My thanks to Jill for such an awesome blog post, what a treat to have her back on Living a Life of Writing.
Being an Author Means Being on
Duty 24-7
Being an author is a twenty-four
hour a day job, and I say this from two points of view: the sales &
promo side, and the creative side.
On the creative side, everything you
see and hear has to potential to become a snippet of

Casually Vacant Writing
We have spoken a lot on this blog about
considering your audiences when you’re a writer and how important this is to
being successful. How easy is it to get caught up in what we’re doing and
forget that we are not just writing for ourselves but for our readers?
Sometimes we can find ourselves getting caught up in an exciting new idea and
we go ahead with it without really

Aw, Heck! I'm Not Doing This Again! Numbers and Mistakes We Make
Google tells people where they need to go to find out information. Most people are educated enough that they know that should they type in a topic, they will most likely find what they are seeking. The internet is both a blessing and a curse to many. It can create mass education, and mass disinformation. It is harder to be a writer when you need to be an Internet savvy marketer, and a book

Oops... I Did it Again...
Mistakes we make as writers... then make
again...
Have
you ever noticed that your creative spurts and inspirational deficits come in
cyclic fashion? We get on a roll with writing and then for some reason or other
(usually life), we stop being able to write. That flow that was coming so
easily now just feels like an uphill battle. You know what I say? Ride the
wave.

Hey You! Wanna Buy My Book?! You! YOU! BUY MY BOOK! Stop! Don't Run Away!
We are guilty of this. It's a huge mistake to make, and one that is very simple. Once we've published a book, we want to spend the next day, month or week just talking about it to every person imaginable. It sounds like people are interested, and it seems that there will be success, and most of the time, there is that initial purchase of a few books.
Great idea right? So, we try a bit

Have a Moment? Nope? Can't Fix It if You Don't
I make a mistake. I made a mistake. I missed a mistake. Sounds horrible doesn't it? No one likes to admit that they make some sort of mistake, and, if it is pointed out to them, well, it is not their fault. It's something else.

Get Up Offa That Thang!
It is inevitable that some people
just completely disagree that you should spread your attention and effort
between a hobby and an sustainable income. “I don’t want to do anything other
than write!” “I’m not good at anything other than writing!” “If I don’t focus
on my writing how can I ever expect to make a career in writing?” “I feel like

The Trinity of the Aspiring Writer
Three quick ways to avoid not letting your
job outshine your passion
Sometimes
we worry that by taking on a job outside of writing, we will lose the
motivation or time to work on what we are passionate about. I’m not going to
lie, this is often the case, but it doesn’t have to be such a black and white
scenario. Obviously energy has to be put into the things we are making

Inspire Yourself and Do Better
I could say that anything you do you can always do better, but that would be a bit cliche. Anyone can do anything that they try and put their minds to, but at some point, all to often, there is something that "gives." You know that moment. Take a blog for example.
You start out writing some good blog posts, and you feel inspired. You want to write another post. Then it happens. You start

When Opposites Attract...and Inspire
This
month we are examining the duality that often accompanies the life of an
artist. Last week we spoke about the struggle we sometimes encounter when we
are deciding whether it is “right” to take on another job while still writing,
in order to make money. This means that as an artist we may have a minimum (and
I emphasize MINIMUM) of two jobs: one that we just enjoy (often
