June Author Spotlight Series: Chariss K. Walker

Chariss K. Walker, a farmer’s daughter and reared in the Mississippi Delta during the 1960s, lived a sheltered life. Her initial escape was reading. Through books, she traveled and experienced much of what the world had to offer until she could realize her own adventures personally. She won her first writing contest in sixth grade while competing with the entire school. Chariss always knew she was a writer, but busy with family and serving her community, it wasn’t until 2008 when that became a reality with her first published book, Make a Joyful Noise: Searching for a Spiritual Path in a Material World [iUniverse, May, 2008]. This nonfiction book won six awards for inspirational/devotional in 2009 and is available worldwide in paperback and eBook. Although my writing career began with nonfiction books on metaphysical topics, it soon changed to writing about fictional characters with mystical and metaphysical abilities and experiences. These were the things I knew, the ideals I had studied for over thirty years. In The Vision Chronicles series, we meet Mike Lewis first in Kaleidoscope, Book 1. Mike is a successful man on the outside—larger than life both physically and professionally. On the inside, he’s twisted-up about his paranormal ability to see visions of the future through a kaleidoscope. In his dichotomy and human condition, he’s spent so much time self-obsessing that the last fifteen years have passed him by. The Vision Chroniclesseries is about self-acceptance and change. As Mike learns to accept his ability, it changes as seen in the titles of the following books, Spyglass, Window’s Pane, Windows All Around, Open Spaces, Stream of Light, Lamp’s Light, and Clear Glass. The title change is significant because it reveals that Mike ‘sees’ more clearly. Each book covers approximately eight weeks in the chronicles of his transformation as the changes happen quickly once accepted. June Author Spotlight Series: Kristan Cannon

Kristan is a hybrid author with writing credits including novels (most recently After Oil, KCEditions), novellas, numerous short stories as well as two blogs (Kristan's Desk, HER WAY).Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario and educated in North Bay and Toronto, Kristan has been writing original short stories and novellas since the age of thirteen under the pen names Selena Grey and Meredith Hayes.  In 2014 she dropped the pen names in time to release the Special "Anime North" Edition of After Oil and re-launch her writing blog.Kristan is a staunch supporter of literacy, reading and young writer's programs (Member of the Ambassador Program for NaNoWriMo, supporter of a few local and online libraries) and holds a current membership with The Indie Writer's Network.She moved around frequently when she was younger and considers most of Northern Ontario her "home town" as she has lived near Kirkland Lake, and in North Bay, Timmins, Algoma Mills, Elliot Lake and Sudbury before moving to Toronto to finish her education in Business and Commerce while working as an Office Administrator for a construction company (another thing close to her heart as her family background is also primarily in construction and the trades) in Toronto.Still not quite settled, Kristan continues to travel and visits her home towns whenever she can.

June Author Spotlight Series: C.A. King

C.A. King was born and raised in Halton County. She currently resides in Ontario,Canada with her two sons and dog.
After the loss of her loving parents and husband, Ms. King was devastated.She decided to retire from the workforce for a year or two to do some soulsearching. It was during this time that writing became her passion. She found shewas able to redirect her emotions through her writing and in 2014 decided topublish some of her works.
Today her creation, The Portal Prophecies Series comes to life. It was now her personal mission to make the life of her boss a little harder, while experiencing a little fun along the way.

June Author Spotlight Series:Malcolm Torres

 
Malcolm Torres joined the US Navy at the age of 18. He worked as a flight deck crewman and a jet mechanic aboard the USS Enterprise out of Alameda, California. After serving in the Navy, he earned a degree in English Literature from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He has worked in diverse career fields, including auto mechanic, counter clerk in a German Jewish delicatessen, inner-city high school English teacher, project manager for a green energy company and trainer in a microelectronics factory. He is a certified scuba diver, a sailor of small boats, a mountain bike rider and an avid downhill skier.
His writing has appeared in the Colorado Daily Newspaper and High Times Magazine. He is the author of the novel SAILORS TAKE WARNING, a military sci-fi thriller set aboard the USS Nimitz in the near future. He also writes an ongoing series of SEA STORIES that includes THE PIRATE and SIXTY-FOUR DAYS. He is hard at work on SAILOR'S DELIGHT a book about a young deckhand who is left behind in Hawaii when his ship departs for war in the Persian Gulf. Today, Malcolm lives with his family in Portland, Oregon.

June Author Spotlight: Maria Gibbs

I think I was about eight years old when I knew I wanted to be an author. I would tap away on an old typewriter; I was excited beyond belief when I got a new one for a birthday. I devoured books, head continually buried inside. Enid Blyton at that time was the most inspiring of authors as she took me away from my world and placed me into the ones she’d created. (The authors, that inspire me now can be found in the main menu bar.) I wrote whenever I could, at school in break-time and any creative writing tasks in English were my personal Utopia. I even used to read my stories aloud to whoever would listen. I discovered that I too could create worlds to escape to of my own making. That was a powerful discovery, a drug, an addiction to which I have no intention of curing at rehab!Life got in the way as it inevitably does. I have a son who has a learning disability and very complex behavioural needs. For many years, he had to be my main focus. Eventually, I was able to start thinking about writing again, and I threw myself into it with a vengeance.“As Dream Are Made on” is the first short story I have in the public domain, followed up by “A Lifetime or a Season” I do, however, have a number of short stories, novellas and novels in the pipeline at varying stages of completion that I am very excited about. I hope to be able to publish them soon. I hope you will read and enjoy doing as much as I have enjoyed writing them.The actual act of writing is a very solitary experience, but there is nothing more satisfying than when you have poured every part of yourself into your writing, and you are left drained, but euphoric. I will never forget the look on the face of an overly confident, good-looking guy I met on holiday. I was in the middle of a really good writing session, the words were flowing faster than my pen could write, I was desperate to get it all down on paper before it was lost. He interrupted that flow as he sought to engage me with his rather cheesy chat up lines. It was inevitable…I chose my writing over him. What can I say other than the urge to write is strong and I am but a willing slave.

At least, not this early in the evening.” She took a sip of her water and waited for him to talk.“Have you seen Ali tonight?”So that was it. Was he the one who’d upset her? If he were, Katrina had been wrong earlier. Daniel wasn’t the Dom she’d seen Ali eyeing for the last few weeks. “She and Brandon prepped the club tonight.”He nodded and took a drink of his whisky. “Something’s bothering her, but she wouldn’t tell me what. She guessed that answered her question. If Daniel had been the one to upset Ali, he wouldn’t be offering to address the situation with the other party. “No. You don’t. And I think you should let Ali handle it. If she wants your help, she’ll ask for it.”

The bell above the door jingled announcing another customer, and Beth tried to hurry. Getting behind would only make it worse. “Hey, B. You have a visitor,” Tommy yelled.Beth sighed. She hated when he called her that, but telling him did no good whatsoever. Tommy was twenty-three and felt the need to give everyone a nickname. She had to admit B was better than the first nickname he’d come up with for her—Bumble Bee.Cutting the sandwich in half, Beth placed it along with chips and a homemade pickle on a plate and brought it out with her to give to Mr. Keller. “Here you go.”

He smiled back at her and took the sandwich. “Thank you, dear.”Beth wiped her hands on her apron and started toward the counter where Tommy was chatting with someone. When she saw who it was, she grinned.Then Beth noticed the man standing behind Nicole. Drew Parker.No. No, no, no, no. This was not supposed to happen. He wasn’t supposed to be here. He wasn’t supposed to know anything about her life outside the club . . . the lifestyle.The only thing that made her feel a little better was the look on Drew’s face. Sherri spent most of her childhood detesting English class. It was one of her least favorite subjects because she never seemed to fit into the standard mold. She wasn't good at spelling, or following grammar rules, and outlines made her head spin. For that reason, Sherri never imagined becoming an author.

At the age of thirty, all of that changed. After getting frustrated with the direction a television show was taking two of its characters, Sherri decided to try her hand at writing an alternate ending, and give the characters their happily ever after. What's the biggest struggle you've faced as an author and how did you overcome it?
As an author, the first obstacle to overcome was getting that coveted publishing contract. Once I was able to overcome the first (and second . . . let’s not even go there) rejection by a publishing house, I continued to seek a publisher, and was finally rewarded for my persistence. My first publisher was a true learning experience. With them, I learned the ups and downs of writing, what needs to be done and what to avoid. After that publishing relationship was dissolved, I was forced to rethink my dream of being a published author and whether I wanted to go through the inevitable grind of queries and letdowns.  Fortunately, I was signed by another publisher and republished the first three of The Gates Legacy series, and a standalone with the publisher who released my first erotic romance novel, Feather Light. We went through quick re-edits of Hunted and Tormentedwhile full edits of Ascension began. Reckoning, book 4, soon followed and will be my latest release. Can I say it has been easy? Not even! Can I say I would do it all over again? I think I would be lying to myself if I said I wouldn’t do again because at the end of the day, writing is who I am, not what I do. The stories are a part of me and the characters are relentless until I get their voices on paper.Do I have any regrets? Overall, I think my journey has been filled with lessons learned. The reaction and support of my loyal readers outweighs the other negative aspects I had experienced in the past. For me, perseverance and self-motivation is the key to endure the demands and ever-changing nature of the business. The support of my family, friends and peers alike, helped me in the most trying times, and will continue to inspire me as I keep moving forward.
