Week 42 – Is it time to come home to yourself?
The waning afternoon sun cast soft golden light on the trees in our backyard and I thought to myself, I really should go for a walk in the woods to enjoy the beautiful autumn colors. But instead, I went into my office to prepare this week’s newsletter. I wanted to share another excerpt from my upcoming book, Waking Up in Winter: In Search of What Really Matters at Midlife. (It’ll be released on December 19th).
When I sat down to pick a random journal entry after closing my eyes, I laughed out...

Week 41 – Are the stars out tonight?
Remember when we were kids coming back to a new school year after a long break and the teacher asked us to write about (or talk about) what we did over the summer?
This week I’m sharing a favorite summer memory I call:
Are the Stars Out Tonight?
It was 10:30pm when the oppressive summer heat finally gave way to cool night air that kept the mosquitoes at bay. I plopped down on a zero gravity chair in the middle of our deck, pushed back on the arms, and came face-to-face with a stunning, cloudl...

Week 40 – Check out my first date with a turkey vulture
A few years ago, while out for a walk in our neighborhood, I discovered a Canadian goose with a broken wing. Unsure of what to do, and worried about her ability to survive winter, I did some research and found a pretty remarkable place just north of our home called the Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick, Maine.
The woman who answered my hotline call at the center was able to give me helpful advice about what to do to get the best care for the goose (she connected me with a local wildlife reh...

Week 39 – Enter the “You’ve Paid Your Dues” stage of life.
Near the end of October I’ll have a chance to spend the weekend with another great group of women during our retreat at the Stage Neck Inn. I love these events. It gives all of us a chance to step out of our busy lives and come together in a comfortable, beautiful setting to discover and talk about the things that matter most.
This time our focus for the retreat will be on health – cultivating the habits that feel good and give us energy, stamina, and power, so we can live long, satisfying li...

Week 38 – Excerpt from my new book, Waking Up in Winter!
This week I’m excited to share a bit of my next book, Waking Up in Winter: In Search of What Really Matters at Midlife.
This new book is a memoir in journal form where I offer you an inside look at how I live a life dedicated to growth and healing. After writing six self-help books, I answered a midlife call to reevaluate everything –my work, my relationships, my health and more and, in doing so, made the decision to teach by example.
This new form will show you how to use day-to-day experi...

Week 37 – In Remembrance of 9/11
In keeping with a tradition of remembering those souls who lost their lives on September 11th and the families who loved them, I invite you to join me in spending some time today thinking about your life, your loved ones, and your priorities.
Do the people you love know it?
Are you spending your precious time and energy on what matters most to your soul?
Are you being as compassionate and understanding toward others as you could be?
Let’s all keep this in mind…

Week 36 – In Memory of Louise Hay
By now you may have heard the news that Louise Hay passed away quietly in her sleep last week. After more than 90 years on the planet and a legacy that defies gravity, I have no doubt that her spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of the millions of people she touched with her words.
She has certainly left an indelible imprint on my soul.
In honor of Louise, I posted a Facebook Live message last week that you can watch here. If you don’t have access to Facebook, you’ll find the video po...

Week 35 – Finding hope in dire circumstances.
While on vacation I thought I’d share a popular post called “Finding Hope in Dire Circumstances.” I’m sending love to all those in Texas affected by the hurricane. Let’s visualize clear skies and healing for all.
A month ago, Michael and I had thirty trees planted in our yard and as soon as they were in the ground, birds began to build nests. I was so excited to find a robin’s nest in the pine tree behind the garage, an oriole’s nest in the Norway spruce at the bend in the driveway, and a ti...

Week 34 – What if finding your life’s purpose was this simple?
He walks the neighborhood nearly every day wearing a lightweight utility vest and a big toothy smile. The belt loop under his round belly holds unopened garbage bags and he pulls one out when his pockets get full. He picks up cans, paper, and plastic. And he waves at everyone who drives by.
He’s Santa dressed like a handyman, fixing up the neighborhood and spreading good cheer.
In the morning, when I drive to the gym, I approach slowly so I can watch his face light up with each passing car. P...

Week 33 – A letter to an unhappy follower on Facebook
This morning I posted a picture of Poupon coveting the catnip I brought in from the garden. I shared my gratitude for the herb that causes him to leap and spin under its spell. It creates much-needed laughter in our household these days.
Later today I visited my Facebook page and discovered that someone posted a question under the photo, wanting to know if I was indifferent to the violence that happened in Virginia since I hadn’t mentioned it in my post.
Of course I’m not indifferent, I wante...
