Aqua Zumba

Yes, I now have a proud little blue A on my zumba.com profile as a brand new Aqua Zumba Instructor.

It’s a bit like passing your driving test - you can drive but still have to get some experience (and insurance and a car...)

I absolutely fell in love with Aqua Zumba during my training and I think it’s one of the most exciting specialties, not only because I love the water and places where you can swim (the pool, the beach, the spa) but because there are so many added benefits to being in the water. Plus, the water can support people, so anyone worried about joint problems or falling can relax and have even more fun!

I’m now looking for a pool to start classes, but I would like to be able to do these as drop-in as, so far, in this area I have only seen classes in gyms where you have to pay a monthly membership. If anyone knows of any pools you think might be suitable, (ideally a gorgeous free private pool) please do tell me!

Lost Keys

One of the ladies in my Tuesday night 7:15pm class lost her car keys. If you came to this class please could you check your bag or jumper to see they didn’t get snagged up.

I finally found my lost sunglasses - after they had been through the wash in my jacket pocket! Oops! Luckily they are still okay and I have bought a spare pair - so hopefully these car keys will turn up somewhere too.

I’m on 07770 846 284 if you want to text me if you do find them!

Take a bad day and make it better

Some of you know that I had another near miss with a bus this Tuesday (I know, another one!) and after 4 years of cycling almost every day it was the closest I’ve had. I was shaking and crying and the police were super nice to me, but as I pulled myself back together I honestly didn’t feel angry at the bus driver as I often do when someone drives dangerously, because I knew there was no way the driver would have behaved that way if he/she could have seen the mess I was in afterwards.

I believe we all really want to help make each other feel better, not worse and when we stop, take a breath and think for a second we honestly don’t want to upset or injure anyone else.

But... when we’re in a rush, or stressed, frustrated at the supermarket line, or trying to deal with a customer call centre, or just get some help (whether it’s at the police station, school or in the bank) it’s too easy to treat the people around us as annoyances, obstacles or part of a system instead of human beings with the same feelings as us.

Some of us are great at dealing with waiters or checkout staff, but maybe get a bit bossy in emails, some of us may smile all day, but rev up our cars to beat the red light... and I think we can all forget that every single interaction we have with another human being, whether they are online, in person or on the phone is an opportunity to make that person’s day either a little bit better or a little bit worse. Just a smile and a genuine “Thank You” to someone serving you can make their day. Letting someone out at the traffic lights, or giving someone else the seat on the Tube, these are all free gifts that we can share with others and make the world a nicer, happier, friendlier and human place.

Congratulations!

Niamh completed 5 classes, fabulous!

You Can Do It

Sometimes I get asked a question that foxes me. It’s when someone in class (maybe you) asks me “How do you do that step... I just can’t get it?” And the reason I look at you blankly is that... you just did it.

Trust me, when you’re not quite getting things I will give you pointers, or slow things down or even break down the move at the end of the class or in the intro next time, but so often so many of you don’t realise quite how great you already are and how much you are already doing.

I know that sometimes when I am struggling with things (a DIY job this afternoon for example) I get frustrated and often say “I just can’t get it” (or even worse trying to squeeze my laundry into the wardrobe), but... when I take a deep breath, remember “one step at a time” and just crack on, well... hooray the laundry disappeared!

So next time you hear yourself saying “I can’t do it” or “I just can’t get it”, try switching it around to something more positive and more realistic; “I’m getting it”, “I can do it”. And then let yourself shine; with your smile, your attitude, relaxing a little bit, because as I’m always saying “You got it, you just got to know you got it.”

Meditation Classes

A friend of mine rang this week to ask all about meditation and it reminded me that I really haven’t done an awful lot to promote my meditation classes this year. If it’s something you’re interested in, here’s a link to the Ways To Meditate section of my website:

What happens when I cancel a class?

Thanks so much guys for the lovely messages when I was sick over the weekend - unfortunately there’s a lot of it about so please be careful and get your supplies in! And I’m so sorry to have had to cancel last Saturday’s class - I really only had it in me to text one potential cover instructor and she couldn’t make it.

If I ever do have to cancel a class at short notice (so far it’s 4 times in 4 years!) I’ll do my best to let you know by text, email, Facebook, Twitter, but if you do turn up to class and it is not running you will get your next class for free as an apology for the inconvenience.

Congratulations!

To all you guys who completed reward cards this week!

Kate completed 5 classes, fantastic!

Claudia completed 50 classes, fabulous!

Eve completed 70 classes, sensational!

Hi guys,

I am so sorry but have to cancel class this morning (Saturday) as I have been up all night with a nasty stomach bug - please take care out there as I think it is going around!

I also made a mistake on the timetable update for next week as our Thursday lunchtime class at Wimbledon 12 noon will be cancelled due to a double booking of the room.

Hope to see you all as normal on Monday and on the Thursday afterwards at the Guild.

Much love, Pearl x

Native American Healing

Some of you may also know that I have struggled, when visiting the US to find out more about native American healing in Florida - it is not easy people!

So when I started to research healing in Sedona, Arizona I was challenged by the vast amount of information, healers and resources on offer - so I closed my eyes and picked with my intuition and found almost instantly this YouTube channel. If you’re interested in this sort of thing check it out - some really powerful videos that take you on a journey of discovery through Arizona from your living room.

Complain To The Management

Find me on Facebook
Follow me on Twitter

Hi guys,

It struck me after I got back from holiday just how many businesses are constantly sending me emails... “please fill in this survey telling us how your experience was”.

For a car rental where I dropped off and picked up a new car in Orlando (there’s no point having a car during Convention) I got a total of 4 surveys sent to me - 2 from Virgin who I booked through and 2 from Alamo, and when I chased up the only thing that mattered that much to me - my air miles - I got a reply from a completely different company.

It drives me nuts, because when I’m there I am CONSTANTLY telling people what I think. Especially hotels. I tell the receptionist, concierge, barman, cleaning ladies, pool guy, waitress - I even went back at Costa D’Este to congratulate the chef for the best meal I ate in Florida (for the 2nd year running!!) this guy deserves an award (on top of the ones he’s already won!) (On a side note, it is totally worth making a special trip up here for the restaurant - great service, walk-in, whereas the people I sat next to on the plane said they couldn’t get into Gloria Estefan’s restaurant in Miami as it was so fully booked. Vero Beach, people, it’s worth it.)

Anyway, I tell them (you know what I’m like!) And then I get the surveys and the experience questions and the requests to post on Tripadvisor and Booking.com and I’m like... dudes I just got back from holiday! I have a business to run! And I will absolutely review you - in my own guidebooks (and probably on Tripadvisor too) but let me catch my breath!

But what is so annoying, is that we all know the answer. I knew it when I was working in quality management, when I got paid to go and interview teams on how to improve their services and they would say “Well, we need x and y and we’ve been telling this to our line management for ten years.” I’d write a pretty report and the CEO would say “Wow, brilliant.” I quit.

It’s like ‘Undercover Boss” - okay so we know we love it when they find out really dodgy things (like a Best Western hotel moving door numbers so they would pass the quality check!!) but in most episodes it’s incredibly obvious and staff are more than happy to tell anyone; “this is the problem.” It’s nothing new because they’ve usually been complaining about the same problem for years - but no one listened.

The one hotel I don’t think I’ve had a survey from is, in my opinion the best hotel chain in the world, Mandarin Oriental. It is very, very, very hard to find one negative thing to say about this hotel but I had two comments. The first was in the spa where I had booked an add-on treatment (and extra 20 minutes for $25 or something like that) which I wanted before my massage, there was a little confusion about that and after my massage I said “Look, I’d rather not have it now.” Their response, “Oh but we’re going to give it to you for free as an apology for the confusion.” It still didn’t quite work but I did get to see the massage suite (pretty!) and was quite happy because it was a freebie. The second... I had my dinner on the first night at the bar because it was a busy Friday night, bar and restaurant staff were so attentive and even apologised that they couldn’t spend more time chatting to me. When I mentioned that the mini-bar was spectacular but maybe they could suggest to the management to put sparking water in it too (it had 3 or 4 water choices)... the next day I opened my mini-bar fridge to find the water I had ordered at the bar the night before. Wow! That’s special treatment.

But what it really is, is staff empowerment. Staff who have the authority to quickly make that treatment free due to inconvenience, staff who can make a change to the stock in my mini-bar. Did I drink the water, absolutely! If they had put an expensive drink I had ordered the night before at the bar in my mini-bar I would probably have gone for that too, because that kind of personal service is a true luxury. It sells way more than “personalising” direct market campaigns that address me as Mr Pearl, because it's real personal service - listening to what’s important to me!

Sometimes we need surveys, Zumba Convention has a mammoth one, which is needed because it’s a mammoth event, and yes sometimes if you have a complaint you might not want to feed it back directly, but generally it saves so much time, trouble and money if we’re just... human. I know, being English this is sometimes difficult, and sometimes it’s hard to hear criticism but Please! Stop asking me to tell the management. Managers... before you send out a survey or start calling customers for feedback... look at what you already know, look at what your staff are telling you - they are an incredible resource.

90% of the time I am the boss and I always want to hear your comments, and then there are those few times when I am the monkey and not the organ grinder and I say “please tell those in charge, because I will tell them but unfortunately it doesn’t mean as much coming from me.”

But it should.

Much love, Pearl x

Zumba with Bursts®

So what exactly is Zumba with Bursts? It is designing choreography so that you guys are working at your absolute maximum for 1 to 3 sections of the song - in fact, we’re already doing that for some of our songs.

The big news is that using choreography like this (called high intensity interval training in the fitness world) I can put together a class that’s only 30 minutes long but which will give you a great workout - and that’s perfect for those who want to fit a workout into their lunch hours.

If you’d like a 30 minute lunchtime class in your workplace I am now offering this for a rate of £60 per session for 6 weeks, which, if you have 5 people who want to join in makes this £12 each. If you would like a class but don’t have space at work contact me to find out if I can book a local space.

Can we do it for Zumba Gold? Absolutely, although we have to do a longer warm up and cool down, so I’d still recommend a 45 minute class.

If you have any questions about Zumba with Bursts just ask!

Zumba Gold Congratulations!

One of the great things about Convention is getting to meet superstars like Joy Prouty and Josie Gardiner who designed and continue to spearhead the Zumba Gold program.

When I met them I told them briefly about the work we are doing in Merton; Zumba Gold and Zumba Gold chair classes and about the Zumbathon we held in March. Joy’s reply - “Why didn’t you email me the photos?”

Dumbfounded it took me a couple of weeks to get around to it, and she replied the same day to congratulate us and to thank us for being part of the program.

So I just want to give you all a big pat on the back because, whether you are in a Zumba Gold, Zumba Gold chair or whether you’re coming to one of my regular Zumba Fitness classes, you are supporting this work directly or indirectly.

I am passionate about Zumba Gold because I want everyone to be able to enjoy this stuff, but also because when I look at the research I am staggered to see that this program is having more success with general ageing problems, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, other types of dementia, stroke support, ALS or MND, MS, cancer, depression and pretty much any condition you could mention than many other forms of treatment. To be doing something that people enjoy that has long lasting benefits for their health is mind blowing and it is thanks to everyone who comes to class (or I would have given up years ago!)

You are awesome - congratulations to you on all of your good work!

Okay, one of the great things about Convention is trying new things and learning from your fellow instructors - but this was still a bad idea.

As I saw Desthy’s head hit the floor I remembered my whiplash and so, I must confess, played this for laughs and didn’t actually put weight on my head!

Do The Work, Do The Work, Do The Work

Find me on Facebook
Follow me on Twitter

Hello you,

So a couple of things came up today and I was reminded of the very simplest of life lessons - “do the work, do the work, do the work”.

I was talking to someone about lower back pain and remembering rehabbing my body after my kidney donation surgery and also a few years after that when my lower back sort of collapsed and I was surviving for about six weeks, shifting between lying in bed, sitting and standing only as each position became too painful to handle. How I managed without working I don’t remember, but there was no choice because I couldn’t even walk to the Tube and for a long time couldn’t get on a Tube, bus or even in a car because the movement was so painful (even with maximum drugs).

As I explained a few exercises that helped me I remembered what it was; exercises three times a day, seeing my physio (super expensive as I wasn’t working and had no health cover) but it was all I could think of to do, and I could walk to her. When I went back to work and got BUPA it was fantastic to have more sessions with her.

But today I also felt a bubble of some other existential pain come up, some remnant of the many troubling things I have worked through, and I sat down with a good, helpful book and tried to figure what it was, how I could release it, how I could forgive. And it reminded me of much worse times, when I opened up to really feeling all the pain I had experienced and allowed that to leave me, working through things, and again, lying on my bed, holding onto the bed as Dean Martin said (he famously said “if you can lie on the floor without holding on, you’re not drunk enough”). Feeling that the emotion and old pain coming up was just going to have me fly off the bed.

I am so thankful for the physios and the therapists and the books and the people who have come into my life and who have helped me heal my life, but I also honour my own contribution, because none of it, even having a massage, is passive. In this moment I honour myself, I honour my own spirit, my willingness to push through pain in order to live a life free of pain, I am proud of my own dedication and hard work, I am proud of letting go of the good for the better, I am proud of me.

Digging deep today I find a pool of pain of that wishing, hoping that others would see me and be proud of me, of wishing to be seen and ultimately loved. It is always painful in life to have loved or even just wanted love from others that was withheld or just denied. Sometimes the healing comes when we realise that love and pride for us was there all along, just hidden, sometimes the healing comes from new sources of love and respect, but I believe that neither of these can really heal unless we love, respect and yes, are proud of ourselves.

So I want to say, not in an arrogant, or egotistical way, but in a way that today I remember how painful and hard some of the steps were, that I am proud of the journey I have taken and that pride in myself helps me to forgive those who could not see me or be proud of me. I love myself enough for all the people who were not strong enough to love me.

(Deep, huh?) Maybe I’ve been reading too much John Green - those teen novels will do it.

So often we are looking in life for a quick fix or a trick that will save us the work, but the truth is that if you want to do a marathon you have to go 26 and a bit miles.

Do the work, do the work, do the work.

Much love, Pearl x

Back From Hols!

I have to be honest, I had the Best. Holiday. Ever. and very soon you will see some ge...orgeous photos that may make you a bit sick (not least of the new man in my life!) Yes, although I often feel terminally single, I literally walked along a beach in moonlight and met him (not romantic at all!)

So, I feel for anyone who either missed out on a holiday altogether, is down because their holiday didn’t work out as planned, or if like me, you had an awesome time but are finding it hard to adjust to regular life (and suddenly being in a long distance relationship and not just with Zumba Head Office!)

Convention was awesome, I always learn so much and I feel like I change as a person in the few days I am there, learning not just about Zumba but about myself and this year “business”. Sometimes I am in denial that Zumba is my business as it’s just too much fun, but this year made me think about that - I did my first professional photo shoot (like pulling teeth - it is not fun having someone yell “be natural” at you when you’re trying to hit a spot and suck everything in), but I think I got a few photos for new leaflets n stuff.

Most of all, as always, going to any event I come back impressed with just how great you guys are. Your moves are really up there with a room of Instructors (seriously, I am not just saying that) and your behaviour is way, way better. I am reminded that top of my priorities is to provide you with a safe space to express yourselves and let yourselves go - and please do feed back to me if you ever feel that you are not getting this from me - especially when things get a bit busy, as in masterclasses.

I met some fabulous instructors and I have invited as many as I can to come visit us in London and give masterclasses here and I hope to announce some exciting guests soon, but if I can’t get them here, I try to soak up their genius and bring it on back to you (give me a few weeks!!)

I’ll be writing up my adventures for my Spa Breaks books, but in short here are a few of the Best from my trip.

Best Housekeeping Service
Mandarin Oriental Miami - they tidy my stuff without moving it, even my messy bathroom toiletries. Please, please can I get this at home - it would save me HOURS every week!!

Best Jacuzzi/Spa Bath
Mandarin Oriental Miami - heaven!

Best People Watching
Three way tie between South Beach (no, not everyone in Miami has a perfect body!), Zumba Convention (no, not every Zumba Instructor has a perfect body!) and Key West (no, not everyone wears clothes!)

Best Bar Staff
Mandarin Oriental Miami - if you have to eat at the bar in any hotel these guys are the best companions (and then they put my favourite sparkling water in my mini-bar!)

Best Barefoot Destination
Clearwater

Best Cocktail
Tranquility Bay Beach Resort - Key Lime - like drinking a Key Lime cheesecake through a straw - with rum.

Best Shopping
Zumba Convention!!!!

Best Waterslide
Hilton Orlando - I made all the other instructors do it!!!

Best Food
Costa D’Este - Vero Beach

Best Massage
Key Largo - Gulf Stream Water Dance (so cool, so fun!)

Best Snorkelling
Bahia Honda beach near Marathon - Florida Keys - no boat required just snorkel right off the beach!

Most Annoying Thing
Staying under budget but then not factoring in the stupid Florida extras... sales tax on the room, resort fees, occupancy fees (seriously, an extra 12.5% for actually staying in the room you booked!) and then more sales tax on that. Next time I’m staying at the Native American hotel - no sales tax and probably no occupancy fees either - varies even with counties in Florida!

Stupidest Thing I Did

Wimbledon Park Hall – New Studio

Yes, I have found a lovely new studio in Wimbledon Park; Wimbledon Park Hall, where I will be starting 4 new classes from 1st September.

As well as air conditioning the studio has quite the most beautiful toilets, oh and the dance floor isn't bad either.  And parking is free outside from 3pm.

Wimbledon Park also has many lovely shops, cafes and restaurants and is on the District Line, so is only a few minutes from Wimbledon mainline station.

And there is a free water bottle or bag for the first 40 customers - or you can just recommend a friend for free goodies!

New classes will be

Monday
Zumba Gold 12 – 12:45pm £6
Zumba 8:15 – 9:15pm £7

Thursday
Zumba 7:15 – 8:15pm
Zumba Gold 8:30 – 9:15pm

Hope to see you there!!
