

Week 3 – What would you dedicate your life to?

I sit completely still, staring into the warm, chocolate brown eyes of a woman I don’t know.

I feel awkward and embarrassed. I want to look away. But I’ve come here to this workshop to be challenged, to be a student instead of a teacher. I’m hoping to meet new parts of myself.

So I stay focused on her eyes even though I feel vulnerable and exposed. I take a deep breath and ready myself to share my soul with a stranger.

The teacher gives my partner her instructions. For the next five minutes s...

Week 2 – What to do when you can’t forgive someone

Yesterday I put on snowshoes and went outside for a walk. As I trudged through the backyard, I made a spontaneous decision to dedicate my walk to forgiveness.

Turns out, I have a lot of work to do when it comes to forgiving people.

I think of myself as a fairly loving and compassionate woman. If you were to ask me about holding grudges, I’d tell you that I’m someone who lets things go.

But the truth is I’d be lying.

Sometimes, who we think we are is quite different from who we really are.

At...

Week 1 – This Might Happen If You Ask Friends For Advice

“What could I do to love myself more in 2016?”

In last week’s newsletter, I wrote about my plans to ask my husband and a few close friends this question given what they know about me and how I live my life.

So I did it.

While the answers didn’t surprise me, the fact that everyone said nearly the same thing, did.

Their advice boiled down to this:

Receive more.
Let others take charge.
Say yes to what you really want.
Honor your sensual side.
Be vulnerable and yielding.

Clearly I have an excitin...
