A Rest Is As Good As A Rest

I often think that the old adage “A change is as good as a rest” was designed for workaholics (mea culpa) but taking 4 whole days!!! off this Easter weekend I realised how badly I needed the rest. This is always true when I stop... and when I go for a massage... or a walk in the park... I never take time out and say “Oh I didn’t really need that nap!” But still, I am one of many people who have been working flat out since New Year as if it was normal and productive to work 3 months without any holiday. (And fill my days off with more trainings and work!)

As always I realise that my classes are so quiet around the Easter weekend I could have even taken a few more days off, but I constantly fill myself with the worry of slacking off and losing momentum, so I take the bare minimum.

Anyway as you’ve probably guessed my “Easter Resolution” is to remember that if I want to be refreshed and renewed I have to take the time off to let myself unwind, relax and see the funny side of life. My favourite moment of this weekend was in a luxurious spa when I was feeling a little annoyed at all the people chatting away in the quiet spaces, then, as I was chilling in the outdoor pool a duck landed right next to me. Our luxury spa experience ended with us splashing around the pool trying to chase the duck out!! You couldn’t make it up!

I also realise that so much of the time I am pushing for things to happen - like trying to get my Aqua classes off the ground - only 7 months later to find out that there are issues with the training I did for Level 2 Aqua so I may not actually be certified! In fact it may have caused serious problems for me if I had been teaching with the temporary certificate! Another case where having tolerance and patience can be way more important than always rushing, pushing and stressing. (Ah the wisdom of a Bank Holiday Weekend!) I must remember to trust the universe more!

Zumba Education Specialist Annual Meeting

As a lot of you know last Thursday I was stressing out about booking my convention pass the very second registration opened, as a lot of sessions get booked up and you never know until you register what is going to be popular, and there’s always the worry that the whole thing will sell out! I also had to go up to the hospital for an annual check up, so ended up booking it with my credit card sitting in the waiting room with everyone staring at me (what a desperate shopper!) (I got all my top picks and apparently 4,000 instructors registered on the first day! There r around 7-8,000 spaces in total for Convention!)

Convention is the most incredible time for me for so many reasons. It’s so much more than just training. It’s where I go to be inspired by the very best in the world, where I go to figure out the kinks in my “game” and it’s where I go to put down my Instructor hat and pick up the Participant hat so that I understand how it feels when you’re at the back of the class getting squashed and I keep saying move forward and you’re like “how am I supposed to move forward when they won’t!” Yes, I need to be reminded!! It’s the inspiration and passion that helps me through the difficult times and the burning out times and push through the doubt when I don’t know what the next step is.

I know that two years ago when I got to go for the very first time I was dragging, and I came back, invigorated, inspired and although I’d love to say everything was wonderful, the truth is that the year after that was in some ways my hardest year so far. So I honestly don’t know if I would have made it through without having Convention 2013 “in my tank”.

Anyway this video from Zumba co-creator Beto Perez shows the ZES meeting (these are our teachers) and as much as I am jealous they only get 3 days together - we do get 4-5 days for Convention! This is the team that works so hard to create our experience at Convention.

If I wasn’t super excited already, seeing the ZES who I learned so much from in previous years makes me remember how far I’ve come and seeing those who I’ve signed up to learn from (check out South African ZES Lucas at 8:34 with my previous African teacher Ricardo who came up with your favourite Bouje choreo!) means I just cannot wait!!

Just Merton Column and Advert

It was so exciting to come back on Tuesday and see my very first column in the new local Just Merton magazine! There is also an advert with a Free First Class for Vestry Hall classes - so make sure you tell any friends who have been meaning to come and give it a go!

The team at Just Merton did a fantastic job as it looks even better than the first edition so I really hope this magazine gets more and more successful!!
