Next week - all classes running as normal

And To All A Good Night!

So into the last week of classes for this year! It’s been an absolutely incredibly year, not just one but two Zumbathons! starting new classes at Wimbledon Park Hall (which have already grown from 4 to 6 in January), seeing the opening of the new Dementia Hub in Mitcham and teaching Zumba Gold chair classes.... and so much more.

But, as always, the highlights are the regular classes each week, getting to know you all and see you improve so much and reach your fitness goals.

I started this year thinking about expanding and maybe changing my role in Zumba but very quickly I remembered that I already have the very best job in the world teaching you guys.

But it does get tougher in December - as I say, every class in December is worth two in January because keeping it going is much more difficult when there is so much to do, so many mince pies to eat, parties to go to and presents to wrap. Which is why I love my Christmas break, when I get to put my feet up in some fluffy slippers and relax, and yes, miss you guys, so that when January arrives (as it always does) I will be raring to go (as I hope you will be too!) and bring you heaps more energy, excitement and brand new tunes and moves!

Have a wonderful Christmas if I don’t see you in the next week and let’s rock this New Year!

Christmas reminders!!

This December everyone who comes to class will get one First Class Free gift card to give to a friend! You can also buy Gift Cards for classes which come with a greetings card and have the added advantage that you can buy as many as you like - they cost the price of the class plus £1 for the card!

This year instead of our usual Tuesday night Christmas party we’re having TWO CHRISTMAS PARTIES, which will both be more relaxed with games and competitions spread out through the evening. Tickets are £10 and you get a Christmas present too!! Please do book as it really helps me to organise presents. prizes and refreshments!

You can arrive whenever you like and leave - you don’t have to stay for the whole time - just remember to take it easy when you come in or if you have to leave early to allow your body to warm up and cool down - so important at this time of year!

Tuesday 16th December - Christmas party - Vestry Hall - 6-8:15pm

Thursday 18th December - Christmas party and LAST CLASS of 2014 - Wimbledon Park Hall - 7:15-9:15pm

We will also have a little celebration in Arthur’s cafe after each of our lunchtime Zumba Gold classes on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th! Phew!!

Classes start again on Saturday 3rd January when I will hopefully be bringing my boyfriend (&%^!!) to try his very first Zumba Fitness class - so why don’t you use it as an excuse to bring your boyfriend or husband to give it a go!!

Congratulations!

The Ultimate Guide To Staying In Bed (Or Toughing It Out)

I was very proud of my track record since starting Zumba – in almost five years I had never caught a cold or had a chest infection while teaching (it was only when I took a break that I got sick!)

But, since September, one nasty stomach bug and a lot of extra events and training and my immune system is not as robust as it has been. I had a little sinusitis and cough before I went on holiday and then last week I got a… (drum roll, please) cold.

At least I think it's a cold, it may be sinusitis, or any other kind of ugly bug that's going around. Even if it is "just a cold", which one is it? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 200 different viruses can cause the "characteristic runny nose, cough, sore throat, and sneezing most people experience at least once per year". (If it's not something bacterial?!)

In the past I've always worked through any little bug that's come my way and nothing has managed to take hold while I've been teaching but this one has given me a lot more pause for thought and, as I promised my classes, led me to investigate more about when we should exercise through cold and flu symptoms and when we should lay low.

The generally accepted rule of thumb is the "neck check": If symptoms are above the neck i.e. runny nose, sneezing, etc. then exercise can help and even reduce your illness.

Below the neck - widespread muscle aches or fatigue, nausea or a nasty cough and the general view is that you would be better off resting up until your symptoms die down.

Personally I find this tricky as every little sinus thing goes straight to my chest, (as I have a weaker right lung) and exercise is the only thing that keeps my lungs clear every day. (Before I started Zumba I was plagued with chest infections and commuting into central London didn't help!) So I choose to ignore that advice, knowing my own body and limits.

Even before you start to feel under the weather, advice on exercising is vague: "a moderate level of exercise may help prevent upper respiratory infections" whereas "intense levels of exercise may suppress the immune system and make individuals more prone to colds and other respiratory infections". But of course one person's "moderate" is another's "intense".

There's also evidence that how you feel about your class can also have an impact: "just listening to 50 minutes of dance music and participants had less cortisol and more cold-fighting antibodies - a sure boost to their immune systems."

Not to mention the other benefits of exercise: "Regular exercise, accompanied by a good night’s sleep, can be a powerful boost to your immune system. Not only does the act of exercising itself help white blood cells, which fight disease, travel more quickly through your body, but it also affects the hormones that control your sleep cycles. So exercise indirectly helps you sleep more deeply, allowing your immune system to repair itself more effectively."

Running and other exercise also acts as a natural decongestant.

So, basically all the research boils down to… it depends on how you feel.

There are a few tips that I would take very seriously when it comes to exercising when you feel under the weather:-

1. Be cautious about exercising if you have a fever, and, as always, stay well hydrated.

2. If you are exhausted take a nap before you take a class. If you aren’t sleeping well then perhaps a class is a good idea, but if you're already exhausted rest first.

3. Have you had your 5 portions of fruit and veg for the day? If you are not eating well and supporting your immune system then you could find your class more draining than helpful.

4. Take it easy when returning after a bug – "viral infections like the flu can weaken the heart, leaving it susceptible to damage by strenuous exercise. Stop if you feel exhausted or have difficulty breathing. Be especially careful if you start to develop tightness and coughing in your chest."

5. Make sure you replenish everything; fluids, food and sleep as soon as you can after a class AND I find hitting a really hot steamy shower works wonders straight after a class – sitting around in damp, sweaty clothes doesn't make anybody feel good at any time!

And of course the other major concern whether you're coming to a class or teaching is passing on the infection. As I teach a lot of older people and have family with reduced immune systems it's something I sweat about. But with most bugs being contagious from a few days before you have symptoms to up to a week afterwards it is basically impossible to avoid each other during infectious periods (those sneaky little bugs make it tricky!)

When you are sneezing or coughing you can take basic hygiene precautions; cough or blow your nose into a tissue, use hand gel and don't hug and kiss everyone! And remember, Zumba Fitness is not a contact sport – even during salsa!

As a teacher I find it very hard to decide whether to teach, knowing that helping people to keep active can boost their immune systems and mean they have a better chance of avoiding all the bugs in circulation at this time of year, not to mention all the other benefits of regular exercise. I guess overall I take the long view that, with 80% of serious illnesses and mortality in this country being related to inactivity, it is still better to err on the side of over-doing it than under-doing it!

Happy Thanksgiving

One of the things I’ve been thinking about lately is how often I am running around like a headless chicken, feeling like I am spinning plates, trying to keep everything up in the air - and then it strikes me - I have plates!!! So many times I think we are so busy trying to be the best parent ever, or the best instructor, or daughter, or friend that we sometimes forget just how blessed and lucky we are to already be a parent, instructor, daughter or friend. So I love the idea of having a day where we remember what we are thankful for!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Thank YOU!!!

Huge thanks to everyone who turned out or donated last Saturday to support Mind - the mental health charity - we raised nearly £300 for the charity - so once again well done!!!

And one more thing... as a purveyor of fitness classes I should probably be now telling you that you’ll desperately need to work on that bikini body in January. I say Bah Humbug!!! The average person puts on only 1 pound over Christmas and New Year, so relax, enjoy and come back in January with a smile on your face and ready for some great new tracks!!

January Timetable Changes No. 2

I am adding a new class for January!! The very first Zumba Gold chair class at Wimbledon Park Hall. This will be a 45 minute class on Monday 1-1:45pm so please do spread the word. Sorry

I’m so sorry that some of you were inconvenienced when the guest instructor didn’t show up for class. Sadly when you trust people there is always the possibility that they will let you down. Lauretta has advised me that she got the weeks mixed up in her diary, which is my worst nightmare, but I know that she meant well and also did turn up in person to teach the classes on Wednesday 12th and apologise in person.

It’s funny because before this I was thinking (as I had the chance to catch up on some current affairs while away - i.e. read glossy magazines!) about the whole naked selfie scandal, when photos taken and sent to loved ones were somehow restored and pilfered from the internet and shared with the whole world. Perhaps the most shocking thing is how certain media blamed the women who had taken these photos and sent them to their partners, when it seems abundantly clear to me that the only people who should feel ashamed are the perpetrators and voyeurs taking advantage of the situation.

In the legend Lady Godiva is the hero and Peeping Tom the villain.

Compare it to the shock and blame heaped on tabloid newspapers who hacked into phones and stole conversations they had no right to hear.

I feel that no one should be embarrassed and ashamed unless they actively set out to do something malicious (in many cases this is how the courts see it too), if someone takes advantage or lets us down it’s not our fault.

In a way the mistake that Lauretta made was the best case scenario - it was an honest mistake (and we all make them). I’m not sorry I trusted her and took a break because I had an amazing time and have come back feeling rested and passionate about my classes, which I think will benefit my classes in the long run.

If we take no risks in life, there is no adventure, no thrill. Man, that would be pretty dull, right.

But... I want to make it up to you! Normally I would give every person who had paid and booked not only the original class you had paid for, but another free class as an apology, but as a very special gesture instead of a free class I am going to give you a FREE Pearl Escapes bag, Zumba T-shirt or other goodie from my bag of tricks! And just hope that’s enough to make it up to you!

November News

Well... so much going on in November!

For starters I am off on holiday from 5th to 12th November - as you can probably tell from the timetable above! You can continue to book classes with me (until I go!) and then my lovely guest instructors will book spaces for classes when I return.

When I get back I am going to be starting a 4 week trial of chair classes for the Dementia Hub in Mitcham on Tuesdays 10:30 -11:10 - for dementia sufferers and their carers - if anyone is interested please do let me know!

Then we have a Zumbathon Event 5:30 - 7pm on Saturday 22nd November, with the added bonus of a Zumba Wear Shop at Vestry Hall from 1:30 - 3pm. Kerry does a fantastic job of ordering in sale items so if you have been hankering after anything in particular please do send me your order - item (specific or general), size and colour if you have a preference before 4th November!!

We were originally going to run a ZIN Jam for instructors however this has not worked out! So instead I am going to be running the very first of my new workshops - “One Step At A Time” - this is a workshop, not a workout so should be gentler than any of my classes, and is going to be restricted to a maximum of 10 students, so if you are interested PLEASE book early! 3-5pm Vestry Hall and the cost is £16.

As A Rule - Picking Hotels and other Important Life Decisions

Find me on Facebook
Follow me on Twitter

Hi guys,

So I’m trying to pick a hotel for a holiday (with someone else which makes it even trickier!) and we’re discussing what’s important in a hotel room - location, price, as well as the things that make me cross off even the most promising places - stories of bugs on Tripadvisor and shared bathrooms.

But as I was reviewing my deal breakers I remembered two amazing hotels I stayed in which broke these rules. One was a gorgeous Edinburgh townhouse hotel with a massive shared bathroom on the top floor (so we basically had it to ourselves!) the other was the wonderful Yangshuo Mountain Retreat which had some unrecognisable wriggly things in the bathroom, although they did warn us before we arrived: “We are in the countryside, there will be bugs.”

Both of these places (especially Yangshuo Mountain Retreat) have a special place in my heart - even though I never actually had enough time in the Edinburgh hotel for a long soak in the roll top bath and I was desperate to get to the top floor of a high tech Shanghai hotel with no bugs.

It’s the same with dating. Whether you’re looking for hotels or dates online it’s easy to use the filters to knock out those rated low by others (hotels), smokers (dates), smoking rooms (hotels), distance (both), age (dates), price (hotels - although there are some dating sites...) in fact all the things we think are important.

I read a wonderful chapter in a new book I bought by Thich Nhat Hanh which sums this up beautifully. In finding true joy, “you realise that all the things you have considered to be conditions for your happiness are nothing. They may even be obstacles for your own happiness, and you can get rid of them without regret. We are all looking for the conditions for our own happiness, and we know what things have made us suffer. But we have not yet seen or touched the treasure of happiness. When we touch it, even once, we know that we have the capacity of letting go of everything else.”

Sometimes we can be seduced by the picture of a four poster bed and arrive to find that the mattress is painfully uncomfortable (hotel), or that our date is deeply uncomfortable that he is a foot shorter than us (date), but these are just analogies.

We are all pursuing things that we believe will make us happy, whether that is directly or perhaps through others; making our children or parents happy will make us happy, volunteering for the community will make us happy, but every so often we need to stop and look around and question the conditions we have set ourselves for happiness.

Do we really need everything we think we need to be happy? Do the things we believe will make us unhappy really ruin our day? Or is running around trying to fulfil all our conditions of happiness really creating more suffering in our lives?

Can we allow enough space in our lives to let in joy when we do find it? I find myself guilty of this most days; the sun is shining and I want the joy of sitting in a park in the sunshine, and yet I find so many “important” things to do that I am lucky if I get five minutes in the sun.

Or it takes me so long to pack a bag for the beach and it is so heavy that I barely make it onto the beach.

My conditions for happiness actually delay or negate my happiness. It’s like the phrase I hear from many people “I’ll come to Zumba class when I am fitter.” When, to be happier, all we need to do is to start now, not wait to be happier.

So next time I find myself thinking “conditionally” I will challenge that condition I have set for myself, open my mind, heart and spirit to joy and just... be happy. (Even if there are bugs.)

Much love, Pearl x

Tapas Night - Social Thursday 23rd October

Don’t forget tonight is our social night (as our classes at Wimbledon Park Hall are cancelled due to the residents’ AGM) at Estella Tapas Bar in Wimbledon Park. Am booking tables for 7pm - feel free to come a little earlier or later as we are very relaxed there!

Carpe Diem

It was so sad earlier this year to hear that Robin Williams had passed away, and in the outpouring of tributes it was amazing to appreciate just how much he contributed in his life, in TV, comedy, films and even fundraising for so many charities. The quote that really caught me at the time was a friend who said “he could make everybody happy, except himself”.

To honour him we will be holding a Memorial Zumbathon on Saturday 22nd November (time to be confirmed - approx. 5pm) at Vestry Hall in Mitcham, with a special movie theme and in aid of Mind - the mental health charity.

I already have 7 guest instructors lined up to make a truly awesome evening. Tickets are £10 and I am working on also having a ZumbaWear sale shop on site. You can dress to impress or just wear your regular gear, and take your inspiration from any film or one of Robin Williams’ films.

If you don’t recognise the quote “carpe diem” it’s from “Dead Poets Society” one of Robin Williams’ most famous films. It means “seize the day” - live life now. To that end I am also taking a little holiday from Weds 5th - 12th Nov because one of my resolutions this year was to take more time off and spend time with friends and family. My classes will be covered by more wonderful guest instructors, details to come in the next newsletter!

Congratulations!

Forget Perfect

I was thinking this week, while puffing like a steam train as I cycled up a hill, "why is it so hard?" Surely by now I should be sailing effortlessly along? The same goes for balancing the books, teaching classes and, well, just life.

And then I realised that the problem is not the effort but the ridiculous image we have of the perfect person - the instructor who doesn't have a hair out of place, the mum who never gets tired of looking after the kids, the cool, calm and collected business person for whom everything runs smoothly.

But if we are honestly doing our best then we put all our effort in, use all our budget, all the time and energy we have (and a little bit we don't) on being the best parent or relative or friend or dancer we can be. As I say in class, it's the point where we feel the stretch that's where we need to be to get stronger and more flexible. It's being challenged that helps us to grow.

I was reminded of this watching Strictly Come Dancing: How do the dancers look when they come off the floor? They look breathless, glowing and happy. If you saw it last week, I loved Mark Wright's Superman pasodoble - crazy, wild, all of the energy into the dramatic and very little left for technique - the crowd went wild and one of the judges gave it a 9.

Work/life balance is not always smooth, it can also sometimes be like the yin yang symbol, or like nature which seems to bring things into balance by extremes. Like day and night, winter and summer, high and low tide.

One of my favourite instructors often says about putting together a playlist that we must have different kinds of tempos, emotions, intensities because otherwise, if it's all the same, we simply create a flatline - which is death.

So don't be afraid of the stretch, of the sweat, of the moment when you're not sure you can make it through class because, as another great teacher says these are just growth opportunities, but remember in order to make the work effective we also need to allow ourselves to recover, to release and to rest.

I'm off to the park - see u tomorrow x
