Isn’t It Wonderful When Things Break?

This is what I am trying to tell myself at the moment as it’s been another crazy week. Even the weather has been crazy; Monday I had to have a hot water bottle in my bed, Wednesday I was sunbathing in a bikini!

Last week my washing machine broke down and so Thursday morning saw me frantically ordering a replacement. After the usual failure to instal from John Lewis (“we’re not plumbers”) this morning an emergency call to my local plumber has it finally now humming in the background and four loads lined up for the next 24 hours. Although it is a nightmare for a Zumba Instructor (or a mum!) when the washing machine breaks down, I now have a super dooper machine that is going to save me drying time, energy, water, detergent, throwing out stained and smelly clothes that my old washer couldn’t handle and is so quiet I keep having to check it’s switched on!

As most of you know (I do like to share in class) the builders have been hacking away next door (any day they’re late or don’t turn up is now a heavenly quiet!) So I’ve been planning my days to get everything urgent done before 9am, or packing my bags so I can work in a cafe. It is amazing how productive I have been because this is exactly the advice most time management experts give you - do your most important tasks first of all, before you get bogged down in emails and vital Facebook conversations! The good news is that if the building work is successful my neighbour’s property might be worth an extra £50K or so, and maybe I’ll add an extra bedroom!

I also reached breaking point with my long distance relationship this week. I really feel sorry for men because they should be told at the beginning of a relationship “anything you say or do can and will be used against you”, because I don’t know about you but I feel I remember EVERYTHING! Anyway anyone who has been taught by me when I’ve become... ahem... “assertive” knows that when I reach my limit I tell you! The good news is that we’ve pulled our relationship socks up and I booked my flight out to see him in less than 2 weeks (taking advantage of the Bank Holiday and May Election class cancellations).

I also had to spend nearly two hours on the phone to Virgin to book my flight as their computers were playing up... I don’t know yet what the upside is but I’m hoping, as I was super patient, that she’s flagged me to be upgraded if there’s any space on the flight!

Anyway, as annoying, stressful and yes, heartbreaking as it can feel when things break or come close to breaking, the truth is that as most of us often just plod along with anything that’s “not too bad” we need sometimes for things to go super horrendously badly in order to make a change, wake up, make decisions, remember what the hell we’re working for in the first place and get our priorities straight.

Zumba Shoe Sale - Two For One

A Rest Is As Good As A Rest

I often think that the old adage “A change is as good as a rest” was designed for workaholics (mea culpa) but taking 4 whole days!!! off this Easter weekend I realised how badly I needed the rest. This is always true when I stop... and when I go for a massage... or a walk in the park... I never take time out and say “Oh I didn’t really need that nap!” But still, I am one of many people who have been working flat out since New Year as if it was normal and productive to work 3 months without any holiday. (And fill my days off with more trainings and work!)

As always I realise that my classes are so quiet around the Easter weekend I could have even taken a few more days off, but I constantly fill myself with the worry of slacking off and losing momentum, so I take the bare minimum.

Anyway as you’ve probably guessed my “Easter Resolution” is to remember that if I want to be refreshed and renewed I have to take the time off to let myself unwind, relax and see the funny side of life. My favourite moment of this weekend was in a luxurious spa when I was feeling a little annoyed at all the people chatting away in the quiet spaces, then, as I was chilling in the outdoor pool a duck landed right next to me. Our luxury spa experience ended with us splashing around the pool trying to chase the duck out!! You couldn’t make it up!

I also realise that so much of the time I am pushing for things to happen - like trying to get my Aqua classes off the ground - only 7 months later to find out that there are issues with the training I did for Level 2 Aqua so I may not actually be certified! In fact it may have caused serious problems for me if I had been teaching with the temporary certificate! Another case where having tolerance and patience can be way more important than always rushing, pushing and stressing. (Ah the wisdom of a Bank Holiday Weekend!) I must remember to trust the universe more!

Zumba Education Specialist Annual Meeting

As a lot of you know last Thursday I was stressing out about booking my convention pass the very second registration opened, as a lot of sessions get booked up and you never know until you register what is going to be popular, and there’s always the worry that the whole thing will sell out! I also had to go up to the hospital for an annual check up, so ended up booking it with my credit card sitting in the waiting room with everyone staring at me (what a desperate shopper!) (I got all my top picks and apparently 4,000 instructors registered on the first day! There r around 7-8,000 spaces in total for Convention!)

Convention is the most incredible time for me for so many reasons. It’s so much more than just training. It’s where I go to be inspired by the very best in the world, where I go to figure out the kinks in my “game” and it’s where I go to put down my Instructor hat and pick up the Participant hat so that I understand how it feels when you’re at the back of the class getting squashed and I keep saying move forward and you’re like “how am I supposed to move forward when they won’t!” Yes, I need to be reminded!! It’s the inspiration and passion that helps me through the difficult times and the burning out times and push through the doubt when I don’t know what the next step is.

I know that two years ago when I got to go for the very first time I was dragging, and I came back, invigorated, inspired and although I’d love to say everything was wonderful, the truth is that the year after that was in some ways my hardest year so far. So I honestly don’t know if I would have made it through without having Convention 2013 “in my tank”.

Anyway this video from Zumba co-creator Beto Perez shows the ZES meeting (these are our teachers) and as much as I am jealous they only get 3 days together - we do get 4-5 days for Convention! This is the team that works so hard to create our experience at Convention.

If I wasn’t super excited already, seeing the ZES who I learned so much from in previous years makes me remember how far I’ve come and seeing those who I’ve signed up to learn from (check out South African ZES Lucas at 8:34 with my previous African teacher Ricardo who came up with your favourite Bouje choreo!) means I just cannot wait!!

Just Merton Column and Advert

It was so exciting to come back on Tuesday and see my very first column in the new local Just Merton magazine! There is also an advert with a Free First Class for Vestry Hall classes - so make sure you tell any friends who have been meaning to come and give it a go!

The team at Just Merton did a fantastic job as it looks even better than the first edition so I really hope this magazine gets more and more successful!!

Casting Call

Yes I have been contacted again by a casting agent! I’ve arranged a meet n greet in between the two Tuesday evening classes at Vestry Hall on 7th April where you can meet the agents and do a little talk to camera if you are interested.

THERE WILL BE NO FILMING OR PHOTOGRAPHS DURING CLASSES!!

Please note this opportunity is for class members only - if you are doing another class with me during the week you are welcome to come along, but please do not bring guests unless they are prepared to do the class!

Details: “We are currently working on an online commercial for a fitness app which will be sponsoring a major charity event and think this is more up your street.

We are looking for 5 women to appear in the commercial, between the ages of
18 and 60.

They are real women, with jobs, families, social life. They go to the gym
once or twice a week / they do Zumba or a dance class / they jog or
power-walk / do yoga or play tennis. They are not super athletic or
extremely fit - they do as much as they can when they can to keep active
and in good shape.

The shoot will take place on *22nd April in London* (we would need our
chosen cast to be available for the entire day).

The commercial will be shot in a documentary style - we see our women
talking about their life and their experiences and we see them exercising.

This is a paid opportunity - each of the selected women will be paid £200
for 1 shoot day + £500 buyout (the commercial will be shown on the
company's website for 1 year).”

Pearl again: The £500 buyout fee will only apply if the company uses you for the final campaign. I am also asking for 10% of the final fee to make organising this and future casting calls worthwhile for me!

As you know I am all about showing real people in fitness advertising so I would love to see lots of you there on Tuesday night!!!

Please note I am on holiday from Friday to Monday, so if you have questions please text or call today or Tuesday - thanks!

April Fool - Zumba For Dogs!

Two Months On From This…

Find me on Facebook
Follow me on Twitter

Hi guys,

I’m Not Happy and I’m Ashamed

So it’s a little bit more than 2 months (exactly 2 months ago I was a bit under the weather!)

I’m still making progress, the credit card shuffle continues and I’ve now saved £2,819 a year (and onwards - some of the 0% balance transfers are 18 months!)

My parking space is proving to be a hot commodity and I’ve made £110 so far!

I went back (third time lucky) to BT and haggled and got an even better deal - but I still need to make sure they’re sticking to their word - their contract confirmation handily omits pricing, sigh!

But this credit card shuffle (and overdraft, of course) is befuddling. I paid off a bit of one credit card then waited for a balance transfer offer... nothing, then just checking on my statement online I noticed a 6.9% life of balance offer - hoorah and snapped it up. Paid off some more, went back, nothing...

Credit card offers seem to be very erratic, for example I have two cards from the same company (they weren’t the same company when I got them), and I’ve been paying off one steadily with the higher rate of interest. Then I got a call about a problem with a transaction. Called them back from my sick bed. Apparently they’d added a cash transfer fee to a charity payment and needed to refund me. (This is on the second card - with the lower rate of interest.) (Note to anyone - you can refund me, pay me, send me cash anytime without calling to check I want the money. Yes please!) Then they said, “Oh we have a one time only offer on your card (the first card, the one with the higher rate of interest) if you’d like to do a 0% balance transfer with a 5% fee today. Just for today! Now, now, now, now! Normally I’d be champing at the bit, but the only card I could transfer to is one with a 6.9% life of balance offer, so it’s not the best deal, plus I was struggling to get my head off the pillow, so I politely declined. “I have to go back to sleep now”. “Okay, well if you change your mind just call us back today...”

Then a few days later I got a letter from the second credit card (the one from the same company with a lower rate of interest) saying that in three months they are putting up my interest rate (to make it more in line with what their new customers are paying). If I want to keep my interest rate the same I have to write to them and then they’ll freeze the card and I can’t use it anymore.

Is it any wonder that we get confused with our credit cards? I also just wrote to another credit card company who seem to be paying off my lower rate balance transfer offer balances before the higher interest amounts. You got to keep these guys honest.

Anyway I’ve decided that the best way to deal with it all is just to play one move at a time as there is no way to know what these companies will offer (or rescind) next. Who knows maybe after a couple of days of feeling better I’ll come up with a Grand Slam move that will sort out both of those credit cards... I may have a cunning plan...

Much love, Pearl x

Achievements

I love writing the Congratulations bit of this email because it is wonderful to celebrate your achievements. This week someone mentioned that she was excited to complete her card but then realised the lady next to her had done way more classes and it kind of took the shine off.

Over the past couple of weeks it keeps coming up for me that so often we compare ourselves to others, but we have to remember that we are hardly ever actually competing with others - even when we are getting sexy or running in “Fireball” it’s not real competition. If one “team” does well then it doesn’t mean they go home with a gold medal, but hopefully by “competing” we encourage each other to do better.

Yes, it’s great to be the guy that broke the three minute mile for the first time, but once he did it it became psychologically easier for others to break that limit.

At the moment my Facebook life is full of talk about Zumba Convention and I can’t wait to go again and I’m excited to be choosing new sessions, but I’m also a little bit jealous of the newbies who are coming for the first time this year - who will have that incredible excitement, and anxiety, sure, but most of all wonder when they walk in for the very first time.

We are all on our own journeys and whether you are celebrating finishing your first class, fifth, fifteenth, hundredth or five hundredth it’s important to remember that other people may have had their experience but this is yours, your moment to enjoy and embrace, because it won’t come round for you for the first time ever again!

Pearl Escapes Photography Launch - Love Made Visible

Find me on Facebook
Follow me on Twitter

Hi guys,

So, I have two projects in my head at the moment where, whichever way I turn I feel like I am constantly being prodded (maybe inspired is a better word!) in a particular direction. One is REALLY wild, and I’m still figuring it out, but the other is ready to share and that’s me launching a photography side of Pearl Escapes.

Most of you know that this year I have been focused on sorting out my finances and I’ve made huge steps already, but I know that to really deal with my credit card debts I need to actually make more money. So, I’ve been very open to any opportunities that pop up.

Then a casting agency called me offering BIG money, to help them find “real” people for a photo shoot. Hmmm...

Then a friend emailed me because she’d been looking for photos online of Zumba Gold and had come across some wonderful pictures of my classes - could she use them to advertise her classes? Of course, I was very flattered!

Then I got one of those “get rich quick” emails about making vast amounts of money from posting your photos online.

Then I went to a local cafe and was asked, completely randomly, to enter a local photography competition.

I realised just how much I love connecting with people through Instagram, allowing a photo to say those thousand words I would otherwise have to use!

Okay, at this point, I had to accept that the universe was definitely pointing me in the direction of photography, but...

Before I became a Zumba Instructor I spent about 20 years working in film and other types of production. I’ve shot my own short films and was even the cameraman (cameraperson) for my own micro budget feature film. Much as I loved it, shooting other people dancing with an extremely heavy camera on your shoulder is so not as much fun as being in a Zumba class (I mean what is!) Not to mention the weeks spent editing.

I studied film photography, read everything the geniuses of cinema had to offer, and it’s as freeing as when Wally Diaz tells you “there is no pure rhythm” - and then you have to try and sell what you shot and I feel like I’ve been put back in the box again!

When I look around for the kind of pictures and ways of working recommended to “make lots of money with stock photos” it bores me to tears. I am filled with the kind of depression that I get when I look at freelance writing jobs (yes, I’m looking at all kinds of possibilities) that are the definition of soul destroying.

I guess I’m also scared of hiding or getting stuck behind the camera again. I have to remind myself to put the camera down in a lot of situations!

I did a little meditation on what I should be doing, where I should be going and I got this answer “Adventure” and a strong sense that the rest would be revealed along the way. Well, say the word “adventure” and I’m yours.

I believe it is possible to find and do what you love and make money, especially if you refuse to accept the status quo and follow your heart. I could have taught Zumba in gyms, but being out and about in the community I’ve had the privilege to start Zumba Gold, Zumba Gold “chair classes” as well as Kids classes. Now I’m looking for a pool for Aqua Zumba and banging my head against a brick wall I appreciate the freedom that Zumba gives us instructors to set up classes anywhere and everywhere.

So, the most important thing in approaching photography is not to give up my freedom - to shoot what I want, when I want and not restrict myself to just stock photos - to play with it.

I also know what I don’t want to do - no weddings for me please - I’ve filmed weddings, it’s a killer.

In trying to figure out exactly what I do want to do I Googled photography quotes and hit gold - “A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people.” Annie Leibovitz.

That’s it, of course. I already have so many subjects I want to shoot because I look at you guys, the people in my class all day, I see how beautiful you look, when you laugh, when you try, with or without make up, when you sweat, when you concentrate, and these are the pictures, already in my head, that I want to see in the world, that casting agencies, businesses, other instructors, other gyms want to see, because you are G O R G E O U S even when you tell me you’re not.

So that’s it (or the big part of it) - shooting you. Putting down my instructor hat for an hour or so and picking up my artist/photographer hit to try to capture the glory in front of me every day. It’s so obvious, right?

The same goes for taking pictures of nature, my escapes, it’s about using the eye I already have but allowing myself to play with it, to make something out of nothing, like hearing a song on the radio in the car and making a routine out of it. Gosh, it’s fun!

What does that mean for you guys? Well I’ll be doing some open photo shoots soon - keep your eyes peeled on my newsletter - and hoping to do them regularly. I want pictures of EVERYONE! Please don’t expect to make a lot of money - for all the claims online most stock photos are bought for a couple of pounds - but you never know - I’ll also be sending links to those casting agencies offering big bucks. One thing I do know is that you have to be in it to win it!

Here are some of the other quotes from Annie Leibovitz that inspired me this weekend (but I also read some articles about her financial troubles so, it just goes to show, even the most successful people in the world need to watch the pennies too!)

“I didn't want to let women down. One of the stereotypes I see breaking is the idea of ageing and older women not being beautiful.” Annie Leibovitz

“As a young person, and I know it's hard to believe that I was shy, but you could take your camera, and it would take you to places: it was like having a friend, like having someone to go out with and look at the world. I would do things with a camera I wouldn't do normally if I was just by myself.” Annie Leibovitz

“There are still so many places on our planet that remain unexplored. I’d love to one day peel back the mystery and understand them.” – Annie Leibovitz

“You don’t have to sort of enhance reality. There is nothing stranger than truth.” – Annie Leibovitz (Yup!)

“When I take a picture I take 10 percent of what I see.” – Annie Leibovitz (Great, it’s not just me that gets frustrated that I can’t put everything in the frame!)

“I'm more interested in being good than being famous.” Annie Leibovitz (Actually I’m more interested in paying off the credit card bills!)

My favourite photo of this weekend, it reminds me of manatees:-

A good thing to know about Zumba Toning is that you can do this class without weights too, either for safety or health reasons, or practical reasons (i.e. you haven’t got them!)

Why I Need To Escape

Find me on Facebook
Follow me on Twitter

Hi guys,

I need to escape every so often for that wonderful moment either in the midst of the action or sitting down to relax when it's all over when I feel an immense sense of gratitude. Gratitude for just wonderful it all is.

I'm sitting on a bench in a park writing this and a toddler has just gone past and gone into raptures over "flowers, flowers, flowers", as if the first purple flowers of spring were a miracle. Which, of course, they are.

Sometimes the miracle is an escape that goes horribly wrong; it rains, the bus or train is cancelled; I get crushed in a shopping centre or freeze in the open air – and then the miracle becomes a hot bath, a hot cup of tea, a nice movie on the TV – all the things I would otherwise take for granted.

Last night I walked back from Richmond Park having been blessed with a whole herd of deer wandering into the spot where I was standing. One minute I was on deer safari hoping for a single glimpse of a pair of antlers, the next I was watching two dozen does and stags fluttering through the grassland. As the sun set I felt blessed again with the gorgeous view and tickled to see scores of other people watching the sun go down. An ordinary, everyday blessing which we are so much more grateful for when we have a hot coffee or cold beer in our hands.

I need to escape from the trick that I play on myself when I think that life is getting the laundry done or paying the bills or cooking, shopping, planning… anything other than the moments when I am truly glad to be alive. Of course these are part of life, but most of this stuff can honestly wait on a sunny day, most of this stuff will be forgotten. The problem is that I (and probably most of the world) decide some arbitrary work schedule in my head so that it makes sense to spend the whole of Sunday cleaning or doing DIY or any one of a number of dull thankless tasks because we've forgotten that this is not what we were put on this earth to do.

Our value is not in the work that we do, whether it's cleaning or writing a novel, our worth is not in what we do for others, I don't think it's even in education or workshops or going to the gym, because I believe we are all created equal. What does that mean? That means that I believe the person who spends all their day lying on the beach is as loved and blessed by the universe as the hard working carer who spends all of their time looking after a disabled relative. There is no us and them, no haves and have nots, no somebodies and nobodies. We are all children of the same universe, no matter how gifted, hardworking, lazy, unpleasant or misguided we may be. We are all given equally, the sun sets for all of us, whether we are minimum wage slaves (I'm self-employed; I make less than that!) benefits slackers or titans of industry. There are just as many free, beautiful places to watch that sunset as there are rooftop gardens (probably more). Our differences lie in whether or not we open our hearts to all that the universe has to offer, it lies in being aware that when we choose to spend the day working on the plumbing we are ignoring that bounty out there that the universe has laid at our feet.

I find myself thinking in terms of the parental. I remember spending ages finding the perfect gift for my mum on Mother's Day (carefully hunted at the school jumble sale – remember them) only to have a nod and "that's nice, dear" and my trophy shoved in a drawer forever. Children are just as bad, they discard the present and play with the box, right?

Ingratitude is naïve at best. At its worst it cuts the giver to the core.

There are so many wonders of this world laid out for us, and most of us ignore them, even when we say "I would love to…", "If I win the lottery…", "When I have time." "When I find the right person to go with." and we spend our lives making whatever we do in order to live more important than living. We're too busy playing with the box to play with the gift.

We need to stop overprogramming our lives. I NEED TO STOP OVERPROGRAMMING MY LIFE. And I need to create the space around me that is needed to allow life in, allow love in and most of all to allow gratitude to ring from me.

And now it is cold, the park bench is freezing and it's time to go home for a nice cup of tea.

Much love, Pearl x

Believe 2015

This is a fantastic event that I went to last year and is very special in that EVERYONE is invited, whereas most of the master classes I have attended with Beto Perez (the creator of Zumba) are Instructor only. More than that, despite attending Convention, Instructor Academy in Cologne in 2014 (and many other events in previous years) this was by far the best and most intimate class I’ve experienced with the master of Zumba! I will not be missing it!

Tickets are normally £35 online and £40 on the door, however until 1st April I can use double and group ticket bookings to get a cheaper price so if you would like to book a ticket through me it will be £30 up to Saturday 28th March. You can pay cash in class or also send to me via Paypal pearl@pearlescapes.co.uk If you prefer you can also book direct through Maloca - website and all details below, and if you fancy making a weekend of it you can use the hotel codes to get a discounted 2 night stay at the hotel!

Ages - 18 and up!

Want Real People In Advertising? Now's Your Chance To Represent And Earn A Big Fat Fee!

I’ve just been contacted by a casting agent looking for real people (it doesn’t get much realler than our classes!) for a utility company photographic shoot. I’m trying to figure out the logistics but would love to get some of you out there in advertising because you’re all so gorgeous... and also there’s a big fat fee involved! (Didn’t I just mention about hitting walls and then good things coming along!)

Well the agency recommend I take a 10% fee for sorting it out, and it would definitely be worth my while as the fee per adult is £2,000! They are also looking for children (£1,000 fee). They are particularly looking for older adults and older couples (which is why they came to me!)

If you are keen send me a text on 07770 846 284 and I’ll let you know as soon as I have anything organised.

Uptown Funk

I love how we set the trends in our Zumba Gold classes. This is our new warm up track (well, the original) in many of my Zumba Gold classes - and then someone sent me this without even knowing it - love it!

Zumba with Bursts® Lunchtime Classes

When I first started teaching at Wimbledon Park Hall there was a lot of interest in lunchtime/day time classes but I couldn’t make it work with the availability, however there will be more time available in the hall from mid March, so... who would like a high intensity class 30 minute lunchtime class - Zumba with Bursts® ?

Times would be 1:30-2pm or later on Wednesday or Thursday at Wimbledon Park Hall, running for school term times only, so from the second week in April.

I am also thinking of running this as a six week booking so I would love to know your thoughts - text, email or call me to let me know! 07770 846 284 or pearl@pearlescapes.co.uk
