Forget Perfect
I was thinking this week, while puffing like a steam train as I cycled up a hill, "why is it so hard?" Surely by now I should be sailing effortlessly along? The same goes for balancing the books, teaching classes and, well, just life.
And then I realised that the problem is not the effort but the ridiculous image we have of the perfect person - the instructor who doesn't have a hair out of place, the mum who never gets tired of looking after the kids, the cool, calm and collected business person for whom everything runs smoothly.
But if we are honestly doing our best then we put all our effort in, use all our budget, all the time and energy we have (and a little bit we don't) on being the best parent or relative or friend or dancer we can be. As I say in class, it's the point where we feel the stretch that's where we need to be to get stronger and more flexible. It's being challenged that helps us to grow.
I was reminded of this watching Strictly Come Dancing: How do the dancers look when they come off the floor? They look breathless, glowing and happy. If you saw it last week, I loved Mark Wright's Superman pasodoble - crazy, wild, all of the energy into the dramatic and very little left for technique - the crowd went wild and one of the judges gave it a 9.
Work/life balance is not always smooth, it can also sometimes be like the yin yang symbol, or like nature which seems to bring things into balance by extremes. Like day and night, winter and summer, high and low tide.
One of my favourite instructors often says about putting together a playlist that we must have different kinds of tempos, emotions, intensities because otherwise, if it's all the same, we simply create a flatline - which is death.
So don't be afraid of the stretch, of the sweat, of the moment when you're not sure you can make it through class because, as another great teacher says these are just growth opportunities, but remember in order to make the work effective we also need to allow ourselves to recover, to release and to rest.
I'm off to the park - see u tomorrow x
Tapas Night - Social Thursday 23rd October
By popular request I have organised a social night (as our classes at Wimbledon Park Hall on Thursday 23rd October are cancelled due to the residents’ AGM) at Estella Tapas Bar in Wimbledon Park. Am booking tables for 7pm so please let me know if you would like to come along and feel free to come a little earlier or later as we are very relaxed there!
(We may even do a little salsa downstairs if the mood takes us!)
Congratulations!
